Some people have asked which temperature monitoring app I'm using, it's called TG Pro and can be downloaded here: crtd.tech/tgpro
How do you get this powermetrics dashboard? Is it also available on Intel macs?
Can I still avail the m1 give away?✌🏻
For students like me who do not need that 4k video editing function, I think the M1 is probably the best and most obvious choice. The M2 is pretty much similar to the M1 but requiring a substantially larger amount of money that could be spent on accessories for the macbook, such as hubs and what nots
True, I bought m2 and now feel like m1 would have been better value.
@@Airinas96 really ! i am gonna buy M2
Agree 666%
@@Airinas96 hey there bro, I was wondering how is your macbook holding up?
@@Airinas96 Im planning on buying a base model as it's on discount at currys. I know I'll also just use the macbook for when im at college using stuff like google docs and researching. I know I won't intensively work the macbook everyday, therefore I'm considering buying base model. Even though it has slower read/write speeds compared to the M1 😭
I think I'll forever like the M1 MacBook Air's form factor. I really wish Apple kept that design to distinguish the MacBook Air's from the MacBook Pro's. Are we talking ports? Thank you Apple for bringing back MagSafe charging! I think I speak for all when I say, "MagSafe has truly been missed". As far as performance is concerned, I think it'll really come down to the user. It really depends on whether you're a lite user like me performing marketing and finance related projects, or a heavy task user, who's into graphic designing and video editing tasks.
Even with graphic design you're not rendering 24/7. You're also accelerated for video. So I wouldn't fear thermals unless you plan on compiling linux 24/7
M1 is a champ with time proven performance ability. For the price you can't go wrong 👍
One more thing I recognised is the M1 has better speakers compared with the M2. Not because of the quality, but the position of the two speakers.
@@linuxuser2928 you have a point there! We're not performing heavy intensive tasks 24/7.
@@daveadams6421 yes, the price Apple offered for the baseline M1 MacBook Air was fair, and even when you bump up the specifications a little to.
This channel gets better and better - this is some high quality comparison video!
The selling point of the M2 MBA would probably be the refreshed design and the lighter weight, those are the only two categories where it would make sense to buy it in my opinion. The base M1 MBA actually hit the price of $800 (In MicroCenter) a while ago, and there is no way the M2 MBA is worth 30-50% more than M1 MBA for most people. People who would want the extra power for the M2 would likely also want upgrades in RAM and SSD and that would put it in the 14 inch MBP's price range.
I agree that for the majority those would be the only two selling points. But in my case, I will upgrading from a 2012 (Intel) MBA. For me MagSafe is a big selling point. I am a university teacher and I carry my MBA around to do presentations in my classes. I have tripped over the power cable a thousand times and MagSafe has saved the day every time. I also do a lot online classess, so a better webcam, and better mics are important. I am aware that paying the extra 200$ for those features, might not be justified, but I think in the long term (I am planning on using the M2 MBA for the next 6 to 10 years) they will matter to me. I am sure that I would be happy with an M1 MBA, but an M2 MBA would make me even happier.
@@jorditordera Those are very valid points! If you can afford it and you have a use for it, it's perfectly justifiable for an extra $200. I own the MBA M1, and I typically bring an extra 25000mah power bank when I travel. The power bank gives me a few hours of extra battery life depending on the brightness and the task.
I'm sorry but the 14 inch MBP is still $500 above the 512/16 GB M2 MacBook Air... I don't know why people keep saying that. (At least where I live).
@@juanpabloaguilar481 It says it's $1749 on Amazon USA right now.
@@vlee9275 I’m looking at the same one and that’s refurbished, a new mbp 14” WITH an education discount is over 1800 without taxes
I appreciate that unlike most UA-camrs you're looking at more workloads than just video editing.
I'm glad that I decided to pick the M1 MBA a month before the M2 MBA was announced. I knew the price is gonna be more expensive and I knew Apple would choose either the bad design M1 iMac or this one.
Yeah couldn't be happier with mine as well tbh. Got it back almost a year ago and it's a brilliant laptop. The m2 imo just isn't worth the added price tag. Really thought apple would just bump the m1 down and bring the m2 to the m1 air base level price. Glad I didn't wait for m2 and got this laptop when I did lmao.
I got the M1 Air too.. only thing I wanted from the M2 was that MagSafe charging. I prefer the M1. That wedge shape comes it super handy when packing.
Excellent video, as always! Thank you.
Great comparation video. Thanks 👍👍👍And good luck to your 200k subs!
Went for the Base M1 as it does all i need from it. Considered the M2 but as I just needed a small laptop to take with me on shoots and for business trips the M1 Air was alright. I do even edit my vids on it and it keeps up with 10BIT 4.2.2 4K Footage, which for sure is interesting. The M2 is a nice and more modern looking device but for me it was just not worth it.
Informative comparison! What I was looking for.
Thank you so much for this review!!!
The M1 Air will go in the history books as the computer that changed the game...made Intel jump out of their bean bags onto hot coal....made Dell, ASUS, HP etc up their game in terms of entry level ultrabooks...I love mine to the core and the fact that this fanless chassis stays cool and runs almost forever due to the stupendous battery life while outperforming an 11th gen i7 is a testament to apple's engineering, with the M2s they got carried away...the M1 was is and always will be special.....the M1 Air is a near perfect machine...
also by the time M2 arrived, intel has already upped thier game to a point where M2 is no longer a market dominance the way M1 was in 2020....
oh how the times are changing so rapidly.....
Can you name one intel laptop within the same price range that can compete with the base m1 air in terms of processing speed, battery life, weight and display ?
@@hazemkh xps 13 plus
@@insenjojo1839 to match the base specs you’ll have to pay at least 30%+ it’s not a bad laptop but they’re still way behind the m technology
@@hazemkh i was comparing the m2 air/m2 pro with the base xps 13+, the base i5 actually outperforms the M2...and they are priced pretty similar...
@@insenjojo1839 the base xps has a 1080 outdated screen. 3 hours less battery life with 2 fans that can’t keep it as cool as the fan less air. A better xps 13 will cost more than the outstanding 14” m1 pro base that outperforms i9’s
Thank you for the helpful review! :)
thank you for the informative video!
Great video, congrats in 200k when you reach it. Been loving my MBA M1. But have issue with microphone, thats the only reason I would upgrade to MBA M2

Thanks for the kind words, glad to hear you enjoy the videos :)
great video mate 😃
Thanks for making it clear!
I bought an M2 Air, but will return it for the M1 if I'm not blown away by the new version. I found a way to improvise Mag Safe on my iPad Pro and will use it on the M1 Air if I choose to buy one. Amazon has magnetic adapters for USB Cables. One plugs onto the USB C cable connector, the other goes into a USB C port on the iPad Pro or Air They connect via magnets on each adapter. Works well for data transfer, too. Great video, mate!
Does the one connecting to the port on the device protrude a lot? If so, that might damage the port during transportation. I was thinking of the same but decided not to for the reason stated.
Definitely going for m1 here. Thanks for the comparison, it helped me a lot 👌
I saw an M2 MacBook Air at my local tech store thing. It felt pretty nice in my hand.
Did it feel nice on your head too?
Thanks for this comparison.
The M1 is the one that I would go for. Great video.
The M1 MacBooks were a big hit. The M2 MacBooks have received a lot of criticism, especially the base models.
Apple has been very quiet about this and it makes me suspect that they intentionally crippled the M2 MacBooks to try to correct the mistake they made with the M1. The mistake was making them too good to consider the higher models as in the Intel days.
Good point. I think they also adjusted for profit with this machine.
I think they are playing the Value Proposition game too by crippling features. It’s so they can sell the M2 MBP models for more using the same hardware.
Nice video bro!
Thanks for the video :)
What’s the visibility comparison when outdoors? The quick shot in the video couldn’t see anything on the screen, was it actually on?
Great video!
Subscribed! I'm looking to buy a new MacBook and was torn between the M1 and M2 MBA. Thank you for clearing all my doubts ❤️
Great comparison!
this was really an ultimate comparison, for which I was looking for.
Hi there! I have a question for you or for anyone who might be able to help here.
When I open a new window and at least one of them is in full screen mode, I can't find a way to toggle between each window. For example, if I have two files open in Preview, I can easily toggle between each file by pressing CMD + `. Same thing if I have two windows of Brave open - it works fine if the window I'm toggling to is not in full screen mode.
Do you know if there's a way to toggle between files/windows using the keyboard when the windows are in full screen mode?
Thanks a lot in advance for your comments!
Been following since a bit before your channel exploded in 2020/21 and thanks for the opportunity of winning a Mac, my Acer is dying and I’m crossing my fingers 🤞🏻
That said as usual your video is probably the best comparison there’s on UA-cam! Sure the M2 is overall better, speed aside, but the price gap is too hard to ignore.
For light 3D work will the M2 thermal throttle at some point making the viewport sluggish? So for hobbyist Blender user will a fan still be needed?
Thanks! Great video
hey can you stream on twitch and play on low settings at the same time? and I'm wondering if you play long time let's say 1-2 hours FPS starts dropping? thermal throttling i mean
such good video 🔥
I got MBA M1 16GB/512GB in Dec 2020. At that time many people were saying (rightly so) that it's the worst Apple Silicone laptop (new would be better). I haven't't regreted the purchase at all and would buy it again now even though M2 is available.
If M2 had support for 2 external displays it could change my attitude a bit.
For what I use it for: Java development, editing family photos in Lightroom, editing family videos in DaVinci Resolve I couldn't have made a better choice.
Looking forward to 3nm process. Maybe then I'll have urge for upgrade. For the time being I'm more than happy with M1 MBA.
Mba m1 16gb or mba m2 8gb? Which one is better for android, ios, angular and java dev?
@@gxs8p578 I have MBA M1 with 16GB and 512 GB SSD and do Java professionally. You can say whatever you want about M1 but not that it's slow. I would take 16GB any day over 20% more CPU power that M2 offers. The only thing that would convince me to upgrade in the future is 3nm process and considerably improved efficiency (battery running time).
@@PawelP76 great, thanks! one thing holding me back is that the mba m1 is already 2 years old, while the mba m2 has slow ssd. will also use it for java dev.
Damn, that’s an ideal setup. I dumbly walked into Best Buy needing one that day.. learned the only sold the base. Even the 13” pro was base only. I was worried but it’s been great. I’d have gladly paid the extra $400 to have double storage and ssd like you have.
You must love that thing, I love mine and it’s the most basic laptop apple makes lol. It’s high end to me
Excellent video as always.
I think trying to get into the apple ecosystem an m1 is ideal for me for starters
Gorgeous!
Kudos!
happy to see your videos
Have you tried to apply liquid metal instead the thermal paste in the m1 and m2 laptops?
Can i go with apple macbook air m1 256gb or either build a pc for 80k? Which will be good for editing and slight gaming
Great video. A very helpful comparison. I purchased the MacBook Air M2.
I love the M1 Air for its form factor. The wedge shape makes typing on it so much easier on the wrists. Plus, it's dang fast and has terrific battery life. I will confess, I ordered an M2 Air just to see what it's all about. So we'll see if I eat my M1 words once it gets here.
I have Both. you will be happy with the M2 Air. It's an upgrade.
Makes packing it way easier too, people don’t see that til they have to do that though which is to late. Can pack it in anything. The M2 air is a lot harder to do that.
The M1 air with 16gb ram and 512 gb ssd costs me around 1500 Euros, the M2 Air with the same config costs almost 2000 Euros just the same as the 14 M1 pro. I have started video editing as a hobby and currently use my desktop pc (R5 5600x, 3080, 32gb ram) for that but I want something as well for the go since I am often on the go. Which model would you recommend me? I want to keep the device at least for 5 yrs.
I have the same thought! What did u do?
@@christinasvevo4280 went for the M1 air. Since I travel quite often this choice suits me well. I wish the display was a bit larger though
M1 for the win, it's basically the same performance for hundreds less.
With *these* old eyes the 14 or 16 inch models are the clear winners. As for price and performance, you’re looking at $1,599 for the properly configured M2 Air vs. $1,999 for the 14” Pro.
absolutely , the M1 with 512 SSD is the perfect all around lap top for diverse every day activities, I love mine. VERY few people would actually see any difference compared to the M2, the fact that the SSD on the M2 slows down sooner is a big plus for the M1 as well. M1 MBA = KING
I disagree
@@volkssturm9694 M2 only has bigger screen, more brightness, new design, better camera, better speakers, magsafe in the same color, better performance overall, lighter body, new amazing colors. So yes, M1 wins lol
M2 base model is better than M1 any given day.
I can’t wait to get the new M2 Air! But I guess by time I save enough for it with the ssd and ram upgrades they’ll be releasing the M3! How wonderful!
Then you can get the M1 and floored discount by then.
Thanks for the review. M1 Air seems to be the way to go instead of the base model M2
I got the base m1 air as my first apple laptop and I was weary.. the m1 interested me though and my 12 year old Dell had died.
Two years later, this is probably my most prized possession. Not cause cost, but because I use it probably 8 hours a day. It’s an amazing machine. It feels first-class. My Dell felt like economy lol.
if i were to get the M1 how many years would it last me before i’d have to upgrade? (average student use and music production)
My MBP M1 is a great buy, I do need the active cooling for future proof, but I've never heard the fans, wondering if those are there haha
base model to base model, the M2 has an SSD that is half the speed and it will throttle more under load. If you aren't going to push the machine, save the money and buy the M1 Air
good advice
please make a comparison between m1 16gb vs m2 8gb .i have been looking for buying one of these cant decide and i would love of you would increse the time of your opinion on product conparison rather than benchmarks ,it will give a nicer touch., thanks for video.
I‘ve been subscribed for a long time, I decided to purchase the M1 air last year after watching series of your videos of comparison and its ability. I've always want to say thank you to you for your video, but I was't able to comment in youtube until recently I found out why. It was due to my VPN's problem, BTW I come from somewhere I need to use VPN to watch youtube LOL.
Thanks for the support! Glad you are enjoying the videos :)
I've been burned multiple times by first gen of apple products and I'm no longer willing to pay them to beta test their hardware. The fact that this CPU is meant to run hotter by design and this laptop has a worst heat sink than the M1 air doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
I’ll be the space monkey
Happy that I picked up an M1 MBA instead of M2. Best value for the money and it's very sufficient for Software Development.
Well, M2 MBA is sitting between the M1 MBA and MBP M1 Pro 14". Which I think right now either get the M1 MBA or MBP M1 Pro 14", you won't regret a single thing.
hey I am a programming beginner and I have a request, instead of using the compile test for coding you should use the Mandelbrot set test by benchmark games, as it shows real performance of the machine.
python for multicore.
its easy to do and it is much more relevant.
if have any issues in running those tests you can ask me as I have had some and you can refer to Alex Ziskind's videos for it.
this would be of great help to people watching your channel
I bought the M1 MacBook Air M1 in late 2021 thinking it would be a placeholder. Got the base on sale at Best Buy brand new.
Two years later and I love this thing. Space may become an issue down the line with OS updates but I doubt it. I use it to stream and check and send emails.. apple music and tv. Basic stuff that doesn’t require storage.
Pros: the screen is amazing. Same with the speakers. Build quality and being able to open the top one handed. Battery is black-magic.. lasts forever. Keyboard is great, trackpad even better.
Cons: I’m not sure.. none for me. I do wish it came in black and I do kinda like MagSafe and the nicer cables but.. not for an extra $200 like the M2 Air so yeah, no complaints I suppose.
If I lost it today and had to buy a new laptop.. I’d still buy a M1 Air, I’d just buy 16gb ram. Worth mentioning though, the 8gb I have now has never been an issue. Every bit as quick as a oc I had w 32gb of fast ddr4
I liked your video. Love to get a bonus M2 or anything for that matter. Thanks
Have you had issues with lots of scuff marks or scratches on the ports from the USB C cables on the aluminum coating?
Not personally, but I've only been using it for 2 weeks. I think there will definitely be some noticeable ones in the future.
Please make a video how after effects performance in this new MacBook Air m2.. 🙏🙏🙏

I'd rather have a cooler machine with faster ssd, so I would choose the M1 MacBook Air for programming
To me the form factor of the MacBook Air M1 is better . It has this sleek look.
grt production quality buddy
This is really helpful!! Now I just have to decide how much I’m willing to spend
Still on the fence whether the faster SSD in the M1 outweighs the processor/display/camera/speakers of the M2 air
So if i get the m1 through amazon the price is 899$ where as the BnH link says 870$. Why is it cheaper through BnH? Is there a catch im missing?
I wish apple put a quest 2 sized fan in this. I wonder how much it'd help. I really wanna make a custom chassis with a fan for this laptop lol....
The M2 base model should definitely be the one with 512Gb storage
Apple does it since forever. They always make the base models lacking in at least one area, so they can force users to "upgrade" and pay more.
@@rafadydkiemmacha7543marquess brownlee supremacy
No offense but if there’s one thing to upgrade it’s the RAM to 16GB not SSD

Any laptop. When you have money, upgrade.
I do web development (frontend).
I'm currently using a core i7 1165G7 16GB RAM DDR4 3200 Linux.
I want to know if a base MacBook Air M1 (8GB RAM) is better or, at least, equivalent in firepower. In some benchmarks, considering the multicore score, seems to show TWICE the score (the Mac is higher).

i got a brand new m1 air couple days ago for $350 from a local retail store, man i can't be more happy than this
Thank you for show us about Blender 3.1.0 and up on M1 and M2
I think I'm leaning towards the M1 since I'll just be using it for light use

I don't get it i want to get a laptop for college so should I get the new m2 or not cause I'll be using it for about 3 to 4 years
If you think 16G/512G M2 is too expensive, buy M1. If the price is OK, choose the M2.
Usually I use macbook for 5 years , so the M2/16G/512G/8C8G is my choice. Yes, it's not cheap, but if you divide the price difference by 5 years it's still a good deal.
I think you just ended my 3 week struggle with the ‘price divided by years of use’ equation. And just so you know, that’s the exact M2 config I’m looking at as well so you got that right too… Kudos 🙌
M2 all the way loving my Air base model ! Dont notice ssd speeds at all .
Had the choice between both and when next to each other M2 looks amazing
yeah frr like the obvious choice for me as I'm on a budget is to go for M1 but the design man. The thick bezel of M1 Air's just bogged me, out of everything like that black bar looks useless. M2 on the other hand looks modern and having that extra space on top is like a dedicated space for the mac options. Also knowing Apple, only refreshes their notebook design for like every 7 years. Hopping in to the first gen redesign is a smart choice like your laptop wouldn't look so outdated in the future.
This is really a good and comprehensive reviews. BUT it would be really appreciated If u could also make a comparison video between M1 16Gb/256GB model and M2 16GB/256GB .
M1 would still be better. The crippled SSD on the base M2 is no joke
@@MF_OXF what do you really use the mba for? I doubt anyone who take video editing seriously runs it on 256gb ssd
@@RunForPeace-hk1cu Yeah any serious video editor or enthusiast wouldn't stick with only 256GB SSD. They'd have 512 at the very least but usually 1TB.
I would love to see this comparison, with an external ssd it would be an awesome value
How many more years of Mac OS updates will the 2020 M1 MacBook Air receive?
This will be my first time getting a MacBook and I’m very undecided on a m1 or m2 (upgraded specs 512gb and 16gb ram) the m2 being about $250 more idk why people keep saying upgraded m2 is the same range as a m1 14” pro when after tax it’s over 1800, about $300 more than an upgraded m2. Not sure about you but that’s not exactly pocket change. Btw any suggestions between the m1/m2 are appreciated
M1 is a champ with time proven performance ability. For the price you can't go wrong 👍
The problem for me with the M1 Air is price and spec, as a minimum I'd get 512/16 and when you spec it like that suddenly you're not far off the base 14 Pro and personally if it was my money thats the one I'd get. I know costs have gone up but Apple should have dropped the M1 Air price and bought in the M2 at $999US for the base.
$500 USD is far off for me...
I want to ask if M1 MacBook Air is still using 2 ssd chips or it changes to 1 ssd chip like the new M2 MacBook Air?

I clicked the link for the macbook air m2 in the description and it says its only $1049 right now??? How???
apple really rushed this product out and even though i feel like i would love the midnight color, i should just purchase an M1 to upgrade the SSD and RAM because those add up quick $$$. i wonder if apple will take their time with M3 or sell it to consumers next year hoping we will "buy" their market slogan "improved and better performance" but with a lot of flaws
I think since M3 is going to be on a new 3nm node from TSMC it will be more efficient than M2.
The M2 Air is still faster than the M1 Air but it's too pricey.
My M1 MBP purchase is really justified, since I could only afford the base 256GB.
really nice
What to choose? MBP 13 M1 16/512 or MBA M2 16/256?
The M1 or the M2 MacBook Air? Your review has been enlightening. However, I think I'm going to make a decision by drawing straws. I really like the M2 upgrades. However, as your review shows, it's hard to bypass an M1 at a substantial discount.
just get the M2 if you can afford. You won't look back and question yourself why you go get the M1 when the M2 is actually fine on its own for your usage and then now you can't get the same resell value as M2 coz it's an older machine that's why it's discounted in the first place. Or you can wait until when the M2 is discounted when the M3 is coming. ITS THE SAME OLD THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Hello. I want to have a nice experience in areas such as video/film, note-taking, listening music, and editing, and I'm looking for a "long-lasting" device. In other words, my priorities include high-quality visuals, quality audio, writing experience, etc.
MacBook M1 - 16GB - 256 (Is it unreasonable to buy it because it's 2020?)
MacBook M2 - 16GB - 256 (2022)
The M2 version is $230 more expensive, but I can afford it. However, some say that if the M2 doesn't have a 512GB SSD, it might experience slowness. Is this noticeable problem?
I think the M2 being more recent is a good thing for longevity. Does the M2 provide a noticeable different experience compared to the M1 based on the features I'm looking for? The issue of "slowness" bothers me, especially if it doesn't have the 512GB.
Can the ssd issue be fixed with a software update?
There is no SSD issue. You have to look at it as it the NAND speed the cause or a reaction? Is it really the lack of RAM for what you are doing? The causal is the RAM, with 16GB then the NAND speed is moot for 99% of us. People presuming that swap is part of your RAM are fooling themselves, it is not, it is a backup and should not be treated as anything but an emergency cache. Why? Because RAM is >50X faster than NAND speed, so if speed is what you are after you add RAM not faster storage.
Apple perfectly planned to fit this M2 MacBook Air in between M1 and M2 pro 14inch
finally an honest review
