Mine does type better though - I am literally faster at editing a document because function layers let me quickly select and delete an entire word (FN + J = Ctrl+Shift+Left) and functions like page up and down are also quickly accessible without moving my wrists. Less finger fatigue than typing on membrane keyboards as well.

In other fields, the tools people use are considered important enough that when people can, they make sure to get the best version of it. If you were a carpenter for a living or even just a hobbyist, you'd make sure to have good quality tools when possible. Those tools usually last longer than cheaper ones, maybe have some extra functions that cheap ones don't have, or they just have better quality of life things for the user that make them more enjoyable to use.
Somehow a great majority of people have failed to apply the same thought process to their keyboards they use day in day out. There are plenty of people out there who type all day and still just use their laptop keyboard or a cheap rubber dome. Some people would drops 1000s on a custom gaming PC and even getting into the details of having the right coloured cables for their case etc, then when it comes to the keyboard they would settle for whatever is the cheapest RGB mech on Amazon and call it a day.
As Nathan said you can still input data with those cheaper keyboard options, but they are not in the same realm when it comes to enjoyment to use. Also I'd argue that these keyboards CAN make you a better typist. I got myself a split layout keyboard and it actually improved my typing abilities as it helped me train out some bad habits I had when typing, which made me a faster typer. Additionally because a keyboard is nicer to use and feels more comfortable (especially now I can have a heavier weight switch to match my heavy typing style) I feel better typing at greater speeds for longer as my fingers become less fatigued so it has in a way helped with productivity. Also with a nice solid alu case with foam inside and lubed switches, the keyboard sounds nice to type on and is now a lot less offensive to the people around me too. Before I would type on a big echoy plastic keyboard that with every keypress it would echo through the house.
This hobby also opened me up to other hobbies too as I learned to solder so I can build a custom mech, now I use those soldering skills in other parts of my life and other hobbies too. In fact thanks to that skill I even fixed a control unit for an expensive kitchen appliance at home that would have cost a lot to replace or have someone come out to fix but I was able to fix it with my ability to solder.

Hi, I'm just getting into the hobby myself, but these are just my 2 cents. While I understand the price point argument, I can't say I can agree with you about the reliability of mechs. Mechanical switches are objectively better than membranes in terms of reliability. They're rated for at least 50 million actuations. These switches are expected to last you at least a decade, even a lifetime for a lot of use cases. I for one, have encountered multiple instances where a membrane or scissor switch keyboard has failed me, so you really can't say that your experience is evidence since they're just anecdotal.
When I discovered their existence, I thought "huh. they're more expensive but they last a lot longer and I get the 'feels' as a bonus." I've been using a mech for about two years now (still all stock, looking into modding and making it better), and I can say that it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.
But hey, you do you, man. If you think a similarly priced membrane is better, then go use that. No harm in that. But I'm not even sure if there are membranes as expensive as mechs since when they sell for around as much as a decent mech, their sales would likely bomb, correct me if I'm wrong.

What Taeha is saying is so true. I got a mechanical keyboard for the first time at the beginning of summer. For the first time ever I actually had the motivation I needed to learn how to touch type. I had tried before many times but always quit. Today, I have been learning to touch type for almost 3 months. I used to type 50-60 wpm. I went down to 28 wpm. But today I can type up to 116 wpm averaging 96 wpm on 10fastfingers and was recently able to average 91 on typeracer (had luck with the passages also). Hope to improve even more as the months turn into years! I never thought I would enjoy typing so much!

I love that you're doing a series to help newcomers get into the scene. 1 thing I really struggle with as a newcomer is that everything is out of stock at the point of purchase. It requires a strong mental focus on what I want but out-of-stock vs. what I don't really want but in-stock. I also find it demands a lot of patience, when your favorite keycap set may take ~1 year to reach you.

Your explanation as to why you use a high end camera and therefore why you use a mechanical keyboard is such a great breakdown for why we invest in anything that might be perceived as "overkill" or "unnecessarily expensive" for our hobbies and interests. Using gear that you are excited about, or a tool that inspires your passion and in turn directly contributes to the overall quality of your work or end result is justification enough. Just hearing that explained so succinctly just really made me happy and I say that the proof is in your product and process. Really great videos. Liked and subscribed. Can't wait to see more, Man!

100% agree with you on "gear" and inspiration. Feeling confident and 'proud' of whatever tool or device you're using is important. A lot of times, the extra money spent only goes towards a "quality of life" aspect. Something that doesn't actually change function, but makes how you EXPERIENCE that function more engaging and positive.

I just finished my first custom build two weeks ago (60% with arrows and 2.25 LShift, Creams, KBDfans 5deg case, brass plate, Razer PBT keycaps). This is the first time in months that I feel motivated to work every single day, and enjoy every second of it. The feel, the sound, the looks of my keyboard invite me to type something, anything, every day. I spend every moment of the day thinking about anything I can go type up, just to hear the perfectly smooth and thocky spacebar over and over again.
If you want motivation to work - a custom keyboard is a very easy way to get tons of it.

if you are refering razer/corsair/logitech keyboards as higher end keyboard,no.
That's not what this video is about, that's just like the scratch of the surface(like he said in the video),there's more to a mechanical keyboard than those gaming keyboards that i just mentioned.
There are much more to a mech keyboard like custom case, custom keycaps, types of switches (not just the cherry mx ones, for example kailh, topre, holy pandas, tangerines) etc.

“Curating their desk setups”. It’s very true. After I built my first custom keeb, I’ve been much happier while working throughout the day. This has helped to make me more productive as well. That aside, the keyboard and phone are our main vehicles to communicate with the outside world. In a way, it’s like an extension of ourselves. It makes sense to find and build something that is tailor made to truly fit YOU.
