      Would you recommend the S55 for souround speakers?

  • @fubarnow8907

    Your information is incorrect. I'll try to help you. I own both speakers and have done a bit of research before buying. Both speakers look the same but are not. It's not that one has an extra driver. The S55 is a 2 way speaker. The 2 lower speakers play the same and then crossover to the tweeter. The S60 is a 2.5 Way speaker, the 3 lower drivers play the same BUT the bottom 2 roll off faster and the upper 6&1/2 speaker plays higher--( covers more midrange ) to transition smoothly to the tweeter. The S60 drivers are not the same as used in the rest of the Signature Series Line. The S60's driver's use a 4 layer Voice Coil and the others do not. Since the S60 are the Top of the Line for the Signature Series--Polk used better 6&1/2 inch drivers. That is probably just one reason they sounded better to you. Another thing to mention is the Polk Powerport located at the bottom of this speaker. Having the Powerport makes these speakers play very low notes, very cleanly--so low and clean I've elected not to use my sub woofer. I recommend playing these for a week or two without a sub so you can learn how good they sound--they are a full range speaker.

      Yours it's what's incorrect. I asked Polk Audio about what you are stating. Their response was: The 3 models in the tower line have the same sound quality and same quality drivers, being the smallest one with smaller drivers (S50), while the mid sized (S55) and tallest (S60) share the same drivers size, the S60 has different crossover implementation, but this is because it's needed since there's more drivers, more power handling, and lower frequency response due to the size of the box, but this doesn't make them cover more midrange, sound any better than the others, or means it's a "top of the line" model. This is a myth.

    With the Powerport located at the bottom of this speaker, room placement can be easier since you do not have to worry about ports against a wall. The feet are well designed and come attached to the speaker with rubber pads on the bottom of the feet so they work well on carpets or wood floors. I find the speaker to be very stable--even when my acrobatic cat jumps up to the top of them. They have magnetic grills which are very nice.

    I just bought a set of S55s. Amazon had them refurb'd for $260 ea, so about $520 for the pair. No refurbs available on the S60s, and they are $450 ea / $900 pair. They're almost double the cost of the S55s; not a small stretch. Even without refurb, you're talking $660/pair for the S55 vs $900/pair for the S60. 36% more expensive.
    You make an excellent point though, about just because these are bigger, they don't actually require more power to play or to sound better. That means that there's no real concern about too much speaker for the room; just play them with less power and enjoy.
    I wish I hadn't seen this video; now I'm having buyer's remorse, even though I haven't gotten the S55s yet!
    (To be honest, I'm satisfied with my current Klipsch RP-160M, but the Polk S55 won't have to work as hard in the lows, so I'm sure they'll sound better)

    Both of these models use what polk calls a cascading 2 way crossover, which other manufacturers call a 2.5 way. Say the main crossover is 2500 hz. Tweeter gets everything above 2500, and the top 6.5 driver gets everything below. (I think polk uses 18 dB/octave slopes.) The top 6.5 driver will have a natural rolloff (less output) at lower frequency. The second 6.5 driver gets crossed over around 500 hz to boost output only in that rolloff range. In the case of the s60, both the lower 6.5's get crossed over at the same frequency, so still a 2.5 way despite having 4 drivers.

    If anyone watching is connecting this to a amplifier. If you have the option a+b. Bi wire and plug tops into top and bottom into bottom four connectors on each end. Will separate the frequency better and sound absolutely amazing. I'd recommend the Yamaha amplifiers the 500 and 700 best bang for your buck. Will sound amazing. Unless you have a really expensive receiver they not sound as good since lesser receiver will only max amp on a specific band not the whole frequency range will not sound as clear as a amp witch deliver the voltage across entire frequency. Hope this helps

    Posting again here.
    I’ve been listening to my S55s for a year, and even without having the S60s at the same time, I feel like the mids are a bit weak in the S55s. I’m fine with the bass, and I have to dial down the treble a bit for it not to be ear-splitting.
    I’m going to sell my S55s and get a set of S60s.
    In other words, you were 100% right. I will go as far as to say if you can’t afford the S60s, charge them and stretch to get them, so you don’t have to do it later when you miss the mids.
    Until then, I’ll just keep the treble turned down a bit.

    I agree with some stuff you said.. If you are using them more for home theater the 55s can be had for alot less and won't be much difference.. If you plan on alot of music then the extra 300 or so prolly will be worth the upgrade.. None the less these are excellent speakers Imo.. Thanks for the review.. On a quick note If anyone is looking at the matching center... I have the s30 which I like alot.. And just had the pleasure of hearing the 35 the highs seemed a little better then mine but the punch with the bigger drivers was noticeable.. Both decent centers its a shame they didn't make a bigger one...

    Yuryev is describing a 4-way crossover (6:40). I highly doubt that it is (and I doubt that he's confident about it because he does hear what I'll describe below). I haven't checked at the Polk Audio website, but I'd bet that it's a quasi 3-way. A quasi 3-way is simpler in design (usually means cleaner) and is like an extended 2-way, not quite a 3-way. I'll explain this as best I can.
    So a simple 3-way means three completely separate (divided) frequency zones (with the appropriate driver or driver group for that range). Doesn't matter how many drivers per zone. Point is that there is no frequency over-lapping. A quasi design overlaps. Canadian PSB speakers take this approach. So why would you want that?
    First let's look at a standard 3-way design. For this speaker to be a standard 3-way would have the tweeter handling just the highs (say 2,000 Hz to 20kHz), then (in this case) the top 6-inch driver taking care of the mids only (say 200 Hz to 2,000). Note, there are no mids in the tweeter whatsoever. Middle "C" on a piano (everyone knows middle C) is 261 Hz. That's the middle of midrange. Tweeter starts at 2,000 Hz, which is the top octave (top 12 notes) of the piano. Finally, the bottom two drivers would be grouped together as one driver (research wired in 'series' vs. wired in 'parallel')(from the crossover perspective) to handle just the lows (20 to 200 Hz). This is easy for the amplifier to drive because it 'sees' one load across the frequency spectrum.
    A 4-way crossover design complicates things, requiring the two bottom woofers to be ungrouped, with maybe the bottom woofer going down to the bottom of the frequency range, while the one above it carries 80 to 200 Hz. I highly doubt that it will be like that for soooo many reasons. How much low output can a single 6.5" driver deliver? Two is better and three is better still. The drivers are the same size, after all. If the bottom driver was a 15", then yeah, a 4-way maybe.
    Secondly, for a 4-way to maintain the same audio purity as a 3-way would increase the complexity, cost and size of the crossover with no guarantee for an improvement. That's basically the gist here.
    The quasi 3-way could be the best for sound in this case, but might be a bit more difficult for a receiver (not a quality 2-channel amp, mind you) to handle at high levels for a long time. But don't worry about it. Here it is. The top two drivers work as mentioned above (and in the video) in terms of the first crossover point at 2 kHz. But instead of the top 6" driver playing down to to just 200 as we would have in a 3-way design, letting the bottom two handle the bottom end, it goes all the way down with them. That means two things for the bass: deeper and more dynamic.
    So far it might seem like I'm talking about a 2-way design if you assume that the bottom two drivers are also meeting the tweeter and playing the mids as well with the top 6" driver. But no. The bottom two are capped off at 200 Hz (playing up to the 3rd A on the piano, a few notes below Middle C). So the mid frequencies won't be stretched in the vertical plane through all three drivers. Anyway, no one does it like that; usually only the top 6" driver gets that duty. That means better and taller vocal imaging, and more realistic soundstage. Not only that, but vocal dynamics improve because it is easier for the amp to focus its power in that frequency range to one driver alone, instead of delivering its power across a wider range. So that's a quasi 3-way. It's quasi because of the overlapping; the three 6.5" all play down to the bottom together, but the bottom two leave it to the top 6.5" alone to carry on to the tweeter at 2 kHz.
    Bonus: While the quasi 3-way can often present more load (impedance) to the amplifier (because the amplifier sees three speakers from 20-200 instead of two), if your amplifier can handle a 4 ohm load then you'll get more current draw, and that means more wattage. That means, again, better dynamics because three drivers are handling the lows. Thus they are individually working less in trio than in dual. That means the woofers do not have to travel as far. This means that they can travel a bit faster, start and stop faster; dynamics. And if you've got the amp, the drivers still have the available cone movement on tap if asked. Party time slam!
    So if your amp has muscle and you have a quasi 3-way, it could be better than the standard 3-way or 4-way all parts being equal.
    How can anyone easily tell what kind of crossover design it is? The tip is to note how many unique driver sizes there are. So it's not likely a 4-way because, as I mentioned, it's expensive, but mostly because we don't see four different driver sizes.

      Awesome post. Too bad most people who need to know will not bother to read it, after seeing how long it is. :-( I learned a lot; thanks for typing it out.
      One question, if you have just a bit more time: without a crossover, how can the sound be "rolled off" on that top woofer?
      Seems like a well-designed quasi-3-way would be preferable to a proper 3 or 4-way, as there would never been any crossover chatter. (no?) I read some reviews of the ELAC model that competes with these S55s that crossover chatter can be heard sometimes.

      @@Smaug1 Thanks. You are resilient. It was waay too long, so I edited it and cut out a lot (still long, but a lot more to the point). I'm not expert but what you need is a 'low pass' filter. This cuts out the highs. There are different order levels (1sr order, 2nd order, etc.), which means how quickly it drops after the cutoff point. You can do some research. Crossovers are made with inductors, resistors and capacitors. The best guy on UA-cam that I'm aware of is Danny Richie of GR Research. He improves on crossover designs from some of the largest speaker brands. Gene of Audioholics is also a good UA-cam resource, but unlike Danny he doesn't specialize in crossover design - he's all about home theatre. Still he has articles to read on his website, and he talks about crossovers in a more novice-friendly way. Hope that helps.

    One other thing: you describe the S55s as if they’re three-ways. They’re not. The drivers both have to handle all the bass and mids, with the tweeters taking over the highs.
    The S60s have some sort of frequency-splitting going on where the upper driver takes a lot of the mids, without burdening the lower two with any of that duty while they’re thumping out the bass. It’s not another electronic crossover, but somehow achieved through tuning.

    Good review, but you’re into is a bit wrong. When you say the top woofer “handles vocals” and the lower drivers don’t, that would be “correct” (sort of) in a three way system. These speakers are 2 way. So the way it works is the tweeter has a high cutoff and high roll off into the woofers, so ALL woofers in a two way set up, regardless of what Polk might tell you when you call (as someone said while pretending they know what their talking about) are producing “vocals” the human voice ranges anywhere from several thousand kilohertz down to around 200hz. Two way speakers, all woofers will play sound at above 200hz. It’s the roll off that separates the woofers. With the bottom most woofer rolled lowest, for the boom type bass, and the upper woofers rolled higher to offer a more “full” midrange sound.
    To qualify, I’ve been building custom speakers for about 15 years. I hand build 1, 2 and three way crossovers of various orders from first order (simple capacitor protecting the tweeter from blowing via low notes) to complex 4th order crossovers. The BIGGEST reason manufacturers put more woofers in a two way set up is to get lower in the sound range. Three 6.5in drivers will play down to, typically, 35ish hertz. That’s equivalent to a 10” or weak 12” woofer. Saving space and yielding a more aesthetically pleasing look.
    With all that said, dude, for your FIRST UA-cam review, you rocked it man! You sounded and looked very professional and your sound and picture quality looked great as well! Idk what you typically do, but you earned a subscriber out of me!

      Kyle, do you think they should've designed a crossover in the S55 at 3Khz(or more) instead of 2500Hz to let the mid driver work better or more like the S60?? I'm liking the S55 I just picked up, but now I'm leaning toward the S60..

    • @Lord_Pistachio_Nut
      @Lord_Pistachio_Nut 4 роки тому

      @@alexkent4592 I do. I think some strong cutoffs for crossover would have made it "feel" more hifi than the "trickle" approach they use. Maybe even a little higher cutoff. 5.25 and 6.5in cones can handle higher frequencies without breakup as long as baffles play nice. BUT at the price point they sell these at, I guess you can't really complain much can you? Lol. For my money? S60 is where its at! But I'm kind of a Polk Purist, and the RTiA9 (outside of the LSiM line) with quality amp is where its really at! Lol

      To clarify this, I've done actual measurements on the S55's. They are set up to have their amplitude vs. frequency response peaks match the formants of speech, and the response of your ears, which is why they sound so good. If you look at the spectrums provided here: www.proav.de/index.html?http&&&www.proav.de/audio/speech-level.html, they match quite closely to an average of male/female speech.

      Regarding the bass, these do need a sub to really sound best (or at least tweaking the tone controls), they show a falling response below 100 Hz. They go down quite a ways, but by around 50 Hz, the response is down almost 10dB from the peak.

      I have the Polk monitor 70s and some friends of mine that lived with me decide to get the 50s because they wanted to get the same speakers I had but didn't want to spend as much. Personally, I thought the 50s were terrible. Also, the big speakers from Polk do best with an external Amp. In fact, I had to replace my Tweeter three times because I was playing at too loud of volume and my amp was clipping causing the tweeters to break. I then bought an external amp which could handle way more power and never had an issue

    I originally bought the s55 speakers, they produced excellent sound compared to my previous tsi300 speakers. But took them back because the rti a5's we're $199 each on amazon, couldn't pass up on that deal. One more thing, for some reason the s55's were giving me a headache after listening for a while, can somebody please explain why that happened? Thanks.

    if YOU GET THE s60 YOU NEED A POWERFUL AMP. AT LEAST 300WATTS PER CHANNEL RMS THE S55 YOU NEED A 200 WATTS PER CHANNEL AND 2 SUBOWOOFERS. AND ADJUST THE EQ IN YOUR RECEIVER, THE QUALITY OF YOUR SOUND ALSO DEPENDENDS THE QUALITY OF YOUR AMP. I LIKE DENON RECEIVERS AND EMOTIVA AMPS.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah novice beware they are sub-4 Ohm speakers, so they will load the amp up pretty good, which increases distortion in some topologies. With that said, if a matching sub from Polk is used with a cross-over, the power requirements can be relaxed considerably. I'm using them with a 20 watt RMS amp, and they have plenty of power, but the amp is set up with beefier output devices with low output impedance, and thus low distortion.

In my opinion these things are overpriced. Looking forward to getting my 60's here in a few days to see the difference. Also going to move the 55's to the back to replace my Sharp's and see if they're worth keeping 💣

      Does your AVR have pre-outs for the FL & FR speakers? IF so, connect the RCA cables going OUT from your AVR to the INPUTS on the back of your separate power amplifier. Make sure everything is powered OFF when you are making these connections.

    • @Smaug1
      @Smaug1 2 роки тому

      I am upgrading my Klipsch RP-160M Reference Premier to these. I LOVE the RP-160Ms. I've never heard any bookshelf speaker than can approach them. I shopped these vs. Klipsch RP-260 and -280, but the Klipschs require a lot more room, since they have a conventional rear-firing bass reflex port. They have to be spaced away from the wall a bit or the bass gets muddy. The RP-280s already have such a deep cabinet that by the time I space them 2' (61 cm) from the wall, they are too far out into my room!
      I was already sold on Klipsch Reference Premier, but the "inverted horn" bass port design on these Polks mean that I can get bigger speakers in the same room, since they don't have to be so far from the back wall.
      I see now that you posted this 3 years ago. What did you end up getting?

      @@alexkent4592 Correct. 100 W/ch from a cheap A/V receiver is not the same as 100 W/ch from a quality integrated amp. I went from a 125 W/Ch Sony A/V receiver to a 75 W/ch Onkyo A-9050 integrated amp, and the Onkyo sounds SO much better. It's pumping out 75 UNDISTORTED Watts per channel, where the Sony would be heavily distorted at 125 W and a lot less.
