    Because we use a combination of kicker and bow mount Minnkota, we manage the direction of troll and speed. The bow mount is typically set at 3.0 or 3.5 and programmed to hold a bearing, while the kicker is set to maintain speed (SOG) with a neutral impact on direction of the boat (steering slightly offset to compensate for off center thrust). Our speed target, at the ball, is determined by the Fish Hawk reading. Thanks! Jay

    Jus inherited a 16' starcraft from father inlaw that passed and he trolled the big pond in it and so will I. Very informative vid so TY. Main takeaway for anyone fishing small boat is weather.... Always respect mother nature especially when it comes to wind and wind direction. I've been on the the lake in dead calm conditions to 2-4 footers within 30 min reaching 3-5 there after which is to much for smaller boat.

    Good stuff.
    I do things very similarity in my 14.5ft tiller. I guess I would be classed as a "tiny boat" lol, but everything is the pretty much the same, I just get less days on the water waiting on safe weather.

    Outstanding Video with great info! Fished with my Dad out of North Point chasing salmon 30 years ago. Now I finally have my own boat and looking to get back out there this year.

    Hi Cap'n Gerard, I plan to augment my gas kicker with my electric trolling motor that has the modern direction control, etc. I haven't done this before. How do you get the electric and gas to work together? Do you get the gas kicker running in the desired general direction but pushing the boat a bit slower than you'd like, then use your trolling motor to bring your boat up to the desired speed? Do you then use the trolling motor to fine tune (and control) the trolling direction and speed? Thanks

    Nice video. I just got a 19’ lund and hope to be out getting some salmon at some point this year. Been a bass fisher all my life but being in Wisconsin I got a walleye boat. How heavy of ball you use on your down riggers?

    • @LakeMichiganAnglerTV
      @LakeMichiganAnglerTV  6 місяців тому

      most folks are running 12lb or 15lb. 10lb can work too but you get a good amount of blow black when fishing deep

    Hi Cap'n Gerard, Can weighted steel successfully be used in place of dipsey diver wire? Thanks

    • @LakeMichiganAnglerTV
      @LakeMichiganAnglerTV  2 роки тому +1

      No you wouldn't want to do that. Two very different types of lines that aren't intended to be used outside of its primary function.

    That's not a small boat!
    I know, the coast guard would agree. To them anything under 65 feet is small.
    I'm chasing salmon in a 14 ft boat. Have to pick the right weather.
    Thanks for the tips on organization.

    You want to use a trolling bag for boat control, not a drift sock, they are two very different things.

      😂

    • @bobhunter8992
      @bobhunter8992 2 роки тому

      @@icecmu seriously! A drift bag is used primarily by walleye fisherman to slow down their “drift”, while a trolling bag is used to slow down and control their “troll”. Trolling with a drift sock will destroy it as it’s made out of a much lighter material.
