Bunnings is owned by Wesfarmers (Kmart and Coles), whose major shareholders are Vanguard, Blackrock and State Street. Same as Woolworths, IGA, Danks (Mitre 10 etc) and pretty much every other large company, because our politicians helped them do it.

Basically the same behaviour in NZ. Growers are getting the nickel and dime treatment while the supermarkets are announcing record profits. These gluttunous companies either need to agree to split the profit with growers through fair contracts and good faith or get broken up. They do everything in thier power to eliminate any potential competition, so the Government needs put the boot in one way or another.

Very true. About 3 years ago, dairy farmers were getting the same price per litre of milk AS THE 1970s! And other farmers say the price hasn't chabged since 2009. I was in Woolworths and saw a shrivelling "quarter cabbage" for $2.84. It was 1800 grams. As I was taking a photo of the scales I hear the PA say "security check grocery department". They were FAR too backed up at the registers to do anything due to understaffing. During covid I was getting a FRESH unshrivelled cabbage the size of a soccer ball for $3 from the local fruit and vegetable store.

Came to Australia 3 years ago from North America. Was shocked to find this one company called bunnings had a monopoly. Where is the competition? How does the government allow this one company to dominate, and worse, treat Australian suppliers with such utter contempt? What's particularly galling and outright offensive is how they wave their aussie credentials whrn its convenient for them while spitting in the face of their suppliers. Nice work, bunnings. Take a bow. How proud you must be. Shame on you.

Not just Bunnings, there's a duopoly with basic groceries (supermarkets) in Coles and Woolworths. Look at all areas, there's at most a "big four" in control, basically everything is controlled by semi legal cartels.

You've basically summed up my experience as a former employee of Bunnings. I was in the first induction for a store opening in 2003 and worked full-time for 2.5 years, then quit, but returned as permanent part-time for a similar length of time. Things seemed all rosy for the first 12 months or so, then the place began to show its true colours. I enjoyed my job for the most part in many ways, but eventually I became disillusioned with the bully boy mentality of some of the management team. I was fortunate to land a job with a local rural/industrial business where I remained for 9 years.

    • @user-dq2ym1nn9k
      @user-dq2ym1nn9k 2 місяці тому

@@darrenrogers5735 Yes, my personal observations is: the floor staff are of course doing all the hard grunt work - helping out other floor staff because we have all been absolutely thrown in the deep end and are struggling to swim, drowning in fact. Then the so-called first tier of management, who smiled, listened and trained us through induction and promised to help and support me through learning my new role, after induction suddenly ***vanish*** into the ether...and are now actively avoiding having to do any grunt work because they're above that now as a mini-manager. They would appear visibly annoyed if I asked for help - even on my first day on the floor. Quickly realising I was not to bother going to management - just rely on the amazing hardworking floor staff from other departments, but it was the first sign of things being 'off' and not as they seem. Everyone complained about it, everyone had had the same experience. I have been in this environment before (Target) and felt it was fake atmosphere with most just wearing a mask of 'polite niceness'. quit before I lost my mind & soul.

I lived in regional Australia where there were lots of mum and dad hardware stores that had a wonderful variety - some of them being around since the 1800s. Bunnings bought land in our area wth us locals forming protests as we didn’t want a big corporation coming into our area undercutting all our local businesses. At first our local council informed Bunnings that the site they purchased was too small for the custom they would generate which made our community happy. Then out of nowhere and a few years of heated back and forth Bunnings was coming to our community like it or not which ended some of the smaller hardware owners. Nick thank you for your courage and bravery coming forth and expressing what many communities have been saying for a long time Bunnings and other big corporations shouldn’t have had the power they have to stronghold councils and suppliers in getting their own way. "Our government’s lack the strength, the moral compass and the appetite to do anything"
Our governments lack the votes to do good.
Most people are stupid and rote vote for awful parties like Labor, Liberal, Greens and Nationals. These awful parties collect so many votes from stupid people that power is effectively granted to them - to do with whatever they like.
What they like to do is befriend powerful cronies who lavish gifts on them in the form of donations now and overpaid "jobs" later when they retire from politics.
This is why I say that our governments lack the votes to do good. If you want your government to do good then you must stop rote voting for awful parties and vote for people who promise to do good and actually do it.

Good one for coming forward, when I used to work in the nursery industry, we would want to order new plants on the market and whole sellers would tell us we couldn't as they were all reserved for Bunnings, it was a bit unfair, then when they do become available Bunnings always undercuts the price by about a dollar to make sure they get the sale, the problem was, people would always come to pick your brain and then go and buy from them, people need to realise you may pay a dollar more for your plants at the smaller outlet, but they are also willing to help with their knowledge and ideas, try that at Bunnings, sometimes your lucky to find help let alone good advice, unfortunately it's us the public that put our selves in this situation, then these large chain stores get bigger and bigger and weed out the competition.

Good on you mate, most consumers don’t think about the producers these days. What has happened to our country? I would prefer to shop in independent nurseries or grower direct, but understand that the turnover is in those big box places because that is where all the herds go. Best wishes to you, I hope things get better. Your place looks fantastic!

Thank you Nick for speaking up. I recently purchased two young trees from my local " Bunnings " for my garden a Pink Dogwood and a Red Magnolia, each tree was just 1 metre tall they cost me $99.00 each, i have been buying plants for my garden for rhe last 44yrs and have never encountred prices like that before for new plants. I did end up buying them as i wanted to complete my gardening at the time. Later on i went to a local well known nursary to check there, and they were charging the same price. Every one today is following one another for bigger profits. This blatent Greed must stop. Take care Nick, all the best 👍 nsw

To add some balance, I have been dealing directly with Bunnings as a supplier for well over 10 years across 3 separate businesses and have never ever experienced anything like you mention. Granted this is in another state and not involved in the greenlife end of the stores however Bunnings has never thrown their weight around rather we have always been able to deal in collaboration for the growth of both businesses. In all cases we used our own transport to deliver to each store and were never forced to go onto any core carrier program. I don't dispute the hardship you have faced and I do empathise with your situation but wanted to express another side from my experiences. Being a grower of produce rather than a supplier of manufactured goods I believe does offer huge risks with this risk all being forced on the growers so I also welcome any government enquiries and hopefully some constructive action/legislation that can better help protect growers.

Good for you as an ex Bunnings team member I can tell you that the way the staff are treated is just as appalling as a company they should be ashamed of themselves

Chris, the reason why I was tentative about voicing my trading history with Bunnings was I didn't want to see great team members have their jobs placed in jeopardy.

Great man to stand up and tell it how it is. These companies would be broke without using there suppliers like you to fund their “business “. They make billions and send you broke. You are a legend sir

Good on this single grower for speaking out. What if it were 10..... maybe 100. Then, big companies have to listen if their supply is compromised. More so if their purse strings are compromised.

Most organisations start off with their relationships as a partnership. Over time the organisation starts thinking they are the boss and the partnership goes out the window.
People working for wages have no idea the pressures business owners dealing with every day.

I worked at bunnings for four years when i was younger, never once thought that bunnings had this much control and monopoly power over the industry. Would like to see some competition or some sort of government intervention.
