I’m crap at explaining things so copy and paste it is. The I-V-vi-IV progression is a common chord progression popular across several genres of music. So that’s a chord progression as you know there is a lot more and all create a different tension/emotion
Man just discovered you channel. I litterally spent 3hours looking at your videos on production, on mixing etc.... Really really well done contente! Mature approache, great teaching skills to share liquid gold to artists, producers and engineers in the most easy going way possible. A good teacher is the one that is able to explain complexe concepts to the most novice person ( able to dumb it down as some say), YET without losing the most crutial details out. You sir have reached a stage over the years of doing your videos where you have gained so much confidence that you truely are a great teacher, BRAVO and keep it up maestro ! Hope to spend more time checking your other videos and also to see new ones pop out. Cheers mate, DAM
Thank you for all the hard work. Ive been producing for 20 years now, but Im the tech guy/engineer/sound designer. Over covid I really understood that I needed to learn theory and play piano. Your content here just fllled in a lot of blanks for me and I appreciate your effort. Without producers and music technicians like you I don;t think Id be moving so fast to realizing myself as a true musician. Big up.
Will this was a great video on building chords easy, if you had humanised the velocities and had given the chords some shuffle with the note positions these would have sounded even more epic! Thanks always your content is always on point
Hi Will, this is a great tutorial and you really are a superb teacher, you make complex subjects easy to understand. I have learnt so much from your weekly tutorials over the course of the last two years, thank you!
Hi Will, love these short and sweet tutorials - very easily digestible and content is astoundingly impactful for how simple it is to follow along. Kudos and keep up the great content.
Recently discovered this channel - great content. Will definitely be spicing up my chord progressions with these tips. Hopefully this technique will elevate the disco song I'm working on.
Will, great video as always. But one thing I would like to add: The chord "G-B-D-F" is no diminished chord but a dominant chord. Such chords might work really well in certain situations. But well, not really in EDM.
Great! Brilliant video, as usual. It's probably better to call it an Am+9 at 2:55. B is both the second note and the ninth, but since the third isn't being replaced by the second it's more common to think in extensions (7, 9, 11 etc) rather than suspensions (2nd, 4th etc). It's Am+9 rather than just Am9 because the latter would mean that the seventh is also in the chord, so it's +9.
Hey, I've been following your videos..They are great! I know you use ableton but would love to see some classic sounds like faithless insomnia you did in serum done in either Garageband or Logic Pro! Also, is there any chance you could do a Brian Eno synth sound recreation..Stuff like 'for an ending Ascent' or recreate U2 where the streets have no name intro or the Coldplay 'Life in technicolor' stuff he did on the viva la vida album! Thanks man!
I started out with basic major and minor chords, then I would revoice them, I didn't like the sound of the 7ths as they make the chords sound more jazzy, then I discovered there is a chord called sus 4, and I like it a lot
Hi Will, I am learning EDM production from scratch and your videos are by far the best for me. It's so well explained and everything makes sense, even to a music-noob like me. I have been going through this video step by step and it's great. As DAW I am using Apple's Garageband for now. What is the name of the song again? Best Wishes from Germany Angelo
Always appreciate EDM tips, but would be nice to see this with something other than all the white notes, which is where I guess most people are struggling with the concept. Some of us poor people have DAW's that don't have thw ability to filter out scales (Reason.....). Just imho. Top content as always Sir!
This is a great tutorial, thank you! Can you tell us what you're using to get the sound of your piano? Failing that, does anyone else know? Btw Chord Bible downloaded. Thank you and Amen brother.
There is nothing diminished about the last chord in the first example, it's a basic dominant chord, V chord of the scale(major chord with a flat 7th) typical for building tension. Very common in jazz or blues. In jazz when it's resolving to I chord, as in II V I progression, or in Blues when whole progression I IV V is based upon dominant chords.
Heya. Thank you for this! It helped a lot to get perspective. I pretty much started a week a go with producing music, so pretty new to all this. Id like to ask a question though. How is your abelton setup? Or, how can you make it play the notes while moving them around?
Agree with that, but really depends by song to song and purpose of some chords. Sometimes just a simple triad can be even better than more complex chords, depending by the part of the song and arrangements/sounds used on the given part.
Unintentional though it may be, there is some misleading info here. A sus4 chord is comprised of the root, 4th and 5th intervals. A sus2 chord is comprised of the root, 2nd and 5th. Dropping the 5th in a major or minor triad one scale degree DOES NOT make it a sus4, nor does raising the root in a major or minor triad one scale degree make it a sus2.
0:46, but also octatonic. The blue note in blues makes the extra note in the scale. And it sometimes is even used in chords in blues. Definately western music. Just sayin'.
What's your biggest struggle in music production? Let me know in the comments!👇
For me biggest struggle is getting vocals in tempo, to the point where i mostly leave them out & just make it an instrumental mix.
Awesome video as usual will. It would be good if you can do one on chord progressions
@@neilmccourt259 Thanks! This one is on chord progressions, though! Can you be more specific?

loving it! this tutorial is a staple for sure!
if anyone finds out the technical term for a sus2 or sus4 by moving the 1 or 5 please lmk!
Moving the 1 (root) will result in a different chord altogether. Moving the 5th to the 4th is no longer a sus chord but that’s a diminished chord

Sorry for being nerd, but if you rearrange notes of your chords without moving the bass, it’s not inversion but “chord voicing”?
omg thanks so much for this. i finally understand what sus4 sus2 and 7th, 11th 13th etc. means haha

Hey, I love your videos! Do you know if it's possible to only play notes within a certain scale on Logic?
Unintentional though it may be, there is some misleading info here. A sus4 chord is comprised of the root, 4th and 5th intervals. A sus2 chord is comprised of the root, 2nd and 5th. hey, out of interest what app do you use in your videos to make all the music??
Ableton Live :)
How are you copying the note lengths in the piano roll like that?
I'm on Windows by the way.
maaaaaah guy :D
What is the chord progression in thias example? Is it I-vi-III-vii ? because the second and fourth notes are lower than the first one.
Takeaway from this: "Be your own chord pack". (I got you!)
😂
Treasure chest of knowledge
Glad it was helpful! Anything else you're struggling with?

Can you tell me How to make Happy house Chords ?

Which vocal sample pack did you used in this song ?
I think it was from Splice....can't remember which!

What isbthis software called?
Great video just a shame Ableton does not sure what's each chord it's like logic does for the producer to understand the theory
That "diminished" (dominant septime) chord is not that weird. You can still make it work.
cool
Appreciate it! 🙌🙏

so basically for A minor; put three or more and never on black cause that sheet will sound off to summarize.
Doesn’t it become a ii chord?
What's funny is there are paid courses online for this exact thing
Absolutely! I do believe that both have a reason to exist :)
