Here's how you can connect your Shure MV7 directly to any camera and get great-sounding audio in your video.
If you don't want the cost and complexity of using XLR, this video will show you how you can connect the Shure MV7 direct to any camera using a simple audio cable.
Works with Canon, Sony and Panasonic cameras.
Thank you, Andrew!! I wish I stumbled on this video earlier. Spent a long time trying figure how to properly connect my MV7 with my Sony ZV-1F. Conducted many different tests, and some didn't even produce any audio lol... I followed your steps of setting gain on both mic and headphones to 6 illuminated dots on MV7 and camera gain down to 4. Seemed to work very well but I think there are still a few minor tweaks to make.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video! I was really confused why my audio sounded so ass, I knew that I have a really good microphone
this was exactly what I needed - thanks!
Thanks Andrzej!
Simple and clear.
You are welcome!
This worked like a charm! Thank you!!
This was super helpful! Thank you!

Thank you sire
LOVED THIS. thank you for making life easy
You are so welcome!
great video andrew!
Really helpful. Thanks.
this was so helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect solution! Thanks so much
Glad it helped!
Great video Andrew, thank you!! Ive just spend hours configuring a Elgato wave 3 to my Sony ZV-E10 and trying to get rid of a "buzzing sound". If only I had found this video earlier. Finally sorted it by reducing the LV on the camera. It would be interesting to see how the Shure MV7 compares to the Elgato wave 3
The Elgato Wave 3 is a nice mic and will serve you well. As you have found the pre-amps in lower-end cameras ( sub $3k ) are not fit for purpose! Why they don't just fix it and stick $50 on the price of the camera I really don't know. One tip, play with the distance of the mic from your mouth, the closer you get it the better it will sound, but too close and you'll get popping.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy great tips and thank you very much. I will give this a try
thanks a lot. i will give it a try.
Thank you so much it's really helpful🙏
Thanks
What I've found for myself is that I was trying to connect male to male 3.5mm to my shure MV7, as well as HDMI cable to my PC from my camera to mirror everything i film on the screen. However the sound was awfully buzzzing as some of the guys mentioned here. As soon as I have pulled out the HDMI from my camera, 3.5mm to 3.5mm works like magic. Main thing to reduce camera audio levels to 1 (I have sony a7iii), also I've set mic for 30dB and set my level of output (yellowish colour dots on microphone) to somewhere around the lalf
Glad it worked for you Anthony
Did you find any solution to have the mic and hdmi connected?
@@shadilagrate also trying to connect HDMI and mic simultaneously to the cam. Any progress so far?
Thank you for this video!

Excellent video!
Thank you very much!

Great video thanks for the upload ❤🐼❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you very much
You are welcome
Thanks. It works pretty well with Sony ZV-E10
Thank you Marco
thanks you so much
Great vídeo, Andrew!
What mic are you using to record this video? The sound is just perfect! I'm looking for a microphone that doesn't pick up my air conditioner noise while recording and isn't seen in the frame.
Greetings from South America!
I'm using a Shotgun mic ( Rode NTG3 ) in this video, but this is unlikely to not pick up your air con, it may very well not pick it up as much as a mic like the Yeti due to the narrow pick-up pattern. If you're recording it's going to be better to use a decent shotgun mic and leave a couple of seconds at the start of each recording where you don't speak and use that to grab a background noise sample and simply remove it in a program like Audacity ( which is free ), or Adobe Audition, there are lots of tutorials on UA-cam on this and it's really easy to do.
Great vid. Your setup is superb. Great lens, lighting, sound quality, and super clear and useful advice of course. I bought a Shure MV7+ Mic. I have a Canon 90D DLR camera. Can you recommend which cable I need to use to connect the Mic to my Canon? As the cable that comes with the Mic doesn't fit. Any other recommendations welcome.
you need a audio cable with a 3.5mm pin on each end. It should be TRS not TRRS like this www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Headphone-Auxiliary-Compatible-Earphone-Silver/dp/B088CZLHGL/ you should also make sure you plug it in the "MIC" input on the camera and not the Headphones socket - easy mistake to make that is
Thank you for the video! Does it work with a 3 pin (TRS) cable? Have you tried with a 4 pin cable (TRRS)? In theory, the 4th pin is responsible for the microphone.
Awesome content! Now the question is, when plugged to the camera and computer at the same time, can you still use the features of the app to change the audio, like applying compressor, limiter, EQ etc. or you only plug it to the computer just to power it and cannot tinker with it?
yes you should be able to use the app too
really helpful
Glad you think so!
Andrew if you film with the iPhone 14 pro max upside down, do you have to put it the right way up in post? Thanks Barry Spain
Hello Barry, No, but if you start to film one way and then turn it around while you're filming then it will be upside down and will require adjustment
thank you very much andrew! it works for me (zve10 with mv7), but doesnt sound great and i dont know what i can change. sony mic level is 2, shure mic is relatively high. is there anyhting else that i can change? my audio sounds very flat and distorted..
what does the mic sound like if you just plug it into the computer and record a quick audio sample?
Did you noticed buzzing noises in background? I did when connected mic directly into Sony a7 via mini jack. Just wondering if I should connect mic to something like Zoom H6 and later to camera.
Going XLR to a Zoom H6 is always going to give you better results. And if you do use the Zoom option and then connect the Zoom to your camera via the line out on the Zoom you will have to adjust the line out level. The camera will likely be expecting mic level which is much lower, I cover this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/DZeERiN_LYo/v-deo.html . But before you do that just check the cable, maybe swap the cable out. Looking on the web it seems this is an issue with some Sony cameras, the FX3 really suffers according to the comments. Also, make sure the audio cable isn’t crossing power cables, this can also cause an issue.
I appreciate you!
Thank you for saying so
Can this be done with the Sony a5100?
Great video. Can you power the MV7 directly via USB to a mains adapter rather than have to connect to a laptop?
Yes you can
Muchas graciass amigooooo!!!!
thanks
Well I might just have to try this as I’m in the process of transitioning from my webcam to the ZV-e10 and love the sound of my MV7. Just got in the MKE600 today I’m planning to boom overhead but might be able to boom the MV7 instead.
So many options, seems there there’s always something else to do 😂😂😂
The MV7 isn't the ideal choice to boom, but your MKE600 is. If you want to connect an XLR mic directly to your camera without using something like a Zoom H6 I did this video that shows you how: ua-cam.com/video/tM_IAqODqpU/v-deo.html in this video I use a Shure SM7b, but this works with the MKE600 also.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thanks so much. Agreed the MKE600 is a much better choice for booming. Still playing with it and doing my own audio testing, etc.
Appreciate your videos keep it up.
Can you use the MV7 via XLR to a 4 Channel mixer then out to My ATEM for recording purposes, but also run a separate cable out of the MV7 via the 3.5mm or USB out to the PC so that the mic can be used in Gaming for chat? Any help is Appreciated Thx.
There should be a headphone out jack on the mixer, you could use that to pass audio to your camera. This video shows how to connect a XLR mic to your camera: ua-cam.com/video/tM_IAqODqpU/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video, I have the mv7x it’s doesn’t have the usb outlet or the headphone outlet either. I am using the Sony A74 camera what is my cheap option to linking the mic to my camera?
Just follow this video,Connect Shure SM7B To Any Camera
ua-cam.com/video/tM_IAqODqpU/v-deo.html this should work with your MV7x
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks. Alternatively I do have the go 2 wireless mic. Someone once mentioned that I could also use it as a form of mixer with the Shure mic and connect to my camera. Please do you know how to go about this logic?
Thank you for this video! I have a question - I followed these instructions, but hearing static. I'm wondering if it is the audio cable I bought? I tried your same instructions on my hyperx and experience the same issue.
I have 3 new audio cables are on the way! Hopefully, this does the trick!
Let me know how you get on, the cable would be the first thing that I'd look at
Thank you, how did you record the audio for this video, I don't see a mic and it sounds great?
I used a shotgun mic the Rode NTG3. The only reason I did't use the MV7 is because personally I don't like the mic in the shot and I move about a bit, a Shotgun is perfect for when you want the mic a little further away and off camera. But from a quality standpoint the MV7 can and does sound just as good as my shotgun mic. I also have sound panels on the walls that I made. Good audio depends not just the mic but the the room you are in and the correct positioning of the mic to your mouth. I have a free guide that covers all this kind of stuff and the equipment I use: bit.ly/3DGNOLw
Thank you so much!
Hello, Andrew, great content! On the thumbnail for this video it says "PRESS TWICE TO CONNECT" with the little red arrow pointing to a button on the MV7, is this necessary for it to work? My MV7 is connected to my SONY VZ-1 and I was able to use MV7 as an external microphone the first time I stumbled upon your video, I was so excited, but now it's not working anymore. I'm wondering if I'm missing something? I've gone over your instructions at least a couple dozen times and have tried several audio cables but the issue persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
First thing and this is by far the most common problem and still to this day I make this mistake myself ( all the time ). Make sure you have connected the cable to the Mic in and not the headphone in - let me know.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks for replying. ZV-1 only has a Mic in, and , to my knowledge, no headphone out. It's red, too, and the port cover has a little image of a microphone, so I know it's the correct input. Thanks again!
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Solved! I think the MV7 wasn't getting enough wattage, I had it powered on via phone charger, which is strange because it should be enough power for the microphone, since it lit up and I was able to adjust input levels. Anyway, the MV7 is being picked up by the ZV-1 now when connected to my laptop, if anyone is having a similar problem.
@@CatBacon-qc5othi I am about to buy mv7 and will connect to my sony zv e10, di you get a good audio using this metode?
@@NicoOmera yes
What if you are wanting to use headphones too?? Then how do you do it
Haven’t tried this, but the Sony Zve10 has both audio jack input for a microphone and headphone output for you to monitor sound. So that might work
You saved my ass!
What if your camera doesn’t have the sound card input. I have a Sony A5100
I don't think that is going to work for you, you'll have to record the audio to another device and sync it in post production to the video
Make new video how to connect shure mv7 to sony zve10 camera please sir
Does it it affect audio quality when a headphone jack is used?
no, the audio is exactly the same
Sir I bought mv7 and scarlet 2i2 and cloudfilter for windows pc but I can’t access these things in input my computer is not giving me option to select mv7 please help 🙏
If you have the MV7 USB you don't need a 2i2 or cloudlifter. If you connect via a 2i2 the computer will see the mic as a 2i2 and not the MV7
@@CourseBuildersAcademy i got it thankyou for you comment
How do I connect *two shure mv7 microphones* to a sony ZV-E10 camera?
You would have to use a program like Ecamm to bring the audio and video in, you can use as many mics as you like here is a link: bit.ly/3pTMBfT
You know what, you got me thinking, I'll shot a video that shows how to do this in the next couple of weeks - Subscribe and hit the notification button and you'll get a notice when I release a new video

Does this microphone work with webcams?
Yes it should do
doesnt work at all with the Sony ZV1FBDI
An 8th for Americans, half quarter if you're Canadian lol
Camera doesn’t even recognize the mic! It doesn’t light up or anything. This didn’t work unfortunately.
You still need to connect the mic by USB to a computer
Can this be done with the Sony a5100?
I can't see why not, I've used it on the following ZVe10, A6400, A6600, Canon C300, BMPK 4k, GH5, GH5s, GH6, FX9 and I've never run into any issues with the huge array of cameras I use
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Ok, maybe it meeds a mic jack. The a5100 only has a micro USB and HDMI.
