For anyone who wants to do it with pixel layers (pictures), just precomp the image and activate the SUNBURST icon (rasterize), then apply the Set Matte. IT WILL WORK
THANK YOU!! I've been going absolutely bonkers not knowing why the set matte wasn't working. After hours of searching why you're the first one to actually explain it. Thank you so much.
Thank you soo much for this tutorial !!! I was struggling (for more than 4 hrs) to figure out how to properly use Set Matte... your video is well made, easy to understand, and very detailed... Thank you again!!!🙏
Thank you so much - I have such a similar story to many on this video. I've been confused about this damn effect for about a year and finally decided to watch this video after reading so many threads. I SHOULD HAVE JUST WATCHED THE FIRST TIME! Great explanations and making sure your points were understood.
thanks Ace, just remember that if there is a key effect on the keyed layer to set “include effect and masks” in the set matte options. didn’t mention that :)
That is great - thank you. Another way to do this is to use the transform effect to manipulate position scale and rotation. this allows you to stack transform before or after other fx as you wish.
I'm so happy I decided to google this for like a 10th time and found this. I've been fiddling with set matte for a while and it's just not working. I managed to get it to work once then never again. The fist option worked! Simple! Thank you for this
I dint know why this completed tutorial and easy to understand, only have few likes, another video about set matte and single case only, have more likes?! WTF
Thank you so much, great tutorial! I have one question- If I uncheck "Composite Matte with Origin" it pixelate the layer a little bit (the written word on this layer looks weird on the edges). Why is that and how can I fix it?
hi. thanks! yes I see that behaviour too. when you uncheck it, it gives an aliasing look.. not sure why this happens. I would not use that but instead use the matte layer underneath and keep it visible which gives the same result.
the point is that you can use a mask/matte in one layer separated from the source. if you put a mask on a layer, any transform you do to that layer includes the mask.... very difficult to have flexible control of them separately. this is the idea of a clipping mask - when a mask is separated from the source, and Ae's track matte is a way to do that.
this is awesome but not what I'm trying to do. I'm just looking for an effect that I can copy and paste to a bunch of text layers to have a solid color background rectangle behind the text (fitted to the text) sort of like the transparent black bar in snapchat
if you want a rectangle behind the text as an effect, there are several ways you can do that. the effect way can be this combination one after the other: simple choker effect - use matte view fill effect - set the color of the rectangle you want cc composite if you want more padding add the fast box blur before everything.
The .aep file I was sent was said to have a 'Set Matte' effect that's supposedly missing on my AE 5.5 When I looked into my effects panel I see under channel I have a (16)Set Matte, while another tab below says Missing and under it was (8)Set Matte. Is there a difference? How do I resolve this?
it seems the set matte effect you have on Ae5.5 supports only 8 bits per channel. whereas on current versions (it's been 18 years since 5.5) it is 16bpc. you could resolve this by manually placing your 8bpc set matte effect on the layers with the missing effect and adjust it to the same parameters as the missing effect. you can see the parameters of missing effects - they just don't do anything. place one over the other and make sure the parameters are the same, then you can delete the missing effect. good luck.
Now after checking it seems that there aren't any layers using Set Matte. Could it be upon loading it would remove it? I do notice there are some texts that are wonky.
@@christianmotos youtube is not the best place to solve these issues. please ask in the After effects adobe forums - they are very responsive I am sure they will give you the answer to your problem. community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/bd-p/after-effects
try right clicking on the column header and add the modes column. or try clicking on the button toggle switches/modes at the bottom of your timeline. there's also 3 little icons at the bottom left of your Ae interface, the one that has circle and square overlapping is the modes column which you need.
@@AeBlues Thanks for the reply, I've been messing around and finally got it to work, had to disable the visibility and leave the layer on top. I wish it would just act like a normal track matte, Set Matte is very helpful but confusing at the same time.
@@tonybp you don't need it visible if you don't need it visible (sometime it's useful, like for creating boxes for lowerthirds). and it doesn't have to be on top :). track matte is very simple and it always works! but it's limitating...

Glad to see a more in-depth look at this effect. Thank you for making this tutorial. The continuous rasterization tip solved my problem.

how did you call up the effect in the timeline at 2:33? You did some sort of search for the effect with a hotkey.
it's a plugin called fxconsole by video copilot
I love you.

@@roei.aftereffects Hi thanks, I tried this and I couldn't get it to work. It just fills in the text with the color 🧐 no rectangle
@@PolymerJones here's a similar approach: ua-cam.com/video/bD5xw9m-sc4/v-deo.html
he uses curves on alpha instead of simple choker on matte view.

I'm finding there's zero difference between the Set Matte effects and the regular Track Matte function - the latter is just easier to use 🤔
3D ?
i have expressions on my layers and if i try to precompose it does the animation in diffrent timing of the layers

Forget 'After' Effects - Remember 'Before' the Effects
Does this work with Cinema 4d? If not what does?
if you mean the C4D Renderer then you could use merge path operator from within the shape content to matte out parts of the shape
@@AeBlues will look into it. I'm a noob thanks.

It's ridiculous that you have to go through so many steps to do something so basic and to get it to work intuitively. AE is just pathetic.
