For everyone suffering from this, ITS ANXIETY, you are too anxious when eating. You cannot choke if you chew your food properly. Try to relax your arms, yourself and eat peacefully. Overcome your fears.

It's whenever you start to feel full inside near the end of the meal, is when the anxiety starts for me, because when you feel the food starting to pile up in your oesaughegus, you feel like it's not going anywhere.

To anyone having this for solid food, (I only eat yogurts, soups and mashed potatoes) It takes time but, YOULL overcome it. Its ironic how Im telling you this while I have the same problem, but we all now this is in our head, just stress.
The human body, as well as animals bodies too, are made to eat, and for this.
So to anyone that has this for liquids, know that you cant choke and die of your saliva, and dont worry for water neither !!
I was only eeating yogurts (and do like its a mouth wash, it will become as liquid as water !!) since it had no bumps in it, 4month ago (when the phobia started, 2 days after eating nothing).
Then I slowly added sugar. Was scared of the bumps but... when I thought about it, sugar melts ! So I knew that I couldnt choke or die.
Then tried soup. Real liquid/no bumps,
then progressively went for thicker soups ! Then tried thin mashed potatoes! I used to filter the little smallest bits of the powder that I used for to cook the mashed potatoes, then started to avoid filtering it!
Also making it a thicker consistency,
Now Im at a point where I add raw whole eggs in the mashed potatoes whilte I stir its preparation, and wait for it to cook the smallest pieces of the egg... Do not wait fully but enough to have small parts of egg cooked.
I know I have not yet fully recovered,
But as I was writting this I saw the progress I made. We will all overcome this because we, as small babies, used to eat like it was nothing LOL! its just our mind thinking we cant.
Chew properly, Distract yourself/watch videos while eating if it helps !
Don't hesitate on sharing your journey by replying to my comment,
    and remember,
we will overcome it, we will do this.

i have suffered from this phobia for about 20 years now. anti-anxiety meds have helped me deal with it but when it first started back around 2001-2002, i was on a liquid diet for FOUR MONTHS and lost 85lbs. then i was introduced to Xanax, which helps a little bit but that fear is still always there. after my mother passed away last month, it felt like it was gone for a couple of weeks. probably my brain was distracted with the severe grief that the eating issue was put off. i started a new job and thought i was heading in the right direction but now it is back and with a vengeance. my throat muscles literally freeze up the split second that your natural swallowing takes place, causing me to "retry" and then i end up either drinking (gulping fizzy drink puts my throat into "rhythm") or if i really freak out i just spit out the food into the trash. i have been trying to get help for this but to no avail so i just gave up and lived with it for half of my life. this is the worst type of fear to have...

The scariest thing in my life literally just happened yesterday when I choked on a breadstick that I didn’t chew all the way.
The way my throat felt clogged made me lightheaded. I was anxious for hours, staring in the mirror down my throat, thinking a piece might still be in there….
It was terrifying and my parents just made it so trivial saying “just swallow it” or “push it down you’re being ridiculous” like I wish it was that simple, but clearly they don’t understand the fear of choking and how damaging that is to someone who experienced it. If your a parent or going to be, please comfort your children, no matter what age or gender, when they feel scared and stressed. The rest of the world is already cruel enough. The least a loved ones can do is listen and reassure you.

I get it with both food and liquids and I feel so hungry all the time. My jaws ache because I chew and chew and chew until there's barely anything to swallow but then I still struggle. I sip the tiniest bit of liquid then hold it in my mouth before doing one of two swallows to get it down. It's as if I've forgotten how much food or liquid a person can safely swallow and it's also as if my throat doesn't work properly anymore. I try and describe it to people like if you've got a big tablet and water in your mouth but feel like you daren't swallow it. I do suffer with anxiety anyway and it's been really bad over the last year but now this has started I feel even worse! I choked on my own saliva, so for some odd reason it triggered my brain so bad that for about 3 weeks after I was suffering with 6 panic attacks a day. And major anxiety. I felt like something was wrong with my throat. I stopped drinking water and eating. I was tracking every saliva swallow, and every time I swallowed my saliva it was in fear, so I end up having an endoscopy 4 weeks later and they tell me my throat is fine. So that weight got lifted off my shoulders and I was able to eat a little more. But drinking water and swallowing my saliva still gives me fear. I think it’s because ever since I was little I have choked on liquids. I say I have anxiety that just sits in my throat. Because I feel so much tension in my throat. I was told to learn to relax when that happens to me, Dr. Said your throat is a muscle when it relaxes the liquid will go down and you will be able to breath. She said I promise you are not going to die from it.

You need to make peace with food. If you cut your finger on a sharp knife you are more cautious with the sharp knife next time, not the blood. The blood is a symptom of the cut, and your swallowing was a symptom of anxiety due to anaemia. When you fully accept that food was not the issue, but anaemia anxiety was, you will be able to swallow effortlessly once more.

Since I was like 11 I’ve had choking issues and honestly I was never really scared of it. I chocked rarely but it still happened but very short like 1 second. Now I’m 19 and realized I develop phobias easily. And this has become my newest phobia just a couple days ago like 4 days ago. I was eating cereal (cinnamon toast crunch) while watching Tik toks and kinda laughed I think. I’m kinda used to chocking but it only lasts 1 or 2 seconds usually but this time it lasted like 4 seconds but it felt kinda long lol.. honestly I was just panicking. Bc I panic easily. Then it finally went down and I was shaking and got too scared to finish my cereal afterwards 😭And idk now my throat feels tight and sore now. When I eat I have to take small bites and chew a lot and I put my hand on my neck. And I make this noise. I’m mostly just scared bc my throat isn’t normal. If it were I wouldn’t be scared of choking. And I’m so scared to eat alone now. But I’m working on myself and it’s all just anxiety. I struggle with anxiety a lot. I hope one day I can laugh at this and eat normal again. I believe in myself and don’t feel hopeless.

I think I’ve had this fear for a while without realizing until reading the comments today. To think I’m not alone in this feels relieving. It sounds funny but about a year ago, during the summer of 2022, i choked on a drink from chick fil a and ever since then, I’ve been having an extreme fear of swallowing liquids and choking on it. Up until now, the chances of me choking on it were literally 2 out of 100. I don’t know why I suddenly developed it but sometimes it’d get easier to swallow where I’d be able to swallow with a good amount of water in my mouth but some days, it get to the point where I can’t even swallow a teaspoon of water alone and it would take me over 30 seconds to swallow it. I want to savor the liquids I drink but I can’t. I cant chug anything like I used to it really sucks. I’m 16 and i don’t know what to do. I saw a comment that said to try to do hypnosis of some sort but other than that I’m not sure, I may need to get professional help because it genuinely feels embarrassing trying to explain why i haven’t gotten my drink down to at least 3/4 🤦🏽‍♀️

i don’t suffer from this fear/phobia, but my child’s father does. He has had this fear for as long as I’ve known him but it’s progressed over the years, as has his anxiety as well. anxiety disorder and phobias seems to have a correlation, the anxiety absolutely intensifies it. john (my childs father) was told a story of someone choking on their food and being fine then later on passing in their sleep from the food still being present in their esophagus, im not positive that this story was true or was told to instill more fear into him, which the person should be ashamed of. John rarely eats but has a few select “comfort foods” that he KNOWS that he can reasonably tolerate but those are slowly becoming “trigger foods” as well. he went from an overwhelming fear of the unknown after dying (extreme panic attacks in the middle of the night/day) to being overly fearful of choking. I’ve never brushed it off, I’ve never made him to feel bad about this but there’s only so much that I can do to help him get through this. I’ve suggested meal replacement shakes for the time being, so he can get actual nutrients into his body. He cannot take pills/vitamins (they’re always in liquid form) and pretty much anything new, any food that he has never eaten is an absolute NO! the mind is a powerful thing, telling yourself that you’re choking and the constant lingering thought of it amplifies everything and from what it seems, the mind almost tricks the body. The mind tells the throat, I’m choking or I know I’m going to choke so then your adrenaline starts, your throat begins to tighten, your palms get clammy and it’s pretty much over from there, your entire body believes that you in fact are about to choke on your food or that you already are choking. when john is struggling throughout his meal (we don’t sit down as a family to eat, our son has had a few fits where he “thinks” he’s choking but it’s just a learned behavior) I try not to pay too much attention to it, I don’t want to amplify his thoughts by speaking about it or even saying the word “choking.” so, I tell him to close his right nostril and breathe through his left until he feels a yawn or sigh coming. this is almost a “reset” button for your sympathetic nervous system, it helps calm you down and relieves a bit of anxiety. it doesn’t always work (i think it doesn’t always work because the fear of choking is a constant thought, even if he isn’t coherently thinking it, his subconscious is). i know this is a very long comment but I haven’t seen anyone ask, how do I help my loved one that is struggling through this, what can I do to facilitate them overcoming this fear? it’s an awful thing to live with, it’s an unhealthy thing to move with. your body is being starved of vital minerals and nutrients. i really do feel though, that anxiety is the root to all of this (for him at least) or there is a traumatic event that took place and your brain goes back to that event, every single time you put a piece of food into your mouth. John went vegan and it seemed to put the fear/phobia at bay for awhile but it comes back VERY strongly every few months, it never goes away, ever, but it does seem to not affect him so severely at times. he sent me this video, specifically to read the comments. He’s felt so alone and so isolated in this fear, that no one around him can relate or understand what he’s going through. I appreciate anyone that has taken the time to read this, I know it’s a lot but I’ve run out of ways to help, to facilitate a healthy eating environment and I do not want my child to learn this fear or to absorb it from his father.

I've recently developed this phobia too, in the past I have had times where I'm eating something and when I try to wash it down with a drink, the drink itself fails and comes back up again then I start coughing and gasping for air. I don't know if this is the same as choking though, but I've convinced myself that I have something wrong with my throat and can't swallow properly.

It’s always best to first speak to your doctor to check your throat which is most likely absolutely fine as what you are describing is fairly standard symptoms of a swallowing phobia. Once you have the all clear from your doctor you can seek therapy or follow the techniques and tips we share here on our channel to overcome this. In essence you have likely had an event that has given you a heightened awareness to swallowing which causes anxiety. Anxiety consequently triggers the choking sensation,

Facing it over and over again and still not being able to swallow, to push that ball of food down, without diluting it first with water or my tongue. It is very deceiving how easily they put an end to his phobia, and quite upsetting.

Thanks for replying to my other comment. Listen, I know you probably get loads of comments every single day but I'm really struggling with this choking phobia of mine, I literally dread meal times whereas I used to love food and I never thought twice about chewing it then swallowing it. But when I'm sitting at the dinner table, I now take about 45 minutes to eat the meal whereas I used to eat it in about 10 minutes, sometimes I can't finish it because I'm chewing it so much until it's liquid then I swallow it and even then I still feel like I'm going to choke.
It's like my body is preparing for the worst every time I swallow the food and it's a total nightmare. This is honestly the worst type of anxiety I've ever had in my entire life (I'm 30 now) I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I think what makes this phobia worse than other phobias is the fact that you have to eat, whereas if you're afraid of spiders, all you have to do is walk away from it but I have to eat meals or I'll just lose weight and possibly die.
I should mention that I can eat softer foods and small snacks without any problem, so I'm pretty sure this is just an anxiety thing but it's so debilitating, because if I'm eating a spaghetti bolognaise for example, I can sit and eat that without even thinking about the possibility of choking and I don't have the panicy symptoms over it, but obviously I don't want to be eating spaghetti bolognaise for the rest of my life. I want to be able to enjoy the other foods that I used to love eating.
Lastly, I was at the hospital on the 7th December because I had another incident where a piece of meat got stuck on it's way down my throat (I don't think I chewed it properly) and when I tried drinking, the drink couldn't get by and came up again. Eventually it did go down but it took over 20 minutes. When I saw the doctor that night, he just said that he didn't think there was anything wrong with my throat, (again I didn't actually choke, it was just the food sticking at the back of my throat and wouldn't go down quick enough) So I guess I'm in the clear and it is just an anxiety thing but it's just so scary when it happens.

Sorry to hear about it dude. At least you’re doing better than I am. Wish I can eat a meal within an hour or so. It’s so bad that I just don’t eat and drink meal replacements. Always hungry. Been to the doctor they just send me away wish I can get some help at least. I almost choked a burger well not choke my mind thinks that, but I was still able to breathe it was just stuck at the back and I had to cough it up. And some days like today I haven’t eaten anything just been drinking my meal replacements. Hoping for better days, for us and everyone. I’m 30 too.
By any chance do you have acid reflux? I do. And what tips can you spare me? Thanks

    • @James-4812
      @James-4812 2 роки тому +1

@@neckshot8594 Thanks for your reply, I don't know if I have acid reflux, it's possible that I do but any time where food has got stuck on it's way down, it's either because I didn't take regular drinks while eating the meal so the food kind of piles up, or I didn't chew the piece properly. But it's so scary when you can't wash it down, the drink just gargles in the food pipe and it either pauses for a second then flushes it down, or it just comes straight back up again.
I think the main thing to remember is that it's not the same as choking (I'm not sure what you call it. Is there a name for that symptom?) choking is when the piece of food blocks your air pipe and you can't breathe, cough or speak and you have to get someone to dislodge it. I don't even want to imagine what that feels like.
