It feels so good to watch such a perfectly executed project come together. The finish looks great and the room is so functional. A cozy top story bedroom.
Hi, I thought I watched all Mike Holmes productions, I guess I was wrong. Now I can watch every one on UA-cam, even repeats, TKS. Now I'm a senior, I can! MH was the best on tv now on UA-cam, TKS again To MIKE and his workers. God bless you and your family- families.
I love Mike and his crew. I tear up on many of the episodes. I'm an architect and whenever anyone posts asking about building work, my first response is to hire an architect. Contractors like Mike are few and far between. Your architect is the one who will over see things and make it right the first time.
You are a blessing to so many! I see issues you deal with that I imagine we live with in our old pieced together home. We just don't delve into them because we cannot afford to truly deal with once we open it up!!!! Keep up on your wonderful, generous gifts to all those so deserving. Blessing you from Wisconsin, USA
Building codes in Canada are very similar to the US. There are some things that are beyond US standards. With that, i am still surprised that handrails are not required to be returned to the wall at both ends. This seems like a very legitimate safety item that is required in the US so loose clothing doesn't get caught on the ends when going up or down the stairs. I saw someone in an old house wearing a loose sweater get it snagged at the top of some stairs on the handrail and it spun them sideways and they rolled down the stairs. Love the attention to detail and building above minimum code at every turn.
"Every bedroom needs a window for fire escape" Sounds like a great opportunity for a roof-top deck with stairs down to grade. (I am only 11 min in they might have done that)
I rewired the addition on our house. The guy that had the place before me was supposedly a journeyman electrician. Either he never touched the wireing or he was incompetent. When I was done, take a wild guess how many juntion boxes there were? NONE! All electrical connections are inside of plug boxes, switch boxes or light fixture boxes. That's the way to do the job.
@@BearStar1they are NOT receptacle boxes! They are new work/old work boxes. Used for more than receptacles. Used for switches, coax, cat 6 etc. not just receptacles
@@BearStar1 Sure they are. And in my case, the only difference between the boxes I used for switches and the boxes I used for duplex recepticles is where I put them and what I put in them.
We moved i to our house in 1990. Everything looks good. One small thing they put on a ridge vent for the roof. It was a decoration no vent cut in the structure.
2nd thought, I'd remove all sides and top and rebuild with wood like you did the trailer wood studs and walls and roof and just keep it and that way you could move it around on the property, since it may not be road worthy any more.
Yeah, that electrical was a nightmare. You almost wonder if there should be a law that if you buy more than 5 junction boxes at Lowes/Home Depot it triggers a Code-Enforcement response ;-)
We put a 42’ beam like that in the front of my parents house, it was a huge job, but their house had a sag in it that had to be jacked up after 40 years and now that we’ve changed it out and put that monster in I don’t think it’ll ever sag again
My brother wanted the bedroom in his attic, but we convinced him to put his office in the attic and then convert his old office into a guest room. Still trying to talk him into some sort of escape ladder system on the side
Look at that woman's eyes. She has not been sleeping. Glad Mike could come in and fix this. BTW, anyone else ever expect that Frank will come in, see the electrical, lose his s***, drive over to the people who did it and tell the camera person, "Turn off the camera... People should not see what's about to happen."
Only use certified electrician with permits. They should never of let this hack(s) in the house. It's a 2 day job max to wire the upstairs addition. And get it inspected.
Watching these videos, I feel like I wouldn't want to build a house unless I could afford to pay Mike to be the Project Manager and build it way over code.
I wish more builders would use that timber strand material and not cheap out with regular Douglas fur. That stuff is harder to deal with but it's really straight and true
Douglas fir? I wish we had douglas fir in Ontario. We get the crappiest spruce wood here for framing lumber. If you want to pay the extra money for the timber strand, it is a great product but you will have to find a custom home builder and pay double.
@Faruk651 That's typically what we do is big custom homes, but a lot of the homeowners Don't want to pay the extra added cost. A lot of the Douglas that we get are complete garbage anyway, It's always all twisted and bowed.
I've found lately that if you want good dimensional lumber and don't want to have to select each piece yourself, you need to go with manufactured products. The last shed I built had some of the worst lumber I've ever seen, yet was labeled "select", implying that someone actually viewed that piece before it was bundled. Fortunately, I have a local sawmill that I now source my lumber from, and can get custom cuts within 24 hours............................
@@karlbrundage7472select doesn’t mean someone viewed the piece before it was bundled lol. Just that it came from supposedly a better quality of lumber that is supposed to be free of wane, pith, etc.
Never, ever do work without permits. They cost money, yes, but they also give you hope that the work will be done professionally. Fly-by-night contractors scurry away when you ask them about permits, that should tell you something.
hmm , i am not completely happy with that roof buuuuut , its leagues better then the 'traditional shingles' crap apparently so many places in the us used , as it looked like a ''faster faster faster!'' slightly prefabed for smooth montage at flat surfaces at the expense of strength to mimic classic metal roof sheets+ehh 'small trusses' to rest on with tar/wind 'papper' underneath or such but hey at least it looked better
I am with Holmes on most things but when he says go to the government, I think of the crap show Trudeau and it makes me sick to my stomach. Other than that we're good
I want to feel bad they spent 25k but it's hard cuz they are stupid. No, you cannot just build a room in your attic. Have you noticed no one else has done this?
Again Mike is wrong you can put a room in the attic you just dormer out the roof take out all trusses so have enough height to walk you can also make a walkout to a rooftop deck
Id actually agree with you even with the needing to cut out trusses i, but it needs to be done right with regards to structure, electrical, hvac, exit, etc, Which in this case seems like nothing was done right.
@@delyn13at this point we need how to take care of your house school and teach them the legal ways to build and tell them if you cut corners you will be fined and inspectors will fail your house
This is my second comment . We,the good people on earth, need more a lot more people like Mike Holmes
