- "Like Lions Do" -- Right Away, Great Captain (with special thanks to Michal IÄ o)
"He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife...he only dreams of places now and of the lions on the beach". --Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway) There are no lions in this film, the "preludy". The lions are what come after it all, after the clip ends.
So when I met my husband, he was on stage singing this with tears running down his cheeks. His band was playing at a small venue in Atlanta. He had just had his heart broken by an Emily who had been giving herself to another. She had called to tell him she was leaving again on his way there.
To this day he is the only one I've seen match the emotion of this song. He was so hurt that day but he poured it into this music. I felt the gravity of it and it woke me up. I looked around the room and almost everyone had stopped to listen. His earnestness and willingness to share his hurt with another made me love him. It was humility and honesty that I saw and it moved mountains.
You married Andy??
His wife is named Amy
_So How did it go_
This song holds a special place. Got me through some times..
Asana23 same
By far and away the best RAGC song - can't wait for the 3rd album!
i FUCKING LOVE this song, and practically every song by right away great captain! manchester orchestra is also great. andy hull is majorly talented.
I love this man. RAGC and Manchester Orchestra songs NEVER get old. He's just an amazing song writer.
i think i broke my replay button..
Andy Hull, you have captured my heart.
just heard this song for the first time, seriously AMAZING.
Love this.
I've seen videos of him perform a few of the ragc albums live but can't find a video of him performing this song live and I wish I could cus it is my favorite of all three albums, the insight in his music is so amazing he puts so much of him self into It and for this project his skills as a writer really show through. to Andy hull , king of the american indie folk !
clint brunke
Yes! And I love what he did for Swiss Army Man!
Such simple lines but they mean so much. He puts so much emotion into his music that the depth is felt without complication
what a beautiful voice :,)
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Listening to this masterpiece many times over has given me a freaking rectal prolapse... but in a happy way!...
this song gave me chills... sooo amazing!!!
Impossible not to like this sound!
i don't know how i found this but i'm so in love
Honestly. it just adds to the genius of the man. Enough said
I've been throwing up over this ledge for the last 7 weeks
and you've been throwing history to hell
I've been writing almost everyday that I've been gone
do you still remember how my beard once felt
I've been eating seaweed from a whale named Emily
she could swallow me, or help me swallow pride
We wade under the tow like diamonds
We wade under the tow like diamonds
Like diamonds do
I've been watching you look at a locket from your mother
or perhaps it's from a girl you don't speak of
Do you miss her when she's sleeping
Do you find it hard to eat when
everything reminds you of her steely ghost
So to captains of my captain, how can I become a captain
Get the strength I need to pull this one around
I will wait under the tow like lions
I will wait under the tow like lions
Like lions do
Oh my God, what am I doing here?
Now I walk this ship of golden brown
You sit back covered up in sounds
That don't come from my lips
You know they don't come from my lips
And you can try to break the silence
While you're making love with violence
To my flesh and blood, a traitor
Oh my flesh and blood are traitors to you now.
Oh my God, what am I doing here?
Oh my flesh and blood are traitors to you now.
Oh my God, what am I doing here?
What am I doing here?
Thank you ❤
The saga should be adapted into a series of novels!
Excellent song obviously. Also great video, I especially like how the action is saved til the climax of the song, I had to rewatch when I saw the movement, which is brilliantly pulled together. Good work man.
OH I LOVE THIS SONG. YAYYYY.
This makes everything in life seem so beautiful and yet so futile.
I think he did once... but he cast it into a fire and has been eating himself up over it ever since. (He channels that pain into making the rest of his songs heartwrenching and beautiful.)
such a good song, thanks andy!
It is like a hard edged Elliot Smith...I am in
i love you RAGC.. you put my mind at ease.
Great lion vid, looking forward to enjoying more...
I looooooove this song.
But it makes me cry.
The struggle.

Has Andy Hull ever written a song that isn't heart wrenching and beautiful? ....I don't think so.
2:41 greatness starts
+Sam Cavanaugh 0:00 Greatness starts
@StoptheVerse it's just...the bare naked truth. he says everything so perfectly. lyrically and musically. it's never lacking anything, or pushing an agenda that doesn't need to be there. manchester orchestra might just be the last great rock and roll band
@PHATgrandpa Thanks so much man. Makes sense. :) Take it easy
I love the pictures where did you get them?
❤
@JoshD8282 This sounds like an interesting story, tell us more.

Andy Hull 4 President
Where can the film for this be found @romanoaj31
Does anyone get the symbolism of the whale? Or is it litterally what he says? Always wondered. :)
super late but the whale named emily was a sailors tale that ate sailors with depression
@fatchicksdigme67 well apparently, it's pictures they took from the book 'The Old Man and The Sea'. It's a great book. You should try reading it.
By the way, your name, so damn offensive.
Just saying.
like diamonds do?
Wtf why not release this as a Manchester Orchestra song it sounds just like a few songs on Virgin Losing a Child
How?
Does anyone understand the part about "I've been eating seaweed from a whale named Emily"? That part really confuses me. Theories?
+Tristan Schalkx
Judging from the imagery and the next line's content, I'd say he's having a physical relationship with an unattractive girl to get by.
Old sailor folk lore brother. Emily was this fabled whale that would eat sailors suffering from depression!
+Lord_rillifane thanks dude! New sea lore is always great
from a previous comment...a girl said he was dumped by a girl named Emily.
@danieldance123 it happened cause you said it haha
@TheXxmrtylerxx and then like lions do
Andy Hull is god.
That is an insult...
A whale named Emily
