The new Astra is 4,374 millimeters long and 1,860 mm wide. It is only 4.0 mm longer than the previous model. The wheelbase increased by 13 mm to 2,675 mm. Despite its muscular and confident stance, the new Astra's practical trunk with adjustable floor offers up to 1,339 liters of luggage volume for the driver and four passengers (Astra Hybrid 1,268 liters) when the rear seats are folded.
The new Astra is based on the third generation of the highly flexible EMP2 multi-energy architecture, with Opel DNA embedded from the beginning of development. This means that the handling is both balanced and dynamic, and the new model is - like every Opel - “Motorway-proof”. In other words, high speed capability was the primary development goal.
The steering and lateral stiffness of the chassis (McPherson strut suspension at the front, torsion bar at the rear) are designed for high yaw control (damping of movement around the horizontal axis). The new model provides strong stopping power when braking and remains extremely stable in corners as well as in a straight line. The new Astra's torsional rigidity is 14 percent higher than the previous model.
Order registrations for the new Opel Astra opened in October and will be available to the first customers in the spring. It will initially be launched as a sporty five-door model with coupé-like lines; The elegant Astra Sports Tourer estate version shown in the pictures will also arrive shortly.
