- Here is my first experience with Spitfire Audios new orchestral package BBC Symphonic Orchestra.
In this video we take a look at the strings.

Paul said that the loading time wait is a spectacular feature that gives you time to gather your notes, make tea, go to the loo, etc.
Buy yourself an ssd m2
@@PeterPridantsev I have 2 which is where I keep my libraries (that are all batch re-saved)
@@PeterPridantsev Like he says in the video, most other libraries that use Kontakt load just fine on a hard drive
Would love for you to check in on Hans Zimmer Strings a year later with the new and improved updates and see If it has resolved any of the criticisms you've addressed.
I love Kontakt's batch resave feature that improves the load times by a lot. Kontakt all the way...
Your demo made it sound better than the official promo videos I've seen. This thing sounds pretty impressive!
Thank you Daniel! Great as always!
Thank you, Daniel I always want to understand your views on the different libraries. Cheers, Thorsten
nice video, mate. some strings superb. on the 'con' side, the cello was unconvincing.
i'm going to buy and this was a big help.
I can see why the video is that long and divided into parts, because you spent like more than half the video waiting for the bloody samples to load...
Wow been waiting for this
Daniel, thank you so much. Still taking the time to watch the two hour video. The detail that you go into is amazing. Quick question for you what piano do you use in this session? Also what reverb do use with that piano?
Load times are fine. I just got mine, loaded quickly for the first track and then within seconds for subsequent tracks. Totally fine and mine is not a top end PC, 16 Gb RAM.
Hello from November 2020. They have NOT fixed the staccato timing issues.
Spitfire always nails their Basses the most tbh
"Give me the fucking note!"
- Daniel James, 2019
That little Spitfire app that pops up when you open the VST, is that something separate that you install or part of the VST? Sorry-newbie question.
The Celeste was so quiet because it's basically that quiet in a real orchestra. It's not meant to play with a full orchestra because of how quiet the instrument's mf dynamic is. In general though, most of your criticisms of this library were spot on. Such a hit-or-miss collection of instruments... When it hits, it's basically the same level of quality as their past offerings. When it misses, it fails hard.
where is the bottle mic potition tho, that one was MY FAV
Why do the tails of the French Horns' notes sound so bad? Is that something they will fix?
very good jobs thank you
it takes a long time to load despite an SSD? o because you're loading it with HDD
Woooooow!!!
Hi, Twitch
Why does he use so much reverb when he’s showcasing stuff like the samples are so muddy in this
YESSS ! KONTAKT LIVES FOREVER !!! HA HA HA !!!
Looking to upgrade from my 10 year old EW library. Trying to decide if I should go for this or a different Spitfire library. The price of this one right now is very good for the next week though
I was in a similar situation and ended up upgrading to this. I also got educational discount on top of the intro pricing which was good at 600 US bucks, not bad.
@@yeppy013 upgraded now too and I love it!
You said it sounds like the extra reverb via the dial sounds like it’s the same space. You’re right. I can tell you it’s an impulse response recorded in Maida Vale studios. If you look at the log files for the install or the VST plugin code it mentions a MV1_IR1 file. Also the code refers to eDNA effects which I think they will add in a future update.
I have no loading issues at all (!), I can play as soon as I see the plugin / change the instrument. I use an ordinary SSD via USB 3.1. (Gen 2). - Daniel, you really should start using SSDs... at least for your most common libraries - the difference in loading times is staggering - even in Kontakt.
Do more videos testing libraries pls, if you will! You're merciless! Try mixing mics, also the library has stereo width. EQ highs off to get that distance effect. I'm currently 1 hour in your video... You're still not using the library to its full. I don't see EQ in contact, but stereo width is there. The library sounds good actually, it may be fine if you play with all it can do. Stereo width+EQ is a must for every section. Otherwise everything will be in your face. 1 or 2 RR and 2 layer dynamics are put-offs though, you're right... Keep 'em coming, please, you're doing it right! Oh, and you can play with release in kontakt too, you know, the AHDR curve in kontakt... You can't expect the library will sound good for ever possible use out of the box :D There are mic positions to help with this issue! It doesn't sound bad, actually. On the other note, I never was a fan of spitfire... EWQL hollywood sounds better in my opinion. OH yeah, Vienna new series first look when?! Cheers Daniel, keep 'em coming when you can, it seems you're having fun with these, and so do we!
As much as I really like the sound of their libraries I had to abandon the mural string library the load times were around 5 to 10 minutes I could not solve ....
JVMC, Of course, first batch resave the library. And if you are on a PC, disable Windows indexing (for faster search) of the files on your sample drive(s).
Wow, I have an all in one computer. PC, windows 10, and I use external 2TB SSD’s. I have 32 GB of ram and I thought my load time was bad. No where near this. I feel your pain though.
And if anyone is wondering, I do really like this product. Some of the percussion sounds like the anvils could be better. East West has better sounding percussion and more choices in my opinion. Getting it on sale on Black Friday, I think it was worth it.
I can't remember where I saw it, but did one of your followers in the live chat say Spitfire were going to release Brass, Strings, Woodwinds, Percussion separately? Is that true?
No
Spitfire always had great recordings but really bad workflow cause of the bad programming. For me, they should ask for some help from Cinematic Studio Series guys.
Cinematic Studio Strings, is my favorite strings patch. They work as they should with great legato and great velocity layers transitions. They just need more post edit in sound so they can produce that Grandeur recording of Spitfire or Berlin Series for example.
very true , cinematic studio series guys are beasts I think spitfire should get some help from them.
So if I have a 2018 MacBook Pro with 16 GB of ram, is that enough to run this? Thanks.
Maybe go for the core edition instead?
I am running it on a 2014 MacBook Pro.
@@joshofsorts I wish spitfire have trial version. I have the same 2014 MacBook Pro 16 inch 2.8GHz.
I wonder if everything works so far for you.
@@andywilliam367 I haven't had an issue with Core. I haven't tried the Pro version with all the mic positions yet, but I am tempted right now to try...
@@joshofsorts wow, that's amazing still kicking. I'm worried buying the Pro version because of the minimum requirements of machine, but very tempting because it sounds so good. The black friday also almost end 😌
The new MacBook Pro 16 Silicon not coming yet.
Try it on ssd for us and let us know if it’s quicker.
You should have demoed this on SSD. Spitfire should have this as a requirement. It all loads very fast on my machine from SSD running Logic. I was first skeptical of this library when Spitfire's marketing stressed this as a product for collaboration, rather than a full and complete symphony package. That felt off to me, and set off alarm bells. There are many fine aspects of this library, the strings are stellar. But the lead instruments are the weak link IMO. Ultimately it's worth the cost with the discount, and I'm glad I bought it. Great review, thanks!
All libraries should run on ssd`s for 3/4 seconds loading times, reason why is very simple, composers when are "in the moment" want fast, accessible loading time so they stay in the moment and wont lose it while waiting on a library to load,if you can use a M.2 ssd,its the same price as an ssd but with transfer rates of 32Gb a second instead 6Gb a second, for this reason hdd hard rives are not a good choice at all,you can always open the Spitfire ssd take it out of the box and install it internally, good luck composing.
you're finding it an age to load! Well, mine eats up all the RAM! Does anyone else have the same problem?
Just saw the ThinkSpace Education video about this library, and there was zero issues with load times or playability. So what gives? Did he get a copy that was tweaked? Used it right from the SSD sent to him...Seems weird. I know many have complained about load times, but here you have someone that supposedly installed it right on camera and zero issues whatsoever...fishy?
Guy used the SSD. Daniel is using a 7200 RPM hard drive.
@@lahattec really? I thought Daniel was given an SSD from SF as well. Why would anyone transfer a sample library to an HD drive? Seems highly bizarre for a review.
@@jaketanner109 No. His drive hadn't arrived, so he downloaded it.
@@lahattec And Daniel doesn't have an SSD to use? Why on earth would anyone doing a live stream using a spinning drive for a library this large? Maybe I missed where he said that in the beginning. But given this info, I think it's hardly a cause for alarm...as libraries get larger and technology get's more complex, I'd imagine that an SSD is a requirement not an option these days.
I was going back and forth between BBCSO Core and Nucleus, but I'm definitely going with Nucleus
Out of interest did you get Nucleus Core? I’m between the two you mentioned above and Albion one for my first orchestra library
@@iansaunders6645 Yeah, and it's SOOO good and super worth it.
🙏
Will these loading issues exist if I use streaming off an SSD?
I am considering buying this on Spitfire's SSD.
He probably is using an SSD at his tier
But yes SSD leaves HDD in the dirt, 10x faster
@@TommyVarekai He is using HDD in this video. That explains the delay. Will certainly buy this on SSD.
Melo Keyz oh wow thanks! Buying HZ strings while it’s 40% off since the update fixed all the downfalls, may have to up my 16gb of ram before i buy BBC
What reverb is he using? I could use some recommendations.
Bryan Walls Eventide Blackhole
Bryan Walls Eventide Blackhole is amazing. Gogetit boy.
Picked it up on the latest sale! Awesome!

Man, Spitfire libraries seem to be really inconsistent these days.
Hello Twitch 👋
what reverb use for the strings?
As far as I know, he uses ArtsAcoustic reverb for everything. He loads his reverb on the busses for Strings, Brass, etc and adjusts the mix to set the levels.
I wouldn't recommend that method, but it works for him. I like more control over my reverb, so I have separate reverb busses that the instruments are sent to.
Now do a video on what you recommend instead!
What kind of reverb are you using on the strings Daniel?
Animating the Realm orchestral stuff usually has ArtsAcoustic reverb on it
Daniel James thanks
HI TWITCH CHAT
that what happen if you not using a ssd and it the real reason
I personally think spitfire audio should stick to making percussion library, they have good strings library Nd all but their precussion no one comes closer for that authentic movies sounds
You make a living at this. You need to update to M.2 SSD technology for all of your computers. It's a tax right off anyways.
SSD's are the ONLY way to go at this point with these huge sample libraries.
Really like these videos but sorry normal HDDs are really ancient by now. That said it really seems to look pale against the OT Sine Player.
Horns sound like they are missing the attack.
Why don't the devs sell this expensive product onto a SSD dongle?
they do, in fact, they recommend it
They do give you an option to buy it and delivered it to you on an SSD.
Hi twitch
Thank you for this video. Load times take forever... will prob not buy
Thank you Daniel. Their player seems a disaster on Windows. Also don't like the GUI at all, lots of wasted real estate. Think I'll stick to Kontakt libs!
Hmmm. Is it just me or do you find these not as good as audio imperia jaeger or nucleus?
Mine loads in 5 seconds from SSD. It shouldn't take that length of time.
I have both but my bbc so and kontakt stuff are on external. The whole template spitfire supplied for Logic loads up in about 3 minutes.
Twinsunian T That is possible I guess
I always avoid Spitfire because their libraries are massive, like they don't know how to efficiently compress their samples, and the sound is not even that good. Best example for huge libraries that actually sound good is anything from Orchestral Tools. I love Audio Imperia for that very reason, that their libraries are so small and lightweight, but they sound so good.
I recently moved to another country for my studied and I couldn't bring along my actual rig, so I work now on a laptop and I tell you, storage and size of the library becomes as important as the sound in some cases. I need to be selective of the libraries I have on my hard disk and there is no place for libraries like Spitfire ones.
I have to disagree here with you.. From an objective point of view, their samplings are of high quality SOUND WISE, we can always dicuss how to tighten up samples, but yet again that is performance/subjective based point of view on how to perform them. As a composer/film editor working with film, Spitfire is the top 3 for samples to work with regarding to Mock-ups. Audio Imperica, Orchestral Tools are different in sound because they tend to go towards more epic punchy sounding scores, therefore also played very much more with an agressive tone in mind. This is not the point of view which Spitfire has, and i know that is on purpose. They see the other side of the scoring industry which is the 60 % that is not epic/punchy/BRAAAM type of scoring, which there is a market for. This is the market they are targeting, therefore the BBC symphony fits VERY well into that palette, it is what their other libraries are not and which not anyone of the libraries out there are, which is a replica of the BBC orchestra sound which is famous for its more classical sound and not "film-sound" like for instance the London Philharmonik orchestra has (known for many as the Hollywood sound). So when you compare it to be as the Audio Imperia stuff, you are basically comparing to different pieces of fruit, they each bring something to the recipe, they have different taste and sometimes the EPIC is not the taste to use, which is a more common phrase that directors does not want here in Europe!
From my (objective) point of view they have nailed everything with this, minus the loading/purging problem they have with their player, but again in a whole template it doesnt matter, cause if you are a professional in your field that uses this to mock-ups, you will put it in its place and use it to whats its good for. In the end we need to sell the pitch with a mock-up for a director/producer, if they dont like the sound of what they are hearing and its not close to what they will hear at the scoring stage, then my friend you are not likely to be in the HOT seat anymore :)
@@Simongain I can see your point. In my humble opinion I do feel that the Berlin line of products from Orchestral Tools are better sounding libraries than Spitfire. Yes, I write more epic stuff and maybe that's why I haven't preferred Spitfire. But I still feel Berlin Strings, Berlin Brass and Berlin Woodwinds among other amazing libraries from Orchestral Tools sound much better then Spitfire and lend itself to film score mockups equally well. That's only my opinion and I am fine if we have different opinions because in the end, music and sound and audio is all up to taste and we can't all like or dislike the same things.
@@5ammy13 i will actually agree with you on some areas with you on this one and i respect your choice.. though when we think of samples its their performance and stage they are performed at that define their sound.. and yeah thank god for it is different, cause we now have so many choices.. sometimes orchestral Tools nails it, but other times, not so much.. quiet stuff with orchestral tools can be a pain in the butt, but with Spitfire you can easily acheive this 😊 so it is has it ways it works 😁
Spitfire Audio do have one Problem°! They record and sample the Instruments in a very very bad way that this sound like Shit! Then they colled it "Hans Zimmer Strings" or "BBC Orchestra" and hope that everyone buy it! Sry NO GO NO WAY.....
They need to stop recording these things at AIR studios and move into a PROPER CONCERT HALL for this stuff.
Spitfire just making money with naive musicians is not surprising. :)
