Eric Whitacre, Charles Anthony Silvestri, Julie Silvestri - The Sacred Veil
Performed by Academic Choir Aarhus at St. Luke's Church in Aarhus on July 16, 2023.
In July 2023, the Academic Choir Aarhus went on a summer tour to present the Danish premiere of the magnificent piece "The Sacred Veil" from 2019, with music composed by Eric Whitacre. The text of the piece was written by Charles Anthony Silvestri, who lost his wife to cancer in 2005, and it revolves around their life with two children, a cancer diagnosis, and a strong interplay between love and grief. Throughout the composition, the composer and writer also incorporated text from Silvestri's late wife, Julie Silvestri, taken from her online blog during her illness, which adds to the notion that a part of Julie will forever live on in this work.
The musical expression clearly reflects the many diverse emotions present when such a diagnosis strikes a family: fear, sorrow, memories of better times, hope, and despair.
The tour was organized to benefit the Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse) with Academic Choir Aarhus raising around 16,000 DKK through generous donations from the audience.

You all performed absolutely exquisitely. I got chills so many times, this rendition does justice to the original piece.
