Hi Paul. Finally I've had a simple and very useful understanding of these different uses of the expressions. Thanks a lot.
Hi, Paul,
I watched this video 2 times and now I got understand "Used to" and "would". I really like your teaching method and facial expressions. Because of those, I feel like I'm in a classroom. Thank you so much for doing this kind of great work.👍
its "i got understood"
Thank you very much for this very useful video. Excellent examples clarifying the similarities and differences between USED TO AND WOULD.

I like your method of teaching English. May God -The Merciful and The Just- bless all of you
Thank you very much. That's an excellent explanation.
thank you Paul. great videos.
Thank you so much Paul.
Do you have any video related to "states" ? I don't understand when it's possible to use Would . Thanks!
Very useful, I have question I'm learning english my first language is Arabic now why do you use ( would, used to) in English language at same time you can use simple past tense or perfect present tense or continue past tense with regards
I’ve heard that in past we can use “would” like “often” . For example: when I was a child, my dad would take my to his work
Thank you very much for your videos. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from you and I bet, English will never stop surprising me :) It was really surprising for me to read that "didn't use to" and "didn't used to" are absolutely equal in contemporary grammar. I'd like to make it clear for myself (and my students, too :D). So... some questions came to my mind.
1) Are "didn't use to" and "didn't used to" absolutely interchangeable with no differences in meaning?
2) Does "didn't use to" have the meaning that the situation now is 100% per cent different from the past? Like, does the phrase "I didn't use to have short hair" mean that I had long hair before but I have short hair now?
3) Does the phrase "It didn't used to bother me" mean that it has never bothered me and it doesn't bother me now? "didn't used to" seems to be just a short form of "I didn't get used to it (at all)"?
Btw, Grammarly spellchecker still marks "didn't useD to" as a mistake...
Thanks again :)
Thanks a lot for your clear explanation of this confusing theme;)
Excellent explanation!
I didn't used to is strictly ungrammatical, though widely used informally or colloquially.
vk Reuter it is not ungrammatical since it is a codified structure and has nothing to do with formality.
Hi uncle Paul, I am a level 6 student
I like your teaching ❤
Hello Mr Paul .in the second example .the negative sentence . isn't it right to use (didn't use to ) because the verb after didn't is infinitive ?
It's a pretty useful lesson. Thank you!
THANKS YOU HELPED ME FOR MY EXAMS!!! 💝💝
Thank you! You are the best.
Which form (didn't use to or didn't used to ) is accepted by Cambridge examiners? or both?
thank you ,paul.
Sir plz discuss on these topics 'have been used to ',had been used to '
thaaank your explanaition is much better than the one my teacher did
This video is way practical and useful my man. Thanks for your teaching ! :D It must be really helpful !
Great explanation.
"Did you used to~~?" should be "Did you use to ~~?"
Omg, you are right
did you use to.
right..did you use?,...didn't use
actually 'used to' is modal so thats why one cannot use in it 1st form of verb. Though some user use 'did use to'but its wrong or slang. "did i use to.."is informal
Nice information you have given
would you dance when you were young ? (this intterogative is it correct mr) ???
Thanks for the lesson!
cemeterydrive10 you're welcome :) Many more videos to come :)
Thank you so much for this helpful video
Thanks for the lesson! You said nothing about the negative form or a question form of WOULD. Does it mean that it isn't used in negative sentences or questions ? it's just that I've seen some sentences, like, " when I was a kid, I would never sit around doing nothing"
Dear Teacher Paul,Thank you for your useful lesson.I've just subscribed to your channel.
Mamoon KJadallah friend as per as I am concerned, you can't use past perfect tense when you mentioned time like just.
great lesson! Thanks teacher!
thanks a lot mister now i can mange with it, it's amazing
Great class!
Is it correct to use the past form of the verb "use" after "did"?
I used to have problems but my mother would tell me stories about Peter Pan xD
what a childhood
look at this sentence in my grammar book," Note, however, that when "used to" expresses a discontinued habit, it cannot be replaced by "would"
Does "discontinued habit" mean a "state"????
If there was no background noise and presentation was slower it would be great. Thank you for helping me to improve my English.
You are welcome! New videos are going to be in much better quality.
great stuff! thanks a lot!
Great! Thank you.
Hello, Paul!
Can I ask you a question about "used to"?
I'm using FCE-exam books and there is one kind of odd sentence like " I used to live here five years ago". Do you think it is correct?
Thank you beforehand!
Hello there) yes, you can use it like that. So the "living here" was a duration of some sort and 5 years ago, that "Living here" ended. I can even say: I used to work in that office a while ago. No problem, very natural.
Great!! Very clear!
Thanks a million!
I will play right now
or
i would play right now
which one is correct and why ? Please I request you to explain about it
Very clear explanation,I've been strugling for so long time;)
макс езер ‘ I didn’t used to’ is wrong.
amazing lesson
great video.. thank you
Thanks you so much
It's really nice
Hi teacher Paul, when you say "states" you mean stative verbs??
Well explained
Awesome English!
Is it correct to say: I would sit in the park when I was young?
THANK YOU.
Thanks! Hi from London! %)
Sir, I have a doubt, that is; which one is currect? 1. Mumbai board train is about to come. 2. Mumbai bound train is about to come. Please try to tell me about it. I hope you will try to reply as soon as possible. I will be looking forward to your reply.
Why even though you asked a question you kept used to with did.?
Is it supposed to be ''Did you use to..........?" In the negative and question form, "used to" becomes "use to", right????
Thanks :))) from Thailand
brilliant!!
You are perfect!!!!!!!!!
Great!
I lke ur teaching sir
Is that error: "I didn't (used) to have hair" I think if "did" comes into sentences, the verb should be based form.
Because I'm being confused when some native-speaker did mistake in his mother tongue.
Am I right, teacher? if i don't please tell me. And Thanks a lot!
REcon366 the video is correct. There are (in modern day English) two varients: didn't use to & didn't used to. Read the other comments and i refer to contemporary grammar books which support the new form. If you have any other questions, please ask)
This is new for me. You should have explained that in your video.
that was helpful thank you :)
Thank you mr. Paul and I am very sad for you that you lost your hair.
Isbot correct to say as you wrote on the board: I didnt useD... Did you useD to..?
I Thought it wasn't correct to use DID with the verb already in past...
Heloiza Brontë You have spoken out my mild.I think Did+used to is incorrect. It should be Did+use to.....
Heloiza Brontë, didn't use to & didn't useD to are nowadays considered to be accepted forms. If you consult any modern grammar book, you'll be told that. Check Mygrammarlab page 99. Even Michael Swan's Practical English Usage. All English learners grow up knowing just 'didn't use' to but there have been changes in English. I have even seen 'didn't useD to' in the BBC.
Sir, do native speakers use like that.......??
Yes my friend. Many do, It is why "Didn't useD" is mentioned in many modern grammar books as an accepted form nowadays. Many textbooks around the world won't even mention this nuance since it is such a recent development in English. It's like how natives use "was" instead of "were" in subjunctive mood (If the weather WAS nice, we could....). At one time it was considered incorrect but is so widely used that it's now an accepted form. I would love to do an experiment: i would like to go some some schools in the UK and dictate sentences with Used to and didn't use/used to and see what the results are. I am certain they would be very mixed. As for learners, stick with the original. Maybe it was my mistake to introduce such a point so soon in the video.
wow...thank you so much for your replying. I really appreciate it!! Thank you for helping us to improve each day more!!
Thank you
I don't know about Michael Swan, but as a native English speaker I can tell you that in the USA, "I didn't used to..." is incorrect, and english.stackexchange.com agrees:
english.stackexchange.com/questions/30035/i-use-to-or-i-used-to#30137
Hello
Why you write didn't with used to
Maan Al-Abdullah because i used correct English grammar. I'm a native speaker my friend.
+Practice English with Paul Another native English speaker, Michael Swan, the author of "Practical English Usage" by OUP, gives both versions as correct, e.g. "I didn't use(d) to like opera, but now I do." Thomson and Martinet in their "A Practical English Grammar", also by OUP, give only " didn't use to" as a negative formed with "didn't". So, apparently both didn't use and didn't used are correct.
Great job!!!
Saying you're a native speaker does not make that you are correct in this instance. In fact, one might expect a native speaker to not make mistakes when explaining such basic grammar.
When making negatives or questions with "used to", the "d" that indicates the past simple is designated to the auxilliary verb only.
Ergo:
I used to drive a lot.
I didn't use to drive a lot.
Did I use to drive a lot?
+Julie used to is different case, my friend.
nice tips.
tks 4 the video.
peace

so, i can say : " i used to dance a lot when i was young. " And " i would dance a lot when i was young. " ? Both are correct? Thanks!
yes. Both are correct but 'would' gives more of a sense of habit/nostalgia than 'used to'))
Practice English with Paul oh, ok, Paul! thanks!
thank you
He didn't use to ... is correct. The verb is "use" and since the auxiliary "did" requires a plain (infinitive)
you have mistake which is" did you used" to correct it.excluding this that is great.
Fantastic vidio ♥️🌺
I used to have hair.----- means: I do not have hair (now) but I had hair (in the past).
I never used to have hair.-------means: I have always been bald. ( all my live, no hair at all) Best wishes:-)))
Merci.
Don't we use the base form of verbs in questions with "do"? Like 'Did you use to be funny?'
Cheers
omg I'm really confused .used to didn't change negatif and question .
Thank you so much. I have some questions, Are these sentences correct?
●When i was a kid, i used to be a naughty kid, i would be out of home every day.
●Every time i spoke Spanish to Americans, they wouldn't understand me.
Thank you for your answer.
I think there are mistakes ( did you use to have) (theres no ‘d’ if there is did or didn’t)
Yes, that's right! He just might not have noticed that.
Thank u
sorry but when we put used to in a negative form. we put didnot and we release (ed) because didnot is from the oxinary verbs.
Can we say;
I used to go swimming every day.
??
Without mentioning (last week)
Why we wrote didn't for usedto
Have problem in writing. Pleas help
👍
