Because Europe has always had a strong football culture and infrastructure in place, with more investment in the women's game, it hasn't taken long for them to catch up, and possibly overtake the USWNT.
But there is also huge potential in Africa, Asia, and South America.
But, gratitude to the US for raising the level.

Yes Morocco has recently started a women's professional league I think it is two tiered and the girls can make a living from playing leaving them free to concentrate on thier game. The Morroccans were Wafcon finalists. The South Africans are also a gr8 footballing nation and have also invested in thier infra-structure and thier women also play abroad. I suspect they will surpass Nigeria if the Nigerians do not get thier act together.

For 50+ yrs the USWNT had adopted physical superiority over technical ability and had benefited from the privilege of having the infrastructure and league in place when nobody else did ! The gap was closing 5yrs ago with footballing nations but now in 2023 it’s closed! And you already have smaller nations rapidly catching up. My question is “ what is America going to do as they get surpassed by European countries with the same coaching as the men’s teams ?” In 5 yrs the USWNT will be starting to slide down the rankings because their time of dominance is OVER!

The Difference is the Womens team gets World Class Coaches. We had Pia, follwed by Ellis, Sermanni, Ellis Again...Where as the Men team has not had a Top Level Tactics coach. So while the gap is closing, soon as the Federation rights the ship, It's right back to being a Top 3 Contender

@@Artomas22 how do you suggest the federation rights the ship because it’s not an overnight fix , by this I mean if you started teaching skills to a 6yr old today it would be a decade or more before they would be able to play in a national team! Just employing a European coach doesn’t suddenly transfer the knowledge to everyone , that’s why I’m asking how America will solve the problem.

@@barrycarey7521 so, in terms of skill, I think the next generation are getting that. Alyssa Thompson as an example. But yea, in terms of the women's game. American coaches always propelled those with high physical attributes. The change has started but takes time. When thr federation had the DA, they did it with the boys. Focused on developing certain types of players which gives us many who we see today. But on the girls side it's been ignored. That's why the women's youth teams never do well on the world stage.

This is exactly what I'm seeing also. Other countries with a culture that is much more engrained in this sport are now at the point where the talent they are putting on the field has been trained within that culture since they were young girls, much like the men in Europe have that exposure since being young boys. The composure shown by both the Netherlands and Portugal, playing out of tight spaces for example, along with the tactical awareness to minimize the USWNT's strengths was incredibly evident in both of those games. There is a lot being said about "lack of effort" or the team not being focused on winning, but what I'm seeing on the field is clearly a matter of the other teams having players who have been prepared their whole lives in ways that mimic the winning methods among European men's teams, while our USWNT players unfortunately come from developmental systems that don't compare favorably in that regard.

Keep Megan Rapinoe on the bench. In 2 games she proved she does not belong on the pitch.
Sadly no pundit, no commentator or anyone in media have the courage to point out the abysmal performance of Megan Rapinoe. Everyone is afraid to say that this empress has no clothes. The moment you speak out about Megan Rapinoe, you will be labeled a MAGA hat wearer.

We haven't seen the US strengths because they haven't had the ball. The US team as a whole are still the best athletes in the world - with the gap steadily closing - but the are NOT the best soccer players. The only hope to beat Sweden would be changes along the lines of what you all suggested: Go with a 4-4-2 with Morgan as the 10. Move Ertz to the 6, replace her at CB with Cook to play with her old teammate Girma. Replace Sullivan with Sanchez. Ertz and Horan can anchor that midfield and Sanchez brings a little bit of Lavelle's creativity. Morgan at the 10 gives the attacking midfielder which she is already KINDA playing but let's make it official. This might give the US a chance.

Interesting formation I saw Christen press suggesting Dunn move to midfield or centre of the park. You don't need speed so much as intelligence, passing ability and tackling ability. It is a position that does not require pace so much as acceleration. However having said that US need to use thier veterans sparingly especially with officials adding 11 mins and 13mins extra time. Also if any matches finish goal less they will pay extra time before PK's which will be physically demanding.

This means the younger players are running for her, she does not need to over exert herself physically as she would need to if she were to play an out and out striker chasing every ball including the no hopers. She has a history of providing assists, (20) in the London Olympics of 2012 and she has experience of European football playing style having played for Lyon the same club Horan currently plays for. I really think we need to play a 4-4-2 with either a box midfield or a diamond midfield and let the outside backs provide the depth. My preference is a box midfield with two 10's and two 9's. my prefereed 10's are lavell and demelo, but with rose out I would try smith over morgan. Maybe with two 10's morgan or smith could play 10 but in the current construction of only 1 10 it is laughable because we would have fewer passes/playmaking ability than we already have.

Quite right to say the USWNT doesn't dominate the midfield and that is exactly why it does not look likely this USWNT will overcome their upcoming opponent in the quarter final against Sweden.
It the old days, you dominated the midfield by winning every ball, bullied the opponent physically and winning every tackle to overpower the opponent. Yes, you need a strong self-belief in doing this plus a willpower so strong that drives you down the flanks with speed, cut in and sending deadly crosses for your striker to score. You win in arial duals, knocks down defenders, and completely overwhelmed you opponent in the goal mouth. Ball possession, tactics, fluidity, and style of play destroy your opponents' will in defense, struggling to hold the ball, and finally yield to your complete offensive strategy.
Not anymore today with this USWNT of an immature mentality and inexperience game time or knowledge of a competition to win a World Soccer Title - the World Cup! In stark contrast, watch the Japanese playing their group stage games. Watch each game again and observe how they played. Do you find anyone of the players having the quality of the likes of Alex Morgan or Megan Rapinoe? No. Do you see any playmaker in their midfield who dictates play, orchestrates and string pulling in the games? No. Then how on earth did they managed to score 11 goals in three games, and beating a top ranked SPAIN team 4-0, shell shocking them without a hiccup? How will a team, with an average body weight less than 120 lbs, an a body height less than 5'4" beat an African team - Zambia with superior physique, speed, and footballing skills, and put 4 goals pass them? How did they do the same agains a Central American Costa Rica team with excellent experience, tactics and passion by three goals in a breeze? Everything comes down to footballing education. The Japanese team is an average ability team with average skills, average speed, and ordinary tactics. But one thing stands out distinctively: Mentality and discipline. You play under one belief, you are one hundred percent committed, and you adhere to the details and requirements to execute these tactic instructions without fail. You listen to your coach, follow your leader, no personal glory and selfishness, you play as a team, and you never let down your country, your supporters, your family, your community on or off the field. This is an oriental culture of soccer or any sports. This is why the Japanese were successful in Asia, and certainly they are thriving to win this title.
Will the US mentality be able to get out of the group of 16? You bet!

Oh, little one, I know she makes you incel nervous, but it was never focused on her other than she spoke about the need for change and wouldn't put up with people such as you. She's always been a team player, as she's shown both in the run up to this WC and on the Reign. She a lesbian and she's not embarrassed by it. Deal with it or go away.

You do realize she was 37-38 those last two years. She would still come off the bench and score. Every player plays until they are forced to retire and she left it all in the field for club and country unlike some of these ladies. She earned the right to say what ever tf she wants to say, and it needed to be said.
