If you bothered to look at a brief sampling of Ukraine History from the last 100 years, you might notice how much development Russia has invested in Ukraine? You might be surprised at how many Russians actually live in Eastern Ukraine since WW2? If you view history of the region over a few centuries, you begin to notice that Ukraine area has been a victim of many Empires conquest? But when we begin to look at the US desire to weaponize Energy and sell European Consumers LNG at outrageous prices, and the ability of Russia to provide cheap gas to Europe, we might notice an economic trend that might make us question the validity of installing a Puppet Government, and killing Civilians in Donetsk for over 8 years? Facts do matter, the US State Department has used lies like the Domino Theory, Yellow Cake, Iran Contra, or even the word Democracy as if they actually believed in the possibility that those terms were facts? We should understand that since overcoming Spain, and taking a few Colonies from them, we have become pretty good at the Colonial exploitation that the Declaration of Independence protested?
Daniel, perhaps you realize that Russia slaughtered millions of peoples including Ukrainians, which suffered this twice and now a third time. Russia populates other countries with Russians where they've genocidally eradicated the indigenous people. THAT DOES NOT MAKE THAT COUNTRY RUSSIAN. NOR DOES SPEAKING RUSSIAN AS YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE MAKE a person RUSSIAN FIRST. If you disagree, let's agree to disagree.

What was surprising was Julia's estimate that the death/injury casualties on both sides were 100,000+. Any estimates I have seen or heard are nowhere near an equal amount. The ratios I have heard are something like 4 to 1 up to 8 to 1 in Ukraine's favor and against the Russians.

I always enjoyed Al's speaking style in Congressional debates, and had hopes for him as a Senator. But here we are with a US Debt that appears to grow more enormous every day the Government appears to attempt to exploit Russian assets. The US has exploited and overdeveloped the resources that were easily available. I have hauled Mining equipment to Docks so other Nations could be exploited for their easy to dig up Minerals. Estimates for Russian casualties are about 180-200k. Operator Starsky says that they count the dead by drone, and factor in desertions and wounded. Putin sees destroying civilian homes and infrastructure as a means to increase the refugee burden, and probably resentment towards these refugees. Which tragically is happening in my country Ireland, admittedly with a small portion of our society.
in intercepted phonecalls Russian soldiers say that they leave the bodies where they fell, or bury them there, because the higher ups don`t want to pay money to the fallen`s family. As a German, I am really embarassed by the speed with which the decision to send tanks was done. Apparently, to get chancellor Scholz to commit to something or even say something definitive is more difficult than nailing a pudding to the wall. On top of the late decision, the lack of foresight is very appaling. As far as I know, no efforts have been made to ramp up the production of Leopards. This should have happened in the summer or at the latest in fall. Even without the decision or even the intent to send Leopards to Ukraine, it would have been a good idea to stock up, in particular the latest variant of the Leopard, the A7V. Iirc around 3500 Leopards built in total, latest variant A7V in the low hundreds (fun fact: A7V is the official designation of the first German tank ever, back in WW1). In Germany, we have new tank designs coming up, which however will take around another ten years or so until they are ready. For now, the Leopard 2 is still a very good design and likely among the best tanks in the world and available in relatively large numbers (for western tanks) in quite a lot of allied militaries; they would probably able to have more. Hopefully the replacement of the failed former secretary of defense Lamprecht with Pistorius will change the speed with which we in Germany prepare, but I fear the real blocker that needs dislodging is Scholz.
I also heard Germany is causing delays in parts needed from other countries donating Leopards. They need the parts to quickly upgrade their Leopards so they can send them to Ukraine. The best way to help Ukraine is for us citizens in the West to fully support helping them.
@@jimmyhyun8546 Could be part of the reason, but I don't know about this. I follow US news more closely than german news sources, and I have not heard of this one. However, what I heard is that the state of our military is not good, in particular long underfunding has led to low numbers of operational vehicles. In addition, after the fall of the wall, the better deal for us was to have friendly neighbors who we supply with our weaponry. At one point in the 80s we had around 2500 Leopard II ready (iirc), now it is a bit more than one tenth of that. A few of those went back to Rheinmetall, the others were sold to friendly militaries. Those Leopards which are out there exist in a number of variants, A4 (late 80s variant), A5 (turret front uparmored), A6 (longer barreled gun), A7(V) (the latest). So, the situation is definitely complicated and the specifics of the tanks could be a reason Germany was hesitant, but I suspect there are others, like a) the currently ruling party has traditionally strong ties to Russia, b) the optics of german tanks fighting in Ukraine are really bad, and/or c) we are even now not mentally ready to take the lead in Geopolitics. There are other reasons as well ...
"Who the f--k knows." and "I love a good tank." Can't get enough of Julia. Also, the NYT Daily podcast episode is "Scenes from a Russian Draft Office" which paints a remarkable portrait of life in Russia late in 2022.
"Time and bodies.." There's a contradiction there. Russia is wasting their force, not building it up for a long war. They sent trainers into battle. They exhibit an ingrained contempt for human lives, including their own, and for human factors in war.
That same contempt for human life is part of why the Soviet Union ended. There is a fascinating account of this in the book "Ecocide in the USSR" by Murray Fessbach.
Julia is absolutely right at about 33:00 that far right sympathies for Russia stem from the christian orthodox yearning for a christo-fascist government. There was a retired US colonel who said that quiet part out loud, "he (Putin) has similar christian values, he does not cow-tow to the LGBT causes" etc or words very close to that effect.
I couldn't agree with Julia more. I have been frustrated by the creeping response by the allies. Lives have been lost unnecessarily by political wrangling . Germany could have waivered the restrictions imposed by them to countries that have purchased the Leopard 2 . Its like they were afraid of violating the Ribbentrop agreement again. They still want to cling to the illusion of a unrestricted Nord Stream pipeline that will never pose a threat .
Great interview. My father's father's family where Germans from Lithuania, East Prussians who found themselves on the Russian side of the border after the Napoleonic Wars. Family rumor has it that the reason my great grandfather came to the USA was to avoid conscription into the Czarist Russian Army, in the late 1800s. Looks like things in Russia are not that different in a century and a quarter.
Sounds like a branch of my family. My grandfather left Prussia just before the Franco-Prussian War to live with relatives in the USA. He lived in Westphalia which was an independent Catholic bishopric prior to the Napoleonic War and was geographically, linguistically and culturally closer to Netherlands. And then with Napoleon, that region was annexed to France (they were briefly involuntary French citizens). France lost, Prussia switched sides to join Britain and got the lion's share of northern Germany including my ancestral home as a result of the Congress of Vienna. Update a few generations later, my teenage grandfather was ready for conscription and left his home and the future unified Germany forever.
The only difference is the conscription army service was for 25 years at that time. Parents organized funerals for conscripted sons since they would rarely return. Crazy to think of these days.
Al, you should amend your script to say, "not one active American military member" has been killed in Ukraine. There have been several American military veterans (and others) who have been injured, captured, or killed trying to help the Ukrainians.

I have been watching a lot of European coverage and the prevailing opinion is that there were several years of threatening - but when Putin invaded Crimea and nothing was done - remember he never admitted there were Russian troops in Crimea - even after he signed a treaty - he still would not admit they were his troops . But the EU view was when he was not stood up to then it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to do something like this to Ukraine . Personally, I have never understood this - Russia seems much better at hybrid warfare - massive disinformation campaigns - than a shooting war - they were more effective for a lot less . At the same time tyrants have to tyranny

I have listened to Ms. Loffe's interviews from 1 year ago and 4 months ago (?) On PBS News. Riviting. Thanks for having her. I'm anxious to hear her evolving insight to Putin, Russia and the genocidal barbaric war they have brought down on Ukraine. God bless you both 🙂❤️🔥
If you bothered to look at a brief sampling of Ukraine History from the last 100 years, you might notice how much development Russia has invested in Ukraine?
It’s amazing how much knowledge Julia has with the current situation. She’s sharp as a tack!
I really enjoyed this podcast. Both Al and Julia both have relevant insights that are quite thought provoking. I also love the way that Julia calls out (friendly enough) Al and doesn't let him "miss" things that he has just said!! Hilarious. I really like both characters. Very informative.
@@coreyham3753 she was including civilian deaths in the Ukrainian numbers. Those 4 to 1 or 8 to 1 stats are strictly about military losses.
@@stevehatcher7700 OK, thanks for the information.

Can't get enough of Julia. She is the only analyst who gives us an insight into the Russians psyche. She tells it like it is and intelligently funny.

I think she has a pretty good window into the American psyche. She has the number on the Trumpers. They want to ally with Putin in his war on wokism.

Everything you just said is 90% incorrect. Latest studies, non Russian, showing 20K Russians deaths
Look up Mongol tactics and you should see the similarities!
in intercepted phonecalls Russian soldiers say that they leave the bodies where they fell, or bury them there, because the higher ups don`t want to pay money to the fallen`s family. Thank you, Mr. Al Franken, for having Julia Ioffe; a phenomenal journalist who has been an exemplary author on fascism and authoritarianism. We do have to fight like Ukraine💛💙 for our Democracy - Western flank. Feb 2023.
I’ve a feeling this warlord won’t die an old man in his own bed.
Don't understand NATO has been around since WWII. Do we honor our treaties or not?
I couldn't agree with Julia more. I have been frustrated by the creeping response by the allies. Lives have been lost unnecessarily by political wrangling . Germany could have waivered the restrictions imposed by them to countries that have purchased the Leopard 2 . Its like they were afraid of violating the Ribbentrop agreement again. They still want to cling to the illusion of a unrestricted Nord Stream pipeline that will never pose a threat .
Great show! Thanks.
Great discussion I wish it was longer
FRONTLINE (PBS) did a terrific interview with Julia Ioffe that is well worth hearing.
@@larryhovekamp4318 I have been to Meunster many times. My favorite city in Northwestern Germany.
The only difference is the conscription army service was for 25 years at that time. Parents organized funerals for conscripted sons since they would rarely return. Crazy to think of these days.

I don't know where you live, but his disinformation here in the states has really screwed us. Ironic that Brexit happened the same election yr as us.
