The part where Mariah looks at Whitney and stays silent on her part was ment like that. They did it on Oprah as well, It's like Mariah giving the mic to Whitney as she goes into that powerful "A small but stil resilient voice" and merch on the climax. I think it's a nice little sign of respect from Mariah giving credit to the master of all voices. Like she wrote in a memoir, something in the style of "I was interested in the music production and creation side, Whitney was a natural superstar born to sing"
i think he just went "oh" at that because the camera cut to mariah when she wasnt the one singing at that part, its always nippy doing the "RESILIENT VOOOICCEEEE" but them oscar editors (like most pro footage editors) aint never get the right shots for whatever reason

Her musicality and her artistry were so great, she transcended the many limitations that could have made it virtually impossible for anyone to articulate a solution that made sense enough for respected musicians in the realm of classical music to translate and adhere to. Not even the conductor could do his job in that moment. In that instance she outclassed a conductor. That only goes to show how great Whitney was and is.
I read something about that too. At the Oscars they're supposed to sing the movie version, which was sung by Michelle Pfeiffer (who was in the movie) and someone else. It is different to the W/M version. That's likely what the musical director had prepped for. In the end they went for a hybrid. Also, a theory for the look Mariah thru: Whitney didn't sing "...clear through the rain", leaving Mariah unexpectedly on her own for that part. Whitney was likely gearing up for the next verse, the second part of which she needs to belt because it's designed for her to have on her own: "a small but still, RESILIENT VOICE..." and it's during "resilient voice" that Mariah gives the side eye slightly gritted smile lol

I think Mariah's smile there was because of the harmony part, she was surprised, I guess? She was supposed to be the higher harmony in that particular part, but whitney sang it, so she smiled and she did the lower harmony instead.
Whitney's power is out of this world! Honestly tho, Mariah's part is the hardest part of the song. I mean, try to watch some covers, only few slayed Mariah's part.
Besides the obvious quality of the vocals, there are so many golden moments in this song. I've always loved Mariah's very interesting harmony in the beginning of the bridge, starting out low and going up there the sentence after. Whitney's melisma like a machine gun, Mariah's like a river.
Mariah seemed a tad bit nervous. It also sounded like her mic was low. I actually prefer the Oprah performance over this one. They both shined in that one. My 2 favs😍
People give Mariah a lot of slack on this performance and I just dont get it. She was giving transitions, runs ,head voice and belts! Her mic was definitely lowerd to harmonize better you can tell audibly that their mics dont have the same volume. (Especially with both their growls) She did amazing! @@TheeeDanielR Whitney is loud for the microphone, technically Whitney in this performance is not even singing, she simplified the arrangement and she is using her talk singing and sounds extremely loud because of her microphone, even too loud honestly, It's not pleasant at all to me, while Mariah performed the original arrangement which is more complex anyway even though her microphone is almost turned off. 99 was a good year for Whitney vocally, for Mariah was the worst of the 90s. She perform live the most complex and impressive vocals that I have ever seen in her prime. She's litterally the only live vocalist who can't be touched, just see the covers of her songs, her prime is just unmatched. Lmao I think Mariah gave Whitney a few "odd" looks because Whitney was changing the harmony up a little and she had to think fast to play along. Although I did notice a moment in the Oprah performance where it looked like Mariah snatched her hand back after they were holding for awhile so she could get back to her hand business xD Regardless, they sat next to each other during the rest of the ceremony!
The way Whitney enunciates. Absolutely beautiful! Great performance and both did an excellent job. However I think that look might have revealed what you mentioned earlier: Whitney for a split second sang Mariah’s note which through her off somewhat and what followed was that big climax and we all heard the voice there. But the contrast in styles is still beautiful to hear and watch.
Mariah Carey was definetly affected by nerves that night due to people commenting on her weight gain + she always hated award show performances. Their Oprah performance is where Mariahs voice shined the best and hit better notes and it was more resonant, prolly cuz her mic volume was different or she felt more comfortable since it’s not an award show. Whitney came up with the arrangement for this performance, because the conductor couldn't figure out the chords. Whitney stepped in during rehearsal the night before and figured out the chords the conductor couldn't figure out. Whitney knew music and had a hell of an ear. My favorite part is Whitney's note on the drum beat that reverberates through the hall toward the end. She took over the performance. Love it.
Whitney made her own arrangements for every one of live performances, especially as years went on and her mental health was declining. It has been noted that live musicians would dread doing live performances with her, as she was extremely unpredictable - however that also displays great musicianship on their end to keep up with her melodies. For the purpose of a duet, I wish Whitney just stuck to the script here the same way Mariah did, that's my personal opinion. Still a beautiful and legendary performance.

Mariah has always tended to sing like the recording. Whitney rarely does. That is a given. Whitney has and will always be my favourite singer of all time. Her innate gospel sound, her tone, her ability to imbue lyrics with so much feeling and most importantly the effortless way she sings is iconic. Love love love that women. But Mariah is a supreme talent. Vocally she is superb. But musically she is so talented. She writes and produces music. She is a master of her craft. The world has truly been blessed to have this witnessed this performance.......and finally how beautiful did they both look. They’re my all-time favorites. I remember, in fifth grade, sitting in front of the computer and just playing Whitney’s songs non-stop. She was also the reason I got to know Mariah. I love and miss her.
You hit it on the head with their tones and textures....Mariah's voice is higher and lighter and so in that belting moment you are always gonna hear the lower voice. (Whitney) But it's like I don't know anyone 2 people that were absolutely perfectly chosen for this song. They both combined their superpowers beautifully.
Whitney is THE VOICE for many reasons. She dominates live performances because of power, tone, charisma and agility. Mariah's element is the studio, that is where she thrives. Outside of Whitney, Mariah is my next best female vocalist. They are just everything to me.
I don't think you will ever get another female duet better than this. Their voices marry so well together and Mariah's head voice is absolutely heavenly while Whitney's tone has so much richness and warmth to it.

mariah's voice was especially silky here, love that. also, as celebrated as this moment was back in the day, i think it's supremely underrated by the younger generations. i don't think people realize how legendary this duet was, most people who consider themselves vocalists now, 100% took some inspiration from one or the other (or both). they're both titans in very different ways, sadly mariah's nerves and stage fright never really allowed her to showcase her maximum potential on a live setting and this was no exception, so as much I love her I do think Whitney ate this performance up lol.

Why is the greatest live singer ever to me because the song usually given to her and with that gospel background sung the song how she feel, that’s why Whitney had like 5-6 version of one songs and you couldn’t get the full experience on a studio track with her simply with her voice being to big for the studio. On the other hand mariah to me is the greatest studio artist of all time because she usually wrote, produced and back her vocals. That’s why if you listen to Mariah live vocals(which are all time great as well) she didn’t really change keys and pretty much always sung out she wrote and sung the song in the studio. Not saying Mariah didn’t care about singing but she the artist more than Whitney and Whitney the Sanger more so than Mariah…both equally great

Mariah had a later onset in the climax and its her you hear towards the middle and end of the noes un the climax. She kinda sat back and let Whitney have the lead between the two but but Mariah definitely can be heard and the crowd really didn't start cheering until the end of Mariahs run.
It was obvious that Mariah's mic was lower than whitney's you don´t need to be that smart to notice it. If Mariah was screaming and you couldn´t hear it, something is wrong, period. The performance was great, but I think Mariah is always too respectful of other artists and never really uses all she can when performing with other legendary singers. It is very common to mess it up when it is live. Each mic, captures each voice, differently. If you watch Mariah's live performance IF IT IS OVER, singing with an orchestra you can tell that when the mic is right you can hear it all. If you can´t hear the artist, something is wrong. That is the whole point of a soundcheck. Regardless of who is more powerful, the soundcheck should make the mics capture the sound in a way it should make both voices be heard. If Mariah is screaming and you can´t hear it, something is wrong. It isn´t a matter of power, it is a matter of sound engineering.

The musical director had in mind for the two to sing the song differently from the recording. If someone has the source to help me prove this claim please feel free to post the link under this comment thread. Whitney showed up and couldn’t stay during the rehearsals. Mariah was present. During the bridge you see them singing the same line in the same key and pitch. 2:47 I always thought that was Whitney throwing shade for some reason lol. But no that was Nip signifying that she made an “oops” moment. And Mariah, who was at rehearsal, recognizes that as well hence her reaction to Whitney. Also Whitney naturally began to Adlib her performance and I don’t think it was her intention to outsang Mariah. She didn’t really align her voice with Mariah to harmonize the song how it originally intended to be done at least. So Mariah is following rehearsals, and Whitney who was either late or missed rehearsals, Whitney-fied the performance. They are both professionals who handled the performance very well, just a few hiccups came about because they’ve never really had the time to practice hence the inconsistency on Nips part to show up for rehearsals. Her musicality and her artistry were so great, she transcended the many limitations that could have made it virtually impossible for anyone to articulate a solution that made sense enough for respected musicians in the realm of classical music to translate and adhere to. Not even the conductor could do his job in that moment. In that instance she outclassed a conductor. That only goes to show how great Whitney was and is.
I read something about that too. At the Oscars they're supposed to sing the movie version, which was sung by Michelle Pfeiffer (who was in the movie) and someone else. It is different to the W/M version. That's likely what the musical director had prepped for. In the end they went for a hybrid.
Also, a theory for the look Mariah thru: Whitney didn't sing "...clear through the rain", leaving Mariah unexpectedly on her own for that part. Whitney was likely gearing up for the next verse, the second part of which she needs to belt because it's designed for her to have on her own: "a small but still, RESILIENT VOICE..." and it's during "resilient voice" that Mariah gives the side eye slightly gritted smile lol

Besides the obvious quality of the vocals, there are so many golden moments in this song. I've always loved Mariah's very interesting harmony in the beginning of the bridge, starting out low and going up there the sentence after. Whitney's melisma like a machine gun, Mariah's like a river.
Mariah seemed a tad bit nervous. It also sounded like her mic was low. I actually prefer the Oprah performance over this one. They both shined in that one. My 2 favs😍

She perform live the most complex and impressive vocals that I have ever seen in her prime. She's litterally the only live vocalist who can't be touched, just see the covers of her songs, her prime is just unmatched. Whitney is still my fave because thanks to her church experience was a more natural performer. This is Mariah's vocal decline, Whitney's voice was in great shape in 99, but anyway Mariah still followed the arrangement of the studio version while Whitney didn't, in this performance Whitney is more a studio singer than Mariah even if she's louder. In reality Mariah has always tried to sing her own songs following the same arrangement of the studio version in her prime while Whitney has always changed the arrangement in her career and often this made the song more interesting to listen to but also easier to sing. However I think that look might have revealed what you mentioned earlier: Whitney for a split second sang Mariah’s note which through her off somewhat and what followed was that big climax and we all heard the voice there. But the contrast in styles is still beautiful to hear and watch.
Mariah Carey was definetly affected by nerves that night due to people commenting on her weight gain + she always hated award show performances. Their Oprah performance is where Mariahs voice shined the best and hit better notes and it was more resonant, prolly cuz her mic volume was different or she felt more comfortable since it’s not an award show. Regardless of that they both sounded amazing & they both had their moments in this performance and the Oprah one!

Whitney came up with the arrangement for this performance, because the conductor couldn't figure out the chords. Whitney stepped in during rehearsal the night before and figured out the chords the conductor couldn't figure out. Whitney knew music and had a hell of an ear. My favorite part is Whitney's note on the drum beat that reverberates through the hall toward the end. She took over the performance. Love it.
Whitney made her own arrangements for every one of live performances, especially as years went on and her mental health was declining. It has been noted that live musicians would dread doing live performances with her, as she was extremely unpredictable - however that also displays great musicianship on their end to keep up with her melodies. For the purpose of a duet, I wish Whitney just stuck to the script here the same way Mariah did, that's my personal opinion. Still a beautiful and legendary performance.

This duet was nothing short of magical. Whitney has often been credited for being the more powerful and dominant in this performance, but I feel they complimented each other perfectly. Mariah has always tended to sing like the recording. Whitney rarely does. That is a given. Whitney has and will always be my favourite singer of all time. Her innate gospel sound, her tone, her ability to imbue lyrics with so much feeling and most importantly the effortless way she sings is iconic. Love love love that women. But Mariah is a supreme talent. Vocally she is superb. But musically she is so talented. She writes and produces music. She is a master of her craft. The world has truly been blessed to have this witnessed this performance.......and finally how beautiful did they both look. mariah's voice was especially silky here, love that. also, as celebrated as this moment was back in the day, i think it's supremely underrated by the younger generations. i don't think people realize how legendary this duet was, most people who consider themselves vocalists now, 100% took some inspiration from one or the other (or both). they're both titans in very different ways, sadly mariah's nerves and stage fright never really allowed her to showcase her maximum potential on a live setting and this was no exception, so as much I love her I do think Whitney ate this performance up lol.

There was never an article about her mic volume. This performance is 22 years and you guys have been mentioning this article which only lambs have? Why lie? it is desperate. Mariah voice was never as powerful as Whitney’s even Mariah said it and it is not an imaginary quote. “ her mid range is so powerful . Mine is more airy” -Mariah. That is real. I do not know any single performance in Mariahs 31 years legendary career where she cut through an orchestra snd a loud ass choir. Correct me I dare you. Whitney has plenty performances where she is drowning out an orchestra. So why did you expect Mariah to be heard? You bring up Oprah? Oprah was in a small studio with a small band. Whitney did not need to employ a Spinto technique there as it would be out of place and too loud. At the Oscars she has the bigger voice and she knows that if she does not unleash it to cut through the orchestration and choir the bridge would be subpar. Mariahs voice as a light lyric or full lyric is meant to blend with the orchestration not float above it. I really do not know what you guys expected but this is exactly the anatomy of their voices. I think the concentration on the bridge diminishes the beauty of Mariahs voice in this performance. Her clarity and tone was not as good as this post 97 but somehow she generated such clarity in this performance that it should be praised. The Oprah performance she is raspy and flat in a few places but because of the ego of Lambs they can not appreciate a superior vocal from Mariah . Her vocal here is superior and more fluid than Oprah. Her mic was fine. It would be funny if Whitney’s fans also say her mic was turned down at Oprah? Don’t you think? Why is the greatest live singer ever to me because the song usually given to her and with that gospel background sung the song how she feel, that’s why Whitney had like 5-6 version of one songs and you couldn’t get the full experience on a studio track with her simply with her voice being to big for the studio. On the other hand mariah to me is the greatest studio artist of all time because she usually wrote, produced and back her vocals. That’s why if you listen to Mariah live vocals(which are all time great as well) she didn’t really change keys and pretty much always sung out she wrote and sung the song in the studio. Not saying Mariah didn’t care about singing but she the artist more than Whitney and Whitney the Sanger more so than Mariah…both equally great

Mariah had a later onset in the climax and its her you hear towards the middle and end of the noes un the climax. She kinda sat back and let Whitney have the lead between the two but but Mariah definitely can be heard and the crowd really didn't start cheering until the end of Mariahs run.

It was obvious that Mariah's mic was lower than whitney's you don´t need to be that smart to notice it. If Mariah was screaming and you couldn´t hear it, something is wrong, period. The performance was great, but I think Mariah is always too respectful of other artists and never really uses all she can when performing with other legendary singers. She could have given whitney a very hard time, but she was chillin'; It just amazes me how at the oscars one could mess up Mariah's mic, it was clearly lower than Whitney's. Pretty easy to tell.

If you had any musical education you will know that bigger voices like Whitney drowned out orchestration on multiple occasions and Whitney always went to another place volume wise when singing with an orchestra as opposed to a small band . Mariah in 31 years of her legendary career has yet to cut through an orchestra. Her voice type blends in.. The through anatomy of their voices was on display here. Whitney is utilising a Spinto technique to drown out the orchestration and loud choir. Mariah has never had that volume capability . It is very common to mess it up when it is live. Each mic, captures each voice, differently. If you watch Mariah's live performance IF IT IS OVER, singing with an orchestra you can tell that when the mic is right you can hear it all. If you can´t hear the artist, something is wrong. That is the whole point of a soundcheck. Regardless of who is more powerful, the soundcheck should make the mics capture the sound in a way it should make both voices be heard. If Mariah is screaming and you can´t hear it, something is wrong. It isn´t a matter of power, it is a matter of sound engineering.

The way Mariah will sound. Patti would float over the orchestration, Mariah will blend in. Singers do not sound the same way because of a mic. Further I have seen performances where a classical trained singer is standing 10 meters away from the mic and a pop singer on the mic and the classical is drowning out the pop singer still. If engineering was all that mattered there would be no need for the singer to be 10 meters away. Patti sings with multiple singers and drowns them out. They are all 🎤 and engineered. Your explanation does not cut it. Sorry
lastly I never said Whitneys voice was stronger than an orchestra, she is using a mic but also the orchestra is using a mic to push their sound. As I do not speak without proof.look at this performance. The whole orchestral section there is micked up just like her. But she is totally drowning their sound out with her big belt moments throughout out the song. no matter how amplified Mariah is , she has never sounded like this singing with orchestration .NEVER. One moment in time at the grammies in 1989 is another example of how a big sound with orchestration sounds. you can actually pick up the metal in her belts. I have nothing is another one in 93, when she belts out the big E5 stay in MY arms. the MY note drowns out the orchestration...Mariah whilst excellent does not generate that kind of volume on her belts with all the engineering in the world
