@ I hear you and I get it. I certainly wouldn’t knock anyone that has JB as the best ever. He certainly is worthy candidate. You are right about Jim and his efficiency.
But that’s where numbers along with the eye test come in. Jim had the benefit of a better O line than Barry ever had. That is what separates Barry for me. To do what he did with that pathetic O-line was phenomenal. Too many times the defense has already penetrated as the ball is handed to him so that’s mostly responsible for his negative yards. He had to make something out of nothing. Barry HAD to overcome his O-line AND the defense lol. I don’t think any other back could accomplish what Barry did with those odds hence my ranking him so high. Plus the eye test is over the top a la Michael Jordan etc.
I always wondered what Barry’s numbers would have been with Emmitt’s O-line😳 were you not touched until after 5+ yards consistently. Shudders.
My take is No disrespect to all time great legends like Jim B, Eric Dickerson, Payton, Smith etc. just looking at the whole picture with context and not just numbers. 👍

An unmentioned reason of why barry sanders retired was the change in coaching philosophy with the incoming Bobby Ross as head coach. Barry had thrived in a spread offense, but Ross ran a power run game, I-formation, between the tackles style of offense, like he ran with RB Natrone Means in San Diego. Sanders was aging, and was going to be asked to do some painful battering ram running style which didn't fit him as well and which had a greater chance of injuring an older running back. So I understand him retiring. It's better to walk away from football while one can still walk.

Y'all got a modern day barry right now with Saquon. Well....barry played in the modern day as well...but you know what I mean lol. But Saquon got the footwork and dance-ability of barry and yet can still run power like emmit and marshawn. Saquon is the whole package and because he can catch. Saquon is the one extra piece that puts y'all over the top...in the same way that the warriors did when they added durant. The crazy part is that he hasn't even reached his peak yet with the eagles. As he gets more comfortable and fluent with the offense I can see him running for 300 yards in the next couple of weeks.

One thing that I respected about this man the most isn’t just because he’s easily the greatest RB of all time. It was the way he went about doing his thang(yes THANG, not thing lol), and the humility he represented behind it. When I used to play football, I tried my best to emulate not just his style of play, but the even temperament to match. And to be honest, we’ll never see another player like him again EVER. I can put Steph Curry in the category with him also because they both allowed their games to speak for them, especially Barry. But that just emphasizes more of the enigma of who Barry was on/off the field. Truly a class act!!
