The problem started to occur in around 3 month once every 2-3 days but happening practically every day now. When it occurs, you’d need to apply a significant effort to close the door.
Smooth Wave BMO840 model
Solved: I looked and looked for a solution so I finally decided to just lube the 2 latches and it's been weeks now and the problem hasn't resurfaced. I poured a little olive oil on a paper towel and then rub the soaked part of the paper towel onto the two latches. I then closed and opened the door a few times, and then wiped off the excess. I didn't want to risk getting oil all over the inside of the machine. There might be a food-safe specialty lube out there - I'll look if the problem comes back but at this point I was just so frustrated that I'm happy to have the shut smoothly again.
I just tried this solution and it did solve mine. You could hear that it was binding on the plastic closing parts. I used a little olive oil spray right into the latch parts, opened and closed it 10+ times, and it's quiet and smooth again.
I’ll try this tomorrow. I really love this microwave but man is giving me some problems.
Tried this but no luck. Thanks for the tip though
Thank you! We just tried it right now and used canola oil spray and that works!
Same problem. Lubricating/spraying door prongs/latches with olive oil eased, but not fully corrected the problem (the top prong moves up and down - spring loaded). Flicking the door closed gently activates the soft close. Lifting the door gently as you close and latch the door so that the top of the door is flush with the enclosure worked for me as well (door is slightly - about a millimeter - miss-aligned - door is about a millimeter lower than the enclosure). I have a trouble ticket in with Breville as this appliance is less than a month old!
Mine is two years old and started doing this several month is ago. Called Breville and they only offered to have it sent to them with a $150 service call. Declined this offer and will just have to live with it. Too bad it was a nice feature.
This worked for our machine. We had to push a bit more on the bottom, but, once it closed, it seems to be fine. We will see if this is a one-off or a recurring issue.
I had the exact same problem with mine, sage sent me a complete new unit. I hope this is fixed in the new model and wont start again after some months
It works for my case. Thanks!
Nice, this was helpful thanks!
Add a description of exactly what you are doing that corrects the problem please
Mine had the same issue. And then today, it started tripping the circuit breaker. Meanwhile, my 20 year old Samsung that I paid $90 for continues to work perfectly.
Hello, mine is now tripping the circuit breaker. What was your fix if u don’t mind me asking
Maybe the soft close feature requires the electronics to be awake to do it. Try pushing a button to wake the electronics and see if the door works correctly once the screen is on?
Looks like that might be the case! I don't think you would always want it on just so that the door will close on demand and unexpected since the door closing seems to be motorized.
I just bought the same microwave. I like it except that I have this same problem with the door. We’re you able to get it fixed?
Nope. I got mine replaced eventually. The new one is starting doing same! Looks like there’s possibly a design flaw unfortunately.
@@mbikov Same here! The need to force the door cannot be good. One remedy, most of the time, but not all, is to start the microwave for a second or so BEFORE placing the food in it. Then.open the door and place the food it. Most of the time, the door will then close smoothly.
@@jamesbarter526 Probably coincidence :-) I believe the issue is purely mechanical and does not depend on the electronics. What a shame. Breville should recall all the microwaves of the series with this ‘smooth’ feature and fix them.
We sprayed canola oil on the hinges, and that worked perfectly.
@@josharango7004didn’t work for me
Did anyone figure out how to do the repair by himself? It looks like the second/lower door catcher on the microwave housing gets stuck. I just touch the moving plastic part with my finger and soft close mechanism is again working fine. It only happens when the microwave door is closed for some time.
Do you still own the Breville?
Mine did not work as easily as the video indicates. Actually I simply guarded the top so that the top and the bottom closed at the same time making sure the seam at the top was flush. This seems to occur once or twice a month. Don’t know why
Have exactly the same problem. If anyone works out a fix that would be great…
That didn't work for me
Still an issue with new models?
Yea we just bought ours a week ago and the close door issue already started just giving us issues.
mine wont smooth close, pile of shite
