    Good video. Just a little note. The 6300 at least (and I think others) do have a "lut" preview when shooting in log picture profiles. I am calling it a "lut" because you can't, as far as I know, upload your own. But it comes with a set of log to rec709 modes that only affect what you see on screen

    If you shoot in 120fps or any other variable frame rate other than 24,30,60 you have to use manual focus right? Also what did you think of the autofocus for filming oneself if you are a one man show. Can you also compare to the a6500.

    For V-Log L, highlight will clip at 80% and Shadow at 20%, that is how log gamma compress the image to get more DR. Same for Zebra you need to set at 80%

    great video.... a question for you.... why did you choose the metabones speedbooster XL adapter over Ultra? you are using an APS-C sigma lens. wouldn't it be better for u to use Ultra version instead? the reason why I'm asking is that I also am thinking of getting metabones speedbooster for my Panasonic camera with the same Sigma lens as your but still not concluded if I should get the ultra or XL version since this particilar sigma lens is not a full-frame lens.. would be nice to know what do you think? Cheers..☺

    Hey, man! Nice footage. You guys make the camera look amazing! I have a few questions, 1: What picture profile are you using in camera? I see your color grade info in the description but are you using log? 2: Are you experiencing any vignette at 18mm or has metabones fixed that issue? I notice that the Sigma 18-35 is used by a lot of test footage providers but the metabones XL .64 was said to have some issues with APSC lenses when at their widest. I ask because of 3:44 - Not sure if that was some sort of protective gear or the issue I am inquiring about. Thanks!

    Can you tell me more about converting to ProRes. Do you do this in Media Encoder? What are the benefits of encoding, as you mentioned you should be doing this anyways. After you convert to ProRes do you keep your original footage, doubling up on HD space? Thank you, great video.

  • @biscuitsalive
    @biscuitsalive 7 років тому

    Great vid.
    So is 180fps about same quality as gh4 96fps?
    And 120fps being like gh4 60fps maybe?
    Also have heard about moire issues.
    Even at 4K 25p. Noticed this? Is it more prone to moire compared to gh4?
    (Due to scaling on new sensor as appears to the pixel by pixe 4k on gh4)
    Lastly, I'm still waiting for a direct side by side , gh4 gh5 ISO test to really show improvements.
    Few peep have kind of done it. But not in great conditions. :)

  • @JamesDailyTV

    I noticed a little vignetting at about 3:47, I'm assuming due to IS and the metabones setup.. does that seem to be a common problem?

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 років тому

      I think its actually the ND filter/Black Satin I had on there but it could also be the metabones. I noticed it when theres a lot of side to side movement and the IS has to work harder

    • @MartinTenghagen
      @MartinTenghagen 7 років тому

      I think the metabones setup should produce no vignette if full frame canon lens is used. In this case sigma 18-35 perhaps was used and thats aps-c and wide.

  • @Shayler78

    Great images, Matti. How do you get your slow motion footage looking so smooth? I live in UK so have to use PAL system frequency , which has limited codec options - doesn't even have 24fps, only 25fps. Also, I have to use 100fps variable frame rate with 360 shutter speed, or else I get black lines moving up screen if I try to use any other variable frame rate than 100fps. When Import 100fps footage onto a 25p timeline in final cut pro and slow footage by 50 % it is not smooth. What am I doing incorrectly? Thanks

    Can you do a more detailed comparison to the Olympus EM1 MII since you have now worked with both cameras? And I believe the stabilization works even better with the original kit lens. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 років тому

      I'll see if I can do that! but basically EM1 more stabilized but more wobble. If you dont shoot wide then your golden on the EM1. Otherwise I like the GH5 a bit better since there isnt as much wobble

    So hey I think the camera is the best at video for the money, no question, but how does it perform in the stills area? I also work a lot with photography and sometimes on remote locations so I need to carry only the minimal equipment, my current stills camera is a 5D Mark II, do you know how it compares in this realm? I know it has a little lower megapixel count but need to know a real opinion. Cheers!

  • @HierFilms

    So, I'm purchasing this same setup here, but I'm reading mixed reviews on which Metabones Adapter works best for GH5 and the Sigma EF 18-35mm lens to avoid vignetting? You've got the (XL 0.64x) linked in the description, but in the comments, you mentioned that you have a previous version of the Metabone and not the XL? Can someone verify if the XL works with no problems of zooming or vignetting now? Thanks ahead of time.

    Hi there, very nice video, I have a few questions, That metabones that you use in this video is only for full frame lenses or can be used with APS canon lenses? and about that lens that you used in this video the Sigma 18-35, did you have some problems with the focus? I was reading that this lens have some issues and you need the USB dock. I know that you make this video with a coolder enviroment, but do you know about heating issues with the GH5? I'm thinking to use for videos in the Huasteca Potosina and here is like 35 to 42 °C. Thanks for this review and congratulations for you work.

    Great review! I have the same setup with the older speedbooster and the sigma 18-35 lens. When turning the camera on it asks at what focal length it should be. I always put it on 25 mm. At what setting do you use it? And the stabilization will only work properly while fully zoomed in. Do you have a work around to quickly switch the setting so it works while shooting wide?

    Hey great videos !!!
    I have one question, I own a GH4 with speedbooster 0.71 Ultra & Sigma 17-50mm 2.8. This is a great set up, no vignetting etc. But I would like to buy the new GH5, I just don't know if it will work with the speedbooster 0.71 and the sigma lens 17-50mm (vignetting - freezing issues etc) ? What do you think about that, and is it worth it to upgrade GH4 to GH5 in your opinion ?

    Great info on the camera (which I've been using for a month) but also a really great editing cadence here. Thank you for sharing.

    Did you have any problems with the metabones and the sigma 18-35 together on the Gh5? I have heard of a few reviews talking about the camera freezing up when zooming in past 18 or 19. Also is there a lot of vignette when you are out at 18? I'm assuming it's pretty much gone by the time you hit 20.
    Great video though!

      Not much problems for me! A little bit of vignetting but not a big deal really.

    I've never used lumix cameras before, I've been a sony shooter. How do these cameras (the GH5) do with over heating? I'm thinking of making the jump mainly because of this issue with the sonys. Thanks. Great review!

    Hey Matt, what LUT do you use on the LUT monitor? Is it intended to be the final graded LUT or like a log to rec.709?

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 років тому +1

      I usually use a LUT thats a bit more cinematic then just 709 and with a bit less contrast. But thats just me!

    I may have to rent one to see how I like it. If I do, I may sell my 5DmkIII to get one. Not sure how I feel about losing full frame though.

    Hi i went to camera store yesterday about to buy sony a6500. Then the person told me to check out olympus em1 mark 2 or the gh5? I just use it for hobby. I use it for hobby and travel. I like to take video and take pictures of my trip.previosuly i used gimbal and gopro for video and rx100 for photo. I think sony is great, great af and good picture and low light. But no flip screen, sucks without gimbal and overheating issue. Gh5 seems to be the best out of all but maybe is better for people that use the camera for work related with all the function. Im leaning toward olympus with its great picture and great video ibis, im just not sure with the low light and the slow motion capabilities. which camera do u think i should get? Sony, olympus or panasonic? Great review btw cheers

    It's unfortunate to see so many video reviews like this one that do not address the audio performance of recorders. So......how well does the GH5 perform from an audio standpoint?

  • @NickMacArthur

    My IBIS “operation mode” is grayed out on the video mode. It doesn’t give me the option to turn it on. What could be the issue? Because I can turn it on and off freely for still photos.

    Nice review man, do you use 180 degree at 120 fps or do you change it to something else?

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 років тому +1

      Yep! shutter 250 or sometimes a tiny bit higher but usually just 250.

    • @cod2killskyguy
      @cod2killskyguy 7 років тому +1

      Then you are talking about the shutter speed right? But if you use 180 degree setting it should be okay at any fps wouldnt it? Because then it automatically matches the frame rate

    I also have the GH5 but I really have problems with grain in slow motion! I filmed in FHD 24p with 180fps and I always get so much noise... Do you know how to fix that? Or is this just something I have to deal with..

    Hey Matt! I'm almost sure that write speeds affect frame rate while recording. I'm using a 95Mb/s Read and 60 Mb/s Write, and when i shot in 1080p 60fps my slow motion doesn't look smooth. Please do a video on that topic! Thanks Man! Such a huge inspiration!

  • @musikcreator93

    Hey! So from what I've heard, the 10bit color won't be apparent until you can record in 400mbps. The issue is that the 150mbps compresses the bandwidth need for 10bit and it ends up looking like 8bit. If you're really technical, watch this video, it's super useful: ua-cam.com/video/Sds_DQyfFpI/v-deo.html

      What you say it's true. And not many guys have considered that 400mbps will mean that only sd will have to be bigger than 64. However, bot Neumann films and Yuri Palma has already shown what kind of masterpieces are possible with Gh5 set in 8 bit

    How good is a GH5 for stills/pictures as compared to a A6500. I don't see a lot of people talking about the picture from the GH5.

    Hey man! Great video as always! I'm kind of curious about the converting footage to Pro Res...I currently edit on a 2015 MacBook Pro on Premiere so anything that helps the editing process be more smooth is great. I'm getting the GH5 (currently shooting on the Canon 6D) and want to make sure I can edit the footage. Will converting the files from the GH5 make my life easier? Thanks!
