Locks, Locks & More Locks on the Tenn-Tom Waterway | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 30

- At this point, we’re about halfway into our river journey from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve transited several locks thus far, but no other part of the route has as many locks as Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
It’s one lock right after another on the Tenn-Tom. Some are more memorable that others, making weird squeaks and screeches we’re not used to. We transit the tallest lock on our entire route, Jamie Whitten Lock (84’), where water spews from the sides of small doors in the lock wall, unnerving us both.
All in all, we get another couple hundred miles closer to saltwater by the end of this episode - with only about 400 more to go!

Dropping the hook is always more pleasurable to me than tying up in a marina. Nothing better than sitting out on the deck first thing in the morning and enjoying that first cup of coffee with just the sounds of the wild around you.
You will find, that as you get older and more experienced, you guys will remember the stupid things....The big blunders stick with you the longest and your having to think the problems through is priceless. You could not have bought those memories. You have to live through them...
Just LOVE you guys ! you are so lucky with 1 in snow , here in Grand Marais Minnesota it's -10 with about 50 inch snow on the ground . Feb 24 .SAFE trip !
I'm from that area. I use to work on those locks, for 20 years I stayed between the Tennessee River and all the way south till you reach the Alabama side of the Tenn-Tom again. But it is a beautiful sight. The ugly muddy places are were the old river runs enter the Tenn-Tom and distorts the waters visibility. Enjoyed your video
Great video. Watching the footage reminded me of my epic 180 lock transit from the English Channel (beginning at Le Havre) down to the Mediterranean Sea, back in 1988 with my girlfriend. We did it in 3 weeks and went through Paris, which was epic. Many small manual locks but also a few huge ones like the Jamie Whitten lock you guys transited.

I was in 1985 the first sailboat, called Flyaway, to go north from Gulf of Mexico to Pickwick Lake, thence on to Knoxville. Never remembered any plants floating in locks either. Was surprised to see first lock was renamed from Bay Springs Dam. It was a leaker even when it was new lol! Safe journeys to both of you.

I started watching your later eps. and then chose to go back and watch the beginning of your journey as well. Nice to follow your tour down river here, and the slowly changing nature, industry, locks and sorroundings. You have captured it , and convey the atmosphere authentically. Your filming and editing keeps improving at this stage, and I enjoy your tempered use of drone footage and choice of music.

I crossed over the Tombigbee waterway on a bicycle on the Natchez Trace. A friend and I were riding from Loveless Cafe to Natchez, MS on bikes (444 miles). I didn't know the Tombigbee went to Mobile until watching your video
You two not only love each other but you like each other and that is rare.
Your episodes keep getting better and better! This one kinda made me realize that even tho you two have to bundle up and deal with colder than ideal temps, you really picked the best time to leave the great lakes because the fall colors and morning fog on the water are really beautiful! I'm glad you've documented your time on the lakes and now going down the river. There are a million "sailing in the Caribbean" videos, but you've let me see America from a new angle. I had no idea there were so many navigable rivers in the US.

Have always had a love for sailing. Have never sailed but a week ago I saw a 30ft for sale and it all of a sudden got me interested again. Started doing research and watching videos and that's how I found y'all. And now I'm following along patiently awaiting your next video. I live on the Texas Oklahoma border so my plan is to save up and buy a 30 or so foot and live on it while it's on a trailer and pull it down to the coast and travel wherever I want after that. Y'all's videos has got me stoked about what the future can hold. Have fun and stay safe.

All of your videos since you entered Ky lake bring back strong vivid memories. I kept my boat at Green Turtle Bay Marina for 4 years and then took the route you took to Mobile Bay.... When I went through the Pickwick lock it was a harrowing experince for me we were out of place and all the water surging up underneath the boat pushed us into the wall... similar your experince in Ky damn lock. The operator at pick wick told me that if I had gone all the way up I would have been fine, he can adjust water flow lol... which he did when he relized we were having a hard time. After that I bought to very large ball shaped fenders that kept us off the wall life was much easier after that. Thanks for the memories enjoy your sailing.
cool. good to see home again. pickwick was my playground for the first 20 years of my life. lots of friends fathers who were dozer and excavator operators went to work on the tenn tom cut when i was kid. huge undertaking. made for awesome water skiing early morning and late evening in the summer.
Wow, that was quite a few locks you had to go through but like you said, each new area presented new scenery and that's pretty cool.

You may not know this since you live in Arctic conditions, but you are going to fry in the southern sun without a bimini. Hope getting one made when you get there is on the to do list.
We know it. The Bimini is a long saga of which we will start to share the beginnings of shortly.
one of my favorite transits was down the ditch. did it in October/November. colder than id expected but still very beautiful. keep watch for the barges during early fog. sure will wake you up on an early morning passage.
Your thoughts on the slow change of the landscape around were very philosophical and touched me. I sometimes experience the same but your words described the feeling better than anything I came up with in my mind at the time. Thanks 🙏
Y'all's videos are awesome, I've lived on Pickwick lake my whole life (35 years) and it's great to see it from your perspective, I forget how beautiful it really is, if I had known y'all were here I would've invited y'all to Thanksgiving dinner with my Family, be safe and happy travels!!!

That was an amazing episode. You're cruising right down through my old stomping grounds. The interesting thing as I listened to your description of the "ugly" and "beautiful" I realized how you're seeing some of the poorest and richest areas of that end of the country.

Pickwick was a smoother lift because the lock has a more refined/modern multi port filling and emptying system refined by TVA in the 70’s. In contrast, KY Lock has a 1930’s side port system that is a lot more turbulent and not as efficient.
Love your videos. It’s awesome to see you guys traveling down a river. And I’m so excited for you to get to the golf of Mexico and beyond. I wish you Could put out one video a week. You guys are doing great though I’m so happy for you

Like your channel. FYI when replacing water hoses on a sailboat. Two clamps in opposite directions are required. Don’t want it to disengage in rough sailing and flood the boat.

By the time you make it to Panama, you'll be yawning at the routine :) I sure love all those Fall colors, WOW! So pretty. Our dog jumped off our pontoon last year in the Missouri River. We haven't been without a boat pole since! He made it out but it was hectic trying to grab him. It sure comes in handy. Also, I can't believe I pay good money every Spring for a sprig of those water plants to grow in my pond. Loved this and really liked the music at the end. So perfect! Plan for the lower Ten Tom. Much more narrow with lots of current and tug traffic. Be careful and Great episode.

Nice videos for this series. I'd make a few suggestions: Overview of the route traveled. I saw the map on the first part of the first video but an update so a viewer could relate to position would be cool. If you navigated from the Ohio R to the Tennessee R and downbound to the Tombigbee, you locked through the Wilson lock, highest vertical drop of any lock in the world. Should point that one out. A mystery: why do you tie up on the bollards Port side, away from the forward lock doors when heading downbound? Most craft tie up Starboard and closer to the downbound lock doors.
Nice series! You have renewed our interest on completing the Great Loop. We had always thought the Great Lakes to the Gulf would be boring. But you guys changed our opinion. Thanks John and Miri on M.V. VENTURE

The purpose of the horn is to warn people downstream that a bunch of water is about to be dumped.
Siren= warns that water is being sucked or dumped.
Horn= safe to let loose your securing lines and exit lock.

Those are massive locks! How much water is dumped for just one tiny boat’s passage? Amazing!
