the blatant mismanagement of Playstation first party all the more reaffirms my resolve to shift towards PC this year. I obviously will keep and use my PS5 but its raison d'etre primarily consists of third and second party exclusives for me. There has been almost no communication, zero transparency, little excitement, cases of completely unnecessary censorship, a shift away from physical support and overall more games canceled than released. Obviously, despite all of this the PS5 still had good years, yet the core appeal that really drew me in during the PS4 era is all but gone now.
The utter wasted potential of BluePoint is one of the most frustrating recent updates. There are any number of older franchises from ps1 through 3 that people want remasters/remakes of, and they had THEE perfect studio to put on that and have fantastic results. Nah, live service. FFS

Wow how bad do you think Bend feels right now? That studio has to be at an all time low - I feel awful for the people there. They cancel your single player game sequel, force you onto multiplayer, and spend years on it only for it to be cancelled. Days gone came out in 2019…..we may not see a game from them until 2030. Fans have been asking for Bloodborne anything for years and they had the perfect team to do it, and instead PS leadership wanted them to make a God of War live service game. Unbelievably stupid.
There HAS to be something in the Bloodborne contract/IP ownership entanglement where my guess is that FromSoft has full creative control, down to the Engine and such. Sony probably just owns the name and publishing rights. This puts us in a place where FromSoft would be stupid to make BB2 instead of Elden Ring 2, or Dark Souls 4 (something they have 100% control and ownership of). FromSoft probably has full contractual rights to the BB engine, which is preventing Playstation from being to remaster and/or remake the game. Hell, they probably aren't legally/contractually allowed to do a "next-gen" *update* to get that masterpiece of a game up to 60 FPS. I firmly believe this out of Playstation's hands, people should be made at FromSoft, not Playstation.

This generation is a wash for Sony's first-party. Going in it seemed so promising. Insomniac was releasing several quality games back to back, Sony made studios it worked with closely first-party (Bluepoint, Housemarque, Firesprite). It seemed like they were set to do what they did in the PS4 generation on a larger scale. Then they announced they were going to release like twelve GaaS games by March 2026 or something ridiculous like that. We all thought surely that's mostly second-party stuff. Sony would be smart enough to not force a significant portion of their first-party studios to make live service games, right? I think all but Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, and Housemarque were comfirmed to be or have been working on a live service game at this point. So basically all of them.

If you've ever worked in a place like a call centre, you'd understand that customers doing awful stuff is more frequent and has a terrible effect when you're just trying to get through your day. Think about it statistically. There's a very small number of employees relative to customers. The equivalent of one random employee would be tens of thousands of customers minimum. If someone actually does one of those things you mentioned, it's not harassment to complain about it either.

Would it be fair if an employee there harassed someone and received harassment back that the instigator doesn't receive equal repercussions? Someone there doesn't have to harass someone in order to take the initiative and specify, like they did with that directive towards consumers, that it also applies to their employees. Is your opinion that devs, generally speaking, don't also harass people who criticize games? Surely the rest of the industry is going to see this and mimic it, right? I would hope so at least. It wasn't brought up in the switch discussion, but its cool that Nintendo Switch Online is moving forward with Switch 2. We finally have access to all of the retro games without waiting for them to be announced and slowly added. I love that service.
I had no idea about the Jaffe situation, but I personally don’t really care who the guests are. I like the SS+ episodes because they’re usually very entertaining and informative discussions. Colin could talk to the president of Shinra one week and Barrett the next and I wouldn’t care as long as the episodes are good. So I don’t care who it is or from whatever “aisle” of the political spectrum they come from. I click, listen and move on with my day. Side note: I really enjoy Jaffe when he’s here to be clear.

All fair and good, but people are allowed to not like a person if they act like an ass. I think that’s what Jaffe is running into. People are tired of the song and dance, it’s tiresome. This is because Jaffe has a tendency to ridicule, downplay and condescend to people that have different opinions. Through all that, he will insist that he is in fact an open minded individual. When Sony realized this, they made a panicked purchase of exclusivity for all the Chinese Wukong clones that have been announced in the last few years, until they have some games from their own studios, which are all facing issues in one way or another.
Wanted to give a shout out to Stellar Blade. I know Colin enjoyed it a lot, I started playing at about a week ago. The game is an absolute blast. Great mix of science fiction and post-apocalyptic. Awesome and fun combat, with lots of different options. Including getting some great ranged options, which gives you lots of options during combat. Great mix of open and linear, which I love in games. Really a huge meaty game, that PlayStation fans should definitely check out.
I started playing it recently on ps5 pro and after a slow start it's surprised me how good it's been. Biggest ps5 pro upgrade game I've seen too (runs 80fps and looks like quality mode/4k using the ps5 pro + high framerate option in game menu).
I really enjoyed it over the Christmas break. It seems like its been categorised into a box and many people will miss out on it. Rise of the Ronin is really good too. PS had a pretty good year last year.
Rooster teeth did live video podcast with chat for a decade and uploaded the same video so it's definitely possible Colin. The podcast host did a great job at looking at the chat and staying on topic.
To be fair, that $700 million is across modes, warzone, new additional content in all modes and other on-going supports it's almost like funding 3 separate games all at once (MP and zombies, campaigns, and warzone). It's obviously still a large number but not really as shocking as we maybe thought.
@@firerock277 Black Ops 6 does not have three separate game purchases, this is correct. However, they are three separate parts of the game that are fully featured and fleshed out, each requiring lots of money and resources. For example - The campaign was made separate from Treyarch, Raven Software created the campaign and last dated mentioned they had 350 employees, that could easily have costed $100- $200 million. Zombies is also a fully featured part of Black Ops 6 and so isn't their traditional multiplayer suite and does not do it justice by calling them just different "modes". And you have the ongoing upkeep of a live game, tweaks and updates, new content, and then the changes to the mechanics, guns, multiplayer, look and feel, of a new flagship Black Ops title is also costly. And with Call of Duty being so incredibly successful, we can't just compare it to any other thing.

Don't know if the boys will see this, but in regards to Colin's feelings about Housemarque possibly making live service at one point, I feel like people have forgotten that Housemarque was already in a position where they were about to pivot to live service until their work eventually turned into Returnal and Sony swooped in to fund the project, which ultimately led to them being acquired. The studio still hasn't solved their original problem which was that they weren't able to sell the games wanted to make. Returnal didn't exactly set the world on fire, so I don't think they are out of those woods yet. If Housemarque goes the live service route, it was already on the menu for them rather than some choice that was made for them by Sony.

It’s so funny to me that the PlayStation studios org can be so obviously mismanaged and on fire but as long as hardware is selling well. That’s what matters most to Colin. If the business was just about hardware (that’s sold at a subsidy), they wouldn’t be putting their game on PC. Nor turning their entire org upside down even maintain the current infrastructure despite all the hardware sold. They better hope disruptor (like a Switch 2) shakes the company built on the 30% take rate they get from other companies. Instead of the 100% they’d get from their own software.
I love the contrast of all the Sony backgrounds and quiet sadness in the voices (Apart from Chris having a full nerdgasm over Halo!) thinking about how Sony has fumbled so hard that Xbox is going to own the content pipeline on Sony for the next few uyears and sony has lost probably a couple billion on failed projects and now has no real advantage for the next few years. 1:46:20 For context, in the newest expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, there is a character called Wuk Lamat. People have crunched the numbers online and shown that Wuk Lamat has 4-5x more dialogue than MAIN characters that have been a part of the narrative since the 2.0 release of Final Fantasy XIV in 2013. Only TWO characters have more speaking time than Wuk Lamat. To re-iterate, a character that was introduced to the game in 2024 had 3-6x more lines of dialogue and was more central to the story than important characters who have been in the game since release.
I also could not stand the fact the character was written by someone that so desperately wanted to be a Shonen Jump writer Wuk Lamat is a worse version of Naruto without the years of character growth and struggle.

Don't get me wrong I would love a live show but the intricacies would be a lot of stress for yinz. My business mind thinks these issues: (1) patron pays $10 but it won't be every show so you would have designate a show every month (2) I could see some a-holes complaining that the one live show was only 3 hours and the one that was not was 5 hrs. (3) you schedule a live show and Dustin goes to "Chippers" and goes postal on the workers because of the horrible food so he is 45 minutes late for the show which leads to pissed off patrons (4) Dustin could not be on the show and produce at the same time so you would have to pay someone else
PS5 first party output has been pathetic this generation imo I didn’t buy my PS5 for 3rd party TIMED exclusives… I got it for first party exclusives. 80% of the first party games have been upgraded PS4 games or remakes/remasters.

Very excited! I stopped playing the Switch in January 2022 in anticipation of the Switch 2 hoping that it was backwards compatible and I would be playing games in my backlog with better graphics and performance. I’m excited for the new Switch 2 games but I also can’t wait to play games I missed like Xenoblade 3, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet and Zelda TotK.

It's good to hear that PSVR2 is being given a chance. I think there are some genuinely good games for VR. I play GT7 once a week to do the weekly challenges and get new cars because VR mode makes it so fun to do. Hell i even had a great time with the Mini Golf game and got the platinum. And the controllers are good enough imo.

If you pay attention to the Switch reveal to presentation (12 weeks) to release (7 weeks) timeline then the Switch 2 looks like it's launching in May. The 2's reveal to presentation timeline is 11 weeks, it's shorter than the original. 7 weeks after the presentation is May 22 give or take a week and it's still May. Korea has a hands on event in early June BUT Korea also received the Switch 1 much later than the rest of the world so it can't be viewed as an indicator of when it's launch in major territories like the US and Japan.

They would need five Helldivers to recoup the costs of this disastrous experiment. The lost time and money are already bad enough, once you contemplate what all these failed projects do to the morale of Sony's teams it gets even worse though. Let's hope they learn their lesson for PS6 because this generation is toast. If it weren't for the excellent second-party deals and Xbox dropping all their "exclusives" on PlayStation, the absence of a steady first-party output would be even more dramatic.

the blatant mismanagement of Playstation first party all the more reaffirms my resolve to shift towards PC this year.
I obviously will keep and use my PS5 but its raison d'etre primarily consists of third and second party exclusives for me.
There has been almost no communication, zero transparency, little excitement, cases of completely unnecessary censorship, a shift away from physical support and overall more games canceled than released.
Obviously, despite all of this the PS5 still had good years, yet the core appeal that really drew me in during the PS4 era is all but gone now.

They cancel your single player game sequel, force you onto multiplayer, and spend years on it only for it to be cancelled. Days gone came out in 2019…..we may not see a game from them until 2030. There HAS to be something in the Bloodborne contract/IP ownership entanglement where my guess is that FromSoft has full creative control, down to the Engine and such. Sony probably just owns the name and publishing rights.
This puts us in a place where FromSoft would be stupid to make BB2 instead of Elden Ring 2, or Dark Souls 4 (something they have 100% control and ownership of).
FromSoft probably has full contractual rights to the BB engine, which is preventing Playstation from being to remaster and/or remake the game. Hell, they probably aren't legally/contractually allowed to do a "next-gen" *update* to get that masterpiece of a game up to 60 FPS.
I firmly believe this out of Playstation's hands, people should be made at FromSoft, not Playstation.

This generation is a wash for Sony's first-party. Going in it seemed so promising. Insomniac was releasing several quality games back to back, Sony made studios it worked with closely first-party (Bluepoint, Housemarque, Firesprite). It seemed like they were set to do what they did in the PS4 generation on a larger scale.
Then they announced they were going to release like twelve GaaS games by March 2026 or something ridiculous like that. We all thought surely that's mostly second-party stuff. Sony would be smart enough to not force a significant portion of their first-party studios to make live service games, right? I think all but Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, and Housemarque were comfirmed to be or have been working on a live service game at this point. So basically all of them.

You're making excuses for harassing people. If you've ever worked in a place like a call centre, you'd understand that customers doing awful stuff is more frequent and has a terrible effect when you're just trying to get through your day.
Think about it statistically. There's a very small number of employees relative to customers. The equivalent of one random employee would be tens of thousands of customers minimum.

When Sony realized this, they made a panicked purchase of exclusivity for all the Chinese Wukong clones that have been announced in the last few years, until they have some games from their own studios, which are all facing issues in one way or another.
Wanted to give a shout out to Stellar Blade. I know Colin enjoyed it a lot, I started playing at about a week ago. The game is an absolute blast. Great mix of science fiction and post-apocalyptic. Awesome and fun combat, with lots of different options. Including getting some great ranged options, which gives you lots of options during combat. Great mix of open and linear, which I love in games. Really a huge meaty game, that PlayStation fans should definitely check out.
I started playing it recently on ps5 pro and after a slow start it's surprised me how good it's been. Biggest ps5 pro upgrade game I've seen too (runs 80fps and looks like quality mode/4k using the ps5 pro + high framerate option in game menu).
I really enjoyed it over the Christmas break. It seems like its been categorised into a box and many people will miss out on it. Rise of the Ronin is really good too. PS had a pretty good year last year.
Sony fans getting excited for Xbox games is hilarious ... this isn't a big deal people, anyone with a 400$ PC could play these games for years now ...

To be fair, that $700 million is across modes, warzone, new additional content in all modes and other on-going supports it's almost like funding 3 separate games all at once (MP and zombies, campaigns, and warzone). It's obviously still a large number but not really as shocking as we maybe thought.

@@firerock277 Black Ops 6 does not have three separate game purchases, this is correct. However, they are three separate parts of the game that are fully featured and fleshed out, each requiring lots of money and resources.
For example - The campaign was made separate from Treyarch, Raven Software created the campaign and last dated mentioned they had 350 employees, that could easily have costed $100- $200 million. Zombies is also a fully featured part of Black Ops 6 and so isn't their traditional multiplayer suite and does not do it justice by calling them just different "modes".
And you have the ongoing upkeep of a live game, tweaks and updates, new content, and then the changes to the mechanics, guns, multiplayer, look and feel, of a new flagship Black Ops title is also costly. And with Call of Duty being so incredibly successful, we can't just compare it to any other thing.

Don't know if the boys will see this, but in regards to Colin's feelings about Housemarque possibly making live service at one point, I feel like people have forgotten that Housemarque was already in a position where they were about to pivot to live service until their work eventually turned into Returnal and Sony swooped in to fund the project, which ultimately led to them being acquired.
The studio still hasn't solved their original problem which was that they weren't able to sell the games wanted to make. Returnal didn't exactly set the world on fire, so I don't think they are out of those woods yet.
If Housemarque goes the live service route, it was already on the menu for them rather than some choice that was made for them by Sony.

It’s so funny to me that the PlayStation studios org can be so obviously mismanaged and on fire but as long as hardware is selling well. That’s what matters most to Colin. If the business was just about hardware (that’s sold at a subsidy), they wouldn’t be putting their game on PC. Nor turning their entire org upside down even maintain the current infrastructure despite all the hardware sold. They better hope disruptor (like a Switch 2) shakes the company built on the 30% take rate they get from other companies. Instead of the 100% they’d get from their own software.
I love the contrast of all the Sony backgrounds and quiet sadness in the voices (Apart from Chris having a full nerdgasm over Halo!) thinking about how Sony has fumbled so hard that Xbox is going to own the content pipeline on Sony for the next few uyears and sony has lost probably a couple billion on failed projects and now has no real advantage for the next few years. Especially as you guys have been pushing the narrative that Sonys first party is the strongest in the industry for years. I guess thats changed now though, thanks xbox for saving Sony again though.

People have crunched the numbers online and shown that Wuk Lamat has 4-5x more dialogue than MAIN characters that have been a part of the narrative since the 2.0 release of Final Fantasy XIV in 2013. Only TWO characters have more speaking time than Wuk Lamat.
To re-iterate, a character that was introduced to the game in 2024 had 3-6x more lines of dialogue and was more central to the story than important characters who have been in the game since release.
I also could not stand the fact the character was written by someone that so desperately wanted to be a Shonen Jump writer Wuk Lamat is a worse version of Naruto without the years of character growth and struggle.

Don't get me wrong I would love a live show but the intricacies would be a lot of stress for yinz. My business mind thinks these issues: (1) patron pays $10 but it won't be every show so you would have designate a show every month (2) I could see some a-holes complaining that the one live show was only 3 hours and the one that was not was 5 hrs. (3) you schedule a live show and Dustin goes to "Chippers" and goes postal on the workers because of the horrible food so he is 45 minutes late for the show which leads to pissed off patrons (4) Dustin could not be on the show and produce at the same time so you would have to pay someone else

Very excited! I stopped playing the Switch in January 2022 in anticipation of the Switch 2 hoping that it was backwards compatible and I would be playing games in my backlog with better graphics and performance.
I’m excited for the new Switch 2 games but I also can’t wait to play games I missed like Xenoblade 3, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet and Zelda TotK.

It's good to hear that PSVR2 is being given a chance. I think there are some genuinely good games for VR. I play GT7 once a week to do the weekly challenges and get new cars because VR mode makes it so fun to do. Hell i even had a great time with the Mini Golf game and got the platinum. And the controllers are good enough imo.

PS has probably canceled more first party games then they released this gen, and spent 5+ billion for the live service push with no results, for anyone in denial its time to admit PS5 success is solely on momentum from the PS4 because the decisions from management this gen have been nothing short of catastrophic.
Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst have been terrible for PS, if Xbox, Ubisoft, or EA canceled as many games, and wasted these studios time spending years only to be scraped everyone would be mercilessly roasting them saying their dead, its time to hold Playstation accountable and stop pretending they're infallible.
Playstation is lucky Microsoft management are clueless about gaming and forcing Xbox to be fully multiplat because they're on track to release 6+ games a year while PS has 1-2 while the rest of their studios have to start from scratch from this live service disaster and aren't likely to release until the PS6, its time to admit outside a few good games this gen has be one of Playstations worst.

That doesn't mean I want to deplatform him or control how he expresses his opinions. The only reason people obsess over Jaffe is because he targets THEM specifically so they notice it.
If you pay attention to the Switch reveal to presentation (12 weeks) to release (7 weeks) timeline then the Switch 2 looks like it's launching in May. The 2's reveal to presentation timeline is 11 weeks, it's shorter than the original. 7 weeks after the presentation is May 22 give or take a week and it's still May. Korea has a hands on event in early June BUT Korea also received the Switch 1 much later than the rest of the world so it can't be viewed as an indicator of when it's launch in major territories like the US and Japan.

@ You should ask yourself the same question. If there is another Uncharted being worked on, it’s not by Naughty Dog. Now I might be mistaken but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard Naught Dog say they are done with Uncharted. You can believe what you want but if I were a betting man, I’d would bet the only other game Naughty Dog is working on is TLOU part III. I’d even go so far as to say that Intergalactic isn’t the only new IP being developed at Naughty Dog.
