No. It is done. We don't need "background stories". It is over. We just have to accept that the franchise is done. There is the saying to let it go when it is at the best moment. If we continue we just milk the franchise and it will just feel shitty and meaningless, not to mention that it will destroy the first 4 movies. We have to let go, the story is done.

You forgot the most important part. They set it up for Mr. Nobody. Who happened to save John about four times in the movie. I’m surprised you didn’t mention him once in your review, considering he is a integral part of the new storyline.
Agreed. Even at the end of the movie after John gets shot they keep cutting to long shots of Mr. Nobody watching. Seemed to give him way more screentime there than necessary…unless of course he’s the new focus of the franchise

I'll be surprised if he's actually dead. Winston and the Bowery King saying "who knows?" and laughing after asking whether he went to heaven or hell, made me think he's taking no chances of being brought back into the fold after finally being free of the high table, and faked his death
That overview inside the building scene looked like a video game and it was amazing
To me, it felt like a love letter to CoD Zombies with the Hades Spas-12 incinerary rounds and the overview being like Rainbow 6: Siege

Yes the inspiration for that scene as per interviews was a game called Hong Kong massacre which is itself inspired by Hotline miami

Akira attempt to kill Caine. Just as she’s about to go in for the blow, she gets attacked by assassins sent from the high table. There is a hit on her head due to her being the Osaka concierge and the daughter of the manager who helped John Wick. Caine intercept the assassins just in time. He and her dispatch the assassins accordingly. Caine goes through a redemption arc for killing both of his friends, Akira’s father and John Wick. Akira realizes it wasn’t Caine’s fault but the high table. She also realizes they would never stop hunting her down until all of the high table is dead. Caine and Akira teams up, and this will be the story for a new John Wick spinoff.
The “John Wick” name is dead. But the man himself is alive. He no longer bears the name he had as someone who served the Table. He has a new name as a freeman. Hence, a grave for his former self.
When you remember all of this happened just a few days/weeks after the funeral of Wick’s wife. Most exhausting, and unorthodox, Shiva period ever.
first 3 movies happen in a span of about two-three weeks this 4th was probably at least 2 or so months after the 3rd due to the time needed to recover from injuries in the third

The movie opens with 4 literal horsemen of death signaling the end of the world or at least John’s journey… for now

The original plan was to shoot JW 4 and 5 back to back and the pandemic happened, the Constantine sequel was announced, and the director has the Ghost of Tsushima thing going on plus Ballerina. My money is in that he is not dead, and he will be returning for one last movie.

As Mr. Wick and the Wiki says: “that he will continue making sequels, as long as the films are successful.” So I’m expecting that John Wick 5 onwards will be his life story, starting as an assassin in the High Table, meeting his wife, until his dog die.

Him and Caine shot each other in the same spot. Plus the grave didn’t have fresh dirt. He survived multiple gun shot wounds to the abdomen and multiple stab wounds through the entire franchise. But two glancing shots and one shot through the love handle killed him, what an a plus send off.
There’s a motif in the movie that is brought up several times throughout the film that Keanu represents 2 people “John” the loving husband and John Wick the lover of death. John wick is dead, but the will of “John” doesn’t end until he makes sure that nobody is left to hold his remaining friends and family hostage ,to the will of the high table, like they did him.
Also, in my opinion there would be no John wick franchise without John wick. It’s like having Rambo without Rambo; it makes no sense.
unlike rambo john wick has a living world that can flourish without him.
There will definitely be a a spin off, but ending Johns story like this was glorious. No prequels needed.

this is classic, let the audiences spend their times wondering whether john is dead or not. This is what makes a movie classic, because we don't know. Imaging if we don't know who darth vader is, then it is the best villain in the movie history.

Did everybody bump their heads falling down the stairs and forgot what happened in John wick 3?
1) The doctor showed John wick, 2 spots, where to shoot the doctor and inflict only a flesh wound. Caine shot John in the same spot where John shot the doctor.
2) caine was talking about if it's a choice between his daughter or John, John is dying for sure. John replied with, maybe not. This is where John let caine in on the plan. The plan was to set up the marquis and get caine, his daughter off the hook and stop the high table from going after John wick.
3) the plan was in place that's why caine helped John wick up the stairs the second time, so John and Winston wouldn't forfeit lose the duel. If caine wanted to win, he would just have to do nothing and John would have lost and caine wouldn't have to lift a finger.

Since we learn more of the rules in each movie, maybe one has to "die" to evolve to the " one above the high table". There is a few vacancies open in that spot and Wick would be perfect for it.

John let Cane shot him so he can kill De Gramot because John said he will kill him. John knew Gramot would make a rule up so he can kill him. So John let Cane shot him, then Gramot stepped on battlefield and died. Winston said use his rules to stop him and John did exactly that.

Going with 7:18 John Wick was the killer that was brought back to life after the death of his puppy and he died after his revenge, but John the chill puppy owner (or Jonathan as Winston calls him) is alive and well and he will probably comeback in some future John Wick Universe Movie as a helping hand or a cool celeb to hype the movie up. Or another John Wick movie; ain't way they are ending his story in a 4th movie, they probably will go with another trilogy :)
Actually, the John Wick the Loving Husband could be dead, but John Wick the Killer could be still alive, and he could be going to take down the High Table with Winston as was planned on the third movie.

You need to watch the last scene again. He’s not dead. It’s implied that He and the blind man made a plan in the church . He faked his death to truly be free. In the last scene, the dog turns it’s head to look at something that catches its attention while standing at John’s “grave”. John was watching them in the distance.
Only thing that is bothering me is that an alive John would want to keep his dog.

Wick is not dead. His body was placed in the casket and lowered into the ground and covered up. Then in a dimly lit tunnel a panel in the ceiling slowly opens. Moments later the bottom of the casket opens and out comes John. Wounded but not dead.

John Wick is dead and buried. "John", however is alive. It is an obvious open ploy by the director and writers to open end the franchise and it works, especially with the altered end credit released in only one venue. It solves the "Is john Wick dead" question and keeping the ability to bring in Reeves in any future spinoffs or chapter 5. The assassin persona is dead, the grieving husband is still alive.

The biggest hint to his being alive is that the blind guy didn't want to kill him anyway so he wouldn't fatally shoot him.

The killer John Wick that is indebted to the high table is dead. The loving husband, muscle car driving, dog owner is alive under his real name. That John who’s family has a seat at the high table will HAVE TO return to fulfill a family duty that he swore in this one.
