Nice playing here from Rob. A bit introverted, a bit exploratory. I see someone else didn't dig that, but I think it's part of being an improvising musician, and a healthy part of it.
Honestly doesn't really feel like his heart is in it. The lines playing "out" are a little unconvincing and ideas (esp first half) aren't very melodic. His technique is excellent, just wish it was more musical.
I think what you view as “lack of heart” to him is what he intentionally heard and wanted to say in the solo. There was about 2-3 different trombone influences that were shown. Good amount of JJ Johnson too.
