What do Orthodox Christians think of non-Orthodox Christians? In my investigation of Orthodoxy, I've received varied answers to this question, and in this video I talk with Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick about this question as well as the larger question, why be Orthodox? Fr. Andrew shares his thoughts on Protestants, Catholics, as well as opening up about some of the challenges facing Orthodoxy. We even get into the hot topic issue of internet orthodoxy. Enjoy!

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a UA-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

As a former Protestant pastor who converted to Roman Catholicism and is now in the process of conversion to Orthodoxy, Fr. Damick said something in here that was very true for me. He said that some become enamored with Catholic doctrine but can't find a parish to experience that. That has most certainly been true of my experience. I'm also one of those theology nerds (being a seminary grad) but the "on the ground" experience of Orthodoxy is truly and deeply more profound than modern Catholicism. Excellent interview!

But God is so good he has even brought me to the True Church the Orthodox Faith to truly see my sins which He is showing me and bringing me to repent of my sins through Orthodox teaching and practices which I struggle to grasp and follow. The island I have spent most time on is Rhodes, and I kept being drawn back to a hotel in the old town. I was familiar with the Saints of the other islands but never occurred to me who the Patron Saint of Rhodes was ( I did know St Paul stepped foot on St Paul's bay in Lindos). It was only in England when I for the first time entered a Greek Orthodox Church (I had started in a Church in the Russian tradition) that I discovered who my Saint is. At the end of the liturgy an icon of St Phanorious was brought out along with the Fanoriapita (it wasn't yet his feast day). When I enquired about St Phanorious I discovered the hotel I always stayed at in Rhodes Town is close to the church that has his miraculous icon.

To those who want me to "name names" -- no. I was asked about the phenomena of Orthodox problems on the Internet, so I described some examples of problematic behaviors. I'm not interested in calling anyone out, stirring up scandal, etc. People who behave badly can do that on their own.
Part of my job as a clergyman who works in communication especially on the Internet is to offer a critique of what I see. If it resonates with you, great. If you think I'm full of crap, then don't listen to me.
I appreciate Austin having me on his show and being willing to bring up even the stuff where we Orthodox have problems.
We need to do a lot better and a lot more to treat the Internet as the mission field that it is, because people need Christ. They don't need me or my opinions or anyone else's, so you're free to ignore me. But we do need to preach Christ a whole lot more and a whole lot better.

Absolutely. Makes me think of this wonderful quote:
"Too often modern Christians forget that the Church is not just an institution, but the Kingdom of God that is here but is still to come. The Church is described as the Bride of Christ. We are betrothed to Christ. The second coming is the wedding day and the final consummation. Therefore, we live this present life in two dimensions: as saved and yet hoping for salvation; as betrothed to Christ and yet in anticipation and anxiety for the consummation of the marriage; as joyful and yet penitent; as having everything and yet possessing nothing; as living in this world and yet “having here no continuing city”; as in the world yet not of the world; as being members of Christ’s Church, receiving the new life of baptism and eternal life in the Eucharist; and yet as striving to be made worthy of the Kingdom to come. This double character of Christian life is absolutely essential to the Church’s spirituality and role within society. "

This is perhaps one of the best videos I’ve watched. I didn’t agree with EVERYTHING, however the Charity, nuance, reflection, and contextual awareness employed by both of you in presenting the spirit Eastern Orthodoxy is very refreshing in a media environment that polarizes everything (especially between Romans, Eastern Catholics, and Orthodox). It’s “Not about defeating enemies, but winning brethren.” Just a great neighborly approach and Christlike. What stood out to me the most is that, Orthodox Christianity is about practical steps on HOW to be a Christian -- discipleship. As my confession father once told me when I asked how not to sin:
    1) Every Christian should have a *spiritual rule* (prayers, Scriptures, confession, etc.)
    2) Every Christian should have a *spiritual place* (the church and your little personal spot at home)

Of course having sound Biblical doctrine is important, but I remember basically assembling my points so that I could "defeat" other arguments. Plus I was motivated by refuting the pentecostalism I was raised in. But I can definitely say that my motivations are much clearer and less combative now. When I told my parents I was pursuing orthodoxy, my mom, who was a little unsure of how to respond, said, "as long as you are seeking Christ first." Fr. Andrew's closing comments are exactly why I converted to Orthodoxy nearly 4 years ago after being a cradle Catholic for nearly 40 years. I just felt there were too many distractions, righteous as they may appear, keeping me from a real relationship with Christ. How interesting that hearing a story from a Latin Rite Catholic exorcist priest, Fr. Ripperger, about how the devil tries to keep us from thinking about ANYTHING but God would deliver me to the Orthodox Christian Church.
I also thought Fr. Andrew did a good job of putting into words how I have felt about all the discontinuity in Roman Catholic worship, so thank you for that, Fr.Andrew!

Fr . Andrew, it was an absolute pleasure for me to watch this video. You are one of the most dedicated, Christ centered, honest and holy priests I’ve ever met or listened to Catholic or Orthodox. I see Christ all over you. To tell you the truth I know Catholic priests that are as zealous as you but unfortunately they’re not the majority. I’m an Armenian Orthodox but I also love Catholic devotions like the Holy Rosary ❤️❤️❤️ and the Divine Mercy Chaplet ❤️❤️❤️. I also pray the Orthodox Jesus prayer all day long along with other prayers. But I agree with you that the Catholic mass has become quite casual (God forgive me) and quite permissive of immodest clothing and things like that and I have commented on these issues to many priests but they don’t listen. You are right that there is much more reverence in the Orthodox Church and I LOVE it. God is HOLY and all worship and reverence is due to Him.
God bless you father, I’ll be praying for you.

I really appreciate the discussion on worship. One thing I really became discouraged about was the way “worship” is often handled in my tradition.in many cases it is almost idolized for its own sake by some, or used as a method of attraction to outsiders or seekers. It’s viewed as an asset or liability based on how good the talent is or how well it is performed. But worship is for God. Only then can it nourish humans. That, I think, is the perspective and practice of the Divine Liturgy.

Jay Dyer's work has been absolutely invaluable in my discernment process. (Jay is one of the people Fr. Damick indirectly slanders after the 1hr mark.) He's not without personal flaws, but he has told his audience and me personally on many occasions that he is not a spiritual guide or theologian, and that he should not be referred to as such. Frankly, I think that anyone who would let the affect of one man dissuade them from looking into Orthodoxy was not earnestly seeking the True Church in the first place.
It's also worth noting that Jay has been instrumental in a kind of dissident Right-to-Orthodoxy pipeline. If this seems like a bad thing to you, you are in need of some serious reflection. Orthodoxy has softened my heart and deracialized my attitudes (which had only become racialized since 2017-2018), and I wouldn't have found the Church without Jay's work. Fr. Damick is out of touch.

The presence of Christ is in the Liturgy and if you desire Christ, you desire the worship and His Church. And this is not just an idea. It is His answer to me. Coming from RC through Hinduism and then spending almost 20 years in Protestantism and RC again before finding Orthodoxy at the ripe old age of 56, I think God gave me Orthodoxy at the exact right time. It would have been too difficult for my selfish nature any earlier and I probably wouldn’t have stayed! Also, now I can talk to those in the other traditions that I was part of about my experiences and hopefully help them see the beauty, goodness and fullness of Truth that is Orthodox Christianity! 🙏🏻☦️🙏🏻

Great video! Regarding the Catholic/Orthodox divide on Liturgy-focus, Doctrine-focus, and Discipline-focus, I think there is a single issue that arises again and again: Authority.
We know that men in authority-positions make bad decisions sometimes. YET, we know that Christ gave us offices of authority of SOME kind, in the Church, both to SERVE us and to UNIFY us.
We know that we are sometimes morally-obligated to go along with a bad decision, even though we disagree with it, out of loyalty to the authority instituted by Christ. (IF it was.)
YET, we ALSO know that we are sometimes morally-obligated to disobey an evil command, even when it is made by a person in an office of authority, because the decision exceeds the proper authority of his office, and thus doesn't bind us to obedience.
All are agreed about the above; so, the question is: How do we play that out? How do we distinguish what is and isn't binding? When IS, and when ISN'T, it possible for a valid authority to "bind" us to something incorrect? Doctrine? Morals? Liturgy? ARE there any topics where it can be wrong, but still binding?
I think we agree that if a bishop says, "Murder this person for me," we say, "No." We don't obey even our bishop, if our bishop commands us to disobey the Law of God.
But what if a bishop says, "You shall hold, as a matter of faith, that Palamism is true in such a way that wherever Thomas Aquinas' views seem to conflict on Essence/Energies, Palamism is correct and Aquinas is in error; and if anyone holds otherwise, he is in heresy and may not commune." Is such a ruling binding on all the faithful? If not, why not? If so, upon what principle? Could it ever be reversed? If it could plausibly be reversed, what would that mean? I mean, if it later WERE reversed, how could we thereafter hold that it wasn't an error, initially? ...and, if it could possibly have been an error initially, how could we ever have thought it "binding?"
And what if a bishop says, "Add this cheesy puppet thing into the liturgy, to keep the preschoolers entertained" ...? That's irreverent. It'll literally hurt evangelization and chase teenagers out of Christianity. "Lex orandi," and all that. Seems like a horrifyingly dumb move. But, is it a command to commit a moral evil? Is lame worship the same as sacrilege? Is it possible for one early tradition's liturgical practice to seem off-putting to another tradition's, without either of them being actually in error? Bad aesthetics, as such, are not a violation of the Ten Commandments...or, if we say that non-excellence in divine worship constitutes a failure to worship, then we're stretching definitions in a very debatable way. But that which is debatable, different laity will come to different conclusions about. SO: Do we resist the bishop, or not? Is this a time for obedience, or pushback? If pushback produces schism, is this a time for schism? Is there ever such a time?
We MUST resolve such questions, if there is ever to be an objectively-identifiable thing in the world called "Christianity," and not a thousand competing things vying for that title, with every layperson helplessly making his best guess about which system allows him to faithfully follow Christ! I mean, honestly: If tomorrow, an atheist plumber receives an insight from the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the Son of God and really rose from the dead (and no more than that), what is he to do? How shall he find "the Church?" ...when the "Yellow Pages" (apologies for the dated reference) contain pages-upon-pages of "churches?"
Authority can produce unity IF, and ONLY IF, questions like these can be answered, and we can KNOW that they were answered, and KNOW that God has authorized and approved the answers.
And IF we arrive at a conclusion about Authority, it will follow of logical necessity that sometimes we will watch in resigned vexation as divinely-authorized authority figures fail us badly. We may well be obligated to join a Church where the liturgy is bad, because the authority-view is correct (and one where you have to obey authority even when it screws up the liturgy). OR, we may be obligated to join a Church where the liturgy is good but the doctrine is full of unresolved and unresolvable debates, because the correct authority-model protects liturgy but not doctrinal certainty, resulting in disunity and indifferentism.
Either would happen, will happen, depending on what the correct model for Authority in the Church is.
So, it all comes down to authority. That question must be resolved FIRST, before we pick our favorite church on the basis of "Best Liturgies" or "Most Well-Fleshed-Out Doctrinal System."
