But that for the band to get to where they wanted to go they had to stomach Roth joining them because he had that presence about him that portrayed him as a guy who could front a band at the highest level. So it was no surprise that once they achieved that highest level with the 1984 album and the song Jump going to number 1, it all ended soon after that.
By which time Dave was about to release the interesting 'Crazy From The Heat' EP@@TheTapesArchive He also may have still held out hope that by late '85 he and VH along w/Michael Anthony would have gathered at 5150 for the sessions for what would have been the 5150 album or something similar, but one will never know. I can't help but think that record would have been more rock..more what I call 'Van Halen street' than what 5150 is.
Wow Dave was in top form he definitely sounds stoned which is probably Dave's natural habitat and it's nice to know Dave was still an armchair philosopher back in 85 I was under the impression it took him some time to grow into that, great interview.
5150 with Dave is so weird to think about. Especially Dave talking about some of the songs Ed was working on at the time. Which apparently he had the workings of Good Enough and Summer nights pretty early on so maybe Dave was talking about that. Pretty interesting thing but it’s kinda sad knowing Dave never did another album in the 80s with VH. But if 1984 was gonna be his last, I’m glad it was. that one
That line about waking up alone and a busy signal on the phone is pretty revealing. it goes back to how Dave got in the band and his very first meeting with the brothers. It's strange to hear him sound that insecure but it explains EVERYTHING about his departure. When he left, his star was at it's highest point and to me, that was WHY he left, he felt like he'd drawn enough gravitas to pull off a successful solo career and in some measure, he was correct. If he'd known the grunge era was JUST around the corner, he might not have done it.
I believe Dave got into VH because in Mammoth Ed didn't want to sing in the band and the band Dave was in had a PA system Mammoth wanted. Also Dave's band RED BALL JET were kind of competitors in Pasadena so they thought they would combine their resources......I seem to remember Alex once said that in the very beginning before Dave suggested the band called themselves 'Van Halen' that Dave was like a 'BOWIE clone' ..🤔...But he rapidly found his feet & re-invented himself. There were people who said he dressed & moved a bit like Jim Dandy but I can't imagine poor Jim rocketing off the drum riser doing the mid air Olympic splits DAVE was doing.....lol .....Even Sammy looked a bit sheepish jumping up on the live without a Net video in 1986 because he knew people were going to compare his physical stuff with Dave's. In that department Dave was a hard act for ANYONE to follow I guess. He couldn't compete with Sammy on the high range vocals of course but each had their strong points.
@@MrOctober44 It exploded in 1991 but the ripples were felt in late 1989 as bands like Alice in Chains and others were already on the scene in and around Seattle. The hair metal/glam rock scene had become it's own joke and there was bound to be a violent recoil at some point as music fans sought something a bit less pretentious. As soon as the glam rage faded out, the summer glam rock tours gained steam again. I remember the 90's as all the nostalgia acts released their greatest hits albums and then toured on them. You could go see a triple bill with Poison, Ratt and Firehouse...stuff like that and people loved it...again.
I thought I'd heard about every DLR interview out there. Along comes this Gem. Dave presented Van Halen to the world! "The toastmaster general for the Immoral majority" as he put it. Luv this Interview!
Excellent interview. I like the interviews with Dave where he is genuine. So many of them, he is trying to be a comedian and spewing out phony one liners in and attempt to be "quote worthy".
Dave was great in little bite size chunks…custom built for MTV back in the day. Had a solid 10 year run. Got a little weird after that but what the hell we still luv ya Dave!
It really is a miracle, especially when you think of just how opposite Ed & Dave were. They really needed to tolerate each other. But I imagine the 3 of them really wanted to rattle Dave at times. Just him being non-stop attention seeking Dave, 24x7, would be hard to take.
Same as Steven Tyler,a wonderful crazy genius who who is sensational in small doses but would probably drive me crazy on a tour bus or in a hotel room.
I love Dave. I respect Dave. Very intelligent. Very articulate. Van Halen was never the same without him. But, I cannot imagine spending more than 5 min with him. It would be absolutely exhausting. I totally understand why the VH bros could not continue with Dave.
I was surprised when Dave left because I believed all the pictures in the teen rock magazines . Ed was always with Dave and vice versa . I thought the band were tight . Like they said they were close against critics . What most of us didn't know is they finally started earning their fair share in profits with 1984 . Their first contract with Warner Brothers was a rip-off big interest loan to pay for their first album and touring costs . They didn't make any money for the majority of their first contract . The band's first royalty checks were about $80 each . Yeah , eighty dollars . I think the big load of Dave's share of money inspired him to go solo .
Yes you got that right ✅ his mind is always 10 steps ahead of whoever he's talking to .he never ever give the interviewer time to come up with a question let alone have the time to ask it .he's like the energizer bunny on Crack they ask him something he answers it in a very round about way but elaborates on it as if another question was asked when it wasn't and just keeps taking it to different places but ends up back to where he started before his rambling with .and he's not dumb at all .very smart and articulate. Think had he not been a singer in a rock and roll band he could have been a philosopher but nah they don't get enough attention .he definitely craves attention. that's why he loves to talk to himself
Dave is a genius creatively as was Eddie Roth left because of control and Ed's recording studio the sad thing is it took too long to get back together the time and creativity had passed.
Makes me wish DLR would have done 5150 before his departure...glad we got Eat em and Smile & Skyscraper as worthy consulations..thanks for the interview! 😀👍
amazing interview! But something is odd with editing. It’s sped up a tad too much, compressed. It sounds more like an AI version of Dave, than actually Dave
Diamond Dave did an interview with Drew and Mike on 101.1 The Wriff that was amazing. He is the best entertainer in the world! This Detroiter misses Drew & Mike in the mornings. The airwaves lost a lot when you guys left. RIP Mike!
Yes I heard Dave make 2 direct and deliberate descriptions of VHagar , and 1 direct and deliberate descriptions of DLR , and 1 by Alex toward Dave , and I thought all 4 were true , accurate and even that ol thing that the band had all throughout the years , regardless if they were together or taking shots at the other side when they were apart . But anyway , here goes : (1). DLR at Sammy. Joe Rogan asked /told Dave that the band was different with Hagar on mic than they were with Dave and Joe said , in a nutshell why the band being different to accommodate each singer . Dave just said , well Hagar is a mixed up guy . He’s a miserable guy who’s never happy but all of his songs have Love in them . When it’s Love ! , Why can’t this be Love. But now I draw your attention to when I’m on the mic , because I Ain’t talkin bout Love ! Then not long back Alex made a comment on Dave and his contributions in the studio , and by the way both brothers had nothing bad to say about Dave and his input towards the music , but Alex said “”With Dave , he has a lot of input , a little too much at times . I’d say 80% of what Dave comes up with is pure garbage. But if we’re patient , and wait it out , the remaining 20% he comes up with is brilliant “” Then (3) , Eddie commented on the times when a fan will ask him about Dave , as in the time a fan asked him about the lyrics to the song “Can’t get this stuff no more” . The fan liked the song , it was at the time climbing the charts and the fan liked it and wanted to know some of the lyrics and wanted to know what the song was about , and in typical VH fashion , Eddie says , to tell you the truth , uh I really don’t know ! Uh Dave handles all the lyrics and us other 3 , mainly me handle the music. I mean I know some of the lyrics but as to what they mean , ah I know he titled it Can’t get this stuff no more and he repeats that trout the song and although he mentions more than once the message of not being able to get something any longer , but as far as I know , he never actually mentions what it is that you can’t get no more of ? So , if I were you, I would find Dave and ask him , because I don’t know ? Then he was asked if it made things kyotic , Ed said no , that’s just Dave I, I’m used to things like that , but it’s just one of those things that you work through. Dave is a very intelligent well read guy and his mental abilities will surprise you . The one thing that makes it difficult sometimes in communication. It’s like Dave has all this information in his head spinning around up in there but there are times that’s he seems to have trouble connecting all the dots ,! And last but not least , Bsck in about 2002 or so right before Warner Bros told The band , that they needed to do something game changing. WB told them , offered them a huge contract I heard in the neighborhood of $ 200 million dollars if they would reunite with Dave with a new album and tour. This was when the band had not done a whole lot for a long while and their last album VH III didn’t do so well and their label was just trying to land one last big one out of them . WB told them the money was theirs if they reunited with Roth. A slightly smaller package could be had if they could do the Dave reunite trick that they would settle for Hagar but due to the disaster of the Van Halen III , they had a couple of options. Option one : Warner Bros knew the possible power and explosiveness of a a Roth New album tour and that’s why they offered so much ! Option 2. A smaller deal with Hagar. Hagar trip would not match Daves ? But they also knew that aSammy 4:06 deal would still bring back some financially handsome returns . Option 3 was that if the band could not work out a album tour deal with either of the singers then Ban Halen would have to find , work into our groove with a new and acceptable new singer , that Warner Bros would have no other alternative but to release the band and dissolve their association with the band they had been with for 20-25 years. At this time Eddie was battling Cancer and his hip issue and Wolf was still a good 5 years of 😮away from graduating HS and Ed wanted to be home for that time, as bd Eddie has said that WB had some unusual Conditions that he wasn’t going to be willing to concede. I believe these were related to Artistic control. To make a long story short , the band did the Best of Both Worlds album and tour and all that Hagar BS and Dave had a hilarious comment when asked about the band choosing Hagar to do the tour thing . A lot don’t know that Fave had spent a lot of time with the band prior to the big thing coming together and it left some sour taste in Dave’s mouth ( understandably so ) and when asked. About it at the time Dave said ,,,,,,, “” You know , Van Halen getting back together with Hagar is like looking at and admiring a beautiful drop dead gorgeous woman walking the runway at a fashion show! But the it’s like she opens her mouth to talk and she’s got the worst teeth you’ve ever seen !
He seems more open and normal in this interview then his usual jokey style that he does and it's a little odd that she's calling it like he's not being that way.
I wish Dave had a 'normal' button someone could have pushed at times in interviews. Dave was a really bright and articulate interview, but he was always 'on' and his constant use of odd metaphors and analogies were frustrating (to me). Just once, I would have liked to hear a candid, straight-forward, honest answer.
Oh yeah Dave is highly intelligent and very very insightful .like I've said many times had he not been a singer in a Rock Band he could have been a philosopher .but wouldn't have wanted to cause they don't get enough attention
@@TheTapesArchive yes for sure, that’s why I’m surprised he declined to talk about it. Maybe it was already causing friction in the band? I know he approached the band about the soundtrack and making that the next album. It wasn’t well received by the brothers lol.
Why does the audio of Dave kind of sound a bit odd? Like its an AI thing or something at points? Not saying it is, just curious why it sounds choppy at moments! :)
Enough BS about his vocals. Without DLR ...it's very plausible EVH wouldn't have gotten the well deserved accolades and legend status. Dave brought the WOW! Me and my VH fanatical friends were DEVASTATED when the band split. ( 19 yr olds get devastated about stuff like that) I liked Sammy ...ok enough...on his own, but he watered down VH ...and I know he's supposed to have the "superior" vocals ...but he's boring and predictable...2 adjectives that will NEVER be said about DLR. Peace 🌹
It depends on if the daughter is 18, or 8!! (Micheal Jackson thing), people that WEREN'T around in the late 70:s and 80's just DO NOT understand where the Band Van Halen were...these guys ran the hard rock world, and their Concerts were a PARTY...not just a Concert...ive seen them, in 1980, pull chicks out of the audience, give them white T-shirts, and have a wet T-shirt Contest ON STAGE!! 1980 Atlanta...my FIRST Van Halen Concert, I was 15, and got laid afterwards by a 19 year old Woman i just met too. I loved Van Halen Concerts in the Early 80's, or the Dave years. When he LEFT...i went into depression.... almost. Dave IS very intuitive to his surroundings...at ALL times. He was, in our day what they called, Hyper active. Thats it...no drugs, or lets say, no schedule 2 Amphetamines.
Pretty sure that what we have learned, some 40 years after: What you see is what you get with Dave. There is no hidden something "underneath it all". There's nothing more to know about Dave than what we know now. He's just Dave.
@@philfrank5601I think when it comes to his fears and why his romantic relationships fail etc etc would let us into a much more remote part of whoever he really was before he determined he could be Diamond Dave. He gets close in this interview though.
Dave comes from the old school Vaudeville “showbiz” approach. He probably rolls his eyes at these guys today who act self-righteous and talk about the issues of the world like they know anything about geopolitics. It’s entertainment. It’s showbiz. He knows what he’s good at.

I can't help but think that record would have been more rock..more what I call 'Van Halen street' than what 5150 is.
gotta love Dave .
This is so cool to hear. Thank you buddy. Can tell you're a big Van Halen like myself.
Van who? Never heard of them. 😂🤘🍻
Dave had a perfect sum-up of Van Halen. “Van Halen with Sammy was love, Van Halen with David Lee Roth was lust.”
Dave was perfect for this era...VH was mighty...those 4 were magical
Wow Dave was in top form he definitely sounds stoned which is probably Dave's natural habitat and it's nice to know Dave was still an armchair philosopher back in 85 I was under the impression it took him some time to grow into that, great interview.
Glad you enjoyed it! I thought it's a pretty entertaining conversation more than interview. 🍻
Why does he sound stoned to you? His voice isn’t drawling, nor is it relaxed or speedy. He sounds sober to me.
christopherbell4543 sounds the opposite of stoned to me
5150 with Dave is so weird to think about. But if 1984 was gonna be his last, I’m glad it was. that one
One of the smartest guys around
That line about waking up alone and a busy signal on the phone is pretty revealing. it goes back to how Dave got in the band and his very first meeting with the brothers. It's strange to hear him sound that insecure but it explains EVERYTHING about his departure. When he left, his star was at it's highest point and to me, that was WHY he left, he felt like he'd drawn enough gravitas to pull off a successful solo career and in some measure, he was correct. If he'd known the grunge era was JUST around the corner, he might not have done it.
That's a pretty insightful assessment. I never really thought about any "what ifs", but you're right about sticking together in the face of grunge.
@@burningdaylightsHe left in 1985. Grunge took off in 1991.
just like Peter Cetera, but Chicago died with Terry Kath @@MrOctober44
@@MrOctober44
It exploded in 1991 but the ripples were felt in late 1989 as bands like Alice in Chains and others were already on the scene in and around Seattle.
I thought it was pretty good too. I think it was pretty close to how a real conversation would go with the man. Thanks for being a subscriber! 🍻🤘
You bet buddy @@TheTapesArchive. Thanks for the excellent videos. 🙂
Dave was great in little bite size chunks…custom built for MTV back in the day. Had a solid 10 year run. Got a little weird after that but what the hell we still luv ya Dave!
Have your Machine call my machine…he used that line in Showtime….inspiration from everywhere that’s why you have to live to create
Great catch!! 🤘
Cant imagine being stuck on a tour bus with him amazing the band lasted as long as it did
It really is a miracle, especially when you think of just how opposite Ed & Dave were.
He recently said he's never had a serious friend or girlfriend. He said he entertains himself.
Good stuff, thx!
Dave was deep.
Van Halen we’re our rock heroes who made it super big and then they couldn’t sustain it, was do disappointing when the wheels came off
Dave is awesome
Dave is a genius creatively as was Eddie Roth left because of control and Ed's recording studio the sad thing is it took too long to get back together the time and creativity had passed.
Makes me wish DLR would have done 5150 before his departure...glad we got Eat em and Smile & Skyscraper as worthy consulations..thanks for the interview! 😀👍
I'm so thankful for Eat em and Smile. 🤘
Can't imagine DLR singing Sammy's songs
Take a drink every time Dave laughs at his own joke.
Somehow I just found this channel, I love it
amazing interview! But something is odd with editing. It’s sped up a tad too much, compressed. It sounds more like an AI version of Dave, than actually Dave
Right on! Its him. What’s you're hearing is because the cassette was 40 years old. 🍻
Diamond Dave did an interview with Drew and Mike on 101.1 The Wriff that was amazing. He is the best entertainer in the world!
This Detroiter misses Drew & Mike in the mornings. The airwaves lost a lot when you guys left.
RIP Mike!
Thats called SPINNING GOLD to all you kats and kittens who arent aware! 🤘
Correction: He was actually 30 y.o. at time of this interview. His DOB is 10/10/54.
For 1985, that was probably the best freestyle rap i've heard, the fact that I wasn't supposed to hear that in 2023
Almost 40 years it say on a cassette tape and no one heard it.
Excellent!
Dave said on jho Rogan every 2nd song of Sammys uses the word (love) mine uses words like hot.
Roth rapping is so Dave
Listen to his pod cast .the man is smart ,funny, extremely smart and very adventurous. Fantastic story teller 😊❤
I love Dave so much ❤
Gotta love him!❤😂
Yes I heard Dave make 2 direct and deliberate descriptions of VHagar , and 1 direct and deliberate descriptions of DLR , and 1 by Alex toward Dave , and I thought all 4 were true , accurate and even that ol thing that the band had all throughout the years , regardless if they were together or taking shots at the other side when they were apart .
About it at the time Dave said ,,,,,,,
“” You know , Van Halen getting back together with Hagar is like looking at and admiring a beautiful drop dead gorgeous woman walking the runway at a fashion show! But the it’s like she opens her mouth to talk and she’s got the worst teeth you’ve ever seen !
Cool Stuff fm Diamond Dave😎🤘
Awesome stuff!
He is always alone in Pasadena. Seen him around Pasadena for 40 years. He oesn't use lights at night in his home.
why is the tape sped up? DLR is almost a chipmunk... You can slow this down in an audio editor
I like Dave.
This channel is great. 👍🏻
His laugh is infectious. 😅
He seems more open and normal in this interview then his usual jokey style that he does and it's a little odd that she's calling it like he's not being that way.
Sam came in and did a great job creating mall crowd/soccer mom music. He threw a party, DLR is the party !!

I either read or heard that interview before. Am I the only one?
I can guarantee you never heard this interview before. But maybe you read the article that was made from the interview?
Then yes, it must have been I read the article. Thanks Alan!!!@@TheTapesArchive
Great video! The only thing that I'll say is that he would be 30 years old in December 1984, not 31.
group laughing means dave´s laughing about his own jokes
Congratulations 🎆
I wish Dave had more of an ego and wasn't so insecure.
He’s actually a lot brighter than I originally thought he was
Oh yeah Dave is highly intelligent and very very insightful .like I've said many times had he not been a singer in a Rock Band he could have been a philosopher .but wouldn't have wanted to cause they don't get enough attention
Fortunately for him he was a singer in a rock band since that's more lucrative than being a philosopher.😂 @@johnhagan582

Interesting that he didn’t want to talk about his film for Crazy From The Heat.
He says something about being offered a low-budget movie deal. I think that's what he was referencing.
Diomand Dave never disappoints. Best singer ever? Nope. The guy I wanted to grow up to be circa 1984? Yup.
Enough BS about his vocals. Without DLR ...it's very plausible EVH wouldn't have gotten the well deserved accolades and legend status. Dave brought the WOW!
Me and my VH fanatical friends were DEVASTATED when the band split. ( 19 yr olds get devastated about stuff like that)
I liked Sammy ...ok enough...on his own, but he watered down VH ...and I know he's supposed to have the "superior" vocals ...but he's boring and predictable...2 adjectives that will NEVER be said about DLR.
Dave did mountains of cocaine.
All of van Halen did.
As well as almost every 80s rock star.

I can only listen to DLR's hipster babble for a few minutes and then I need a break. Hats off to the Van Halen brothers.
She was onto fact he has his fake public act and she will never really know him. She is good
Pretty sure that what we have learned, some 40 years after: What you see is what you get with Dave.
