Your thoughts on cutting or punching the leather pads. I think I could do it, I saw the knife you did for Andy M. I think I will find one and give it a try.
Great job and it looks terrific. I have restored a couple of Estwing hammers and they are very satisfying to do. I wrote the company to buy stickers and they were kind to send me some. The water decals are nice. Thanks for sharing.
That is a thing of beauty. Love Estwing tools. My Dad managed a tool shop a long long time ago and I used to go to work with him At the weekend and school holidays. Unpacking the delivery of estwing hammers and axes was always a favourite thing to do. Nice work and it brings back a lot of memories
The hammer looks better than new. So much easier to restore when all the leather is good, just the clear coat needing to be removed. I recall when you had to replace the leather in a previous restoration. That was a lot of work. Nice touch with the waterslide decal. Dave.
Great tribute to estwing. My favorite hammers especially if you're talking looks. I can't imagine it looked that nice coming out of the factory. Nice work. Liked how you added the "watch out".😂
That looks really nice. My brother worked at estwing back in the 50s. You did a great job on that one. Scout crafter would be proud of that one. Have a great day...👍❤...
Looks brand new Magdad Nice!.... I just cleaned my 20oz and 16oz yesterday morning before I started using them.. nothing like yours though.... good stuff! Always enjoy the history bits you add..thanks
You are quite a craftsman. I'm a 76 year old female and I love to restore old tools. I've learned a lot from you and Scoutcrafter. Keep sharing the great videos!
That hammer reminds me of a claw hammer my dad had when I was a kid. Unfortunately I have three older brothers and they lost it before a move to a new house. They did that to a lot of his tools. They were the bane of his toolbox. I know for a fact that he loved that hammer and used it on his job. They paid the price for that loss for about a year. They were not allowed to use his tool for that whole year. It was a very comfortable hammer to use. You made it look brand new again. Great work.
Thanks Gayle! I wish I had kept more of my father's tools. I was pretty young when he died and I didn't have the appreciation for vintage stuff like I do now.
M.D. That turned out beautiful...Mr. Estwing would have been proud... I'd hate to think how bad I would have probably messed up that hammer..Well M.D. you take care my friend and God Bless....
I watch all your videos, because they are so interesting. My original interest was seeing which gun solvents cleaned the metal best. I was also interested in which lubes and CLPs protected best. Then I morphed into admiring screw drivers and hammers as works of art! What a great hobby you have! Can’t wait for the next video. Thanks!
WOW!!! Another VERY AWESOME "Resto." here, "Magdad!!" Let me tell ya, you really awed me with that final reveal!! I figured that you were going to do something more to that handle, and I wondered if you were going to do something to replace that label, after you had to sand it off. Even so, when you revealed your finished work, I actually gasped out loud and said: "WOW!!" out loud as well!!! 😊 What a FANTASTIC job!! I'll bet this hammer may look even better now, than when it was new!! 🙂 Watching what you did with this hammer makes me wish I was back home in WV. right now, and that I had enough money to restore the "Stacked Leather" handle on my Dad's old hunting knife, which I'd say is about the same vintage, as this hammer!! The only difference is, I would have to buy a new batch of those leather rings first, as the ones on Dad's knife began to badly deteriorate a long time ago, and as a result; Dad chose to wrap it up with brown electrical tape! At least I now know that I can use the same polyethylene spray on my Dad's knife handle that you used here; should the new stacked leather need an additional sheen put on it!! 🙂 Take Care & I'll be anxiously watching for the video of your next "resto" project!! Ron Abilene, TX.
I really enjoyed this video. Estwing tools are high quality, made in USA products, and I think the company is still owned by the Estwing family. I love their great tools. Decades ago Estwing sold two-tool sets which included a hatchet and claw hammer. I still have my set which has been useful for many years. Your ball pein hammer turned out beautifully. I have the same deteriorated finish on the leather that you repaired. Your work turned out great, so I'm glad their is such an effective solution. Happy 100th anniversary to Estwing. Keep on going.
Wow! That's an incredible transformation. Nice job Magdad. I didn't even know Estwing made stacked leather ball peen hammers. I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for one.....or four 😂
Magdad, outstanding restoration. It looks brand new and is credit to you. I have done several estwing restorations, the use of the conditioning belts is new to me, so huge thankyou on that tip!

Well done Magdad, I’ve restored a few Estwing hammers but I haven’t come across a ball pein yet. They all have the date they were manufactured on the shaft under the leather. I just love them and you did a great job. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

Nice job, Magdad! I have an Estwing sledge hammer and my friends framing hammer to restore. I have never seen a ball pien version before. THAT is the type of hammer I use the most.
Terrific job! I found this exact hammer last week at an antique store, in similar condition. Yours looks better than new! Going to do a lesser degree of finish and use neatsfoot oil on the leather for a user in my shop...
I have an Estwing hammer and really appreciate the leather handle. Your 12 ounce hammer looks like my new one. The decal also helps it look new, I imagine that you coated it again on the handle to protect it.
Hey MagDad, I tried those conditioning belts you recommended on a prior video, but I had to return them because they wouldn't fit my 1X30 belt sander. Shame! Are there any small wire wheels where they don't fling out? Are the vintage dremel ones better than the modern ones?
I had to make some modifications to my machine in order to run the thicket conditioning belts. I like the plastic abrasive bristle wheels as a replacement for the wire wheels.
I hope your project is a success! I put 5 coats of semi-gloss urethane on the handle, sanding with 320 in between. I thought it was too glossy after the last coat, so I buffed it with 0000 steel wool and waxed it.
