My Favourite Episode so Far - DIY Repair - Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

  • Part 54 of this never ending series. In this one I tackle the seat and face a dilemma on whether to try and age it or have it look brand new (but painted).
I also do more work on the bodywork. This ends up being my favourite episode to date.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 54 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Well done!! I gave you zero chance of a reasonable repair without painting all the leather. You are absolutely correct, the aging must be there.

I found your channel because I was looking for gaming console/controller fixes. But you do so much more than that. You mentioned the Rolls Royce restoration in a couple of your 'trying to fix' videos, so I thought I'd have a look. Brilliant! I just binged all 55 videos and now I'm eagerly awaiting future episodes. I love that you're a DIY jack of all trades, that you have long videos showing the whole fix and that you show your mistakes. I always used to skip through the ads but I now force myself to sit through the whole thing so that you get paid a little for all your work. You've taught me a lot and shown me some lovely old tech that deserves saving from landfill. Thanks, Vince!

I was half way through typing a huge rant.... then I got to the bit where you showed the old seat and I think it clicked for you, just in case though.... WTH are you talking about Vince? Compared to how this thing started everything you've done has made it better, ignoring the mechanical stuff (cause as you said, that's mostly invisible) you've cleaned everything up (except the forever foaming green stain on the back carpet 🤣), fixed the foggy headlights, fixed the wonky trim, fixed the emblem, as you saw yourself, all the seats and interior trims are way better, the dash works fully, you've fixed all the interior lights, re-varnished all the doors and I know there's other stuff I'm forgetting. Don't get yourself down dude and pardon my french but f**k the haters, everyone always knows better when they're not the ones paying for it, you've done an amazing job for someone doing it for this first time and I'm enjoying every video on this project.

To get a more glossy finish the lacquer (clear coat) needs wet sanded to remove the orange peel & then to remove the sanding marks machine polish with buffing compound to give a mirror like finish.
You just need to have applied enough lacquer as if its thin you will burn through to the base coat and have to start over. The edges of panels and body lines will have less paint and lacquer on them so are easier to burn through so more caution is required in these areas.
Start with some p1000 and you will see all the high and low spots after you dry the panel, the highs will be dull as you have scratched them with the wet & dry but the lows will still be glossy as they have not been touched by the wet & dry.
I would do all my wet sanding by hand and not machine as you have more control which is needed as it is very easy to burn through.
You MUST wipe the water off the panel regularly with a dry cloth or squeegee to see your progress as the water hides the lows & the highs.
Keep sanding until you achieve a uniform finish that is flat (dull) then a quick go over with some p2000 and then buff to a shine with buffing compound. You can use your DA but a rotary is faster with a wool mop but also way more aggressive and again easier to burn through the lacquer.
I would not bother going up to p3000, p2000 is more than enough as you can easily remove p2000 scratches with buffing compound.
The Farecla compounds you have are more than up to the job, many body shops use those products on a daily basis.

Great video Vince. As you said it’s not about sending seats off for upholstery , car off for paint. It’s about you doing the best you can with stuff everyone has access to , with perseverance, patience and practice.
Don’t get me wrong you have me shouting at the screen when you first started bodywork attacking the car with 40 grit paper , but it’s come on sooo far since then.

That seat repair was absolutely brilliant. I didn't know there were such products as leather filler. I have been doing my own repairs on cars for over 40 years. The word you were searching for is 'Patina'. Old cars should have an honest patina. A car is only 'new' once. Matching a Rolls Royce finish, is a bit of a tall order. As long as the car is complete, without too many dents and scuffs, it shows it is honest. If it were 'pristine', you would be afraid to go out in it, or drive it. I hate that some classics are just shut in a museum. They need to be enjoyed and driven. My only query, would be how long lasting is that leather repair?. If you get more than 5 years out of it, it will be brilliant. Ignore the haters.

Vince, there are no shortcuts for nice looking paint. It takes a LOT of time and money to do it right. Priority one is getting it to run and stop well (presumably this is the primary point of an MOT). Let the outside look a little tatty and make the inside where you sit as nice as possible. Then you feel good when sitting in it and driving AND you don't have to worry about parking lot dings, small scratches, etc! The seat repair looks perfectly respectable!

Hi Vince, I just wanted to thank you for creating all of these RR videos. I’ve been watching them since the beginning but fell off for a bit. I came back to watch the last 30 or so episodes during a really stressful and jam packed time at work recently. They have reduced my stress a ton. It has been amazing to watch this car transform. Looks truly incredible. I know very little about restoring a car so you’re a pro in my eyes😅. Glad you came out unscathed from working on the suspension spring, those were genuinely tense episodes. Anyway, thanks again. Looking forward to seeing what comes next for the RR. Also can’t wait to get an Ayelsbury duck sticker to plaster on my own car window🪿 Godspeed from Indiana in the USA!

  • @ajburdett882
    @ajburdett882 3 місяці тому

You're right in that the base coat provides the colour and the top coat is where the shine is coming from, but one thing that really affects the shine is how flat the finish of the base coat is. This is why the prep is so important with painting - removing any and all imperfections in the paint with filler and primer prior to putting the base coat on, and then removing imperfections in that.
If the surface isn't quite perfect, if it has little pits or orange peel or marks, then this will reflect the light unevenly when the top coat is on and make it look more dull than it is. It won't be worth just getting a respray shop just to do the topcoat, you may as well get them to do the whole thing, that's how you're going to get the best possible finish
Regardless though you've done a great job with a spray can! I wouldn't be disappointed by that at all!

I doubt any shop would put a top coat of clear over that due to compatibility issues between the 2 different paints. If you want to buff the clear, I would think you will need at least 6 coats using a spray can. 3 coats are minimum when using HVLP 2K clears. I would recommend leaving that clear cure for 2 weeks, then try using a rotary polisher with wool pad and fine compound then polish to make it shine more.

Lovely job on those seats. It's going to feel good when you drive out of that garage with an MOT!

100% agree with you on the seats Vince, yes you can see the repair but they look honest....dont take any notice of the hate, you are doing the best you can and i think your doing an excellent job. If it wasn't for you god knows what the future of the rolls would have been

I personally think you did an amazing job! It looks like if the seat simply never had a hole yet was used naturally like the rest of the seats.

So, I'm really looking forward to you doing an MIT. Could you have a professional auctioneer estimate the value of the cheapest Rolls-Royce in the UK after the MIT? It's quite challenging to estimate because you're aware of everything that's wrong with it, but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. The car currently exudes an honest and positive spirit. I believe it would make for a great finale of my favorite UA-cam series so far! And congratulations on achieving the finish you wanted!

Tremendous outcome! Looks more than respectable, you're an artist. I've tried mixing paint in the past and you're right, it's like going down a rabbit hole, after a while of staring at countless shades, the mind looses it's ability to discriminate and you lose your reference colour. Looking forward to seeing drone footage of this majestic barge wafting down the road.👍🙏

Never worry about what the haters say about YOUR car.
There's always someone who would've hated it even if RR had done a full nut and bolt resto on it.
You've done so much so well for a non professional.
We're all waiting for that day you drive away with a pass M.O.T. certificate!

I have to admit that I'm not a Rolls Royce fan, although I am certainly enjoying these videos. The way you've repaired the seat and managed to keep the character that only a bit of "wear and tear" gives to leather over years of use, is brilliant 👍🏼
Could have sworn that I had subscribed to your channel, but just noticed that I hadn't. Subscribed now though.

Vince, look at the original photos and what it looks like now. Your are chasing perfection, stop it and enjoy the motor, it looks fine and presentable remember you don't see the outside when your driving. Good job.
