When you go over by $500 a month that’s actually pretty fixable. I would look at the last 6 months and how much they spent on each category of their budget and she’s where the over spending is happening. Most people could save by cutting coffee, fast food, convenience foods, streaming services, and a few other luxuries. Also if they have 4 kids they should have a big garage sale with all that baby and toddler stuff as their youngest outgrows it all. I just made $1000 having a big garage sale. That’s baby step #1 right there.

I hear you but like mentioned they have 4 kids. They decided to have that many kids but it is still a sucky situation for the family. Cutting costs is a perfectly reasonable thing but with 6 people to clothe and feed 100k can still make things tight. One or both can pick up side gigs to knock it out and I don't always agree with them about selling cars because if you get something different and cheap it's a roll of the dice, they just need to hammer out these debts and getting rid of the car payment is big.

With younger people it sometimes takes a while. I know for my wife and I it did but thankfully we’re on the other side of that.
I’d definitely say if it’s possible to sell or trade the car to something paid off or at the very least a significantly lower payment definitely look at that.
I know this opinion may not be popular but IF they can be disciplined and not go back to credit cards it might be worth looking at a debt consolidation loan, even a small one to pay off some of the smaller cards. I did something like this against my retirement which isn’t the best idea but I was able to pay off most of my credit card debt and it was pushed down into a smaller time frame and saving money each month. But you have to get to the point where you aren’t using the cards anymore. That’s the hard part though.

Yes, the credit card debt needs their immediate attention. My guess? With four kids, their daycare expense is eating up a significant portion of their income. - probably in the $25 - 30k range. Daycare is incredibly expensive nowadays.
So yes, they need to do a detailed budget to figure out exactly where all their money is going. That is a good first step. They didn't delve into the type of construction work that the husband does, but also yes, he can tap into that skill set to earn extra money. In the end, once they do the budget and identify where their money is going, they will most like determine that they do not have to stop their 401k investing, perhaps back it down to the company match.

4 kids wouldn't be a problem if they didn't have all the debt. The credit card debt alone is a killer. They're obviously maxed out. So they play the game of making minimal payments, but turn right around to max it out again.
Take a hit on the credit score, and stop all payments on the cards except 1. Cut costs, don't go crazy at christmas, and throw everything you can at that one card. Then move on to the next one. Use all that child tax credit to your advantage come tax season, and put it towards the remaining cards. Then tackle the car payments, then student loans. It can be done within two years on the salary they make, and cutting all unnecessary expenses.

      I agree and disagree.
Agree 4 kids might not be a problem if they fix up their credit cards an debt but factually you can't say that 4 kids won't cost more than say two kids. Basic math and common sense.
THINK people before you have kids!!

    • @atrain132

Kids grow like weeds meaning constant new clothes, constant diapers, constant food, constant car seats, kid beds/gates/storage, constant replacing things they broke, constant medications, constant doctor visits, everything...kids are super expensive.
