They shut it down due to the Nascar dominance. The Nascar drivers had such an advantage over the other types of racers. For the simple fact that they raced on Nascar tracks. With Nascar spec cars. IndyCar and the other series that participated didn't have a chance.
Jackie Ickxx came up and had a look at 4th position - inside at turn 1 - and this on lap 4 - never having done anymore than look at the old Monza banking, not drive on it
big time. But come to think of it, if you guys watch old nascar races circa 1977 to 82, you hear a mix of this v6 sound and the 358 nascar v8. I know they never mixed cup and busch cars together or did they?
R.D. STAKXXX LLC. Almes No they didn’t mix the cars. You had the option between the V6 and V8 engine in the Busch series back then. Just like you could choose between Hoosier and Goodyear tires way back when
They were V8. Headers had more to do with the sound and the power was limited to even it out and not give the NASCAR guys an advantage. Gunner did eventually die of cancer.
A.J. tells it like it IS. Racers of EVERY stripe are vanilla corporate butt-kissers these days. Put a helmet on 'em, you can't tell the difference in ANY of them.
That’s one of the primary reasons for NASCAR’s decline. Bunch of suit models that receive enough sensitivity training so they don’t offend anyone or anything.
He came back next year but didn't finish the last race and came back in 85 leading daytona but crash on that final lap in the famous finish and finish strong, and he last raced in 89 finishing 7 or 9 I think doing better than Richard petty that same year coming back to iroc finishing last in the points standings a bust
Rather see just NASCAR drivers only. The international drivers are a bring down. Now there isn't much interest in just the big time drivers in specialty races.
Lol! That doesn't make sense. You already have NASCAR drivers only in NASCAR! Then you would have to have changed the name to NROC (NASCAR Race of Champions). IROC had to invite international drivers to live up to the name. The whole concept was to bring in the best from around the world, not just NASCAR. IROC died because everybody got tired of the IROC schedule favoring NASCAR. Now with today's modern ROC it's all about the driving and not the car and the NASCAR boys don't fare so well.
And so good to hear the Scottish accent of the great Jackie Stewart.
When I was a kid my brother got a brand new Iroc Z-28 Camaro. I had no idea it was based on the cars in this series back then.
"And Richard Petty is being loaded into the ambulance" ... while they're putting Richard in the back of Scooby Doobie Doo's Mystery Machine.
Music from 'Rocky' during the introductions... pretty sweet.
I wish they'd bring back this series.
Drew Sitten Drew you’re reading my mind.IROC would be awesome!!
I wish they would as well. Do any of you know why they ended the series?

@@billyt.7387 Unser did look good... Until Dale turned him... Lol.
I forgot what year that was but it was an awesome series.
American racing needs IROC racing once again.
Yep... in THESE cars...lol
Those wreck shots from a half mile away are so informative.
This quality should be on the 1978 Daytona 500.
Sad to think Nilsson's illness led to his demise
it's bad he never had a full recovery witch stinks
The Rocky Theme?! Nice.
thank you for the video.
I love listening to Jackie Stewart talking about this style of racing after coming from F1.
Jackie Stuart is music.
I love those cars
Darrell Waltrip showing everybody what a sassy little arrogant Dandy he was back in the day🙄🤣
Yeah his comments were out of line about Unser crashing. What a condescending dick.
This is excellent
So good!
All commentators should be former drivers, with the only exception being Allen Bestwick & That other guy

Wondering what ever happened to those old racecars ?
Did they crush them ??
The Porsches were bagged because they were always breaking g down...

DEFINATELY SOUND LIKE THEY WERE USING V6 ENGINES
superkart66 That's what I was thinking. They sounded like the old NASCAR Busch Series Cars when they were V6 engines
big time. But come to think of it, if you guys watch old nascar races circa 1977 to 82, you hear a mix of this v6 sound and the 358 nascar v8. I know they never mixed cup and busch cars together or did they?

Definitely using 180 degree headers.
It always shocked me to see the F1 driver go straight to the back in the IROC races 🙄
Richard was winless in this series.
Not taking anything from Richard, but in a car equal to everybody else he isn't quite as good....now Dale on the other hand.....

Does anyone know top speed reached at Daytona in these cars?
I calculated 166.667 mph.
speed=distance/time.
I timed a few laps which averaged 54 seconds.
2.5 miles/54 seconds=166.667 mph.

Good to see Chrissy Conomackie. Class act
Are you kidding me?
Look at those cars.
Their heads are practically sticking out of the cars going just as fast as they are today.
Real racing.
