Friends, just a heads up! We are several days ahead in real time so no need to add even more confusion here with additional plaster mix recommendations. Likely by the time you watch this we've already got it figured out 😁
The family loves watching and so do I! However, I think I may have a bit of helpful advice. I've been doing stucco and other mixes for years (Contractor) and I think I can explain what's going on. First, the Portland is effective in just about anything over 8 to 1.The two things that are currently working against you, are that the layers are far too thin and, you're overworking them. You have Portland in the mix so, think stucco not Cobb. Unfortunately, more Portland is always better (just more expensive). Yes- more sand and less clay will help with lessen the cracking too. The two elements end up fighting one another for moisture dominance (one wants to dry quickly, the other wants to maintain moisture as long as it can). A slightly dryer "peanut-butter like" consistency is best for sticking, and drive it in to the wall at least 3/8" to 1/2" thick, smooth it out , and then leave it alone. Thicker layers (with the fiber added too) tend not to crack as much. Use a loaded stucco-hawk to move as much onto the wall as you can, as quickly as you can. It's going to be a little tougher because the scratch coat may be a little too smooth but, it can be done. If you overwork cement in any form, it will crack and fall off. You have to allow it time to gain a mechanical and chemical bond instead of working it free before it's done. It's either that or blow that stucco on with a drywall hopper and call it good! Don't feel down- Ya'll are doing a great job. We're all behind you!
Remember Tiny Shiny family are here for ya! Y’all are doing such great work- also helping others by teaching, learning and yes errors. When the project comes to completion you’ll totally forget about the issues along the way! I loved watching you cook your sandwiches. Don’t stress the small stuff… no one is watching for perfection.
God love you Ashley. Your determination to find the plaster you are satisfied with would try most people’s patience. I look forward to these videos daily. Always brings a smile.
The green dream project was Having the same problem. They are using horse, dog hair and ground egg shells. Interesting to watch both of you work through your challenges.
Ashley, we will all be here in 37 years when you get that perfect plaster mix figured out! Lol! Don’t lose heart, you got this and you are THE PLASTER MASTER!! ❤️
I appreciate that you are sticking it out, you WILL find the right mix for YOU. I enjoy watching the process. Remember you are finding the correct mix for the house at the same time you find it for this project. Ashley it is a positive, you have found alot of the ones that don't work. God bless
Total dedication there Ashley and Jax, sifting poop is true plaster mastery! 💪💪 Also, 🎶Mushroom on a stump🎶 is everything!!! It now lives rent free in my head, and I'm LIVING! Don't loose faith Ashley! 💚💚💚
Trial, error, perseverance, has always been the key to success historically speaking. Your vision and perseverance are clearly seen, and including your work ethic success will happen. A loser fails because they have no vision, perserverance and don't care. You both are WINNERS, and amazing down to earth humans that we love. You all are in our prayers for continued health, blessings and success ! Hang in there, life is worth the effort !
It might be figured out already. but, I do think that the 8-to1 mix is the right one. It's an controlled environment that is needed. The cracks comes from it drying to fast. Build a tent with some wood and a tarp (will protect against rain too). make sure the wall is not warm by the sun before putting on the plaster (make sure the wall is in the tent before to cool down). Apply the plaster inside the tent. Wait 24h and move the tent to the next section.
Ashley don’t get down on yourself! You are one of the hardest working people I have ever seen! I know you will get it right, just know we out here are with you and your family.
I just want to say I am proud that you guys are continuously problem-solving. Most people would have given up by now. Super proud of you! Keep going. :)
You are teaching us persistence and determination- you have dream of how it will look and you will make it happen and look what you/we’ve learned about how you are going to do your house! ❤️❤️❤️
You can't succeed without failing, it's not a negative it's an important part of moving forward (even though it always feels like a kick to the gut). You are doing fab, and inspiring others.
The smile on your husbands face is so full of love and support. His smile says a thousand and one words with just a smile. He is right there with you, y’all are so blessed! It will happen, just let your frustration fuel your desire! Never give up, never give in!❤️⚓️❤️
There are no such things as mistakes, just lessons learned! I love, love, love how you two work together and support each other! Your sarcastic banter is so fun! You have to laugh and keep it light! I’ve said this before, but as a Midwesterner, I find this type of building technique fascinating! Take what you have around you and make the most of it! ❤ (Even the crappiest “stuff” can be turned into something useful…💩) See you tomorrow!! ❤❤❤
Chin up guys, you ARE plaster Masters!! I feel your frustration, but be not discouraged! I appreciate that you are sharing everything you are going through with us. My family will be following in your footsteps in the very near future. I learn so much from you. I am so excited to see which mix will be The ONE! You got this tiny shiny family! 💪❤
Jax is becoming a very handsome young man. He is losing the little boy look. All of your children are a wonderful reflection of being loved and encouraged to find their talents and interest. They also know how to work as a team to get things done. Good parenting!
Welllll.. I gotta say... I have learned SO much about soils and mud formulas . and all that goes into making these different earthen structures. I had no idea how complex it could all be... so thanks for the education. Fascinating stuff. Don't get discouraged... the right combo is out there somewhere. May God bless your efforts.
Old timey whimey trick to help winterize stables and barns in Canada was to stick old manure in between the boards or logs. Way to go guys, love the tenacity. We believe in you. 💕🇨🇦
You can do it! What a interesting project. Ashley you have beautiful skin and you have a beautiful family. So happy I found your channel. You guys rock!
I'm so sorry about all the frustration! You got this though!!! By the time you are finished you will truly be an expert on your soil and what works best. Trial and error can really be a bummer BUT you are paving the way for others down the line to learn from your mistakes. Thank you for sharing those mistakes with us. Thank you for sharing your crowded kitchen with us. Being real makes you all the more endearing. PS ...Nine Nine is the absolute best dog ever! PSS... You're still The Plaster Master Ashley! 💕💕💕
That mushroom farm would make a good Tiny Shiny Tuesday edition. Don’t worry, the time spent on this is par for the course for your house. You’ll thank yourselves later.
Ashley, you've got to get a sponge float. After the plaster has dried so it's somewhat firm, go over it with a sponge float and those small cracks will disappear. Just don't use too much water when you sponge float it
Also, might the time of year be a big factor? I don't know what time of year you did that first East wall. But - was it Summertime? Was it in the shade when you applied it? Clearly, I'm no desert expert. Altho... I DO live in Central Texas, and THIS YEAR the 112°F temps pretty much FEELS LIKE the desert! And I know (as y'all do too) the super hot temperatures affect EVERYTHING! When I was plastering the interior of my house, in the a/c - sooo it wasn't even hot, but when I got impatient and opened the doors to bring in hot air so it would dry faster, that's when it cracked. By plaster standards, I was layering pretty thick, if that helps at all. Altho, I'm probably just muddying the waters for you... (O! A plaster pun!) Sorry, just brainstorming...
I believe that you will have greater success if you do this when the daytime Temps drop below the 90's, like starting in September through early November. All earth mixes crack in high and freezing Temps.
When we plastered our mud brick house we used a secret mix into the slurry that included large amounts of PVA glue in it - it worked beautifully - not natural but it worked.
Ashley, I want to cry for you, hot sun, patient hard work, but still missing the mark. I wouldn't be surprised if you shed a tear. I won't cry, though, because I know y'all will figure it out. I pray y'all figure it out & are happy with the results‼️🙏🏼‼️
Hang in there I am confident you will get and then your solution can help many others trouble shoot their situation. You all do some mighty fine work, your skill's are increasing with the knowledge you have gained this far. Don't get down except the challenge and have faith the out come will be excellent !
Those mushroom tacos looked so good! They were really pretty also! And your kitchen looked fine! That is what kitchens look like for people who actually prepare food....they look busy.
To answer your question, yes you will find the right mix! 😉 As frustrating as it may seem, please remember that when working with mother nature, she has her own unique nuances which you are currently experiencing. Keep your heads up and keep looking for what works for your unique construction materials. As you pointed out, your dirt is changing as your pit changes. Thus so will your mixtures. Thank you for sharing your experiences and keep chugging along cuz you will succeed!!! 🤠
You are in the old west. Hot makes cracks in everything! Leave it be. You can use that wall as the experimental challenges and later work will be better. So many new home builders try to get the crack looks in their walls. Just think, you have mastered that! It looks marvelous darling!
It is going to be alright! You guys will find the right perfect mixture 🙏🏽🙌🏽❤️♥️ I guess the garden will sprout next spring 🙏🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 You guys are doing great!! It is a big building, so remember you are doing good!
I know you have to use a concrete primer when you want to put two concretes together. I also know that if your concrete drys to fast it will crack. May a little more water in your mix and try putting it on super early in the morning. Maybe try stopping when the temp hits 90 degrees. I'm just an old lady that worked for Home Depot for 20 years and my Pro's would always teach me stuff. But these are just ideas 💡. By the way I TOTALLY LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I love to watch the two of you ❤️. Your personalities are so funny and cute. I can see you guys are very hard working 💪 people. I do hope you figure it out soon.
When I was 16 something (I am now 77) I was a "solid plasterers labourer" and I used a "plasticiser" called "A.E.A."? which limited expansion & shrinkage by restricting water uptake (absorption, and then less cracks when the water evaporated)... It went on easy - a bit less than half an inch thick and did not shrink and leave cracks !!! and was WATERPROOF - The other name for the "plasticiser" when I was yelled at "for adding too much FLUFF".... so as plasterers they used "fine sharp sand" (Not rounded river sand!) (well worn silt because it does not bind - it just slides and glides - slumping to the ground and falling off/down)... I hope this helps in your quest for the perfect mix to give a polished waterproof permanent sealing plaster... Best wishes in your endeavours, Brian (or is it Brain?)
Don't worry Ashley you got this. What I'd try putting it on thicker but I've haven't done it yet. I've only stuccoed traditional houses so far. But I am a sculpture. No matter what just sit back when you feel stressed, have a cold adult beverage off your choice and you'll feel a bit better.
💥 THIS WAS NOT A NEGATIVE VIDEO!! And YOU, sweet momma are SO a Master Plasterer‼️ Oh YEAH ‼️ Yes you are‼️ Your walls look so freaking good. And your whole family is amazing. No joke!! Luvs Ya! 🌵
Thanks for sharing your frustrations with us. Makes us struggling with our builds feel like we are all part of this struggle together. It might be the struggle bus somedays, as long as I get to do the driving then I'm happy. 8)
I would have called a plaster company by now and had them come out and in one day, poof... done. Lol. I admire your tenacity and perseverance. Something I don't have.
I’ve been watching you guys probably since the begging of you guys build. I’m sure you guy still have alot more shifting. Sound like you guys would benefit with a hand operated trommel. Easy and inexpensive to make
Great video and you will get it. No, you HAVE got it and I can’t wait to see!!! You are already the Plaster Master, aren’t you?!? Do you have a crown? A lapel pin?
You’re doing very well. I feel your frustration. You will get it( if you haven’t already😉) and when you do…watch how quickly you have the chickens in their forever home 💞
Another hurdle to get over try what works and work with it. I would think more clay to bond things to gather and fiber? Like you should stick to what works. I like watching what you do look like loads of fun keep up the great work I I enjoy the music on the videos. Some cracks could give the walls character. Stick in there Ashley you'll get it. 🙃
Johnathan, & Ashley.... Put the dried manure through your chipper shredder first. I have a shredder on the back of my tractor and it is my go to implement. I shred hay bales with it, left overs from the flower garden, anything that is dried.
You are courageous and are definitely a wonderful family who loves the environment. Don’t ever be defeated because this is just one tiny step in a huge process of life that you both always overcome. In the end you figure the process out. Your end projects are always fabulous because you can dream, you’re creative, you work as a family, you’re belief is for the greater good and you’re open minded. To me, this equals community and compassion in humanity and life. I have faith that no matter what you touch…the final project will be like the “Mona Lisa”! Many blessings friends and enjoy your beautiful week. ❤️
There are traditional cob builders here in the uk. I know its different country and climate but its a tradition over here. They have clay hay and manure in their mixture
Oh, Ashley, I feel your frustration.😫 Sometimes frustration is part of the creative process and when you hit on the recipe that works, think of how the more sweet that will be; that you figured it out and that you will know what the magic combo of materials is...!!🙌🙌🙌💚🤩 Hang in there❤ Also know that your extended UA-cam family understands life and is not expecting immediate success or perfection in every vlog you post. That isn't life. What I most love about you guys is that when you hit a bump or a ditch, you buckle down and look for a solution👏😍🙌🤩 Stay safe, be well and see ya tomorrow.
Might i suggest putting a sealer on afterwards to prevent it getting cracks and letting water in or maybe adding portland to it keeping it covered while ut drys will help like when they do concrete/ cement work. Maybe bringing your moisture content up some. In New Mexico they white wash the building after plastered.
Friends, just a heads up! We are several days ahead in real time so no need to add even more confusion here with additional plaster mix recommendations. Likely by the time you watch this we've already got it figured out 😁

😄perhaps mix with Dog poop ...

I think the moisture and stickiness of the manure mixture the green dream project is using would be worth trying.

At this point I just wanted to hug you all & say it will be fine!❤❤
Ashley consider the trials and experiments as all things adding to your plaster master status :D
It’s nice to see you back at it with the chicken garden!
You’re doing very well. I feel your frustration. You will get it( if you haven’t already😉) and when you do…watch how quickly you have the chickens in their forever home 💞
Don't Worry. We Will Stick Around to see it's Complettion. Aloha.
The green dream project is currently using this mixture as well, they also are using dog hair to add as fiber to hold plaster together.
Johnathan, & Ashley.... Put the dried manure through your chipper shredder first. I have a shredder on the back of my tractor and it is my go to implement. I shred hay bales with it, left overs from the flower garden, anything that is dried.
Jax! You have grown sooooo much this summer. So handsome too…….just a old grandmother here. Lol
Love to see your egg holder in the kitchen!I hope this new plaster is a success! Blessings,Laura
Know y’all are so looking forward to finishing the chicken run
People come to channels like yours and others that are simple and pure.
I live in my home. And it ain't perty!!
By the time you get to the house build you'll have it all figured out, this is just like a tough subject at plaster school 🥰
Oh my gosh, the plaster baby comment! 😂 I almost spit my drink out! So many funny things in your videos. It’s the best way to start the day!
Sending you good vibes!
There are traditional cob builders here in the uk. I know its different country and climate but its a tradition over here. They have clay hay and manure in their mixture
Oh 35min of Monday motivation 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Oh, Ashley, I feel your frustration.😫 Sometimes frustration is part of the creative process and when you hit on the recipe that works, think of how the more sweet that will be; that you figured it out and that you will know what the magic combo of materials is...!!🙌🙌🙌💚🤩 Hang in there❤ Also know that your extended UA-cam family understands life and is not expecting immediate success or perfection in every vlog you post. That isn't life. What I most love about you guys is that when you hit a bump or a ditch, you buckle down and look for a solution👏😍🙌🤩 Stay safe, be well and see ya tomorrow.
thank you so much to see the other side too. it makes me feel I can try and fail and just keep going .... We will get there😍
Might i suggest putting a sealer on afterwards to prevent it getting cracks and letting water in or maybe adding portland to it keeping it covered while ut drys will help like when they do concrete/ cement work. Maybe bringing your moisture content up some. In New Mexico they white wash the building after plastered.
You'll figure it out and we will be here watching when you do!!! See you tomorrow!
Love watching you guy. Thanks for sharing.
I was gonna say, the British Cob builders Cob buildings were that orange/pink colour. Glad you figured it out.
