Youtube Hardly Ever Points Out When You're Wrong - Episode 15, 8th April - Dublin to Belfast

  • It's the penultimate day’s train trek (where has the time gone?!) and Geoff and Vicki are heading towards Belfast, a journey up the east coast that will take them over the border into Northern Ireland for the first time. On the way we visit Malahide castle, see the sights of Balbriggan, and tick off TWO awkward Stations no less. To the North!
    All The Stations - Ireland sees Vicki and Geoff exploring the length and breadth of the 198 railway stations of Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.
    Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.c... (other stores are available...)
    To The Book! "The Railway Adventures" is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here: www.amzn.com/19...
    You can see a progress map and station count on the website: www.allthestati...

    As an Englishman with a Northern Irish partner who's ridden Translink a lot...enjoy Belfast to Derry. Especially the most unnecessarily over-the-top-ornate footbridge and wiggly river ramp at any railway station ever at my partner's hometown, Ballymoney. Crossing that on the ramp takes far longer than it needs to. (Also, if you stop there, the Joey Dunlop memorial just up the hill is lovely).
    Look out for the glorious beaches in Portrush (East Strand especially).

      And we never learnt the lessons of Ireland and England and decided to almost make a different gauge for every bloody state, in Australia.

    • @johnmccnj
      @johnmccnj 5 років тому +2

      @@bsmith2053 A lot of that is simply down to the fact that we were still seperate self-governing colonies when Railway Mania hit in the mid 1800's, and each one had their own ideas. Hindsight is 20/20 for sure, but at the time, the thought of a united "Australia" was still decades away.

    • @SteamboatWilley
      @SteamboatWilley 4 роки тому

      At least Ireland (being an island) is physically separated from Britain and the continent by the sea, so connecting the railways physically was never going to be an issue, unlike in Australia.
      However, the use of a different gauge does make things more difficult when procuring rolling stock. If they used standard gauge it would be easier and cheaper to buy trains "off the shelf" or even second hand from Britain. And they could export their own trains elsewhere.

      Some of us in other parts (cough, cough, GTA) of Canada are watching the whole spectacle that is TransLink and the SkyTrain debacle, et al. Not to shine any light on the farce that is Metrostinx here, of course.... :)

      Glider- continuous east to west Belfast bus that looks like a tram only difference from the metro buses is you pay b4 you board from a ticket machine
      Ulsterbus
      Ulsterbus goldliner services within NI and cross border services to the Republic of Ireland
      Enterprise (cross border train to and from Dublin to Belfast) www.translink.co.uk

      @@stanpatterson5033 Luckily, the TransLink ship seems to be righting itself as of late - especially since they brought in a new CEO a few years ago who used to run KC Metro, Seattle's local transit system - and after equally hearing about the situation at Metrolinx, I have an similar amount of sympathy for you guys in the GTA. Our situation still isn't great, but I get the impression that now Metrolinx is back to being worse-off than us; correct me if I'm wrong. cheers.

      @@PS-ru2ov Wow, quite the variety of different services under one umbrella, similar to our government-owned TransLink which administers 3 companies which in turn run 4 modes of transportation, with an added and controversial P3 (public-private partnership) rapid transit line. Thanks for the information about all of NI's different transit modes under your Translink, I had no idea that there are so many.

    You missed out on Dundalk. One of the nicest stations in the country and a fantastic museum literally feet from the train you were on
