@callmecatalyst As someone who got in to American Football via games like Madden, I really do love the tactical level of it. I followed it for years, became a Vikings fan, followed my local team around as a photographer (despite most UK teams being a bit rubbish). What turned me off the game though is the feeling it's just too punishing for the bodies of the players so it got to a point where I'd see a big hit and wonder how much that would reduce their quality of life by the time they retire. It was dreadful reading about Antwaan Randle El having to go down stairs sideways, yet being able to remember that it wasn't that long ago he threw a TD pass in a superbowl on a trick play. Nothing against people who still enjoy it, it's just something I personally struggle with when I watch.
Oddly, I feel like the sport that compares best with American Football as an audience is cricket - both games involve a lot of subtleties that unless you make a huge effort to understand, you'll often wonder what is actually happening with the game. If you grow up watching the game it's fine, but coming in late you have to learn so many odd little details that it's almost an exercise before you watch a game! They are both incredibly on that tactical level when you look at the whole teams though

Goldstein was born in Sutton, London, to a British Jewish family, on 17 July 1980. After graduating from school, he attended acting classes in the University of Warwick, from which he graduated with a degree in Film & Feminism(!)
Soon afterwards, Goldstein briefly relocated to Marbella, Spain, to work at a strip club which his father purchased during a "midlife crisis". As a result, Goldstein turned the experience into a stand-up comedy show called "Brett Goldstein Grew Up in A Strip Club", which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Since there was rugby league football for example, association football was the official term used for what's today known as soccer. It was never widely used in the UK though, but was adopted by the USA to differentiate their football from it.

He grew up in Sutton, a borough on the south fringe of London (beyond the Tube). He definitely has a London/British cynicism with humor thing going on, plus maybe some Jewish comedic attitude as well.

I love him but he's wrong. I loved all characters from the beginning (well, almost all) and that's due to the fact that the cast is just so brilliant you're rooting for them from the start. Even Jaimie, and especially Roy who you can see is a softy and kind hearted from the start.

American Football is kinda interesting. It's all about gaining ground to reach the goal.
-Basically, the team on Offense has 4 chances ("downs") to move the ball forward 10 Yards. It's called a "down" because the ball-holder gets tackled to the ground by Defense. The ball can be passed between multiple people on Offense.
-The team on Defense opposes their advance and tries to tackle the person with the ball and take the ball.
-If the Offense can get over the 10Y marker (yellow) within 4 tries, the tries/downs reset and they start again from that new line.
-If the Offense's ball-holder gets past the Defense without going down, he can run it to the endzone/goal for a "touch-down" (6 Points).
-If the Offense gets close to their goal but can't get through Defense, they can attempt to kick the ball through the Yellow uprights for a field goal (3 Points)
-If the Offense drops the ball while attempting to move forward (fumble), the Defense can grab the ball to gain control of it and they become the Offense.
-If the Defense prevents the ball from crossing the 10Y line within 4 downs, they gain control of the ball and become the Offense.
These are the basics that should allow you to follow the game better. There's still bunch more Rules that come up in specific situations, as well as penalties(fouls), but you learn as you watch with others.

Sounds good in theory, but you don't mention the interminable breaks between each down, cut those out and it might be mildly interesting, a bit like Rugby League with pads.
