My parents moved us here from California when I was 2 years old back in 1967. I'm a registered native American Indian of the Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa. I love this state. The 4 seasons here are beautiful. Snow here isn't what it used to be. We get a couple of bad snow storms a year now. Last year I traveled over 3000 miles by car throughout Michigan Marquette, leelanau, Traverse city, Munising, I'll never leave this state, this is my home. Fall is my favorite season here. The colors are amazing.

I have lived in Michigan my whole life. I dislike winter, but it's far better than living in hurricane areas. When it gets cold I'll take a trip to Florida in January where plane tickets are cheap due to the fact people don't leave until spring break. You are right Michigan is a nice place to live in. One thing I wish the government could figure out is a different way to melt the snow other than using salt. I hate the fact you buy an expensive vehicle and in a matter of 10 years the vehicle is a rust bucket.

After driving an hour out of Grand Rapids, you're in your boat, have your campsite set up, or are sleeping in your hammock outside your cabin.
That's still pretty true and GR now has many of the "big city" amenities.

Most houses below $300.000 are fixer uppers. They will cost you more money to fix them up after you buy one. Most older basements in Michigan leak because of the soil. So that will cost you more to fix them. Electric prices keep going up. It's cheaper to cool a house than try and heat it. And in Michigan we a lot more heating days than cooling days. Burning wood helps. Schools aren't great in the state either. They have been pouring money into Detroit schools for many many decades with no real improvement. The tax on gasoline is one of the highest in the country. So gas will cost you more than it does in Ohio or Indiana. November December and January will have you begging for just one day of sunshine. Just wanted you to know about some bad with the good.😊

Thanks for the thumbs-up (pun intended), though you neglected something about winters here: So many of the things you miss out on by being outdoors in the summer, which is GREAT btw, are still available! Wine and beer tastings, dart leagues, bowling, card tournaments, art exhibitions, music, the list is endless! And if you're a true outdoors person, the winter won't deter you... it will invigorate you! Two things DO kinda suck though, a lot of the roads, and a governor who apparently idolizes the insane liberalism of California. But if you move here, DON'T try to turn it into a copy of the place you just left; you will NOT be welcomed. And that's something you could say of almost anyplace.

I've been here in SE Michigan for 34 years now and I can see why people say it's boring. Things to do: Sleeping Bear Dune, Mackanac, Tequemanon Falls. How many times do I need to do the same thing? I'm envious of all the things people have on the West with the mountains and beaches. If you have a friend with a boat that definitely makes summers better though here in Michigan with Raftoff/Jobby etc. but yeah I've done it all here and I need something new. But everyone I know lives here so I keep staying and hating the winters every year.
edit: i'll say one thing that I still have not done though is go to the UP or upper Michigan in general and camp in the very low light pollution areas so you can see all the stars at night. That's on my bucket list here in MI but haven't gotten around to it. SE Michigan has so much light pollution it's just depressing.

I haven't been to the beaches here yet.
      As far as crime?
I can walk around Vilcabamba at night, no problem.
      Loja is safe too.
Guayaquil on the coast is questionable.

We moved to central Michigan about 8 years ago for two reasons, family - of course, but the other reason is because the housing prices were half as much as they were in Asheville, North Carolina at the time. The cost of living and housing in this area is still lower than most areas in the state. Plus, we are by both farm land and "up north" in the woods. So, food is cheaper here too!

The Michigan weather is probably to most mild in the USA. If you live in the SE corner you only get "snow storms" of 2" at a time. The local media blows the weather way out of proportion. In addition we don't get hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, severe droughts or many tornadoes.

Michigan Politics have changed, tourists have changed, taxes were pretty high. I’ve lived in Port Huron, Alma, Troy, and Holland left in 09. The winters are no where near like they were in the late 70’s and 80’s. Rural living is the only way, and that is slowly being bought up. Look at house prices in Charlevoix, Traverse Cify, Marquette and Manistique to name a few.
Chivalry is dead in the city ;)

I'll admit I'm speaking from the Metro Detroit area, but a number of arcades and other entertainment venues have opened in the area. Waterford has Zap zone, Auburn Hills has Round 1, Brighton has The Arcade..... there's a model railroad museum on Cooley Lake Road, there's the Dixieland flea market, Sea Life Aquarium which shares Great Lakes Crossing Mall with the aforementioned Round 1..... there's a lot more here than what some like to give credit for. I also visited a mall that has an indoor axe throwing range. And a good amount of that stuff can be done in the winter time.
And you're right that the food scene is more diverse than some say.
Like all places you just need to look around.
    Also Detroit style pizza FTW.

The short summers, long depressing winters, economic stall, half the populace are rude, the GD roads which will NEVER EVER be remedied. I've tired of the 4 seasons & can see myself in a friendlier warmer South like FL. Some ppl like the Fall cuz of the colors but I see it as "do you all know what's coming after the leaves fall".
