@@pacnwguy9056 Part of the brilliantly thought-out structure of "I Love Lucy" is that Lucy and Ricky are very attractive and physically in love, whereas Fred and Ethel NEVER did you-know-what; they gave that up long ago. And a lot of the plots had that as sort of a subtext, which made things funnier. Vivian was at most cute, but never beautiful, even young. It's her personality that's loveable, why people convince themselves she's gorgeous.
That was a great line the writers came up with for Fred, but truth be told, Fred should be so lucky to have such a beautiful wife. lol Ethel (Vivian) was quite pretty. Great show, great writers, great cast! ✌🏻😂👍🏻
When Vivien Vance was told William Frawley was cast as Fred Mertz, she was not happy. She said “that old man, don’t they think I could do better than that?” Well, Bill Frawley overheard that and was not happy. From then on, they really did not get along. Their acting was true testament to their professionalism.
William Frawley was already well in his 60's and Vivian was only in her 30's when they were first cast. So I could see why she didn't want to be paired with him. But to me she always looked older. As a kid I thought she was in her 50's. When they got into colored Television, she still looked the same. I think it was the black and white that made her look older.
@ - Vivien Vance was 2 years older than Lucille Ball. Vivien was 42 when I Love Lucy first aired. They wrote the roles that Lucy was early 30’s and Ethel was in her late 40’s. Desi was 34.
Such a coincidence I've been thinking about this episode lately, especially Fred's line to Ethel - "You! Here! Dressed like that! HE must be out of his mind!" It's one of my all-time favorite Lucy moments!
This scene is my favorite. And so risqué for a show that couldn’t use the word “pregnant”. I love Ethel’s negligee. And I feel Lucy was seen in hers in following episodes.
*"Lucy, did they think that we...that I...WELL!"*
Ethel's smile after that line never fails to crack me up.
And doesn't Vivian look absolutely beautiful in this scene?
@@gnirolnamlerf593 She was far from ugly, but absolutely beautiful is a stretch.

SO true! I saw a color clip of her winning an Emmy for 'I Love Lucy' in a red strapless tafeta gown and she was a KNOCKOUT! WOW! Kimberly

I love how Ethel is flattered that they think a younger would have an affair with her. 😂😂
Best line of this episode!

You could always tell by Vivian’s hairdo that she was a great believer in polity and understanding.
