LMS Stanier Mogul No. 2968 opens up through Northwood Halt | Severn Valley Railway | 08/11/2023.

The Severn Valley Railway has experienced a variety of comings and goings within the steam fleet during the last couple of years, with the Autumn of 2023 seeing the return of LMS Stanier 5MT Mogul No. 2968, which last steamed in January 2013 prior to the expiry of its boiler ticket. Now in the final stages of a heavy overhaul, and outshopped in unlined LMS black, the loco began 'light engine' test runs over SVR metals during October. Once these were completed, a series of loaded trials took place over the 6th-8th of November, utilising the line's LNER Teak stock.
The Stanier Mogul is an old favourite of mine, having struck a cord with me whilst travelling on the SVR as a youngster during December 2011, especially after I was invited onto the footplate by the crew whilst the loco was idling at Kidderminster. As you can imagine, I was pleased to hear of 2968's first movements at Bridgnorth MPD, and duly made plans to go and film the loco once full-line testing commenced.
As such, on the 8th of November, I ventured over to Northwood Halt to film the LMS mogul on one of its loaded trial runs. Here we see 2968 being slowed on approach for the level crossing, accompanied by a cracking blast on its whistle to warn oncoming traffic. Once clear, the mogul is opened up and accelerates through the halt with the rake of LNER teaks in tow.

Thank you for your kind comments, I'm glad you enjoyed this particular video. I recall seeing and travelling behind 2968 during its last stint of operation on the SVR, so it's always been one of my favourites within the line's fleet. Hopefully I'll be able to travel behind the Stanier Mogul once again after it's been launched into traffic, fingers crossed!
