What a crazy looking thing. You got a great sound out of it though. It. It has so many different sounds just coming out of it. I hear Indian Mandolin, Scottish/Irish banjo as you say and some bluegrass/country. A truly mesmerising sound.
Part of me regrets parting with one of these (but in spruce), part of me remembers how I didn't actually make any songs on it, and probably never would have. And realize I have VERY limited space now. But it ALWAYS sounds amazing and is just the most fun instrument to pickup no matter your musical level I've ever come across! It's like a string version of the kazoo - anyone can play it!
It has a unique sound. I would like to hear it played accompanying a guitar. I wish I could just pick up an instrument and start jamming like you. Maybe if I pay more attention and work harder at learning I will! Thanks for sharing your love of stringed instruments with us!!
You do a great job showing the possibilities on a little diatonic instrument. I have an old "strum stick". The Seagull looks much easier to play with a wider finger board, and sounds nicer with a larger body than the strum stick.
-Is this in D A DD tuning? - what type of string does it take? Could I use acoustic guitar strings and if yes which ones? Thank you pls make more vids with this little thing its awesome!
That looks like the instrumental version of a packraft. Totally portable and fun, gotta have one. That looks like So much fun! Thanks for posting this.
I'm transitioning to this instrument from the bagpipes....played the violin when I was younger. I love your "Sitar-esque" fingering! I'm opting for the Mahgony-top for that reason. Do you have any tutorials....I'm a neophyte.
Hi Assaf , I don't normally ask for requests but please would you consider teaching baby's coming home by chet atkins/jerry reed. Been loving all your travis/ ragtime videos so far and this song would make a great addition. I have been trying to transcribe but my ear can't seem to pick everything out . Anyway thanks for all your hard work. Much appreciated.
I'm fairly new to your channel, but I love what you do. Any chance you can do some Nine Inch Nails finger style covers? I'd really like to see "Hurt" because I play an acoustic version. "Ruiner", "Last", or "Something I Can Never Have" would also be cool. Actually, any song would be amazing. Thanks for sharing your time, knowledge, and talent.
just want to thank you for showing me this one. after seeing you clip I bought it. please have a look at my channel to see what I do with it. thanks once more....
Cool. Now.. could you make an fingerstyle arrangement of Burt Bacherach's "What the world needs now is love"? I think that'd fit very well to you and your style, and is a nice song.
Play first, talk later. Instrument reviewers take note: this dude gets it.
Plus Doggo!
Easily one of the best demo's of this instrument. You illustrate the versatility fantastically. Thanks!
Can't tell if the dog is tired or just really feeling the fuck outta that groove.

It sounds great!
Just tried one of these out after playing mandolin for a few years. Very fun little instrument. I think im gonna pick one up when I get paid.

Dude that's amazing man... Never heard anything about an instumen like this!!!! Nice upload man!!!
And the dog keeps time...head goes side to side...can he sing?
Took me until 5:30 to see the other dog to his right lol totally blends in with the pillows
I really like the Oud style ornamentation you use when you play
I’ve played one of these for 2 years now and everyone always asks if it’s a banjo... :/
Can you do such a 'strumming and picking notes at the same time' lesson with a guitar?
This is brilliant the dog is right in the grove, thanks for sharing buddy
Love new instruments!! Thanks for posting this, have added it to my playlist!
Dog looks so stoned.
***** the guy is shaking his leg and that makes the dog shake his head...
Lilo Sot LOL! ;)
But can it play smoke on the water?
The dog is great! I like the stylistic way you do the string stretching vibrato...
7:32 epic dog on the right hahahaha, scared to the sound of merlin

Is the space between the strings farther apart than on a guitar?
Pat Denton yes it is.
Very much so actually

It would be pretty neat to see what you could come up with if you started playing it. Love your guitar lessons.

Will I need to make any adjustments if I swap the strings to play left handed - bridge etc?
I have one on order.
Amazing sound! Btw, can you check on Michael lucareli's "Time in a bottle" arrangement?
Does someone know where I can find tutorials for this instrument? Thanks!
Great stuff matey!!!
Does it sound good with a slide
What is the tuning? Sounds really interesting.
Pongolukandt most likely the standard for this instrument DADD
+andreosterlindh Yeah you're right, the bottom strings are DD to give off a nice droning sound
i can't play a guitar or a banjo but for some reason i could playthis without even trying, it felt so natural i need 10 of em
You're a talented man wonderful
I'm thinking I need one of these... nicely done
How much does that thing cost?
It shouldn't be too hard to find. You can find it on amazon for about $130 from Seagull.
~130 american dollars
just google Seagull merlin
thanks bro
Nice Demo!
1:42 "Chuck!"
But does it Djent?
Johnny Vara... 5 years ago called and they want their “does it djent” comment back...
That thing sounds so cool, what's your tuning?
+Matt Campbell Standard tuning for Merlins is DADD, the two bottom strings are both tuned to D to give off a nice drone type sound

I find your guitar tutorials very helpful. Can you do ukulele tutorials?
It looks like "John Butler - Ocean"
I own one of these. Sitar sound I am hearing on the pull off's very cool big ups

Please do With or Without You - U2

Hahahaha that Chihuahua is funny. He looks like he might be mad cause his EARS are flat against his head! Then his ears slowly come out.
*Sitar I meant sitar not mandolin
I luv the sound it sounds like a banjo and I luv the sound of a banjo thinking about getting it 🤔
this one is not yours...Will you buy one?
Please do a lesson on Stop This Train, John Mayer
On second thoughts, Free Fallin' or Why Georgia would do too!:)
There is a guy on UA-cam by the name of zartimus who does a lot of John mayer lessons you might find useful.
Drew Gray Thank you so much man!!:D
