Really enjoyed both episodes as a blast from the past. I grew up in Ellison St, Just off Spon Lane in the 50's and 60's and before the advent of the new High St and shopping centres. I recall all the pubs on Spon Lane, The Good Shepherd Church, Spon Lane Senior School and Kendricks Park.....memories of (not) so long ago. I left West Brom in 1973 for a new and successful life in Western Australia and talk to my children, grandchildren and Gt Grandchildren about my childhood. As someone already mentioned, thanks for the memories.

Thank you so much for posting this I really enjoyed it and you are knowledgeable of the town. I'm a Bromwich bloke of 71 and apart from some years in the army have always lived here, I live near Old Church which is where my family came from. My first job was at K&J in 1968. I used to drink in the Sandwell or the Star & Garter where Frank the barman ruled. I could talk forever over this town but wont as it's probably boring for non natives.

I got beaten up outside the Sandwell in the late 80s, so it has never been a perfect paradise, but there are worse places in the Midlands. I know I am damning it with faint praise. I played at a couple of pubs in the High Street twenty-odd years ago. One was called the Odd Fellows...and very aptly named it was! Tiny little place - I had to use a miniature drum kit just to fit in the band area. The other was the same place where Lisa danced, The Anchor. We played there half a dozen times and I remember fights breaking out whilst we were in mid-song. Proper fights, not just handbags, and we noticed there was old blood on the walls and ceiling. In the end, we had to stop playing there as it was like a war zone when the customers had a few sniffs of the barmaid's apron.

Thanks for posting! watching from switzerland :-) I grew up in west bromwich - a child of the 80s and 90s. Fond memories of the town.. I remember the high street used to look so much nicer back in those days. and the building society tower used to have that iconic digital clock. Shame the council didnt preserve the high street in the way that it should have done. The conversion of the old bus station into that pink and black monstrosity was a shame. I moved out of the town around the time it was built. The 'public' should have been more like a modern digitial library and media centre, as well as a leisure centre. A place where you could go and have fun but also learn new skills like how to do computer programming. One of the problems the town had (guess still has), is there is not much on offer for young adults with time on their hands. I blame the council for not having any imagination.

@@TravellingLightLisa Yes, most people did in those days - particularly at the time mentioned when colour TV first started. Radio Rentals closed the West Brom branch as a service depot in 1970 - still kept open as a showroom - and I was transferred to the more 'exotic' Smethwick. They were much simpler and happier days back then. The Baggies' players would be seen around in all the pubs and clubs - The Steering Wheel Club was a favourite. I remember that Jeff Astle lived at the top of the town - in semi-detached house! I also remember Len Cantello, who was a first team player, standing across the road from the RR shop waiting for a bus! Can't imagine that happening these days.

I wouldn't say it's dangerous as any less or more than anywhere else, but it's definitely gotten very dirty. Mind the chewing gum on the floor and dog poo and litter ridden with rats. As for shops, better go elsewhere. The council have a lot to answer for big time for ruining it for shop keepers, especially UK citizen retailers.
