Marella Discovery 2 - Sea Day Activities - What this cruise ship has to offer. A whistle stop tour.
Thank you for the review. It's been really helpful. Since my wife and I booked our cruise on Aurora (for June 2025), I've read other reviews that were far from complimentary about the bathrooms (toilets in particular) not functioning in many cabins and the decor being quite shabby. Anyone got any words of encouragement for us? I was feeling a little disappointed already before seeing your review. 🙏
@dlb1911967 we had a wonderful time on Aurora. I have been on newer P&O ships and although they are shiner and more up to date I wouldn't hesitate to book Aurora again. That outside deck area at the rear is fabulous. The cabins were a bit outdated but ours was clean and to be honest we just used it to sleep in and get changed.I'm sure you will have a fabulous time on her. Happy travels and thank you for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
@@TravellingLightLisa Thank you! From what I can see in your video, the ship looks fine to me. I suppose we all have different tastes and expectations. I believe the ship will undergo a refurb in April, so some of the problems others experienced might be ironed out by the time we're onboard. Happy sailing! 😊
Good advice re. looking at alternative airports when it comes to total costs.
@@danielclitheroe1869 We always think that any savings can go towards another holiday! 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
Olden was our number one favourite place in Norway having made our first visit there on Celebrity Infinity. Then we visited Skjolden and Olden was pushed into number two position. Sorry Olden.
@paulaylett8741 I totally agree. I loved Olden (and still do) but Skjolden is simply wonderful. I absolutely love Norway and I'm looking at going again in June to thd North Cape area. Thank you for watching and commenting. Happy travels 😃
Another excellent and informative video. The mention of "Duty Free" took me back to evenings spent in front of the TV in my childhood!
Many thanks, and thanks for watching. I definitely dated myself with the Duty Free reference. Hope all is good on the Thames. 😀👍
Show us your glittery ball gown Giles! “A Wandering Minstrel I” took Nathan back to being in a production of a Mikado quite a few years ago! 😂 You just can’t beat a Marella turndown service! 🤣🤣 Great video guys! Kept us laughing throughout! 😅
@NamyDoesCruising Cheers Guys! I have been in Pirates, Iolanthe, and Ruddigore, but never the Mikado! It has been a few years since I last trod the boards in musical theatre so I am probably just scratching the itch by performing on video (I know you like your musical theatre so don't judge me too harshly! 😂). Thanks for your kind comments and the insta story 😀👍
@TravellingLightLisa You don’t see Ruddigore performed very often! Maybe it’s time for you to retread the boards? 😉 No judgment here - we thought you had a good voice! You’re very welcome! 😃
Another great video my friends! 👍👍😊😊Well done!
@ScotlandFarAndNear thanks so much guys. We really appreciate your support 🙏
Doesn't blue cheese mean it's gone mouldy? Favourable comments about Giles singing, you are in a minority Lisa. Nice dress though, get a suitable hat and all set for Royal Ascot.
@DiscoDavesPubReviews Absolutely right! The mouldier the better. If I get any more positive comments, I will start recording my first album! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
That room is tiny. And needs renovating. I was gonna cruise on that ship in May but this review has changed my mind. Thank you
@edgegymnastics8409 thanks for watching and commenting 😊 We may have been very unlucky with our cabin cleanliness but we have been cruising since 2017 with Marella, P&O and Ambassador and these lines cabins were much cleaner than Cunards.
Those pillow encasements were gross.
@@edgegymnastics8409 Not quite the standards we were expecting! Thanks for watching 👍
I have a recommendation for your attire. Don’t wear a black bra with a light colored shirt.
Thank you for your insightful fashion advice on a cabin review 😀 👍
Why wouldn’t you just have the drawers cleaned so you can put your clothes away?
The drawers were cleaned but I felt more comfortable leaving my clothes in my clean suitcase. 😅
A million points for the ‘turndown service’ gag! And a couple more for Giles giving us his Nanki-Poo. Fun film as ever, And don’t undersell yourselves, you looked great and a photo would have been justified. Nice one in capturing the Parade of Porkers (I’d fit right in), was one of you hiding behind a lifeboats with the dames?
I love a bit of singing from Giles , thank you. You both looked smart and I liked your dress with the red handbag Lisa.
@maryfreeman9231 thanks Mary 😊
I do like it when people make an effort with their dress on gala nights, but I'm used to Cunard. Even they are not as strict as they once were. I've heard that QM2 is stricter on the dress code. Anyway, I don't have a ball gown. I like the look of Marella ships on your videos.
We like to dress up for the ships' gala nights, formal nights, celebration nights, or dress to impress nights as well. I am glad that you have got a sense of the ship from our videos. Thanks for watching.
If you are wondering what a formal or dress to impress night is like on Marella Cruises join us and have a look. Thanks for watching 😊
Love the start to this - One for the road Giles !! Agree with you on Sindhu...Speciality Dining has to be "special" in our view and this hasnt got off to a good start... Dealing with Allergens has to be a priority .... Si had a similar problem on Discovery 2 but at least the Head Waiter dealt with it better than in your case...Good curries though.....But most cruise ships can serve up a decent curry even in the Buffets..Glad you enjoyed it but worth the extra? And is this "Speciality Dining"? Cant say we think its worth the fee based on what you've shown and Marella do need to rethink their speciality dining options and make them "Special". Good video Guys!
Thanks, Netty. It could definitely have been better. Fortunately, the included food was OK on E2, so we will probably not bother with the speciality restaurants ever again! (I bet we do, though 😂). Thanks for watching 👍
What a reference! "Keith Barron, endlessly trapped on the Costa del Sol 🤣" Mel likes your dress, Lisa, and she's asking where it came from?
@flydriveexplore Apparently, it is a Roman dress. (That must make it over 2000 years old!) She says it was new with tags from a charity shop for £8. I am definitely ageing myself with the Duty Free reference! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Another great video. I could have easily watched another 10 minutes of this (if not more). What comes across with your Marella series is the friendliness of staff and enjoyable entertainment and decent food. Lovely dress, Lisa. Very classy. And as for Giles’ shirt and singing……I look forward to your future videos 😂
@BrummieNik Thanks for that. Giles will come round and perform 10 minutes of G&S classics first thing in the morning. Leave the latch off. Thanks for watching 👍
giles is so funny
@susantwining2879 Thank you Susan, and thanks for watching 👍
We didn’t know that you could sing so well Giles and Gilbert and Sullivan would be impressed! You both looked very smart and not over the top. As always, a very balanced vlog.
@@kathleenpipes Many years of am dram and pantomime daming have shaped the man I am! 😂

@kathleenpipes to go with my gownless evening straps. Naturally!
very hard to please i went here and it was great
@AM13284 On the positive side, our main was fine. Glad you had a good experience. Thanks for watching 👍
As someone has pointed out, if the cocktail tastes weak just add a shot or two of vodka.
@DavidHeslop-o2v Good tip! Although I am trying to cut down, so you are a bad influence! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Wow. That was expensive. I'm a vegetarian and I get quite cross on the rare occasions that we go to restaurants here in Perth because I end up paying as much for a plate of pasta as someone having a big steak with vegetables or chips. It's not fair, is it?
@joanfreestone1707 I am not sure that all-inclusive or fixed price dining works particularly well for some people (including us). You can feel like you are paying for others over-consumption. Paying as you go for what you consume must be more eco-friendly and better health wise. Hope Perth is nice and sunny. Kind regards from a cold Staffordshire 🥶
@@TravellingLightLisa Thank you but it's really too hot here. It's over 40 degrees at the moment and the other day, it was 44 😞 Just going out to get the washing in was horrible.
Ouch, that's too hot! 🔥
Just back of the discovery two Never again the food was poor
@gavsdrams oh no!! So sorry to hear this. Hope it hasn't put you off trying another cruise line or ship?
We sailed on Dicovery 2 also just after the refurbishment the food and ambience service very poor us too never again
@@graemedocherty3088 sorry to hear this. I hope you have a better experience on another cruise line.
We love Kora La.
@@Djn1980 Thanks for watching 👍
Me and my wife have only done celebrity cruises and are looking at Marella explorer 2 for 7 day cruise, can I ask is there much sway while on board as my wife suffers badly, thankyou
@manfromthetoon We didn't feel anything at all in the Canaries, but when we were on Explorer on the way back from the Baltics, the North Sea crossing was a little choppy and we felt some pitch and sway. It is going to be weather dependent, so avoid any Bay of Biscay travel and pick low down and middle cabins to reduce the rocking and rolling. Maybe a Mediterranean cruise would be a good one to try. Hope you have a great cruise if you decide to book 👍
@ we are looking at the treasurers of the Mediterranean which takes you from palma to Barcelona with few other places
@manfromthetoon There are obviously no guarantees, but that is probably a good one to book. You only live once! 😀👍
It’s disappointing that Lisa’s allergies weren’t properly catered for. Sorry to hear about your bad experience at Sindhu - we dined there once on P&O Azura and really enjoyed it. We also tried Kora La on Explorer 2 during our June 2022 cruise and found it okay but nothing special, especially considering the extra cost for a speciality restaurant.
@NamyDoesCruising Cheers Guys! It was disappointing. We may well try Sindhu again at some point. We just found the food a little bland on our Iona sailing. Thanks for watching. Might bump into you on the seas in 2025!
Very good reviews on Explorer, we are sailing on 7th Feb 2025 and we have learned a lot from your reviews. I am Low Gluten lets see how they fare. Do they have chargeable coursed in the open dining rooms ?
Thank you for your kind comments. There are usually three chargeable options in the main dining room Latitude, such as steak (£11.95), rack of lamb (£11.95) and seafood thermidor (£16.95). Other restaurants also have items for a surcharge. Thanks for watching 👍
I have yet to go on a cruise. I like the idea of going on an Ambassador Cruise as they seem smaller and more relaxed than others. Maybe you will go on another Ambassador Cruise? I understand they have a new ship. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. Ambassador is a reasonable stepping stone as it is a no-fly option from the UK, and the ships are not too big. There are no bells and whistles, but we enjoyed the experience, and the staff were great. We are looking at another cruise with them this year. Whatever you choose, have a great time! Thanks for watching 👍

@garyfardon8841 Or maybe, 'budget conscious travellers'? Thanks for watching and sharing your thought. 😂👍
God you 2 are a dose
@fuzzy1237 Thanks for watching and sharing your thought 😀👍
@ my pleasure
We are booked on Marella Explorer 2 later this year so found this really helpful being vegetarian and having food allergies. We had a fantastic meal on Fred Olsen’s Balmoral in their Vasco restaurant.
@elizabethrichardson6401 thanks for your feedback 😊 We haven't tried Fred Olsen yet but it's good to hear that it caters for people with dietary requirements. Have a fabulous time on Explorer 2!!
Think I will stick to the King Arthur in Walsall. Terrific indian food at a great price.
@DiscoDavesPubReviews I remember seeing a very good review of that pub recently! By a couple of drunks, as I recall! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Folks, you decide. We were pretty sober in my opinion. We had been drinking for 8 hours.@@TravellingLightLisa
Oh you two, you make me smile. If I were a telly executive I’d revive Mr & Mrs just to put you on it (Derek Batey, not Alan Taylor). Thanks for another great film, we’ve never been to that eatery - we’ve not done Marella - but are due on P&O’s Azura later this year, so we may skip Sindhu. When you were on Ambassador, did you try the Indian… there was a hilarious dish in which a line of turmeric or something across the plate represented Partition. Anyway, the treatment of Lisa here was appalling, you two are so much less ‘feedbacky’ than me and Steve - I would have been fuming. I agree that the meals should be more mix and match to accommodate different tastes and dietary needs. Oh, and may we have your pal’s samosa recipe?
Lol. Cheers. I think you are ageing yourself by referencing Derek Batey but probably more so by commenting on the wrong video! 😂 Anyhoo, We did not try the Ambassador Indian but that dish sounds odd! If you try Sindhu, we would love to hear how you got on. We don't get angry when things go wrong. We're more likely to complain and then start laughing about it (most disconcerting for the staff). We do however have the luxury of the gift of feedback packaged in a YT video 😀👍 We don't have that recipe. We just eat them! Life is too short to stuff a mushroom or wrap a samosa. Thanks as ever for watching. 👍
Speciality restaurants on all cruise lines have gone up loads since covid. We are in kora la in 2019 and I think we paid around £36 for two. They also made a little cake for my husband's birthday. I agree marella isn't that cheap anymore but still good value when you look at other cruises especially if you are flying somewhere like the carribbean.
The percentage increases in prices are surprising. We had some great value family holidays with Marella a few years ago but it is a little more difficult to get deals on Marella these days. Thanks for watching 👍
I've had excellent curries in the MDR and The Quays on Arvia and Iona so I definitely wouldn't pay a surcharge for the meal you had. I also felt it lacked ambience and the background noise sounded a bit canteen like but perhaps I'm being picky. 😂 Living in Birmingham we're spoilt for choice for delicious curries. Great video, thank you!
The Balti Triangle used to be the place to go in Birmingham, but I have recently read that there are only four balti houses left! Fortunately, I used to work in Smethwick and know a few decent places there. I usually avoid curries in pubs as they are generally disappointing. On P&O, the lentil dhal on the late night buffet is usually very good. Thanks for watching again 🙂 👍
We love Kora La ,but you need to go there hungry because of all that delicious food.
@@debbieball900 Glad you like Kora La. Thanks for watching 👍
I’ve eaten in Sindhu on Iona and Arvia three times. Had 3 courses and cost about £20.00. Never had a problem with the food, flavours or quality and service. I haven’t booked on my next cruise as I much prefer Mizhuna on Arvia (or Keel and Cow). Looking at the food, presentation on Marella, I wasn’t impressed and certainly not at that price. (Think you just had a bad experience at Sindhu)
Good to hear that Sindhu was OK for you. It was Iona that we went on just after Covid and found it very bland. We may try it again next time we are on P&O. Thanks for watching and commenting it is much appreciated 👍
That waiter was bloody useless, the way he leaned over you was a bloody disgrace, and you had a bare table beside you.
I think he was just auditioning for a bigger role in our film! To be fair, he was a nice guy, and the waiter service was good, but there was a lot of space he could have used as it was quiet. Thanks for watching 👍
Lisa please learn how to use a knife and fork correctly - please - you look awfully common the way you are using them in this video
Most people in the world eat Asian food with their fingers. These arbitrary rules of western etiquette are irrelevant and were originally designed to separate social classes. The fact that people find this important in this day and age is risible. I blame Downton Abbey! If Lisa chooses to use her fork upside down or I choose to eat soup with a knife, we really don't care. We are to all intents and purposes working class, common and proud of it. Thanks for watching 👍
How rude 😮

I was on the Marella Voyager two weeks ago and saw people wearing shorts for dinner in the main dining room, buttering bread, using a fork like a spoon...I don't like it but it's their holiday as much as mine is to me. Perhaps you could have worded it better?
That is rude. What does it matter how Lisa eats. Her holiday.
So I was thinking of booking this for when we go in March on Explorer for my birthday . For the amount you paid it didn't look that impressive . In our humble opinion I would say that Sindhu looks like it is much better value for money
Take a look at the menu and see what you think. There are a few other options in Kora La to choose from, which might give better value, but those were meat dishes. At the end of the day, it is a judgement call. The curry dishes were good, but from a value perspective, we won't be rushing back. On the positive side, there are a bunch more included dining options on Marella to choose from. I am sure you will enjoy whatever you go for. Thanks for watching guys 👍
8:50 is he on glue?
😂 Nitrous oxide and wine this week! Thanks for watching 👍
Travelled with. a disabled friend who is in a wheelchair. Asked the driver of the bus if there was an accessible option. Three drivers laughing, pointing and taking the mickey.... Not a nice place
That is horrible! So sorry you had that experience. Honfleurs cobbles are not wheelchair friendly, but there is no need for that behaviour from the drivers. I can understand your dislike for the place. Thank you for watching 👍
Thanks guys , I always feel that the speciality venues on board are a bit of a rip off both price and quality wise , mind you the wife just reckons I won't take her again because I'm tight. And ..erm..nice one there Prince 😂
@alan3755 It is 'intelligently frugal' not tight 😂 Thanks for that. Next week I will be performing an extract from the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan! Thanks for watching 👍
@@TravellingLightLisa 🤣 Now that we would like to see , and a lift disco version if possible 😂
Given that you paid an up-charge for this experience, it didn’t appear to be an elevated experience worthy of a “speciality” status. Providing good quality South Asia cuisine with a vegetarian base should have not caused the chefs even a blink of an eye. I was worried about Giles when he mentioned what the speciality experience cost you at the beginning of the video. Looked like he needed a couple of stiff drinks and a week at the Priory 😂
You know me, Nik. Short arms and deep pockets! Thanks for watching. 👍
We have sailed on Marella many times and eaten in all the speciality restaurants, but we are sailing on Discovery in March and have decided not to eat in any of the speciality restaurants due to the consistently rising costs. Marella cruises are no longer value for money, much better offers out there if you look around.
You are right. We have had some fabulous family holidays on Marella for great value, but they are relatively a lot more expensive now. I am not sure that all-inclusive works for us these days. Lisa doesn't drink too much, and I am cutting down. That always makes me think I am paying for someone else to get drunk! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Interesting video. It did seem overpriced based on your experience. I am surprised that they did not offer Lisa an alternative to the sushi given the fact that they were told beforehand and you also mentioned it to the head chef.
It was disappointing, and considering the price, I don't think it is unfair to expect a little more of an elevated experience. Thanks for watching again 🙂
We are not foodies and don’t use specialty restaurants. The majority of our cruises have been on Celebrity where we find the food in the MDR is good and it’s not worth paying additional charges for restaurants that may not be notably better. Maybe if the service, location and ambiance were superior we could be tempted.
@andrewtaylor8625 We tend to agree. Our experiences so far have been disappointing, but we live in hope. However, I do resent paying good money for bad value experiences. Thanks for watching 👍
I absolutely agree! I have a seafood allergy , but love ‘Indian’ curries. I checked with the maitre de and they quoted the wrong menu … we had it anyway. As I don’t like fish generally and can’t eat seafood I found the menu extremely limited. The Bhaji ‘s were nothing like traditional and no mint raita Both my husbands and my curry were not hot enough, he asked for vindaloo strength I requested medium and got mild. I Skipped the dessert. We did have the Lassi drink (we had premium drinks) Overall like yourselves we found the service a bit dismissive, it may have been lost in translation. Guest services gave us the other menu (because of another issue) It was no better and I ended up making up the mint sauce for the bhajis at the table … they were fascinated! We too live in the West Midlands where good curries abound. As a general rule we don’t like Fusion Restaurants. Ironically we were on Azura for Christmas, we booked Sindu for Christmas Eve, but both caught bad colds and had no sense of taste or smell . It looked nice but we apologised and left after the main and skulked off back to our cabin. It least it wasn’t as expensive as Marella. Happy cruising. Chris & Dave Lawrie 😎
Us Midlanders are definitely spoilt for decent curries 😀👍 We are not convinced that speciality dining is for us. Certainly not on Marella, but never say never. Thanks for watching and commenting it is much appreciated 👏
