  • This video is part 1 of a series on Tier Point Runs. In this video I will explain what they are and how you find them. I'll explain the three types of tier point run and my experiences of doing all three. I'll also explain some of the quirks of earning tier points and what characteristics a good tier point run is likely to have.
    I'll then explain how to search for fares on Google Flights and I'll show how to optimise your search. And we will find a potentially good flight from Sofia to Las Vegas that we will explore in more detail in video 2 - which can be found here - • Tier Point Runs Part 2... .

    I've watched this video 3 or 4 times now, it is really superb. There are quite a few videos I've come across that talk about tier point running but they brush over the mechanics. I've even watched a video where, after explaining the 2000 mile rule they said, "How do you do a tier point run? Find a cheap flight!" Like oh, wow is that all I have to do. Your video goes through all the details from first concept to making the booking. Really good tutorial, thanks

    Hi Matt. Thanks for all the excellent content. I have a very elementary question as I am new to this and apologize if it is very obvious/silly! Is the decision on starting the trip from Sofia instead of LHR based on the fare? Wouldn't starting and ending it in LHR/elsewhere in the UK and adding a European city that has good connections to the US in between be more convenient while netting the same points?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  8 місяців тому +1

      No worries! This video from deep in the archives might best explain... ua-cam.com/video/omrH7dHCzNY/v-deo.html Starting from eg Sofia puts the flight up against a different set of competing flights versus starting in London so requires a different pricing structure - usually lower. If you went LON-SOF-USA, BA wouldn't be an option on the SOF-USA legs as they don't fly that route so the fare wouldn't really exist.

  • @clsiow1

    Watched this and other videos with great interest. However, I wonder if you might be able to update things and what your current TP cost targets are. I tried to rerun your Google flights search from Sofia and could no where near match prices and best to Las Vegas was about £2300 (and similar prices to LA from Lon or Sof).

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  7 місяців тому

      The days of £1,110 from SOF to the West Coast are long gone.... The best prices have 6 month advance purchase so you can probably do better than £2,300.... I am working to £2 per tier point or less these days and have my fingers crossed we'll get to £1.75 or even £1.50 sometime next year...

    TQ for a very clear and concise effort on tier runs. Next Feb. 2022 should be ok for me to start travelling freely. I will be visiting my children in
    New York as usual yearly (before Covid 19 hit us). For next year,I will also need to do my tier points run but is it possible to make a stop for 2 weeks in New York? I plan the run as follows, Part 1 Sin-Doha_Sofia. Part 2 is Sofia-LHR-JFK-LAX-HNL and reverse. Should net me .1500 points. If I can stop for 2 weeks in NY, this should be good for me. Your guidance is appreciated. Part 1 is with Qatar Airlines. Part 2 is with BA and BA codeshare with AA and Alaska.JFK to LA is on A321 sharklets.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Lou - thanks for watching. Sounds like a fun trip! A 2 week stop in NYC is tricky as the cheapest fares ex-SOF don't allow stopovers. If you add anything over a 24 hour transfer then the fare kicks up into a much higher bucket and costs quite a lot more... It may not be that much more for Feb 22 as its

    Just wondering if you can get family tier points? For example 4 of us are flying to Tlv in a couple of weeks and individual tier points are 90 each in wtp. My year ends October 8th. Next year have. 4 j tickets booked in September again to Tlv but these generate tier 210 points. Unlikely I’ll get the boss to fly transatlantic, but hk and Israel are go lol

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Рік тому

      No to family tier points, although you should sign everyone up to the Executive Club so they collect TPs into their own account. Probably not that useful, but they'll all also earn avios, which you can access if you then link those accounts via a family account. I think Egyptair does allow the person paying to collect the points for all the people travelling, but I'm not aware of any other airline that does that.

  • @joannsbuncelmans3328
    @joannsbuncelmans3328 Рік тому +1

    Hey! When is best to earn tier points? You did mention it in the video, but still didn’t get it! If my collection year ends on 8th of July and card expires on 31st Aug. When would be best time?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Рік тому

      If you can, earning tier points in your grace period (which for you is 9 July to 31 August) gives you status for the longest possible time - just about 2 years. And if you already have status, that will still be in place when you travel.

  • @stu3kim
    @stu3kim 11 місяців тому +1

    Sorry if this has already been asked. Do you need to book a separate economy flight to Sofia to then start your tier run?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  11 місяців тому

      You need to get to Sofia one way or another to be able to start this trip. Most people will fly but it needn't be on BA

  • @Shaunn97
    @Shaunn97 2 роки тому +1

    Do you earn double tier points if you book someone else’s ticket who you’re travelling with as well as your own?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 роки тому

      The person travelling will earn their own tier points - you can't swipe theirs if you paid. Avios earned can be transferred or shared via a household account but tier points are personal to the traveller. Cheers and thanks for the support.

    Just going back through all your TP run and ITA matrix vids for home work and to get a total understanding, (hopefully) checking out this one and at 7.57mins in, you say BA to Oman, I take it thats MCT with BA is 80tp whilst with RJ it's 140tp. Just checking the BA calculator and it gives both BA and RJ as 140tp from LHR-MCT. Is that something that has changed recently or am I looking at the wrong place?
    Just for clarity.

    Hi Matt, watched all your videos and love the content and the progress the channels made. Any help welcome please.
    Looking at starting My status journey. All personal travel.
    Blue chasing silver(Think I could maintain silver each year)
    Thinking of doing 6 x single days, Aberdeen to London. (Same day)
    £161 x 6 = £960 = 480 tier points.
    No hotel needed, Anyone got any better ideas?
    Doing this to open up better options for my partner and I with our new born daughter.
    Also does Business class on this flight get lounge access at Aberdeen and London?
    Thanks in advance

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  Рік тому +1

      You've certainly got the right user name! Business class tickets get lounge access... Perhaps consider this - a little more advanced but it'll get you there quicker... Buy a BA holiday ABZ-LHR-AMS. Out Saturday, back the next Saturday. Include a car rental that you never touch to make it a double TP earning holiday. So 40+40+40+40 x 2 = 320. Then buy a separate ticket AMS-LHR-ABZ for the same Saturday to Saturday week - can't make that a double TP holiday as it doesn't start in the UK, but that'll earn 40+40+40+40 = 160. So 480 TPs for 2 days travel - even with the car hire it should work out pretty cheap.
      AMS. Or JER. Or MAN. Or anywhere really! Not risk free but easier in AMS as you can back to back easily and head back to London on the plane you arrived on. I would probably stay a night each time in AMS as a) it reduces the risk and b) I like Amsterdam! But you get the idea....
