Having lived and worked in Singapore for over thirteen years I decided to retire to Malaysia for the exact reasons you stated. I've now been a resident of Penang for over a decade and have not regretted that decision for a single day.
ahh but you forget, you WORKED IN SINGAPORE , if you worked in malaysia that would totally be different As a Malaysian we hate it there, our country is a dead end for most of us, our currency is low, theres nothing much to do, our visa is garbage and we only recently only changed from a super corrupted and uncaring goverment who use racism to devide the people. Alot of malaysians are also pretty anti-social as that is the way the goverment wants us to be raised. For us its a prison, leaving malaysia is a blessing even if we have to work our asses off in another country. For a foreigner or somebody who works outside of it though... Malaysia is a pretty decent place.
As a singaporean, it was interesting to hear your view. You touched on this a little and you're right, we have plenty of very high net worth people fighting to come in here, and space is limited, so we are stringent, choosy, and probably don't give the best deals. Cost of living here has absolutely exploded post-covid. Given your circumstances, choosing malaysia over singapore just makes a lot of sense and i honestly agree with it
Stringent and choosy? I see PRs given out to low level (as in low complexity) office workers and even massage ladies. There are also PRs given to those with dubious qualifications but you can see those who graduated from NUS and NTU being jobless. So much for world class education.
We grant 30k+ new PRs and 20+k new citizenships per year. This number is tiny compared to the actual number of people who are trying to obtain PR and citizenship here. Therefore we are stringent and choosy. Your personal subjective and unsubstantiated anecdotes regarding PRs being given to low quality entrants is neither evidence, nor is it sufficient to invalidate the fact that we are choosy about who we let in here
If Singapore is such a desirable place to live, work and play then more stringent requirements like IELTS and qualifications from top 100 universities should be in place for PR applications. NUS itself had 32k students as at 5 Sep 2022. Divide this by 4 years for simplicity for an honours degree and you have roughly 4K potential PRs every year. Multiply 4K by 100 universities (just assume the same enrolment numbers) and you have 400k potential applicants every year.
Not everyone who studies in other country would want to stay in that country regardless how awesome the country is. There are a lot of factor contributing to it. Family, scholarship boding with home country, circumstances, cost of living, job availability, preference etc. Some country may seems ideal in paperwork but it may not click with some people.
You make wise decision. Living in Malaysia is more comfortable. Living in Singapore is more stress. Singapore is too pact, make me feel like having a difficult breathing.

IMHO. Malaysia is not as organized, not as clean, not as low-crime, not as rich as Singapore. Malaysia has much more friendly and warm people. It has more to explore and has a soul. If you care only about money, then I'd say Singapore. If you want natural culture, places, and an organic feel, then I'd say Malaysia.
Singapore is just a corporation disguised as a nation with the Lee family being the emperors of Singapore. No freedom of speech, no say in removing draconian laws and every solution involves fines. Hence, the reason why Singapore is a fine country

Spot on. A concise analysis. Singapore is an excellent place for holding investments and a currency safe haven, but Malaysia definitely wins in terms of lifestyle and cost of living.
as long as you are not earning in Ringgit of cos, if you have loads of cash and is trying to find a place to settle down, countries with cheaper cost of living is ideal, ur 1mil USD for example would last you much long, u can afford 3 storey house, multiple cars, and even a team of servants, from cooks, personal drivers, maids, gardeners..etc, unless u are moving to Malaysia, to get a JOB and work there in maybe KL and find a place to live..

It's better that way, not 1st world country as the comedian said, but in Malaysia everything is there, we feel comfortable, food is plenty we can grows food and self sufficient we just need modern way to plant and process, we have oil gas and green energy plentyful especially in the state of Sarawak, we will be the producing hydrogen the biggest in the world, we have many dams that can supply energy to the whole of SEA. Malaysia have everything, people are educated almost all can speaks English and are friendly and well manner and humble. Let's Malaysia just the way its now, we can have a nice home even with garden eventhough we are not that rich like Singaporean. We can have few cars in 1 house. Even my family we have more than 10 cars as each of my children have a least 1 car. So compare to Singapore. We really have a nice and comfort living. So please lah don't compare us Malaysia to other country. Malaysia truly Asia. One things there is no other countries in this world celebrated Hari Raya ,, Chinese New year, Christmas, Gawai, Kamaatan, even Good Friday, Deepavali , Wesak Day etc etc etc. You cannot find that elsewhere. Only Malaysia give every relegions or cultural and races a public holiday and open house on the festival. So Malaysia is a blessed country.
As a half Singaporean and Malaysian, I feel living in Singapore is like living in a big fish aquarium with fake pebbles and seaweeds. You literally feeling stressed out and trapped in the island with the reclaimed land and concrete jungles yet you can go to nowhere..
As a Singapore PR whos been living in the country for over 20 years, I have to say the current rental issue has gone bonkers, bordering pure greed. 45 % to 55 % increase from Govt housing ( HDB ) and Condos is a common theme. So much so, I actually have the notion of packing up and leaving back to Malaysia if it continues next year. I don't see the point of paying nearly 55% of my paycheck just to get a roof over my head

Knowing that buying home prices have gone up, government is now giving out all kinds of money grants to home buyers. Besides citizens are also getting GST vouches and all kinds of money perks. Out medical bills are largely subsidised by government. Having an efficient and effective government makes all the difference between Singapore and Malaysia...

This is spot on. As a Malaysian, I once contemplated to migrate overseas for better career and income. But I also noticed that the living costs and taxes in these developed countries are very high. I also noticed that the harder you work, the more you make, the more taxes they take. I cannot accept that I will have to work from Jan to April, just to pay my income tax. I eventually stayed back in Malaysia, and figured a way out to earn my income from the US. By earning US dollars and living in Malaysia, I think I have the best of both worlds.
There is no perfect place but just a suitable place to live in. My criterias to live especially during retirement are Food, Language, Medical, Weather, People, Lifestyle and of course $$. I may be bias but Malaysia virtually has its all. It caters from budget to luxury segments as far as housing, medical, food and etc. Malaysian generally do not judge what you wear, what you eat and/or what car you drive. Don't be shocked to have common local ordinary millionaires on their T Shirts and Flip Flops although they may be driving a Porsche.. A luxury car be parked at at the roadside to have their favourite street food. That is very normal and common in the Malaysia Culture.
I am from Singapore and I am lucky to be from here as I do not need to relocate to enjoy the bests of Singapore and Malaysia. KL is just five hours by car and Johore is just a bus ride away. If I take a tour bus to Thailand, Malaysia feels homey to me because the people, language and Food are the same. It is only when I reach Dannok, then I felt I have really arrived at another country.

I am Singaporean and have the best of both worlds. Work in Singapore and relax in Malaysia. Earn the Sing dollar and then stretch the dollar in Malaysia. You can do a lot of things in Malaysia thru the Sing dollar.
Singaporeans can afford to splurge in Malaysia but the trade off is, the cost of living in Singapore is high and not many people can retire for good with their monthly CPF payout.
I am malaysian and born in johor. During my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s, we visited Singapore regularly. The exchange rate was 1 to 1. Many Malaysians go there to shop as I remembered. But it then got more and more expensive due to the currency. OK now back to current time. Singapore has more than 5m people. How long more before the entire island is populated. It will be like hk island. I hate such scenario. Secondly, I heard that more and more hawkers have retired or passed away, taken over by foreigners. We hv such situation in Malaysia but not as bad as singapore. Can you imagine your favourite Chinese food is cooked by a myanmar guy or others? Therefore even Singaporean come to Malaysia to eat authentic cuisine cook by own ethnic groups like malay dishes, indian dishes, Chinese dishes. Most Singaporeans are educated and getting high pay. How many will take over the family hawker stalls from their parents??
Ask yourself why Singapore is more successful than Malaysia even though you guys have more land, more people, billions dollars of natural resources and founded earlier than Singapore.

As a sporean agree the stress level and expensive house and car especially. Malaysia is a good place to stay with more spaces to explore. Spore is small but is easy to get from places to places.
I lived in Singapore in Woodlands. We would often cross the border to JB to fill up the car and wash it. Much cheaper! And the hawker food was much better too!

Singapore is one giant city that offers all the positive and negative aspects of a giant city. Malaysia is an actual country that is spread out and has several hubs. Of course you can choose KL as your base but you can also visit Penang and Kota Kinabalu to see places and relax a bit. Malaysia also easily wins the cost of living category. But if you still want to do business in SIngapore, it's always right around the corner.

I think it boils down to this: Singapore: Wealth expansion. Malaysia: Cost of living. Just have to pick which suits your priorities in your current phase of life. I saw in the comments someone worked in SG and retired in MY. That's a genius move.

Kuala Lumpur itself is like Singapore + Bangkok + hong kong mixed together. It's hard for me to explain here. try visit kuala lumpur & you will feel a bit like singapore but it is not singapore.
Live, work and run a business in Singapore for the better part of 25 years. The barrier to entry now is massive and what Andrew doesn't state is that they'll let you open a business and park money here, but they may not give you a right to reside here (that is separate). Also, housing is astronomical especially to rent, buying means down payments that would equal outright owning a home elsewhere, and personal overhead that can include private schools for kids with fees equal to sending them to exclusive colleges in the USA. Not worth it and many expats and companies with foreign employees are beginning to recognize this fact.
As a malaysian, there are definitely more advantage to Malaysia than Singapore, both have its perks but if you enjoy cheap living and more space and freedom to go anywhere then def choose Malaysia. Anyway, if you have access to Malaysia then its only a short drive away from Singapore and Thailand even.
Lived in SG for a decade. Now in BGC PH at 20% rental rate of SG, on par with JB / Iskandar rates in one of the most modern neighborhoods in the world. Many long term SG expats are looking to move to KL. Personally, Malaysia is viable alternative.

Really, rental increase 2023 >40%? 🤯. My previous London-based international co moved its HQ out of Spore to KL, Msia in mid-2008 just prior to 2008 financial crises! Lucky for them but I got lots of snide, critical comments and flak then frm Sporean associates who were Msian-KL born Sporeans - derogatory comments abt Msia and the HQ shift. 😂

Where you talked about not making decisions based on status, that really hit the nail on the head. Every person's wealth journey, wants, needs, etc are all different. One person may live somewhere for tax reasons, for a cost of living, or lifestyle, while the next may be focusing on business.
As a Singaporean, I must say that I agree with you. 😂 We ourselves are growing increasingly frustrated with the over-inflated cost of living here. And contrary to popular belief, we are not all well-paid here. 😢 I believe the economic climate is changing in Malaysia with a better government at its helm.

Over inflated cost of living? Please go overseas and know that you get to eat mixed vege rice at hawker with 2 meat 1 vege for 3.50. In Korea I eat one gimbap it cost 3500 won which is 3.50$ sgd. no meat. You want meat? Fried chicken cost 27000 won and above. 27$. For one? Sure you go rural or neighbourhood area which is not so accessible but still it will cost above 10$. We do not own farm lands so we import food. Our food cost of living is at the lowest possible. A fellow Singaporean in Korea.

Singapore is an island nation with a population of over 6 million people. So, it can get very crowded in some areas especially during the peak hours. That being said, Singapore is very fast paced and a competitive society that prioritize work over family and has the longest working hours in the world at 45 hours per week followed by China at 42 hours per week. It is not a place for a big middle-income family living on budget
@@zebimicio5204 Malaysians who live in Johor have the best of both worlds. They earn 3x more and pay much lesser compared to living in Singapore. This is why many Malaysians from different states move to Johor

Singapore has one of the world best public transport / cleaner air than KL which has heavy traffic jam with many driving because of quite poor public transport.

Singapore is a very expensive place to live with ridculous house/condo prices and rents, hardly a place to raise a family with lack of land, free space, jungle and a 'normal country' life. Malaysia has everything and cheaper by 50~60% and with higher living quality. Even a lowly paid person can own a car. Yes, prices have risen now but that is a worldwide phenomenon. Having just returned from Indonesia, the food and transport prices have increased 50~100% since my last visit in 2018 ! Even a cup of plain coffee at a cafe in Malaysia (USD 0.35) while in say, Medan (big city) is USD1.00 !

I lived in Singapore for more than 7 years until June 2022. It turned to a totalitarian state from 2020 onward forcing every resident to get jabbed up to 4/5 times or get their working visa cancelled. The government went psycho on any reasonable voice that contested the extreme measures they took against the pure blood. I left the country without any regrets. I am looking at a sick nation now with countless health problems, skyrocketing inflation, double real estate price and a broken fearful society.
Singapore has one of the lowest world death rate of Covid of only 17xx . Singapore has one of world best health care . SGH is one of world top hospitals. Singapore life longevity is one of world top highest .

@W JJ Glad you left! We really don't need anti-vaxers in our country. We are proud to have one of the lowest death rate in the world throughout covid. You may feel your personal freedom is way more important than preventing high numbers of death, but I am glad many lives were saved because of it, we all went through major inconveniences as a team. So yea, do move to a country that prioritize personal freedoms over majority welfare. And please don't come back here again. This is the type of resident that I feel will add no benefits to Singapore.
It is better to start a business in KL/Penang as the talent there is comparable. Why pay about 3x if the employee capability/productivity is only 1.5x at best (if you are talking about the average worker). Office and housing rental in Singapore is also very high. No point enriching the landlords and supporting the rentier economy. Foreigners and PRs also need to pay gst which currently stands at 8% and will go up to 9% in Jan 2024. However, they will not get any gst rebates which Singapore citizens receive.
Singaporean here and I came across your videos because I was looking into videos on how to get residency in Malaysia 😂😂😂 Singapore is great, I love my country and my relatives are here but once my children are working, I would go and retire in Malaysia 😅 I love Malaysia, still have cousins and Aunts staying there and will visit everytime I can....the food is great and as a muslim, its so easy to find praying areas and halal food...oh the food alone is enough reason to move there 😋😋😋
@@nomadcapitalist Ya...when my mum was about to be born, her parents went back to Batu Pahat to give birth there as all the relatives are there to look after the newborn during the first few months. Singapore was still a part of Malaysia back then so most of the older generation of Singaporean still have roots in Malaysia.

Thank you so much for loving Malaysia. I worked in Singapore before, due to its size, everywhere is HDB. Malaysia has much more space, therefore more landed properties & forest. You feel spacious here & relax.

I think this is a correct analysis. I visited Singapore the same year I visited Malaysia; just before it, actually, and I was indeed very impressed with it but it is considerably more expensive, true enough, as well as being quite a bit busier. It's a city-state so it's by design, going to have a quite different vibe to it and there is not as much space to move around. The two place are similar in many ways but quite different in others so it'll be up to the individual to decide which type of atmosphere they prefer.
Seeing from a different angle, I like the football sport & stadiums in Malaysia. If you are big fan of football (or soccer as Americans would call it) you are in for a treat here. The local league has passionate supporters and the clubs are well supported. You will see many fans going to the stadium to support their local teams. Its not only the big clubs I am talking about (like JDT, Selangor, KL City etc)...even the smaller clubs like Penang and Sabah have loyal following. The footballing culture and soul is very strong in this country....
and salary? How much is the salary? Alochol is expensive because of high tax to discourage drinking. How much is a plate of rice in Singapore vs KL and how much in local currency? How about an iphone, big Mac etc?

Singapore is what Monaco became 25+ years ago. Nice, clean, A list, but also incredibly low bang for your buck. How many watch stores and 3 star restaurants can you really want to spend time on, even if you can “afford it”. To visit - sure - A few weeks a year is fine.

Singapore is becoming a playground for the rich. If you are not rich, it is not advisable to come over to Singapore as you are just helping to maintain this playground where their children will be above your children and even you.
So if I get a Singapore residence permit, then I can't bring my spouse for one year?? I'm in!! Kidding (mostly). I would agree with Andrew on his choice of KL. It is not only geographically between Bangkok and Singapore, but it also has a vibe that blends the best of both of these locations. I find Bangkok a bit too gritty, whereas Singapore is a bit too sanitized. KL seems to have enough of the charm of the "grit" without it reaching the critical point of frustration. I'm not sure I could deal with the Graysia weather year-round, so having it as one of several bases makes sense for me as well. I would like to start investing in some property in KL soon. I think it could do very well in the coming decades.

Low cost of living. 13 states to explore, business set us for industrial is better again low cost, food varieties and quality at lower cost, a country of abundance, better quality space & housing, join club members at lower cost etc
There are people who don’t like like getting into debt. Unlike Singaporeans who may have friends and family to help them financially if there are difficulties, non Singapore Citizens mostly have to fend for themselves. I have a friend who hit 41 years old and was recently retrenched in Singapore. He has been trying to find another comparable job for 6 months but has not managed to. Qualified with industry certs that are supposed to be in demand but jobless. Either the economy is really bad or meritocracy is dead or ageism is real. The worst part is he was retrenched on the 3rd day of hospitalisation. My advise to PRs is don’t buy with the expectation that everything will be fine.
It is a lot more costly to have kids in Singapore. The amount of space you can get is also smaller for the income you get which can be an issue when they grow up. Furthermore, it is a very stressful environment for kids to grow up in. Some kids may blame their parents as to why they settled down in Singapore. Especially if they are not that well off and don’t perform exceptionally well in school. Not being able to live a carefree childhood and then suffering when older is a really bad experience one can have. Which explains why many Singaporeans have mental issues and like to pawn / sabotage each other because they can’t view humanity in a positive light.
Ya, I don't think Singapore should have a population of over 6 million or so. It would be overpopulated. Malaysia Johor would be a better choice for young people or worker who looking for affordable place to live.
@@samuellow5803 multiple reasons Samuel...high rentals, wife can't work, uncertainty about ep renewal, pretty good salaries back in India, higher savings back in India etc. India salaries are almost 80 percent of Singapore salaries now. My nephew started career with sgd 5k per month in Hyderabad this year, upon graduating as engineer, just to give you one example. These are the key reasons for most of my Indian friends for going back. Those factors don't apply to me as I am a pr. My reason is growth prospects for my business in India. Lot of people I speak with are not able to recruit Indians to work in Singapore now due to mismatched salary expectations.
In Kuala Terengganu, RM800K is a nice bungalow in a golf ⛳ area, club house with security guard etc. Slow life and slow food. Near to beaches, rainforest and airport. Good banks no traffic jam.
Recently I just talked with a housing agent. Many MNC starts to offer the expat to live in KL and fly to SG once a week for face to face meeting. This is due to too high cost of housing in SG! Amazing trend now.
Just look at the number of old people who still have to struggle to make ends meet. Singaporeans will justify that it is their choice to work. Really? As people get older, they should be enjoying life more and creating as many happy memories as possible before they go. Ageism already starts in Singapore from 40 onwards. I know someone who was retrenched when he was 41 on the 3rd day of hospitalisation. He has a degree from a top local uni with more than 10 years experience in IT. He also kept up with the industry gaining multiple industry certificates that are in demand but he has been jobless for 6 months. The companies here would rather pay fresh grads / few years experience $4 - 6k than to pay this person $6-8k. Meritocracy my foot.
Don’t fall into the trap of a stronger currency because you will definitely not have the same quality of life as a Singapore Citizen unless you are from a well to do background. Not only that, you would be deemed as inferior and they like calling Malaysians JHK selling mixed/economy rice. Don’t ever think that your status at the workplace will be any different because you will just be a number just like any other foreigner in Singapore. A term used a lot in Singapore is no one is indispensable.
"Being small" was definitely the one thing I didn't like about living in S'Pore. Especially because it was before the second link, so the causeway was the only way out for week-ends -- complete with passport control each way.

I agree. Not only that, Singaporeans are an arrogant lot because they think they are the best and others have low IQ/capability. I have interacted with many of them and they think their cognitive ability is superior. They also think that those from other countries especially South East Asia are slow to comprehend them when sometimes their speech is actually incomprehensible. They don’t like to listen to others but when they talk others must listen. It does not make economic sense to setup a business in Singapore if so many workers/employees are from Malaysia. It is better to hire them in Malaysia and they can save on commute time and toll charges. The hours lost can be better spent on leisure and family/friends.
Correct better set up company in Malaysia, the workers dont have to faced the massive jam just to travel to Singapore but return to Malaysia to live. Just pay these workers better salary and they glad to work in Malaysia. That is their fear maybe Malaysians dont have to worked in Singapore if the offer in Malaysia is better.

Singapore only has better marketing plus good for corporate people and tax haven. Malaysia has the better lifestyle by far, so much open space and nature in comparison.
As a singaporean I think u made a good choice, as a westerner.. you are welcomed both side..as long as your place of residence is safe. Malaysia is bigger and there’s more things to do. Sg is just expensive nothing else.
Spore is nice and clean but the life style is too fast and cosy. While Malaysia is a bit slower but not stressing and the people are much more friendly
Singapore is owned by an elite club in the ruling party. It may not seem so but it is. Everything is connected to them and they decide who fluorishes and who doesnt. Its never a level playing field in Singapore.

Singapore isn't the best for everyone and everything, neither is Malaysia. But in my cae, like in yours, Malaysia came out better, far better. And I happen to like it more as well.

Having married a Singaporean, I was privy to the S'pore mindset since 1995. People need to understand that Singapore is one of the few ultra-miraculous cities of the world. They came out of abject poverty under the vision of Lee Kuan Yew (and everyone else's blood sweat tears) to create a financial & logistics superpower in the ASEAN region. I pray for the future of Singapore and it's continuing legacy. PS - I also love KL and those precious Malaysians!

As a Malaysian we hate it there, our country is a dead end for most of us, our currency is low, theres nothing much to do, our visa is garbage and we only recently only changed from a super corrupted and uncaring goverment who use racism to devide the people. Alot of malaysians are also pretty anti-social as that is the way the goverment wants us to be raised.
For us its a prison, leaving malaysia is a blessing even if we have to work our asses off in another country. For a foreigner or somebody who works outside of it though... Malaysia is a pretty decent place.
As a singaporean, it was interesting to hear your view. You touched on this a little and you're right, we have plenty of very high net worth people fighting to come in here, and space is limited, so we are stringent, choosy, and probably don't give the best deals. Cost of living here has absolutely exploded post-covid. Given your circumstances, choosing malaysia over singapore just makes a lot of sense and i honestly agree with it
Stringent and choosy? I see PRs given out to low level (as in low complexity) office workers and even massage ladies.
There are also PRs given to those with dubious qualifications but you can see those who graduated from NUS and NTU being jobless. So much for world class education.
We grant 30k+ new PRs and 20+k new citizenships per year. This number is tiny compared to the actual number of people who are trying to obtain PR and citizenship here. Therefore we are stringent and choosy. Your personal subjective and unsubstantiated anecdotes regarding PRs being given to low quality entrants is neither evidence, nor is it sufficient to invalidate the fact that we are choosy about who we let in here

If Singapore is such a desirable place to live, work and play then more stringent requirements like IELTS and qualifications from top 100 universities should be in place for PR applications. NUS itself had 32k students as at 5 Sep 2022. Divide this by 4 years for simplicity for an honours degree and you have roughly 4K potential PRs every year. Multiply 4K by 100 universities (just assume the same enrolment numbers) and you have 400k potential applicants every year.
Not everyone who studies in other country would want to stay in that country regardless how awesome the country is. There are a lot of factor contributing to it. Family, scholarship boding with home country, circumstances, cost of living, job availability, preference etc. Some country may seems ideal in paperwork but it may not click with some people.

Any legal private company must have Malaysian partners unless you run through Labuan. In Labuan's case you have to pay MUCH more in fees. I know because I've done it.

IMHO. Malaysia is not as organized, not as clean, not as low-crime, not as rich as Singapore. Malaysia has much more friendly and warm people. It has more to explore and has a soul. If you care only about money, then I'd say Singapore. If you want natural culture, places, and an organic feel, then I'd say Malaysia.

Spot on. A concise analysis. Singapore is an excellent place for holding investments and a currency safe haven, but Malaysia definitely wins in terms of lifestyle and cost of living.
as long as you are not earning in Ringgit of cos, if you have loads of cash and is trying to find a place to settle down, countries with cheaper cost of living is ideal, ur 1mil USD for example would last you much long, u can afford 3 storey house, multiple cars, and even a team of servants, from cooks, personal drivers, maids, gardeners..etc, unless u are moving to Malaysia, to get a JOB and work there in maybe KL and find a place to live..
The currency is experiencing a nose dive and many companies have left during the past few years.

It's better that way, not 1st world country as the comedian said, but in Malaysia everything is there, we feel comfortable, food is plenty we can grows food and self sufficient we just need modern way to plant and process, we have oil gas and green energy plentyful especially in the state of Sarawak, we will be the producing hydrogen the biggest in the world, we have many dams that can supply energy to the whole of SEA. Malaysia have everything, people are educated almost all can speaks English and are friendly and well manner and humble. Let's Malaysia just the way its now, we can have a nice home even with garden eventhough we are not that rich like Singaporean. We can have few cars in 1 house. Even my family we have more than 10 cars as each of my children have a least 1 car. So compare to Singapore. We really have a nice and comfort living. So please lah don't compare us Malaysia to other country. Malaysia truly Asia. One things there is no other countries in this world celebrated Hari Raya ,, Chinese New year, Christmas, Gawai, Kamaatan, even Good Friday, Deepavali , Wesak Day etc etc etc. You cannot find that elsewhere. Only Malaysia give every relegions or cultural and races a public holiday and open house on the festival. So Malaysia is a blessed country.

As a Singapore PR whos been living in the country for over 20 years, I have to say the current rental issue has gone bonkers, bordering pure greed. 45 % to 55 % increase from Govt housing ( HDB ) and Condos is a common theme. So much so, I actually have the notion of packing up and leaving back to Malaysia if it continues next year. I don't see the point of paying nearly 55% of my paycheck just to get a roof over my head

I don’t think locals/citizens are “struggling”. Singapore government is taking very good care of the citizens. Knowing that buying home prices have gone up, government is now giving out all kinds of money grants to home buyers. Besides citizens are also getting GST vouches and all kinds of money perks. Out medical bills are largely subsidised by government. Having an efficient and effective government makes all the difference between Singapore and Malaysia...

This is spot on. As a Malaysian, I once contemplated to migrate overseas for better career and income. But I also noticed that the living costs and taxes in these developed countries are very high. I also noticed that the harder you work, the more you make, the more taxes they take.
I cannot accept that I will have to work from Jan to April, just to pay my income tax.
I eventually stayed back in Malaysia, and figured a way out to earn my income from the US. By earning US dollars and living in Malaysia, I think I have the best of both worlds.

There is no perfect place but just a suitable place to live in. My criterias to live especially during retirement are Food, Language, Medical, Weather, People, Lifestyle and of course $$. I may be bias but Malaysia virtually has its all. It caters from budget to luxury segments as far as housing, medical, food and etc. Malaysian generally do not judge what you wear, what you eat and/or what car you drive. Don't be shocked to have common local ordinary millionaires on their T Shirts and Flip Flops although they may be driving a Porsche.. A luxury car be parked at at the roadside to have their favourite street food. That is very normal and common in the Malaysia Culture.
I am from Singapore and I am lucky to be from here as I do not need to relocate to enjoy the bests of Singapore and Malaysia. KL is just five hours by car and Johore is just a bus ride away.
If I take a tour bus to Thailand, Malaysia feels homey to me because the people, language and Food are the same. It is only when I reach Dannok, then I felt I have really arrived at another country.

I am Singaporean and have the best of both worlds. Work in Singapore and relax in Malaysia. Earn the Sing dollar and then stretch the dollar in Malaysia. You can do a lot of things in Malaysia thru the Sing dollar.
Singaporeans can afford to splurge in Malaysia but the trade off is, the cost of living in Singapore is high and not many people can retire for good with their monthly CPF payout.
I am malaysian and born in johor. During my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s, we visited Singapore regularly. The exchange rate was 1 to 1. Many Malaysians go there to shop as I remembered. But it then got more and more expensive due to the currency. OK now back to current time. Singapore has more than 5m people. How long more before the entire island is populated. It will be like hk island. I hate such scenario. Secondly, I heard that more and more hawkers have retired or passed away, taken over by foreigners. We hv such situation in Malaysia but not as bad as singapore. Can you imagine your favourite Chinese food is cooked by a myanmar guy or others? Therefore even Singaporean come to Malaysia to eat authentic cuisine cook by own ethnic groups like malay dishes, indian dishes, Chinese dishes. Most Singaporeans are educated and getting high pay. How many will take over the family hawker stalls from their parents??
Some Hawker stall owners are wealthy are they not? so the children would be happy to continue owning that asset that pays so good? Hard work though

Singapore is one giant city that offers all the positive and negative aspects of a giant city. Malaysia is an actual country that is spread out and has several hubs. Of course you can choose KL as your base but you can also visit Penang and Kota Kinabalu to see places and relax a bit. Malaysia also easily wins the cost of living category. But if you still want to do business in SIngapore, it's always right around the corner.

Live, work and run a business in Singapore for the better part of 25 years. The barrier to entry now is massive and what Andrew doesn't state is that they'll let you open a business and park money here, but they may not give you a right to reside here (that is separate). Also, housing is astronomical especially to rent, buying means down payments that would equal outright owning a home elsewhere, and personal overhead that can include private schools for kids with fees equal to sending them to exclusive colleges in the USA. Not worth it and many expats and companies with foreign employees are beginning to recognize this fact.

Singapore is an island nation with a population of over 6 million people. So, it can get very crowded in some areas especially during the peak hours. That being said, Singapore is very fast paced and a competitive society that prioritize work over family and has the longest working hours in the world at 45 hours per week followed by China at 42 hours per week. It is not a place for a big middle-income family living on budget
Hence why Johor is basically Singapore's backyard, like how Selangor is KL's backyard, work in KL/Singapore, go back home in Selangor/Johor

Singapore is a very expensive place to live with ridculous house/condo prices and rents, hardly a place to raise a family with lack of land, free space, jungle and a 'normal country' life. Malaysia has everything and cheaper by 50~60% and with higher living quality. Even a lowly paid person can own a car. Yes, prices have risen now but that is a worldwide phenomenon. Having just returned from Indonesia, the food and transport prices have increased 50~100% since my last visit in 2018 ! Even a cup of plain coffee at a cafe in Malaysia (USD 0.35) while in say, Medan (big city) is USD1.00 !

I lived in Singapore for more than 7 years until June 2022. It turned to a totalitarian state from 2020 onward forcing every resident to get jabbed up to 4/5 times or get their working visa cancelled. The government went psycho on any reasonable voice that contested the extreme measures they took against the pure blood. I left the country without any regrets. I am looking at a sick nation now with countless health problems, skyrocketing inflation, double real estate price and a broken fearful society.

It is better to start a business in KL/Penang as the talent there is comparable. Why pay about 3x if the employee capability/productivity is only 1.5x at best (if you are talking about the average worker). Office and housing rental in Singapore is also very high. No point enriching the landlords and supporting the rentier economy. Foreigners and PRs also need to pay gst which currently stands at 8% and will go up to 9% in Jan 2024. However, they will not get any gst rebates which Singapore citizens receive.

I think this is a correct analysis. I visited Singapore the same year I visited Malaysia; just before it, actually, and I was indeed very impressed with it but it is considerably more expensive, true enough, as well as being quite a bit busier.
It's a city-state so it's by design, going to have a quite different vibe to it and there is not as much space to move around. The two place are similar in many ways but quite different in others so it'll be up to the individual to decide which type of atmosphere they prefer.
Seeing from a different angle, I like the football sport & stadiums in Malaysia. If you are big fan of football (or soccer as Americans would call it) you are in for a treat here. The local league has passionate supporters and the clubs are well supported. You will see many fans going to the stadium to support their local teams. Its not only the big clubs I am talking about (like JDT, Selangor, KL City etc)...even the smaller clubs like Penang and Sabah have loyal following. The footballing culture and soul is very strong in this country....
1 cocktail at the Zouk in Singapore gets you 6 cocktails in the Zouk KL. And that goes for housing, cars and everything.

Singapore is becoming a playground for the rich. If you are not rich, it is not advisable to come over to Singapore as you are just helping to maintain this playground where their children will be above your children and even you.

I would agree with Andrew on his choice of KL. It is not only geographically between Bangkok and Singapore, but it also has a vibe that blends the best of both of these locations. I find Bangkok a bit too gritty, whereas Singapore is a bit too sanitized. KL seems to have enough of the charm of the "grit" without it reaching the critical point of frustration. I'm not sure I could deal with the Graysia weather year-round, so having it as one of several bases makes sense for me as well.
I would like to start investing in some property in KL soon. I think it could do very well in the coming decades.

No matter WHERE a person is in the world one needs to be smart with one's business deals. Did you properly 'vet' this guy? There are people who don’t like like getting into debt. Unlike Singaporeans who may have friends and family to help them financially if there are difficulties, non Singapore Citizens mostly have to fend for themselves. I have a friend who hit 41 years old and was recently retrenched in Singapore. He has been trying to find another comparable job for 6 months but has not managed to. Qualified with industry certs that are supposed to be in demand but jobless. Either the economy is really bad or meritocracy is dead or ageism is real. The worst part is he was retrenched on the 3rd day of hospitalisation. My advise to PRs is don’t buy with the expectation that everything will be fine.

It is a lot more costly to have kids in Singapore. The amount of space you can get is also smaller for the income you get which can be an issue when they grow up. Furthermore, it is a very stressful environment for kids to grow up in. Some kids may blame their parents as to why they settled down in Singapore. Especially if they are not that well off and don’t perform exceptionally well in school. Not being able to live a carefree childhood and then suffering when older is a really bad experience one can have. Which explains why many Singaporeans have mental issues and like to pawn / sabotage each other because they can’t view humanity in a positive light.

Ya, I don't think Singapore should have a population of over 6 million or so. It would be overpopulated. Malaysia Johor would be a better choice for young people or worker who looking for affordable place to live.

@@samuellow5803 multiple reasons Samuel...high rentals, wife can't work, uncertainty about ep renewal, pretty good salaries back in India, higher savings back in India etc. India salaries are almost 80 percent of Singapore salaries now. My nephew started career with sgd 5k per month in Hyderabad this year, upon graduating as engineer, just to give you one example. These are the key reasons for most of my Indian friends for going back. Those factors don't apply to me as I am a pr. My reason is growth prospects for my business in India. Lot of people I speak with are not able to recruit Indians to work in Singapore now due to mismatched salary expectations.

In Kuala Terengganu, RM800K is a nice bungalow in a golf ⛳ area, club house with security guard etc. Slow life and slow food. Near to beaches, rainforest and airport. Good banks no traffic jam.
Recently I just talked with a housing agent. Many MNC starts to offer the expat to live in KL and fly to SG once a week for face to face meeting. This is due to too high cost of housing in SG! Amazing trend now.

Just look at the number of old people who still have to struggle to make ends meet. Singaporeans will justify that it is their choice to work. Really? As people get older, they should be enjoying life more and creating as many happy memories as possible before they go.
Ageism already starts in Singapore from 40 onwards. I know someone who was retrenched when he was 41 on the 3rd day of hospitalisation. He has a degree from a top local uni with more than 10 years experience in IT. He also kept up with the industry gaining multiple industry certificates that are in demand but he has been jobless for 6 months.
The companies here would rather pay fresh grads / few years experience $4 - 6k than to pay this person $6-8k. Meritocracy my foot.
Don’t fall into the trap of a stronger currency because you will definitely not have the same quality of life as a Singapore Citizen unless you are from a well to do background. Not only that, you would be deemed as inferior and they like calling Malaysians JHK selling mixed/economy rice. Don’t ever think that your status at the workplace will be any different because you will just be a number just like any other foreigner in Singapore. A term used a lot in Singapore is no one is indispensable.
"Being small" was definitely the one thing I didn't like about living in S'Pore. Especially because it was before the second link, so the causeway was the only way out for week-ends -- complete with passport control each way.
Doesn't mind lived in 12 years old house, doesn't care about status and why pay more attitude are type of people I mostly welcome to my hometown KL.

I have interacted with many of them and they think their cognitive ability is superior. They also think that those from other countries especially South East Asia are slow to comprehend them when sometimes their speech is actually incomprehensible. It does not make economic sense to setup a business in Singapore if so many workers/employees are from Malaysia.
It is better to hire them in Malaysia and they can save on commute time and toll charges.
The hours lost can be better spent on leisure and family/friends.
Msians work in Spore mainly for the exchange rate. The SD 1 they earn makes RM 3 + back home.
Correct better set up company in Malaysia, the workers dont have to faced the massive jam just to travel to Singapore but return to Malaysia to live. Just pay these workers better salary and they glad to work in Malaysia. That is their fear maybe Malaysians dont have to worked in Singapore if the offer in Malaysia is better.

Singapore is owned by an elite club in the ruling party. It may not seem so but it is. Everything is connected to them and they decide who fluorishes and who doesnt. Its never a level playing field in Singapore.

Singapore isn't the best for everyone and everything, neither is Malaysia. But in my cae, like in yours, Malaysia came out better, far better. And I happen to like it more as well.

Many Msians come to SG to work. SG salary + SG cost of living, but the savings are 3x when converted to MYD. Man I wish I was Malaysian too.
Malaysia should continue to shelve the HSR project because it will benefit Singapore more than Malaysia. There is no such thing as an equal win-win situation when it comes to Singapore. That is why Singaporeans liked Najib so much that they called him Jib-kor.

Having married a Singaporean, I was privy to the S'pore mindset since 1995.
People need to understand that Singapore is one of the few ultra-miraculous cities of the world. They came out of abject poverty under the vision of Lee Kuan Yew (and everyone else's blood sweat tears) to create a financial & logistics superpower in the ASEAN region.
I pray for the future of Singapore and it's continuing legacy.
