These kind of videos are the kind I prefer. I cannot stand the type of videos that bigger youtubers make, it takes the natural feel out of it. I prefer videos where the person in the video is talking to you as if theyre talking to you directly. Like just a humble face to face conversation with people they can't see. Kinda like how Bob Ross became so popular. It was like he was talking to you directly and showed you in real time how he did his paintings.

First Wool is super underrated for good cold weather gear. Second Valinki are a key part of one of my FAVORITE jokes.
Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, two submarines, Russian and American, come to the surface. The Russian one is old and rusty; the American one is new and sleek matte black. On the Russian one, the crew lounges about, a drunken captain yells at them: "Who threw a valenok on the control board? I'm asking you, who threw a valenok on the control board?!" From the American submarine, a clean-shaven, sober, and smartly-dressed captain yells scornfully: "You know, folks, in America..." The Russian captain dismissively interrupts him: "America??! Ain't no fucking America no more!!" He turns back to his crew "Who threw a valenok on the control board?!"

But you will laugh! I was a naval officer - submariner.

Great video, I love my Valenki wool boots. A lighter weight version is to buy the Valenki Wool Boots without the rubber outsole. Wear the boots around the house to get them to mold to your foot. After they are molded to your foot you can buy a can of spray flex seal and coat the bottoms of the boots. This will seal the bottoms from water and still not have the weight of the rubber soles. Thanks for these videos Lars!!!

Lars, there is nothing wrong with "heavy" if it keeps you warm and dry. I once had to work for a week in February on the Lake Eire shore. Not as cold as you are accustomed to, but certainly cold enough for me. My helper kept bragging about his new, lightweight, Gortex boots and mocking at my old-fashioned, felt-lined, HEAVY Sorels. He stopped laughing midweek when one of his boots started leaking and the sole separated from the upper.

The "zek" was hesitant in putting them by the stove because by morning they could have been stolen and then he's without them. I also love my German Military Wool Pants! Wool has a low thermal conductivity.
Therefore, heat is stored inside and negative temperature outside. This means that the snow does not melt and the shoes do not get wet.

Like one of my countrymen already commented, these are "huopatossut" in Finland. "Felt slippers" is the direct translation. My winter boots are quite heavy also, but I can see from the build of those Valinki they outweigh mine by a wide margin! Extra weight = more exercise for the legs, eh? Have a good(rest of the)vacation Lars! My vacation lasts until the 7th which is nice.
PS. This video didn't suck, don't worry. Don't be too hard on yourself, though I know it's a bit of a "character flaw" in Northern European countries and their denizens(even those now living in Russia). ;) I certainly can relate to being too harsh on oneself.

Enjoyed the review. Those boots look very warm. Also, what axe was that on the table? Maybe it was just a teaser? And, you're videos are always enjoyable. Thank you and Happy New Year to you and the whole Survival Russia family!

Happy New Year Lars and family! I am very excited for more Siberian exploration. And do not be concerned with video quality, the year has only just begun and each will be better than the last.

Nice! Love those wool boots, both newer and older. Gulag, stalag... what's the difference. Thanks for doing a bunch of videos in your holiday time, for me on the last 5 years it's the first time I get no extra time off after Christmas. I managed a couple videos but just short ones. Take care Lars!

My new year kind of sucks so far, wish I was in Russia helping you make videos and wearing a pair of those boots.

Funny, I was considering making some sort of wool felt boot with old car tire tread glued on. Wish I could find patterns or plans for making such warm boots. I considered copying tall Indian mocassins. The video was good, could have used more light though.

Maybe you could have a history day show along with survival ?

It would be nice to see a test at -30 C with a Sorrel booth on the left foot and a rubber-soled felt booth on the right foot.
    Just an idea.

Hallo Lars, Happy New Year to you and your family. We had similiar Winterboots in the East German army where I had to serve as conscript. The lower part was leather outside, for wet weather, but the wool felt went all the way round the foot. These were very warm and also very heavy. (Knobelbecher)
