- The Panasonic GH5 has incredible video record quality and settings for shooting cinematic style video. Settings like Cinema 4K 422 10bit All-I recording allows GH5 video shooters to capture cinema style video and have great color control in editing. I'm definitely more comfortable with some of these GH5 record settings over other ones but here's a quick look at them.

This was one of the best videos out there explaining these settings!
Great break down and video! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Thanks for explaining all this stuff. You are the man.
Very informative thanks
Hey Caleb - have watched some of your videos today for the first time, and you ROCK!! :-)
You rock!
Love this video. Sometimes I feel like I miss certain things cause I get comfortable shooting in the same rec quality
yeah it's easy to stay in one range. it definitely varies on the type of project i'm working on.
Beautiful explanation as always Caleb!
Thanks again!
Thanks for the insight. By the way, I really like your commitment to aid non - profit orignasations with your work. Big thumbs up!

I'm #TeamCH all day, twice on Sundays lol
Exactly!! :-)
Just bought a second hand GH5 and waiting for it to come, presently using the G7 and looking forward to the bump in options and quality.
Still will use the G7 as my b cam as I love the little thing
Saved me thanks so much. Although when i was filming and had this accidently on it didn't record any audio.
Actually it did sorry just couldn't hear it until turned that off. phew!
Excellent video, have learned some things/tips that i will be adopting in my workflow. In regards to All-I, it does create large files as each frame recorded has all the data/info recorded from the sensor. In that sense you do need a pretty powerful computer to process/edit the files. However, because each frame has all the data, the files are less compressed than the other formats making it easier for the computer to process. All-I produces the best quality unedited video at the expense of large files (about 3x larger than the other formats)
However the difference is almost not visible (actually just not visible) in normal scenarios. recording sports or moving stuff, it may become visible.
Your uploads of the GH5 are so reassuring. I use it daily thinking, “Does everyone know this thing is THIS good?”
such a great camera! even still
Useful . Thank u
Welcome 😊
Great stuff!
thanks dood!
I don't why the dislikes are for. Well explained brother. Very useful for me to learn about this. Thank you
GH5 is the best camera in range. Other companies are jus catching up. Love these gh5 videos man.
🙌🙌 thanks for watching!
great work..!
Thanks a lot!
Ran into this issue recently, some of you might didn't know yet. When working with the free version of Davinci Resolve, the 10bit files from the GH5(s) are not accepted. You need to convert them to e.g. ProRes (as I did). Thanks again for all the useful GH5 info Caleb. Your videos are great my man!
Thanks for the info!
Thks for video. Could you show or explain how to make hyperlapse video on GH5!? 😅
Shooting outside of the US seems to be a limiting factor as there are fewer codecs to choose from. Will there be a lot of issues when playing on TV, computer screen etc if using NTSC but playing in Europe or Asia given the modern refresh rates?
Great video, thank you! Kind of just a technicality think, but I noticed you say "megabytes per second" when it should be "megabits per second". 8 bits in a byte, so it's a significant difference in the file size. I have noticed a lot of UA-camrs who are accidentally referencing it this way and from what I understand looking at the capitalization of the letters will usually tell you: Uppercase as in MB would be megabytes and Mb is megabits. Usually camera settings are in megabits whereas SD cards are in megabytes.
I'm a Korean video producer. I also use GH5S, and your videos were so helpful, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
how to record the display screen info into the sd recording? I want to keep track of what iso, shutter, and aperture I'm using.. any ideas? hopefully other than external recording?
hey, what aspect ratios can the gh5 record in?
The C4K 10 Bit how much of a difference when it comes to editing on your computer.
Is there loss of image quality using the 4K Long GOP at 150Mbps, as opposed to the ALL-I at 400Mbps? Good video. Thank you.
*Awesome video!* 😍 I love the way you put your thoughts into it. I'll have to try something like this also on my channel 🤔 Hopefully it will look as good as your video 😊 Thank you for the inspiration 🙌 *_-Felix_*
awesome dood. 🙌 keep crushin it.
Your lighting setup is IT. Can you share it with us?
Hi caleb thank for this new vid! Thank to make us better! Hope everything fine for you! I think in pal we dont have c4k. Need to check that Xd
sometime i wanna try pal just for the fun of it to get a little taste of europe! 😂
@@CalebHoover after checking yesterday in PAL we don't hace those C4k option... so i went yesterday for the cinema profile ;) i like those kind of video, so people can check what they have and compare. it s really true that personnaly i become better learning from you but the hardest think now is those color correction, i bougth your Lut need to try it's so many haha, btw take care and waiting for your next vid :)
Thanks. I shoot in the MP4 LPCM mode because it gives me the best still pictures, but when I record (mainly indoors) the frame gets cut on top and bottom. What is the best setting so i have a square frame rather than long horizontal?
Hi. If you want to have square like video the you have to switch to anamorphic mode.
Great breakdown Caleb this is definitely helpful because I’m considering changing from my Sony a6400 setup to the gh5.
Glad it was helpful!
I made exactly that change and couldn’t be happier. Miss the fantastic AF though but except for this the GH5 plays in a totally different league.
@@wangmedia yeah I do LOVE that autofocus but I’m getting more into the post process n the 4.2.0 8 bit just doesn’t do well the higher codecs on the gh5 is very appealing plus that ibis!
I would not be able to explain the reasons why exactly BUT i have seen some technical reviews of the available shooting modes on the GH5 and in order from best to worst, in terms of image quality (how much you can alter colors and how great dynamic range can be) the 4k 400mbs comes first obviously but the 4k 8bit 100mbs comes in second and 150mbs comes pretty much last and it all as to do with the relation between mbs and bits per second of recording.
Another great option would be 1080p 200mbs.
that's really interesting! i've been happy with 150 cuz i feel like i get pretty good color and turnaround is really fast
That is interesting. I have been shooting 4 k 8 bit 100 alot, due to my free resolve limitations. Any links to check up on that analisys?
@@speedsweets67 that is not the link I had looked into but it seems to lead to the same conclusions wolfcrow.com/thoughts-on-comparing-8-bit-and-10-bit-footage-from-the-panasonic-gh5/
@@simonmonty7171 thx for your swift reply. Anxious to see
@@speedsweets67 didn't take the time to read everything for that new link so unsure if all the details are confirming what I initially said but I can assure you that the post I was referring to was extremely sound.
Any recommendations on flashes to get for the GH5?
i don't do any photography with it so im not totally sure.
If I understand correctly, Is that MP4 HEVC better than MOV?!
I have a GH5S what is the best rec format ?!
mp4 is a bit more compressed but they are both really good. mov more of an apple quicktime format but yeah both are good
I have the GH5 MkII. Fewer recording formats are available especially in MP4. I am still a bit confused as per which frame rate to use. I live in Asia and would like to have a cinematic look. I was hoping to shoot in 24 fps, sometimes in 30 fps (to slowdown to 24) and higher frame rates (for slowmo) but Asia should be 25 fps....
There is too much emphasis on 24p as a 'cinematic' framerate. 25p looks perfectly fine as long as you use a 180" shutter angle, ie., 1/50th of a second. As you're in a 50hz region, artificial light will appear to flicker if you shoot at 24p, so stick with 25p.
Is a Panasonic g85 a good camera for film? Would you recommend one that would be better
yeah the g85 is a great camera!
For the price the G85 is great so is the GX80 for about half the price of G85. If you have the budget I would look at a used G9.
@@wangmedia thanks ,I'm looking for a camera from around 700$ - $800 which should come with a kit lens.
may be rather trivial of a question as it doesnt strictly pertain to the subject of the titled video but it is gh5 related and if anybody can help me in anyway im so thankful! currently for some reason i dont know what it is i may be overlooking or doing wrong but when opening stabilizer option in menu it does not allow me the option to turn it on - anyone at all, would appreciate it immensely
not sure why it's doing that. maybe has something to do with the lens? 🤷♂️
sweet first like and first comment :) did I win a 25mm 1.7 Caleb ?? hahahaha
Lol
😂 i wish i could giveaway something with every video!
@@CalebHoover hahahaha bro, really enjoy your channel :). keep the vids coming, looking forward to 2021 on your channel. Happy New Year to you and the family bro :).
I bought my GH5 a few months ago and used/ use your videos a lot. Question is, I initially set my Rec Format to MOV but soon found out that windows doesn't support that without downloading a file conversion software. Which I'm not a fan of. So what other format would you recommend? I'm not doing any professional work, just making videos for my lil You Tube channel. I'm using Power director 365 software.
You did mention MP4, which I think works well for what I'm doing. I'm wondering if there are other options you might have?
Here's the link of a 6 min video I did the other day with my GH5. Settings: Nat, MP4 @ 4k-24p.

I also need to know if all I is better than long gop
all i is better quality but long gop is still really good. i think all i is 400mbs so you'll need a fast sd card
all intra is actually more edtitable than lgop…
All i is better for your pc to edit. 😂
