Man, I remember when USB 1.0 first came out and getting my first flash drive and my jaw hanging at how fast i could copy files to it back then LOL
hahhahahahhaha just like when dial up released. The fact that we could connect to the internet lol
Being able to store 200x more data than floppies on a stick smaller than a highlighter was already jaw hanging for me.
I also have the 4TB version of this drive, and I get 830 read and 800 write using the included USB-C cable on the back ports on my Mac Studio. Personally I don't think the improvement from buying a Thunderbolt 4 cable is worth it, since it's already more than fast enough for what I'm using it for, but I didn't realize there would be any speed difference at all, so that's interesting. Crazy how fast the internal SSD on our Mac Studios is, huh?
If I would have known the results beforehand, I may have not purchased the cable (or at least two of them).
However, the included cable is quite short and if a new cable gives me a bit of a slight speed improvement, then that's a bonus.

You’re welcome, I got one on sale at Costco and the other on Black Friday. I use them for holding my video projects and they are fast enough for me. Sure beats the heck out of my old spinning hard drive!

As a stills photographer, the 200+ Mb/s on my USB 3.0 hard drives is plenty fast. But sure, if you buy a USB SSD for the speed - you should also get the advertised speed.
I had one of these SanDisk drives for awhile, comparing it to the Samsung T7. For my purposes, transfer speeds were slightly less of an issue than the odd physical design of the SanDisk itself.
The USB-C port was on a curved surface that prevented a snug fit for the cable, which made me wonder what the design team had been smoking. The rubberized case was handsome, but also a dust magnet. And the drive got a lot warmer than the Samsung.
Sold the thing on eBay a few months ago. I'll stick with the T7.

Agreed this is sad how manufacturers do this to customers. I just bought the Samsung T7 Shield. It's a USB 3.2 Gen 2 external drive. My MacBook Pro M1 Max has TB4/USB4 ports and gets Write speeds of 860 MB/s and Read speeds of 700 MB/s. I tried a TB4 cable from OWC and there was no difference. Like the guy mentioned in the video I found out that the port on the computer has to be USB 3.2 Gen 2 in order to get the advertised 1050 speeds. I have seen some PC laptops with this port and they got the advertised speeds. I think these external storage drive companies can do a better job than this. Nobody can get the perfect computer to support these drives as advertised and have all the other features they need in a computer.
You get what you pay for. If you want the best speeds, you need to ditch usb c altogether and get a true thunderbolt drive. USB C is kind of a joke or “a bag of hurt” as Steve Jobs would put it. But as USB 4 drives become more prevalent, the situation might improve somewhat.

may I know if the Disk Volume type will affect the speed? they come as ExFat but I formatted to APFS as I usually did for all my disks
The Apple Silicon has a well known problem with the USB 3 ports. They cannot achieve the full 10Gb/s bandwidth that they should.
When checking the About This Mac system report on my M1 Macbook Air, it clearly calls the USB ports USB 3.1, NOT USB 3.2, but it does specity 10Gb/s max speed. They definitely cannot support 3.2 gen 2x2 to get 20Gb/s. I do get speeds beyond 5Gb/s, just not all the way to 10. My speeds were like the speeds shown in the video when connected to the front ports.
As far as the Thunderbolt 4 ports, they support USB 4 but believe it or not, USB 4 does NOT require compaibility with 3.2 gen2x2 (20Gb/s), only 3.2 gen 2 (10Gb/s)

Testing with BM Disk Speed Test isn't the same as testing large files where throttling will no doubt happen.
Steve, thank you for the enlightening video. I have an older version of the same SSD in a 2TB size, and I was totally unaware a speed gain could be had merely by swapping cables (when used on a modern Mac with USB4 and TB4). I would like to clarify one point though. I visited your Amazon link for the UANTIN cable, and it says it is USB4 cable that is merely "compatible with TB4." Kind of confusing, but USB4 (ver1) isn't the same as TB4. USB4 (ver1) guarantees a minimum speed of 20Gb/s (with short cables) while TB4 guarantees 40Gb/s. So if you had a fast enough SSD, a TB4 cable would beat a USB4 (ver1) cable. Sadly, a USB4 ver2 has been announced which adds more confusing to things. I watched your video a couple times but I wasn't clear on whether the speeds using the UANTIN cable (USB4) matched that of the Cable Matters (TB4). Were speeds the same with both cables?
Thanks! I can't speak to the compatibility of the TB4 cables on TB4 devices, as I don't have any. However, as I mentioned in the video, there was no major speed difference between the cheapo UANTIN cable and the CableMatters TB4 cable... at least in this scenario. Maybe because this USB drive isn't pushing the cable to it's limits, but for $10 USD it's a low price to pay for a good speed boost on these USB-C drives.
I agree, the USB spec seems to keep getting more and more confusing, I can't imagine a non-techy person trying to make sense of it all.
i mannaged 950mb on a usbc with loads a pc ram 32gig and a i7 processor my laptop i5 procesor same usbc i got 1/2 to them speeds ? on windows 11 pro on the i7 procesors and windows home on laptop something dont seem right but not conplaining

Hi. I have the 1Tb Sandisk Extreme SSD. I lost the original USB-C cable. I use a random one and I only have 40 MB upload and 40 download. Could that be the problem?

Not all USB-C cables are designed for fast data transfer. I would get another cable guaranteed to be a fast cable.

Hello Steve, I apologize if my question sounds naive. I’m wondering if utilizing the password protection tool to encrypt my file could potentially affect the speed at which files are read and written?
I would assume any encryption would slow things down. However, I didn’t enable any type of feature like that, and I don’t believe it was enabled out of the box.
so should i use a SCSI hard drive instead of this SSD? :P

Your machine may differ, but plugging the drive into a Thunderbolt (not a USB-C) port, may produce faster speeds.
Dude can you do the same test with these cables on pro version disk?
I’m not going to buy one because of their faults, but if a friend loans me one - sure.
@@Mac84 I don’t know the regular SanDisk speed, but the pro 4TB also has 980 mb/s speed with thunderbolt. If you format to mac file system it’s a bit faster but still I’m satisfied with the disk. Haha :D
WARNING: If you have one of these SANDISK SSD EXtreme from Costco 1 TB drives, you better back it up, better yet return it if it has been less than 90 days. These are crashing at a huge rate. Also the SN on the back becomes unreadable after a few months on your shelf. Fun times out there.
I keep mine backed up as I’ve heard bad things. Mine weren’t eligible for the recent firmware update but it still makes me wonder…
Man, why you didn't post a screenshots from System Information, which shows what mode the ports are?
I honestly didn't know this was a thing. This is my first system with built-in USB 3 or Thunderbolt higher than v1. Interestingly enough, the SSD (when plugged into the TB4 port) doesn't show up. However, System Info/Profiler shows it under the USB 3.1 bus.
I suppose my assumption about it using USB 4 capabilities was incorrect. Although it's interesting that it runs faster on the back TV4 ports, even when it's still listed as being in USB 3.1 mode.

Also, USB devices will always be under USB bus, even when plugged into Thunderbolt port - that's by definition.
Hello from France. I don't understand, my sandisk extreme of 2TB (with the original cable) does not exceed 400! I specify that it is on a mac mini m2 pro! apple really has a problem!!!!!
Are you also using the Black Magic software with the same stress settings? Have you tried another port or cable? Very odd!
Yes black magic test, both ports same results
remember to disable Spotlight indexing on the external disk

My port is usb 3.2 gen 1 (usb A). My speed of scandisk extrem pro 500G is about 30M/s only. Is there any usb A to usb C cable support fast speed?
