Man I am so so glad I went to school in upstate NY, to a good district. The “worst” school, the middle school (6th 7th 8th grade) was renovated while I went to school there and now it is much much better.

i have visited many schools in rural south african townships, like in the Western Cape and Gauteng regions, to install wireless modems and setup wifi for the school (funded by community donations). the kids are lucky if they have chairs to sit on and desks to write on. the buildings dont have electricity usually, so a car battery with a single small solar panel is the only electricity a lot of the times (once again, provided via donations). the kids of 1st world countries have so much to be grateful for and it's a shame that the governments of many countries just don't prioritize education the way that they should (both of our countries are good examples).

Our support for foreign nations is typically in the form of specific military materials. When you see that we've given like $60B to Ukraine, the president didn't just write a check that says "60 Billion dollars to Ukraine" 😂 We send weapons, gear, and training, so the numbers you see are the overall value of those things. So unless you think our middle schools have need of balistic missiles, it really isn't relevant at all.
I can see that there could be knowledge gaps for the custodial staff, but, a lot of these are just... Why is there uncleaned mould? Why is there unfinished walls? Why is there an inaccessible basement? Why did no-one do daily checks of the school over breaks? etc etc If the custodial staff isn't doing it, you need to do it yourself. I do agree the solution is ground up re-do, but the complacency will just destroy the next place too.
