Great you're into the networking stuff now! With the CLI, it's similar to Cisco's IOS so if you need to use it again, when you're typing out the commands you don't have to write the whole thing - for example enable can be shortened to "en" or show to "sh" About the TFTP, most large network solutions will already have a TFTP server up for PXE, firmware etc so it makes sense that they would be telling you to use the TFTP server. Excited to see what you do with all of those ports though! 😁
I knew that was something that had to exist but I didn't know the name of it and hadn't looked into it yet. I will definitely have to set that up, thanks!
technically teaming and bonding are two different things. Strictly speaking, to increase the speed, one uses something that's called trunking. Which basically means - depending on the mode configured, that packages are send either from two mac-adresses to one, or vice versa (or both) and TCP "puts" those packages back together. Considering your XServe has PCIe Slots, you're better of switching that USB 3.0 Card to a 10GB nic and use that connection. Most, if not all switches let you configure those 10GB SFPs rather freely, so you can use them as "normal" ports.
AkBKukU Thanks for replying :) Ah, that's good. I was wondering if those extra entries, rather than being some kind of virtual LAN setup, were just the extra ports you mentioned earlier in the video.
As someone with knowledge of Cisco networking switches, this is highly educational on the matter of what has been standardized in the world of switches vs what differences exist between the hardware and software.
I've replaced fans in certain switches with low noise versions. You'll have to check the usual stuff like voltage, current use, plus whether they actually shift enough air. Assuming you don't want to hack a massive hole in the switch, you can potentially double up the fans and/or ensure your rack has good and silent airflow. In my home I have the network gear relatively near my bedroom, so temperature controlled fans are critical and massively help. Thanks for the video :) I'd love to have 10G SFP+ one day, so far only 1G throughout the house but I don't do video editing :)
I just got a couple nice 3com switches. Only gigabit, though. Each has two fiber ports, but they're 1 Gigabit. Each has two expansion modules, and each expansion module can have up to two 10GbE fiber ports. Of course, those run $300+ on eBay. Each. In fact, I saw a _switch_ with the module pre-installed for less than some sellers were trying to get for it.
When the switch is loud it is insanely loud. So I wanted to cut the max fan speed since I'll be running this thing at 6% capacity for a while. The xserve at full blow doesn't come close to the switch.
Ever thought of doing some videos like setting up the TFTP etc? Although you point out you're not a network admin, you've still got a lot of knowledge to impart and I think it's a shame when things are left as footnotes.
Installing TFTP really didn't take much time for me so I didn't think to cover something like that. For stuff like that I end up preferring written instructions. Maybe someday I'll have something like that on this or another channel, it's hard to say what the future holds.
HorseTaco I assumed those would control the desired temperature range. Sort of like setting it as “keep the CPU between (min) and (max) temp by adjusting the fan.” I’m just guessing since I didn’t read any documentation. Plus that UI isn’t helping much.
I have a ProLiant 380. That thing sounds like a freaking jet plane. I tried running it in our basement, but my wife did NOT approve :) Do you have any suggestions for lowering the noise? I guess I might have to do some hardware mods to the fans to lower their speeds :)
I've been trying to unload a DL380 G4 and a whole pile of DL360 G4s for some time now. Can't seem to get anyone to take 'em, even for free or cost of shipping!
It's hard to explain. I've always preferred the idea of a pen input when I didn't have one. And when I did finally get one it was everything I ever hoped it would be. It's better ergonomi, lighter, and it is positioned definitively rather than relatively. For me it just "clicks". I may do a video about this more in the future and showcase a bunch of different drawing pads I have for older systems.
Great idea! Another would be about drivers on Linux. Because I bought mine just to find Wizardpen (driver) is not compiled for any new system and I have to spend a few hours doing and configuring it. And I still can't get it to work.
Vxworks version whatever is just an embedded OS. So it depends on how that image happened to be built. It's entirely possible thar Quanta built a version with the later vxworks that's fully compatible.
That's all useful info, thanks! I would have guessed it was something that Quanta didn't make themselves and I believe the web GUI is FASTPATH so they didn't make that either. I didn't know it was quite so open and plug 'n play though. I just did a tiny bit of research and I'm surprised that this uses an RTOS not a unix-like derivative.
1:58 you totally should have said that in a hacker voice. "I'M IN... to my server" ;-) also I'm guessing the reason why everyone says "use tftp" is for two main reasons: it's a lowest common denominator, tftp is available on pretty much every *nix, even if booted into single user mode, whereas sftp/etc may not be.; and also (and maybe more to the point) it's old school, that's what all the graybeards are used to. ;-)
I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Previously when I export my videos I have been rendering as JPEGs compressed to 80%, but I've recently stepped it up to 90%.
I almost bought one of those a few months, back. I decided to spend a little more, and get a MikroTik switch. It's only 24 ports,, and its "fabric" isn't as fast, but it does have two 10Gb sfp+ interfaces, and it runs off a wall wart. And it's silent, except it's mounted next to a loud server, so who cares. Depending on your electricity cost, one is a better deal than the other, provided you aren't pushing massive traffic through the switch (in that case, your switch definitely wins).
I can't really say, I got mine for ~$20, so for me it was a no brainier. It wasn't something I did research on, the decision making process for the purchase was just "This is a 48 port Gb switch for ~$20. I'll take it" so I really had no idea what I was getting into. (Again, I'm not a network admin).
I have an apple ipad with more processing power than those proliant g4s. You can pick up a g7 for $200-300 with modern features like remote management.
Cisco IOS is basically the standard that all other corporate grade network equipment follows. The wireless kit that I monitor as part of my job uses Cisco IOS commands.
Dude yes. Every time I see an appliance that makes you type "enable" I'm like... ugh... fine, "mother may I" do the stuff I already logged in as admin to do... IOS mimicry is just a security blanket for people who can't progress past 1990s mentality and syntax. It's like if everyone were still using "dir /p" to manage their Google Drive contents. Move on! :-) There's better stuff out there. Like Junos.
this switch supports a mode where the ports can be split into 2 100 mb connections doubleing the port count which will need a splitter cable that splits the 1 port to 2 "different" ports and custom firmware so that is why you saw so many ports that are disabled in the custom firmware that someone installed to it
Those ports you say are 10Gb are actually for SFP modules that add various other capabilities such as fibre connections. Personally I prefer using the command line to a web interface as it allows for much more control over configuration.
David Richmond No.. what was going through the us governmemt heads man.. Why use a obsolete temperature scale, while the rest of the world uses a best and universal one? I mean i was even in favour of everybody using kelvin, but at least celsius is a decent scale. Same with inches, a huge measure, doesnt make any sense to use that anymore... Go to use centimeters and milimeters. Way more precise and use the logic, and no brainer decimal format (0.1-100, etc), instead of this bizarre fractions (1 and 1/4, etc).
David Richmond Really? Wow thats pretty bad. Im sorry, i read just celsius, and like many americans i've seen them complaining about celsius idk why. Anyways they really should revise the interface before releasing it.
I got a pretty getto network setup, I got a crazy wifi card in my computer I spent a lot of money on, But I often work on computers in the same room, My desktop always has about 70 - 80% signal strength while a laptop may not even pick up the wifi at all, can't run wires in the house (renting). So I use my main PC to share internet threw my ethernet port and it goes to my 10 port 1Gb switch, so I got ethernet for the computers I work on, works really well, a lot better than I thought it would.
Switches like this make me jelly. All I have is a shitty poe Nortel switch which only configuration is a shitty java applet. Though its gigabit and 24 ports of PoE and 24 ports of non-poe for only $20
I have spent a total of $0 on servers. So I can't complain about what I've got. These were all given to me and the xserve does the job pretty well for now. It will be replaced one day, but it's a very low priority for me.
Becko Well.. it isnt (or at least wasnt around 2011-2013) for kids. Actually it was for anyone who wanted to play. But as many things, youtube, media, and the stores ruined it... Tranformed into a cancer kids product with too many shit like 's*x mod in minecraft" or animations in minecraft or all those crappy vids about it. Idk in english but in portuguese there even is a nutella bathtub in minecraft, so nowdays it got a very bad reputation...
Great you're into the networking stuff now!

Yeah, for show version he could have used sh ver
$20 at Goodwill for that cabinet? I'm super jealous.
2004 xeon? Netburst? Its a hairdryer
Nearly as fast as one too
probably uses as much power as one too
If any of your servers have multiple Gigabit ports you should look into teaming, most managed switches should support it.
I knew that was something that had to exist but I didn't know the name of it and hadn't looked into it yet. I will definitely have to set that up, thanks!
Thats what i was thinking when I saw how many ports it had, though as your typical power user I dont have much experience with IT and Networking.
In the linux world it is called a "bond". You will not likely benefit any speed improvement but you will have link redundancy.
technically teaming and bonding are two different things. Strictly speaking, to increase the speed, one uses something that's called trunking. Which basically means - depending on the mode configured, that packages are send either from two mac-adresses to one, or vice versa (or both) and TCP "puts" those packages back together. Most, if not all switches let you configure those 10GB SFPs rather freely, so you can use them as "normal" ports.
Are you still seeing all those phantom ports with the new old firmware?
I knew I forgot to do something! It does only list 50 ports with the new firmware.
AkBKukU Thanks for replying :)
Ah, that's good. I was wondering if those extra entries, rather than being some kind of virtual LAN setup, were just the extra ports you mentioned earlier in the video.
I think those are ports on other switches that could be connected via the 10g ports or SFP. I would imagine the config would show that.
As someone with knowledge of Cisco networking switches, this is highly educational on the matter of what has been standardized in the world of switches vs what differences exist between the hardware and software.
The 10 minute video rendering sounds like a space ship taking off
747 more like
Swapping to some Noctua 40mm fans would be interesting.
So was more like VxDon'tWorks when you got it, right?
are you the new justin y or whatever

Why did you spend all that time trying to change the fan settings when it’ll be next to an xserv anyway...?
When the switch is loud it is insanely loud. So I wanted to cut the max fan speed since I'll be running this thing at 6% capacity for a while. The xserve at full blow doesn't come close to the switch.
because the noise quickly adds up. have you even been in a server room?
There is a reason server staff needs noise cancelling headphones.
Ever thought of doing some videos like setting up the TFTP etc? Although you point out you're not a network admin, you've still got a lot of knowledge to impart and I think it's a shame when things are left as footnotes.

If you want to make the fan speed slower so it's quieter, make the maximum CPU temp higher. :)
I tried that, it didn't make a difference.
The minimum temperature that is. Maybe set that to 40°?
Malto Nitho that would ramp your fans up, no? Maximum would set fan speed
HorseTaco I assumed those would control the desired temperature range. Sort of like setting it as “keep the CPU between (min) and (max) temp by adjusting the fan.” I’m just guessing since I didn’t read any documentation. Plus that UI isn’t helping much.

In the past I made a carpeted air intake&exhaust vents for it to try and muffle the sound. Servers are just loud and not really meant for home use.
Are the bottom XServe DDR2 ECC? I have a boatload of it lying around (Note: HP branded, but they'll prob work)
when I heard tftp first thing I thought was "why not just use SCP?!?!" ...sure enough... yep
Colin Stuart that makes me think of the creepypasta site
I've been trying to unload a DL380 G4 and a whole pile of DL360 G4s for some time now. Can't seem to get anyone to take 'em, even for free or cost of shipping!
Why do you use a wacom tablet instead of a regular mouse?
It's hard to explain. I've always preferred the idea of a pen input when I didn't have one. And when I did finally get one it was everything I ever hoped it would be. It's better ergonomi, lighter, and it is positioned definitively rather than relatively. For me it just "clicks". could we get a tour of the storage room?
Thanks for this video. I'm clueless about servers. I bought a R710 to goof around with; freeNAS, Plex, VMs, etc. Been thinking about a managed switch.
You want some HP DL380 G6 servers? I have so many, I'm using them as furniture. I've got a bunch of unused gbit switches too.
While I would love to take some off your hands, shipping would probably be rather high for those. So far I've got all my servers locally.
Vxworks version whatever is just an embedded OS. So it depends on how that image happened to be built. It's entirely possible thar Quanta built a version with the later vxworks that's fully compatible.
I built a version of vxworks a couple days ago. For a completely different architecture, mind you (an embedded system that my company makes).
The web interface isn't actually part of vxworks (beyond the network stack). It's an app that Quanta wrote that runs under vxworks.

What quality controll do you use in that 60fps video in the end?
I'm not quite sure what you are asking.
Previously when I export my videos I have been rendering as JPEGs compressed to 80%, but I've recently stepped it up to 90%.
Awesome video as always

BTW, I still haven't decided if I made the "right" choice. Both are a good solution.
I can't really say, I got mine for ~$20, so for me it was a no brainier. I have an apple ipad with more processing power than those proliant g4s. You can pick up a g7 for $200-300 with modern features like remote management.
that switch command line reminds me totally of Cisco IOS, even some of the commands
A lot of switch brands mimic IOS.
Cisco IOS is basically the standard that all other corporate grade network equipment follows. The wireless kit that I monitor as part of my job uses Cisco IOS commands.
Unfortunately a lot of the ones that try to mimic IOS do it warts and all. Give me junos any day over that.
David Richmond it's good to see another junos fan.
Dude yes. Every time I see an appliance that makes you type "enable" I'm like... ugh... fine, "mother may I" do the stuff I already logged in as admin to do...

That noise is pretty ridiculous... It would probably be somewhere in a chest or something, still...

I bet this guy is using Ubuntu Server. Nice!
akbkuku why are you buying such trash.... get a cheap g6/g7... they are literaly being trown away :)

Neat.
You are, Ubuntu Console Hacker!.
Sounds like dragua1
I’m surprised that has a ten gigabit ports
Just change the fans :P
minecraft server? really? :D
Becko why not?
Because he doesn't sounds 13 years old. I mean its a very good game i played A LOT with it before.
Becko Well.. it isnt (or at least wasnt around 2011-2013) for kids. Actually it was for anyone who wanted to play.
