I also lost track of a daughter I never knew or found when I returned to search for my lady. I have grown old and helpless trying to find her. God how I love Erlangen, how I would love to go there one more time before I die. I love the German people and admire their culture.

I've just stumbled upon your wonderful comment and I want to say that Erlangen is, in my eyes, not as great as it used to be. There are so many people in the downtown area nowadays that I and my friends and family most avoid the "hotspots". That being said, Erlangen is still more calm and easy going that any other city in the area. And I'm obviously biased since I grew up here while more and more people are actually from other cities in Germany, so I might look at things differently than others do.
Regarding your "lady" and your daughter, I suggest that you contact the U.S. embassy in Munich. They could then ask the Erlangen town hall to do some research. Granted, you'd need to tell them the full name of your ex-partner and/or your daughter. Alternatively, you could contact them by yourself. Since there is a Meldebehörde where every permanent inhabitant of the city needs to register, I'm sure they could help you out in finding your daughter.

Und ganz ehrlich... ich vermisse es so sehr. Die Grande Galerie mit dem Obletter, der alte Kaufhof, der alte Horten. Moderate Menschenmengen auf den Straßen... DAS ist für mich Erlangen. Nicht diese völlig überfüllte und im Verkehrschaos erstickende Kleinstgroßstadt, die heute überall aus allen Nähten platzt. Wo ein WG-Zimmer so viel kostet wie anderswo ganze Wohnungen. Wenn man morgens als Radfahrer zur Arbeit fährt und am Bahnhofplatz erstmal 5 Minuten stehenbleiben muss, weil die Züge ungefähr 500 Leute ausgespuckt haben, die sich in die Innenstadt ergießen, dann hat das nicht mehr viel mit dem Erlangen zu tun, in dem ich groß geworden bin. Schade!
In der Tat, es war eine sehr schoene Zeit mit Horten und Quelle, statt Amazon und eBay :-)
Grande Galerie war der Anfangsmist und jetzt die Arcaden, beides Schei... aber Kinderstube war cool. Auf der einen Seite war es schon toll früher in den großen Geschäften einzukaufen, aber jetzt in Zeiten des Internets hat man einfach so viel Auswahl, vor allem von Sachen, die man früher nicht mal beim Händler vor Ort bestellen konnte. Auf alle Fälle sind es schöne Erinnerungen.

Solche Städte wachsen nun mal. Erlangen gehört eben zu den aufstrebenden Kommunen und das ist auch gut so…

Thank you for this video. I was born in Erlangen but have never seen the city (or Germany, or Europe). My parents were Australians spending a few years living and working in Europe during the 1970's. My father worked for Siemens and my mother worked at the hospital. Shortly after I was born they returned to Australia and I have never had the opportunity (nor could afford) to return to the city of my birth - I am working hard so that one day I can return 'home' to see where it all started for me.

+kra2351 The main changes are the commercial sites, e.g. Horten and Quelle. They were the two biggest stores in Erlangen where I used to look for CD's on sale :-)
Have you noticed, at that time the buses go straight to Hugenottenplatz? In the evening they even go through Marktplatz.
I just moved to Erlangen this week (September 2022). It's my first time in Germany. I am loving the city so far. Nice video to see how the city has changed over the years.

Es hat sich so gut wie nichts verändert. Die Orangerie hat einen neuen (gelben) Anstrich bekommen, die Universitätsbibliothek wurde aufgehübscht, Grande Galerie, Horten, Quelle und viele andere Geschäfte gibt es nicht mehr - aber ansonsten sieht alles fast genauso aus.
GustafGouda Danke fuer das Update. Das letzte mal war ich dort in 2008. Damals war Erlangen Arcaden mir neu und auch das renovierte Rathaus.
Neues Landratsamts und Siemens baut auch kräftig an ihrem Campus
Es hat sich sogar sehr viel geändert nicht nur Läden auch die Menschen... Die ZEIT damals war viel besser

Erlangen is such a wonderful little city. Met my wife there (actually Niederndorf) but this is where we went on dates all the time. It's a college town with wonderful restaurants, plenty of bike paths and fests all over the place if you dedicate yourself to finding one.
My first foreign visit is here more than 30 years ago. I worked in German Medical Company. 9 times visits during 11 years as employee.
I purchased many kinds of Frankonien wine here to Japan as gift.
This video is quite nostalgic for me!

Quelle was gone before I left. It has become a cinema complex where I've watched Titanic. Horten is now Kaufhof. The major change, after I left, was the large post office which is now a shopping mall. Grand Gallery has "died". It has always been half death :-)

I was in a army tank battalion there from 1987 to 1993. It was beautiful country. I recall the people in that area were generally unfriendly and for the most part disliked Americans probably. Loved the strawberry fest. Went to Nuremberg often. Lived just outside Erlangen in a little rural town. Ate at that little place outside gate 2 where you could get chicken and pommes with mayo. Guten morgen Nurenberg, hier ist Radio Gong...... LOL I miss those days.
I was a student from 1987 to 1994. And to forget, Radio Charivari... :-)
Moved to Erlangen a few months ago to study here. It's still as great as it looked like back in the days! :D

Our family was stationed there from 80-84, and have been back to visit 3 times! It's a beautiful city, and we really loved being stationed there!! The base is gone, but housing still remains!! ( we lived on Hartmannstrasse) Great video, thanks for sharing!!!

Just stumbled upon that video. Thank's for sharing. It was just one year before I moved to Erlangen, where I still live today and consider it as my home since I lived there much longer than the Town where I grew up. When I came here, it must have been looking exactly as you captured it, but I don't remember much of these days. Think I've not been often to downtown back then. The outside shots are almost unchanged to today, but the Grande Galerie does not exist anymore, so that view is gone forever.

I moved there 1987 for my Informatik Studium when Grand Galerie was a construction site. There used to be a toy shop where we could borrow board games and had a great weekend :D

Ja wir hatten damals auch noch die DM.die schönen Geschäfte damals.erlangen hatte so schöne Geschäfte , kleine und große.und vorallem die Kaufhäuser.da ist der Bus durch die Stadt gefahren.sehr schön.
Ich weis ehrlich gesagt nicht wie dieses Video entstanden ist das soll hier wohl erlangen im Juli 2013 gewesen sein aber es fahren am Marktplatz keine Busse keine Ahnung was in diesem Video für eine Umleitung war das aber alles entweder schöne Zwingerbusse oder scheiß Fahrmobile und jetzt kommen wir zu denn kaufhäuser wir haben in Erlangen kein Kaufhaus das horten oder Grande Galerie heißt auf dem cines tar Kino steht nicht das Quelle Logo und das Rathaus sieht auch kommisch aus das hat nähmlich ganz andere Fenster
habe es sehr genossen in den 90ern mit meiner Mutter in die Stadt zu gehn. Das war so ein besonderes Erlebnis. Leider kann ich mich nicht so gut an die Quelle erinnern war aber öfters aber in der Grande Galerie. Wisst ihr noch die 2 Löwen vor dem Kaufland Eingang des waren noch Zeiten.....

Kann mich noch sehr gut an die Dinge erinnern wenn ich sie sehe. Man vergisst so schnell wenn sich die Landschaft/Architektur ändert.

Was stationed at Ferris Barracks in Erlangen from 1976 to 1979. Erlangen became my home for those years and I have many pleasant memories of there.

i was there in 1990 to 93 in ferris barracks 19d headqaurters platoon during the gulf war! wish I can go back there and relive alot of memories! probibly all changed now! but I would do anything to go to a volksfest erlangen fest again like the old days! I'm retired veteran and I wonder how much is the euro dollor is now compared to the american? but when I was there it was the german marks! well maybe one day god will bring little indiana jones back to relive memories!

My wife and my very son josh later went to Germany to be with me in 1991 and aftet that my daughter kristina was born overthere in Nuremberg hospital! I used to go to the inlisted club on ferris barracks and get drunk all the time! I even had a best friend they called video joe but then i got busted for a fuckin DWI in 1993 and that ended my tour of fucked up douty!!
@Leon i also went to many places in erlangen germany and was moved all the place with my family like gremsdorf and we even had a military house in herzo base!! I think dammit?! It was where they had the bomb morters training and shit who knows what fuckin else!

Hi BigBoss97, great video, brings back fond memories of my time in Erlangen 1990 -1998. The big department stores like Horten and Quelle were great, as was the Grande Galerie. How long did you live there? Do you have more videos to share from that time?

Agree, the architecture hasn't changed too much, but the shops did. The biggest shops in town Horten, Kaufhof and Quelle have been replaced by eBay, Amazon etc. hahaha
Grande Gallery was built in ~1987 from ground up and it's totally gone now :-(

Das hier ist ein Fake Video denn in diesen Video heißen cines tar galaria Kaufhof Thalia und DK MAXX falsch bei 03:43 sieht man zum Beispiel wie ein hässliches Fahrmobile 2 schöne Zwingerbusse hinterher fährt und die Busse fahren Umleitung bei 03:12 und 03:39 bei 03:39 sind die Busse sogar so umgeleitet das die über die Fußgänger Zone fahren was war am 05 07 2013 los in Erlangen kann es sein das das Video eine Domeversion von der Stub ist die es eh nie geben wird es wird stattdessen wieder die Zwingerbusse wie bei 03:14 in Erlangen geben

To paraphrase, the past and the present do stand side-by-side in close proximity.
Almost everything is still the same today. Just some little things changed. At 3:20 the busses now drive in the opposit direction. At 3:47 this street today is completely forbidden for cars, busses and other vehicles (deliveries for the stores in the moring are allowed). You are not even allowed to drive on your bike there, because its called a "Fußgängerzone" which means it is a zone for walkers only. At 4:04 this building (Grand Galerie) has been demolished a few years ago and a new type of building for stores has been build. The following scenes where filmed within this building. Across the street today there is a big mall with lots of shops. At 5:35 the place looks the same today. But the many years ago "Quelle" changend to "Hertie" and then the building completely changed. Today there is Erlangens biggest cinema in this building. Many things, buildings and streets have changed over the years. But most of the places filmed in this video still look exactly the same. That tells me that Erlangen is holding on its roots. And I like that. I was born next to Erlangen, went to school in Erlangen from my 11th birthday on and live here since 2006. I like Erlangen, because it is green, open minded and with a lot of culture. Everybody should visit Erlangen. Not just because of the well known Bergkirchweih. Which by the way is not even included in this video, but I have to say I do not miss it in the video.

@@theresiadresel8218 im Video gibt es einen Datumsstempel vom Juni 1991. Das Video kann der Besitzer wann auch immer in ein digitales Format konvertiert und hochgeladen haben, das upload Datum ist dabei völlig irrelevant.

Grande Galerie... a little tiny shopping mall which was brand new and somehow metropolitan a that time, demolished only 20 years later. But the Erlangers never took care of their historic structure. No bomb was ever thrown in the 2nd world war, all the "war damages" were made after when the city gained on to have a modern look. This is still continuing, unfortunately. They always find good reasons to destroy further historic buildings. Currently the "Hupfla" building (mental home). Most shops of my childhood have gone: Niklas supermakets, toy stores Kinderstube, Pfannkuch, department stores Kaufhof, HeKa, Quelle, fotoshop Porst, book stores Merkel, Palm & Enke, cinemas Schauburg, Glockenlichtspiele and many, many more... Instead there are only faceless chain-stores which you find in every city.

The Germans in Erlangen are some of the nicest people I ever met.
Damals war ich 5 Jahre an viele Dinge kann ich mich erinnern aber nur nicht, dass Busse durch die Hauptstraße gefahren sind.
Ich habe jetzt im Internet gesehen 2009 führen die Busse wegen Umleitung auf der Fußgänger Zone damals gab es doch solche Busse wie bei 03:13 noch nicht

Ich habe ma das richtig angeschaut in diesen video wurden doch viele falsche bilder gemacht es gibt in Erlangen keinen laden der grande Galerie heißt und auf dem cones tar Kino steht auch nicht Quelle drauf und was ist horten ?
Du bist offensichtlich zu jung 😊. Ich wohne seit 1992 in Erlangen und kann bezeugen, dass alles echt ist. Es gab am Hugenottenplatz wirklich Kaufhof und auch noch das Geschäft Heka, was kaum einer kennt. Der aktuelle Galleria Kaufhof war damals der Horten. Grand Galerie war eine Art Einkaufspassage. Dort oben gab es ein chinesisches Restaurant, wo ich gegessen habe. Den Besitzer von diesem Restaurant kenne ich. Er hatte eine deutsche Ehefrau und aktuell betreibt er das thailändische Restaurant "Samui Asia Lounge" nähe Bahnhof.
Ich habe gerade einen Artikel mit einem alten Foto im Internet gefunden, auf dem man Kaufhof am Hugenottenplatz zu sehen ist.

Ich bin im Jahr 2000 geboren das ist interessant zu sehen wie die Stadt 9 Jahre vor meiner Geburt aussah. Wenn ich jetzt überleg was wo steht und früher mal gestanden hat...
Damals fuhren alle Busse tagsueber (von Nuernberger Str.) bis Hugenottenplatz @3:39. Nach 20 Uhr fuhren sie sogar durch die Stadt.
