Born amongst seven boys to Jamaican parents, and raised in London, England, she was introduced to music from the young age of 5 as her father taught her to play the piano. Her talent for singing was then recognised and respected on a broader scale when she was chosen as lead vocalist for the church choir.
She came of age during the original outbreak of the UK’s reggae movement during the early eighties. After spells of sneaking out at nights squeezing into the back of sound system vans, just so that she could sing on their sets in the local dances, her hunger for the music industry seemed to reel out of control.
In 1979 she entered a school talent with a friend, naming themselves ‘Love and Unity”, and performing a Cross self-written composition entitled ‘I Adore You’. They won the contest and accepted the prize of recording the song with a local record company from South London called Studio 16.
I Adore You was her first No.1 produced from the Studio 16 stables as it went straight to the No.1 spot in the UK reggae charts.
Top ten hits such as ‘Put It On’, ‘I Just Don’t Care’ and ‘I Can’t Let You Go’ followed on the Studio 16 record label.
Over the following years, 4 more No.1 hits followed when she teamed up with the Ariwa records in 1985, who produced her biggest hit to date ‘Country Living’. Country Living spent a whopping 10 weeks at the No.1 spot in the UK and European reggae charts and was followed by twelve top 10 albums.
Cross went on to accumulate popularity and fame in the reggae industry and became one of the most admired female reggae singers in the business. She earned the title of the BBC listener’s “Britain’s Best Female Reggae Singer” for six consecutive years between 1986 -1991.
Her first exclusive Japanese release, the album entitled ‘Just a Dream’, was produced and released by Pioneer Records executive Koichi Hanafusa in 1997. This was followed by her second Japanese release entitled ‘Dreams Come True’ released in 1999.
On March 27th 2010 another two awards were added to Sandra’s collection. She was voted ‘Most Popular Voted Female Reggae Artist’ along with ‘Best Female Music Performance’ at the Hidden Creative Economy Awards held in London.
