Finally somebody reacting to this masterpiece. I remember hearing it for the first time on headphones on my bed in the twilight when it came out that I had to listen to over and over that evening. I was a young teen, haven’t even got into pot or drinking, I just got off on the music.

I 'm almost 66 years old, and I can remember when and where I was when I first heard this great song. 1966 or 67 If memory serves me. It was the beginning of the LSD, mushroom, mescaline, Hallucinogenic, psychedelic drug era. I was a punlk kid of 10 years old, but I had 7 other older Brothers and sisters who had the radio on day and night in the 60s. I learned from them real good! The 60s and 70s were the greatest times for all music, not just Rock. I don't know why, but there was such good music, and so much of it, in every genre from Rock, to country western to you name it. There has never been anything like it since.
    Thanks Harri

The Chambers Brothers are an American psychedelic soul band best known for their eleven-minute 1967 hit "Time Has Come Today". It has been used in a lot of movie soundtracks. They are basically considered a "one hit wonder" but what a great song. That was the first time I had heard the word "psychedelicized" in a song.

These guys were fantastic. Their live performances killed. They were far from one hit wonders and had quite a few charted songs. They regularly toured with Alice Cooper and also featured some great musicians backing them including the great Steve Hunter. However they had some rough and dishonest managers and worked with lousy promoters. they should have been big time and today a legendary heritage act but unfortunately they separated in the early '70's. I love their version of "People get Ready' in my opinion second only to the original Impressions recording.

Yes, an anthem all the way! Ask any Vietnam era soldier if he heard it there and I doubt you'll get a no. These guys started out in Mississippi as a gospel group and relocated to LA where they picked up 21 yr. old Brian Keenan who was a rock drummer from Ireland and the only white guy in the group. Clive Davis heard a demo of this and FORBID them to record it because "black guys don't do this kind of shit". What did they do? They were close with the studio people who found a vacant hour for them, so they went in and did this in ONE TAKE! including the mixing, adding some reverb etc. The track has been used in many movies as well. I'll never get tired of this as it is not only superb but captures the turmoil of the era so well.

I've been dying for someone to react to this song ever since I discovered UA-cam reactions! Thanks for doing this one!! Such memories..... Since others are sharing their memories about this song, I'll join in. I was in 3rd grade, and my mom would host parties in our apartment on Saturday nights. The young adults who lived in the apartment complex would come. I'm sure some of them were high, but they arrived that way. However, I do remember lots of beer being consumed. My friend and I were quite entertained by watching the crazy dancing of the partiers, especially during the psychedelic songs like this one. There may have been a strobe light there on several occasions, or maybe a black light, to enhance the psychedelic mood. What a strange time it was. BTW, other party songs I remember from that time of my life were: Satisfaction, Get Off of My Cloud, and Paint It Black (all by The Rolling Stones), Sky Pilot by The Animals, and Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group.

"Time Has Come Today" was a big hit for The Chambers Brothers in 1968. They released their album The Time Has Come about six months after Hendrix dropped Are You Experienced. The Chambers Brothers went underrated sadly. They were buddies with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison and often toured together. When you're ready for more from them, check out "Bang Bang", "Uptown To Harlem", "Funky", "People Get Ready", and their cover of "The Weight". along with many others.

Great reaction to this psychedelic classic! The way I heard the story is that the record company did not want the group to do a long song and would not schedule any studio time for them to do it, but a sound engineer was sympathetic and had them show up early one morning where they had time to do one take, including all of the effects! They did it and this is the result!

OK I can't keep quiet any longer! This song certainly was a cool mega-hit that propelled them into the spotlight. But the style (Pyschedelic Rock etc.) was not typical of their other music on this album. It is definitely worth a listen, and most people have not mentioned any of their other songs, which are generally a fusion of funk/gospel/soul with a bit of rock. I especially like the funky "Uptown", and "All Strung Out Over You", "I Can't Stand It", "Please Don;t Leave Me", and "People Get Ready" (a soulful gospel take that was also a hit, I believe). Check them out! (Please hear the album versions first, rather than Live) Thanks!

The funny part of it is that while most of the bands in this genre were young, the 4 brothers ranged from their late 20's to mid 30's. They'd started out as a gospel group and over the previous 15 years had morphed into folk and later soul/acid/funk. It was always a gas to watch people who were tripping listen to this.

Back in the mid to late 80's I used to go to the Planetarium in NYC, and we would all get high beforehand, and they had two different laser shows every couple of weeks. It was a hemisphere of showing our galaxy, in relation to our planet spinning slowly around above you as you reclined in a reclining lounge chair, and then, depending upon the show, it was either laser 60's, or laser Floyd. Laser 60's was mostly psychedelic music, and the "Time has come today" by the Chambers Brothers long play version of the song was the best part of the show, and all of the early parts of the song were represented with laser graphics, and when the trippy part with the drums played, the laser show had a huge, laser projected, analog clock ticking and tocking above you to the music, totally in synch to the music. Probably an hour or so of great music. Laser Pink Floyd was great too. As good as a concert, almost. Love your reviews, Harri, keep it up !!

The short version of this was played on AM radio out of Chicago while we "cat the drag" in the Summer of 1967 in LaPorte, Indiana. The long version you played was a favorite on the new FM rock radio shows, that played LP album cuts ,instead of 45rpm singles hits. We used to listen to a station called "Triad "on FM radio with a program called "Songs From Across The Big Swamp' (The "swamp" was Lake Michigan. Heh.) They played this cut with other groups album cuts in the early 1970s. Great party music back then.

I saw them in person 2 weeks before Woodstock at the Atlantic City Festival and they were fantastic--and I mean every song. Very soulful. They do a great cover of Wilson Pickett's THE MIDNIGHT HOUR.

I have listened to a lot of music since 1963. I would put this song in midway in my favorite songs in my personal top 10 list.

As a small child in the 1960s this song scared the hell out of me. Like a horror movie and yet I loved it. Still do.

For a "one hit wonder" they've got some incredible deep tracks. Their version of "Midnight Hour" is wonderful, I think I prefer it to the original.

Needs more "Cowbell" don't ya think? lol Dug this song way back in the day. Got airplay on the new (at the time) Hippie-Alternative-Stereo-FM Radio stations that were forming around the same time. State safe...be well...

First time to hear this was 1971 on KNUS Dallas. Headphones, middle of the night, blacklight, Gonesh incense, peaking on a hit of Orange Sunshine. Crazy days indeed!

Great song! If you like psychedelia, check out “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” by the 13th Floor Elevators.

This is one one the greatest songs from the 60s, and I especially like the drumming part in the long "break". Another great cut on the album is their cover of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour".
